Asking ChatGPT to make me a better cyclist
Thanks for the footage and commentary. Always enjoy watching local races, and it's good to see some old friends out on the course too.
My pleasure! Yeah it was fun and I mean that is the bedrock of why we do what we do
I was thinking of going and doing a post Labor Day road race, here in the Midwest crits and road races are pretty much done Labor Day weekend.... But at this point I'm in total CX mode and the road race is a 3.5 hour drive 🙄.... Yeah I'm going to do the local cyclocross races 😎.
Yeah I don't blame you, for me in the late season all my motivation, which includes driving far for races starts to drop. I'm going to try to do a couple CX races as well. We don't have nearly as much as you guys but we have a couple fun little series.
@@ChainlessTV yeah we got pretty lucky this year, in the Detroit area there are like six races that are within about an hour of home. If I want to drive 2 hours, there's even another three or so in the Grand Rapids area.
The lightest I could get my size 52cm Madone SLR Disc (albeit with 60mm wheels Bora WTO Ultra wheels) was 7.99 kg (17.6 lbs) That's with SRAM Red AXS and Look Keo Blade Carbon Ti pedals. Some bikes are just big-boned I guess, lol
Yep its just the sacrifice for aero. I guess you could save ~2-300g with a lighter wheel but 8kg for a chunky aero bike is solid
I have the Scott foil RC30. Got it back in January 2023. Maybe 1.5K miles on the road and only like 8 crits. Only 1 ride a week outside, other rides are on a trainer with an old bike. I can comfortably stay in an aero position for a long time on my foil... like 30 minutes. I could only hold an aero position for like 3 minutes on my Tarmac SL6 or 2023 BMC roadmachine. I think the Foil's higher stack helps with comfortably holding an aero position ( just my theory). I think being able to comfortably hold an aero position for an extended period of time is the best attribute of this bike and is the biggest watts saving (way bigger impact than the watts saved from the frame). Also my aero position on the Foil gives a crappy draft to my opponent behind me ... which is doubly beneficial. This bike feels more vertically stiff than my other bikes (It does a bad job of smoothing out the rough pavement... maybe I should try a 30mm rear tire. I also have carbon spoke wheels, so maybe that contributes to the harsher ride. My bike rear thru axle has no play like yours, but my bike has fewer miles (hopefully not foreshadowing...). I like the stock saddle. 3 part seat post is a dumb design. I'm afraid a one piece might make the bike an even rougher ride. My Tarmac SL6 is a much better handling bike in my opinion, more confidence inspiring in the corners than the Foil. Tarmac has quicker turn in and is more comfortable on the bumps. Tarmac handling (rapid turn in and ability to quickly change lines mid corner) is tangibly better than my Foil. Foil is more stable and planted for going in a straight line. I switched my Foil from 28mm GP5000 TT tires to 29mm Enve SES RaceDay (grippy and more compliant tires) and did some dedicated handling drills and that helped my Foil's handling. Tarmac SL6 is just so confidence inspiring for corners that I want to push my limits and I felt safe doing so (I was pedal stricking around turns within the first 2 minutes of test riding my buddies tarmac SL6, and even with a pedal strike the bike was like ... ok, no big deal... which is why I bought a used Tarmac SL6 2 years ago). I didn't get that feeling of cornering confidence from my Foil, I had to work my back to where I was comfortable attacking corners for crits. $4200 was a steal. Well done! Was $4200 after you subtracted out the $900 chase new credit card?). I thought I did well getting my RC30 for $3700. Thanks for the video.
Thanks! Yeah I agree with your sentiment, I dont find it punishingly rough but it definitely is not as compliant as my BMC Teammachine and also the Giant TCR I was riding before. The 30c tires do help a lot though. That is interesting with the cornering confidence. I locked in pretty quick with my foil but I was coming from a bike using 25c tires. I actually just looked, it was 4300 before subtracting the chase points. Sports Basement gave me a little extra off because 1. The bike got delayed in transit from SoCal. 2. There was a small scratch on the crank. I haggled a little bit 🤐 The price was definitely pretty insane, I think I could sell the bike for pretty close to what I paid now after riding it for a season.
Thats why I rock Michelin Power Cup 28 clinchers. Super fast, more supple then conti, better feeling on the road and waaaay lighter with tpu tubes. We are talking here at over 100g savings for a set of wheels. And yeah they are fast in tanwall. And tanwalls looks way better :)
Yeah but on bigger bike you wouldn't have to run a ton of spacers. And that's not only better for the looks but also front stiffness
Yes and no, the bigger bike is 2cm taller in the front, so a few less spacers. Its also longer though so that might mean needing to prop things up a little. But why you gotta make call me out on the spacers looking crappy 🤐😂
@@ChainlessTV I was looking at geo chart and the reach is exactly the same for S and M. The top tube is just 1cm longer. I don't understand how this bike would be too long? I'm not critizing or hating just curious why u think so. Also I am not saying saying spacers look crappy, the bike still looks great! Just a touch better with less spacers and I think with less spacers the front handling is a touch better. I ride Scott addict rc in size 58 (I am 187cm) and went to 1 spacer over time, also not pushing all the way down to slammed just for looks. Comfort is king still and higher stack allows my shoulders to be more relaxed and it's easy for me to get into aero position on the hoods.
