Nice work with what you have on hand and designing it to work.
Thanks!

Thanks for watching!
Looking good. I like the rudder modification.
Thanks!
I’m surprised to see you doing this much already.
I can’t work very long at the time yet, but getting there Thanks for watching!
Nice to see you at it again!
Thanks!
Glad to see you getting active again. If you are down Lil' Washington way let me know.
Thanks I will
What are your thoughts with replacing those tiny, permanently closed, portholes with larger ones? I know there isn't a lot of room for anything much bigger, and that making a bigger hole in your boat is probably risky. But it would be nice to be able to open them for a bit of airflow and to screen out the bugs.
Not a bad idea if you can find them small enough Not hardly room for any bigger Thanks for watching
@theboatnik1328 That's true. Thank you for getting back to me!
What kind of information about the boat can you find with the hull ID?
The hull number (original sail number) The year built, sometimes the month built The model
@theboatnik1328 Thanks!
From what I hear, knee surgeries are the worst! Here's hoping you're back on you feet soon. I love the sail bag. You could totally sell those!
Thanks!
This is a very helpful video. Thanks. I seem to recall that with my CP-16, I had trouble sleeping on my side, but in every other respect, the boat was very nice. I'm contemplating buying another one someday as part of my downsizing trend, but that hip clearance issue is still a concern. Anyway, thanks for the great video!
Thanks for watching!
New subscriber here. I found you after searching for information on Com-Pac 16's. My father, who lives on Lake Norman, has one that has been neglected for years, and I'd like to get it cleaned up to use this summer to learn some about sailing. Until I saw your video, I thought maybe I could repair the fiberglass, if necessary. You did such an impressive job on this, and you clearly have tons of knowledge and experience. Depending on whatever repairs his boat needs, I may still try my hand at it (I still need to go prod at it a bit), but it's definitely more complicated than I expected! Also, I noticed in at least one of your videos, you said you were sailing near New Bern. I graduated from high school not far from there, and live about an hour south of Raleigh now. Thank you for putting this out there, and for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for subscribing I live in Sanford, NC about an hour kinda south of Raleigh I sail a lot at Jordan lake and on the lower Neuse river
@@theboatnik1328 Oh, cool, you're not too far from me. I live in Harnett County. Jordan Lake seems like it would be fun to sail. I"m hoping to get to a few places this year.
Looks really nice ! Thank you. From Canada
Thanks for watching
Wishing you the best in recovery. That is some awesome sewing. Those bags look great.
Thank you I enjoy watching your videos
Wish you a speedy recovery. Do your PT exercises daily, and it will be good!
Thank you
it's annoying how easily you can sew. i'm trying... but it's HARD!
Lol My machine is controlled with my right knee which is the one I had surgery on I still don’t have much feeling in the right side of my knee so it is hard to control the sewing machine So I had some pretty bad stitching But getting better You just need a bit of practice
I’m sure you have discovered that ICE is your best friend and will be until the swelling is gone. Best wishes!
Thanks Yes I have a couple of the flexible ice bags and use them a lot
I just bought a 1980 Com Pac16 today
That’s great I know you will enjoy it
Excellent video
Thank you!
Accurate display of the 16’s interior and how to utilize it. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Is this a 150 model or larger? If not a 150, have you owned a 150 challenger model and what did you think?
This is a 16’ model with a 70 HP outboard I really like it and the 70 hp is plenty I used to own a 150 challenger model with a 50 HP It was a great boat with dual side consoles I used it for years in coastal waters and fresh water lakes I even took it out through the inlet and trolled outside when the weather was right The 16 is a good bit roomier and a more refined hull shape Both boats are very dry ride Thanks for watching
@theboatnik1328 ok, I was wondering about roominess and the 150 maybe being too small. Mostly just two people who would ride but don't want to feel cramped either. Do you know anything on the suzuki motors and if they were - are good motors. I am towards Garner area..
I am not a huge fan of Suzuki outboards Based on my limited experience and with trying to get parts I’m sure others have had better luck I really like the Henry O boats though And McKee The 150 is adequate for 2 fishing but will get crowded with 3 I loved mine though
Good for you, taking care of that old knee injury! Prayers for a successful surgery and excellent recovery! Be kind to your nurse! 😅
Thanks You know Tommie will take good care of me
Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery😀
Thank you!
