JB Weld Original Cold-Weld 8265-SUK Steel Reinforced Epoxy (5020 psi) I did some science to destructively test a join made using JB weld to see just how strong structurally adhesives are vs their claims. Interesting results.

The goal of this video was to understand the rigidity of the Esprit chassis before I start to make modifications to it - these will be documented in later episodes. Simulations studies can take a while and I had to balance this video between accuracy, time spent and audience boredom. Some people like technical info - some people like workshop action and I cant please everyone so forgive me if t...

You don't use glue as a substitute for a weld. Period. In emergencies, or as intended, or for certain interem repairs. Sure, some people do not have access to a welder. But it's just not a dependabe, long term fix.. Plainly, it is unsafe. People that push this rhetoric are being irresponsible.
I bought this stuff from Amazon in the UK. The fumes were absolutely toxic. That's probably why it is not in UK shops. Also it was about as good as our Araldite adhesive which is strong but no where near as strong as welding.
SOLD !!! I’ve always had JB Weld, in my arsenal, but I’ll be using a lot more of it, now, I think 👍👍👍 I’m also jealous that I don’t have a testimonial, or JB Weld story to tell. But let me give it a try, anyway🤷♂️… One time, i was stranded on a desert Island, and a cargo container of JB Weld washed up on shore….so i fashioned a boat….no…i fabricated a boat and an outboard motor, out of JB Weld, and sailed it back to safety on Coconut oil 🥥 😳 I also built a shark cage and speargun out of JB Weld, and hunted Megladon, off the coast of Madagascar 🤷♂️ i never got so much as a fin burn. I would 100% recommend this product. 👍 thank you…that felt good 😂
I’d like to see you do a comparison between the most popular Loctite products, and their Eskonke counterparts. I’ve tried the 603, and its seems comparable or better, but you really have a proper setup to test them
In my experience, this epoxy will weaken a LOT over time, eventually basically crumbling away
I wonder how it would hold up to tensile rather than shear forces.
Good video. Ive used it for many applications including repairing leaking radiators and fuel tanks. It always worked and it lasted.
JB Weld withstood 4 tons of lateral force…. Pretty amazing, just saved you12 minutes
Skip to 4:15 to start the test, the first 4:15 is useless blathering
lol nice
I've used JB weld for years. The oddest use was to seal a crack in a bass float bowl in a carburetor. I didn't think it would work. But I drained the float, cleaned the area and beveled the crack with a Dremel tool it was too thin to braze conventionally and I could not locate a replacement float. Figured I had nothing to lose. The key was to allow it to cure totally. It ended up fixing the float. The engine went on to run the rest of its life and carb worked perfectly.
JB is good BUT Marine Tex is TWICE the PSI and in white or grey!
This is exactly what I wanted to do. SUPER helpful. Thanks!
Added tip- jb Weld can be manipulated with a magnet. If you are trying to use it in a hard-to-reach area or want to draw it into same, use a magnet. I love this video and It proved what I have been saying about JB for years- It's awesome.
There we have it. I had a random question in my head about the esprit chassis, and the first thing I stumbled on is the most complete breakdown imaginable of that very thing. Cheers!
GREAT JOB MATE - THANKS
Great job & explanation,
Looking at your pressure gauge it says 'metric tons.' Isn't a metric ton, a tonne?
JBW is too rigid to be used oh things that flex, like where bondo should be...body work, ie fiberglass. i have used jbw as a thread locker on a homemade helicoil 😂 and to restructure threads for oil pressure sensors on aluminum engine blocks 😂😂
And to hold a quarter to the top of a piston to raise compression 😂
very helpful video!! Thank you!!!
The stuff works so well for certain things though. If you aren't going to have wild or extreme temperature swings and you aren't going to be putting it under weird stress or abuse it will hold up basically forever.
everything I ever used it on weekend in time
you should look into the 3M seal bonder used by automotive OEM
Epoxies are scam.
Is there on the market a stronger adhesive better and stronger then J.B. Weld ?
It is not welding! No idea why they get away with the name 🤷♂️
Thanks for sharing, I too was doubtful with strength. I will be using to attach a car amp using jb weld, thanks to this video.
to do a proper test, you would have to have many replicates, and you would also need to test not just sheer stress, but compressive stress, expansion stress, and torsion stress as well. I'm sure being educated in engineering, you know this. but your audience likely does not.
I've always loved JB Weld. I have used it to repair kitchen utensils for years with zero issues. no glue remains as durable under as many different stresses as this one does.
I admire what you've done by creating the cad model and then running simulations on it. It's the sort of content which is extremely valuable and extremely rare at the same time. I wish you all the best and hope you continue on RUclips, it takes perseverance to get traction here but it's worth it.
I love this project!
01:21 Me too! Cheers!
Is this good to attach handgun sights to gun as well
I would be interested to see how JB Weld 'Extreme Heat' stands up to stress loads at engine temperatures. The application I intend to use it is to repair a stripped thread in a vintage flake graphite cast iron cylinderblock used to retain a cylinderhead bolt.
It helps to abrade the bonding area too. It does increase the bond of the glue to the material.
JB weld is epoxy with steel powder in it. In the Grumman line of light aircraft from the 70s and 80s, Tiger, Cheeta, etc., nearly all of the structure used aluminum bonding methods to attach skins to substructure like ribs and frames. Looking at them, you'd think they were fiberglass. This only became a problem when the bond's greatest weakness, low resistance to peel, resulted in wings experiencing peel-back bond failures at corners, fortunately discovered before there were any airframe losses. The permanent fix was quite simple: stop the peel from getting started mechanically, and I believe an Airworthiness Directive was issued that required installation of a single rivet at skin corners on the wings (at the rear spar - the skins are a single wrap). Problem solved. So, when designing a bonded assembly with a flexible stressed skin or panel of some sort, it's a good idea to use a mechanical fastener to hold the corners down so a peel failure can't get started.
Holy cow!!!!!!!!! This video is insane how is this not a commercial🫢🫢
Good video, I have been using JB weld a lot on my custom / race bike, nothing structral but I have a few steel to aluminuim items that had to be joined (eliminating the use and weight of 2 bolts) and some other work that I thought would be better if it was bonded. been fine for 6 years now
Ocean gate
did you rough up the surface first?
Stuff work pretty good until it gets hot. Then it becomes kind of flexible at high temp.
Much depends on the batch the stuff came from when it was made.
Would be interesting to see a test for tension as opposed to shear.
Repeat the test but prep the metal to receive the epoxy by scuffing it up with coarse sandpaper and then cleaned fully with isopropyl alcohol.
JB weld is an amazing product. I've fixed so many things. Still doesn't replace welding, but if your welds are very ugly JB weld will cover them nicely!
This is not a very practical test (looking at shear strength). It would be much more useful to measure the tensile strength.
OceanGate should had used JB-Weld on their carbon fiber hull. I bet they would still be alive today.
I almost want to see what the difference between this and those parts super glued together would be. Also may be welded together.
Excellent test. Higher speed camera might be quite useful.
Thank you sir, this video is extremely helpful. I have. A question for you. Lets say i want to make a fingerboard rail for fingerboard skateboard. Would this be enough to make a long lasting rail that needs to be glued welded together?
My biggest issue with the product is the stupidity in calling it "weld". Welding involves heating the base material into a molten state and joined with or without similar, molten filler material. This product is JB Glue. It's good glue, but it's not "cold welding".