I’ve also got a Scott Foil and I absolutely love it. I’m a big guy (6’6 and 230lbs), so I’m super conscious of creaking. I just put A LOT of carbon paste on the seat post and I haven’t heard a thing since. Hope it helps!
I'll give it a try! I just ordered another tube
Great review. I’m always fascinated when a fellow 5’11/6’er is on a smaller bike.
Yeah I always kind of thought of it as a thing only the pros do but it does feel good. Im sure it changes brand to brand but for Scott I would definitely size down
@@ChainlessTV That’s good to know about Scott. I’ve been on Madone for a while, and I’m normally on a 58 because of my seat height. I want to try a 56, but I’m already maxed out on the size above it, so it would be futile
Noises drive me crazy. If there's any noise I can't figure out, it's going straight to the shop.
Me too, I'm totally a noise freak. My BMC was always silent, I'm not sure how much of that is good design but there definitely was a difference. My old Giant creaked a fair amount too
Love these longform videos, and yupp shoutout GC Performance!
I forgot to do the free hub sound test 😭
Thank you so much for such a detailed review.
Anytime! I cut out a lot of rambling, I could talk about bikes and bike reviews on RUclips for a long time 😅
Great vid. I enjoy hearing amateur racer's POV on their bikes and racing.
Great video for someone returning from the dead :D
I'm curious how you arrived at that saddle fore/aft setting?
Mostly just feel for me and testing over time. I enjoy being more over the bottom bracket and forward. This does have the trade off of having more weight on your hands. I think it's rooted in me starting out as a mountain biker and and (most) mountain bike geo tries to get your butt over the BB for better traction.
@@ChainlessTV cool, thank you!
Hylix has a one piece seatpost for the Foil. 150g/<$200 You got a great deal!
Wow cool, thanks for the tip! I like the clamp they use a lot better. Ill probably order it, I'll keep you posted
any recommendations for a narrower bar with flare? we have a 1 inch steer tube
@@travispyle2905 Unfortunately, I think you're SOL on that one.
@@eto2352 haha yeah. I got the Foil RC30 with two piece bar/stem, so if the bar is a standard 31.8mm clamp, then i'll just get a new bar. Bikedoc has some super narrow bars that are on my shortlist.
@@travispyle2905 yeah I love the Foil but I don't believe in steerer shims. 9 out of 10 dentists sending their kids to college love shims. :)
Wow, good save. Any idea what happened?
We were tossing our bikes in the back of a pickup truck to get these races and my derailleur hanger was pretty bent
Looks like a race then a group ride
I cant even get my heart rate up to 180 with feeling like im going to pass out. I guess i should stick with solo riding
Ah it's tough. If you can slowly build up with intervals that can help. But I like solo riding too, I would say 90% of my riding is solo
Any solution for my one cleat nut being loose all of a sudden and its making a cleaking sound when pedalling hard. Ty
The nut or thing in the footbed might be rotated slightly. Make sure it slots into the groove and sits flush against the carbon sole. If it keeps loosening you might want to try a new cleat bolt. I would not put threadlocker or anything like that on cleat bolts. Are they new cleats? Also check the pedal bodies for play, I had a pretty bad click and it was the pedal body bearings.
Your cornering is very impressive. It seems like you're closing a gap or taking wheels on every turn.
You're too kind! I think these corners fit my bike handling skills/ strengths pretty well. I also was running 30c tires. The corner at the bottom of the course into the start finish is one of my favorites of the whole year. I think we could easily do 45mph+ through it, maybe even 50mph. Ryan the race winner from the past 3 years would know 😂
Love tap 😂😂
You're all under arrest....it is clearly marked 25 mph speed limit! Awesome video, crazy watts over and over
I plead the 5th 😁 thanks!
Seeing Blake jump on the final time up the hill was one of those "game over" moments. Front row seat to a major watt bomb. Excellent work on 10th. Such a hard race.
Thanks Jason! It's a funny feeling to be doing 1200 watts and feel like your standing still compared to someone... He's going places for sure!
I heard Eamon broke a pedal in the final sprint? 😅
Yikes, I didnt know that. He's flatted in just about every race this year. He needs to splash some holy water on his bike
@@ChainlessTV this was info I gathered from Ryan's description of the race haha. Good racing! Seems like your fitness is coming around 👍
Great footage of the race! Raced Master 50+ and looks and feels like a whole different race. Strong finish!