Good luck with the surgery and speedy recovery.
Thank you!
Again a very nice job! I agree that this is probably better than new!
Thanks!
Great work and knowledge! You really understand how this stuff works. I appreciated how you explained that multiple pours will bond together. I have a similar repair to make on a Precision 21 mast step. The seller said he had the step professionally repaired, but the top layer of fiberglass has cracked, leading me to think the underlying repair was inadequate.
Mine had supposedly been repaired too It was a disaster and glad I cut it open Good luck with yours
I have a 83 M17 also. Are you replacing the port lights? Would you happen to know the thickness of the plexiglass in them?
Mine are not leaking so I won’t be replacing them Not sure of thickness, but at least 1/4” I would guess
Use useful information. Very useful information for the boat and camping.
Wish I could see a little more wind.
What is your favorite boat?
More wind would have been nice, but it was a great trip
My favorite boat is probably a Com-Pac 23 The shallow draft helps make that decision because everywhere in coastal NC is shallow water
Is there anything that you can’t fix?
Lol Not much I haven’t fixed at one time or another
Great job. Overhead work is the worst!
It sure is I still have to remove a half dozen layers of bottom paint Thanks for watching
Nice job on the repair! Strange that someone would put a forward looking sonar on a boat that small -- it's not like you have a deep keel to worry about. The last owner must have lived near some very shallow waters to be that worried.
The previous owner had some strange ideas Most of the work on this boat has been reversing them Thanks for watching
Question about having a transducer shoot directly through a fiberglass hull without a thru-hull. What are the pro's and con's of shooting thru the hull and what would be the limit on the hull thickness it would shoot through? Thanks
Glueing a transducer inside the hull can work very good The hull has to be solid fiberglass with no core Also no trapped air bubbles which you can’t see, but this is not usually a problem The obvious pro is no hole in the boat The con is sometimes needing to try a few spots to find one that works good I usually use a temporary bond until I know it will work good Thanks for watching
As usual excellent job! I have my old fishfinder on my compac. Mounted transducer with the bracket on stern exterior below waterline but is protected by stern. Quite happy with it and cheap.
Thanks!
I hope you sell the Com-Pac 16. Are you going to sell your Com-Pac 23 at some point? Thanks for your great channel. Really enjoy see your work!
The 16 sold in 2 days I will eventually sell the 23, but not right away I am still doing a bit of work on it and I hope to launch it in the spring and sail it next season Thanks for watching!
I’m looking forward to seeing your results when you test the transducer. I’d like to install one on my Sun Cat if I can avoid a thru-hull.
As long as the fiberglass is solid and not cored, it will usually work good
I stumbled on your channel after I bought a Com-pac 16 Mk 2 and was looking up videos/info on the boat. Come to find out that you restored and worked on my boat! The guy I bought the boat from confirmed that he originally purchased it from you a couple of years ago. I hope to see you out on Jordan Lake sometime, keep up the good work!
Cool! Thanks for watching
Just saw this get listed, and I really wish I had held off on buying my daysailer! Was really hoping for a Com-Pac but never saw any pop up near me until this one.
An O’day daysailer is a good boat Enjoy it Thanks for watching!
Your transducer should work fine there. That's where I installed mine on my 1976 M17. If you hadn't already used the semi-perm putty on it I would have suggested Silly Putty, of all things. Actually works great for a temp install. Just have to be sure to get all the bubbles out of it.
Thanks!
Very nice, the only thing is there is no room for a porta potty. My wife would definitely want one, if out for a day, or a couple of days.
There actually is room for one but just It goes under the companionway hatch You slide it forward to use but it is tight I normally set it out in the cockpit at night
Lots of good tips here, always something new to learn.
Thanks for watching
What is the oil that you are using to lubricate the shaft connecting to the sprocket?
I think you are referring to the lanolin that I coat a lot of the parts with Lanolin is a natural grease like substance that comes from sheep’s wool It is waterproof and lasts a long time and helps prevent corrosion between metals Also lubricates And not expensive Lanocote is a brand name but any 100% lanolin is the same Edson makes a spray lubricant for the chain, gear, etc but 30 weight oil is fine and much cheaper and is recommended by Edson if not using their spray lubricant The lanolin is not used to lubricate these parts, just as a corrosion protection between assembled parts that don’t need regular lubrication
Randy, man, thank you for this video!! That was a great walk through of the CP16, I am guessing if you're a side sleeper the hips might be an issue. :o) But that visual of you in the breath was very helpful. If I end up wanting a CP16, I am coming to you first... hoping you have one to sell then, of course. I have to finsihing my Kitchen first. :o) Thanks frined, your the best!.
Glad it helped Thanks for watching!
Just in case you are interested I will be listing this latest 1985 CP16 for sale in a few days This is the one I recently took camp sailing $4k It will be a good while before I have another one for sale I do have a 1981 model but it will need an extensive interior rebuild and it will be several months before I get to it
Thank you for this episode. I've been really trying to narrow down my purchase for next season, and have been leaning towards the Com-Pac line. I'm about a inch shorter than you, but about 100 lbs. heavier, so seeing the actual size of the quarter berths really helped to rule out the 16 for me. I really think that the 23 is the size that I'm likely to settle down with, although the 19 might be a good compromise -- time will tell. As always, please keep up on the great work -- I love the fact that I never know what you'll be working on next -- I'm always hoping that you will come across something different (Skipper 20, Balboa 16 or 20, Precision 18, Rob Roy 23, Tanzer 22, WWP 15 or 19, Seaward 22, or even a Midship 25). Keep up the great work!!!
The 23 is by far my favorite Com-Pac It sails better than the 19 Thanks for the suggestions
Where did you get the Blue triangle Com Pac Flag? Where do you fly this flag?
I have had this burgee flag for well over 30 years It was our Com-Pac club burgee back then I fly it on the starboard shroud when anchored sometimes Thanks for watching
Interesting to see how fellow compac owner manages sleep outs. Regards!
Thanks for watching!
LOL “Like sleeping in a coffin…” 😂. Great line! I also liked your apt comparison of the cabin being like a pup tent. This was the main factor in our decision to go with the Sun Cat instead of the 16. My wife fell in love with the larger cabin and it makes sense because we will be camping in if for longer stays. As you said, the 16 would work quite well for one person. I have a question about your companionway bug screen. I may have missed it in one of your other videos but have you described how the screen attaches to the boat? Thanks for the informative tour of your 16. Tim
@timneely946 the screen has a weighted edge sewn in and it just lays over the top and drapes down Kind of a coated lead rope sewn around perimeter I think you can buy these pre made Mine will also work on my CP 23
Good evening my friend. Hope that you are doing well today. I am still having trouble with mt balance. I really can’t do much outside. It has been about 1.5 years since my surgery, so I am not doing well. By actual count I have fallen 75 times since I left the hospital. Most have been in the house, but I have had a couple of ambulance falls. We have not been to the coast but twice this year. No kayaking this year or last year. I have been out of my element which has left me pretty sad. I am glad that you showed us how to sleep on the Compac 16. It looks as if it would be difficult to sleep on your side. I toss and turn a lot at night. I am concerned that I would just about fit. I does look exciting for a couple nights on the lake. At Lake Norman there is so much development that all the coves are filled with houses. At one time, you could find a quiet cove, toss out an anchor and sleep until about 9:00 AM. Anyways thank you for showing me the accommodations. I really like the boat. Even when I had a big boat I wanted a little boat. For guys like us, smaller is the way to go to lakes in North Carolina. Tommy
Nice hearing from you again Tommy And continued prayers for you my friend The 16 is small, but I can lay on my side ok Thanks for watching!
Just a quick question. Why did you decide to use epoxy rather than polyester? Durability? I certainly find epoxy more durable. Also, the barrier coat you put on before the gelcoat, is that specifically designed so that a good bond can be achieved between the epoxy and the polyester gelcoat?
Mainly just because I had the epoxy on hand Polyester would have been fine I just find myself using epoxy for most repairs these days The barrier coat definitely helps as a tie coat for gelcoat There is a product made specifically for this but I have never used it and don’t recall the name I thing Fiberglass Warehouse sells it Supposed to work very well between epoxy and gelcoat
Good stuff thank you
Thanks for watching!
Nice work. I hope that it sails as good as it looks.
Thanks! It did very well in light air but haven’t used it in heavier wind yet
Verry informative!
Thanks!
Nice sail. To bad you did not have more wind. Love to see folks boat camping on small boats, it shows that they can do what the big boys do.
A bit more wind would have been nice, but it was fun nonetheless Thanks for watching!