Thanks! Congrats on getting out there, it's a unique race experience 😂
Thumbs up
watching this video makes this course look fing crazy especially doing as a 4/5 when I did it haha
It's a great course :) it's crazy whether youre a pro or a cat 5
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttttttttttttttttttt let's go TERUN ELLLLLLLLLLLLLLITE!
Crash at 11:30 looked nasty 😢
Seemed like potentially a broken arm/elbow for Travis. Also I've never seen a whole damn leg go through the spokes before.
@@kidsafe wow he didnt mention the foot fully through spokes, thats crazy
Yes unfortunately it's a season ender for him. He dislocated his elbow and broke his arm. We all are so used to riding in the gutter, but on this course it's just so slippery, just an accident...
@@ChainlessTV ya same spot got my teammate on the cool-down lap in an earlier race. Just trying to cruise around the speed bump instead of over it, and hit the deck
nice race!!! in my windows winter going to spring so slow....
tan wall tubeless still have thick sidewall for proper seal. on rolling resistant test the tan wall specialized turbo cotton tube type tyre with latex inner tube is faster than everything.
excellent useless knowledge It is not bike/tires fault that you are slow
Circa year 2000, Jobst Brant (author of The Bicycle Wheel) wrote many lengthy rants on colored tires - his position was that no one should ever buy a colored tire. His reasoning was that rubber is black. Adding colorants to something black just makes it look...black. Fancy colored rubber had to be chemically modified using plasticizers, which lightened the color but also altered the traction and rolling resistance of the resulting tire. His argument referred to the tread of the tire, not the sidewalls, so I'm not sure whether it applies here. Nonetheless, to this day, I'll only buy tires in black. In the absence of contradicting data, I figure it's better to be safe than sorry.
The sidewall colors aren't made for the looks. They're different compounds and those react differently to different surfaces. Especially the ability of damping micro impacts from the road surface vary greatly. Meaning under real conditions tires, that test slower in lab conditions, may outperform tires that perform better in the lab.
After destroying 3 Vitoria Corsa Pro tires in about 8 months from tears and a multitude of punctures in each tire, I've dumped using these and switched to GP 5000 AS TR. They have better puncture resistance, better handling in both wet and dry conditions but at the cost of about 2 watts/tire. I'll buy performance, longevity and reliability for 2 watts, Pat.
I also had trouble with Vitoria... Lots of people swear by them but I'm with you
Ugliness of the Tan walls slows 🐌 you down
Id suggest people look at the continental contact urban. Very underrated tire for winter training. Great wet grip, rolls pretty damn fast, puncture protection is decent and comes in a variety of sizes. I'd got 32c for road and 42c + for comfort tourer. Imo one of the best bang for buck tires out there. Prove me wrong!
Lulz... $100 for a tire... how have we come here...
Car tires are cheaper... its wild
Cycling is new golf. Of course, 5K's are handmade and materials used to manufacture product don't make up full price. Like, raw stones is one price and cut and polished is higher price.
GP5000 STR are lighter for a reason, so unless you are racing I think its a bad purchase. The weight loss is taken from sidewall and general puncture protection
What about transparent vs black side wall?
He forgot about that one.
Speed is over-rated.
Agree. Prefer puncture resistance and cornering confidence.
There are so many gp5000 tyres😂😂😂. Very confusing.
Been riding GP5000’s with latex tubes for years. The fastest combo there is. The trick is lots of powder on the tube and the inside of the tire. This allows the tube to move freely inside the tire and reduces friction. Kinda the same principle as tubeless. A very snappy and supple ride compared to butyl tubes. Compared to other riders in my group I have way less tire related issues including flats. And that includes the guys running tubeless.
A particular powder or will any talc or corn starch work equally well?
@@MrGoodaches I have always used corn starch with good results. Just don’t spill it all over your garage it will attract bugs
What powder do you use?
@@goffl8644 I have been using corn starch for years. Cheap and works great.
Cocaine.
i do not buy tires, i get tires, but you don't look in the teeth of a gifted horse
no because i am purposely buying them. :P
I'm not sure where you got your information. Every tire company tests their own tires and the do comparative testing to other products on the market. Some publish the results and some do not. Then there are individuals who create their own testing. So there are and will be different tests on tires. And relying on one printed test would be selling yourself short. Obviously most riders cant afford to try many tires to find a conclusion to there personal preference. I suggest talking to people who ride like you and weigh similar to you and ride where you ride. Then read and search out many test reviews. Learn about tire construction. Learn why different materials have been used for so many years. Just educate your self before going on You Tube and announcing that one tire may be better than another.
If your vocabulary includes the words:"I was just cruising around on the BicycleRollingResistance" You know you are in deep with the cycling lifestyle. Is there even a way back at this point ? xD haha been there myself m8.
I'm in wayy too deep
I call it "watt weenie"
I'd rather hope that cyclists actually buy tyres for their needs. If you are going on a 100 mile ride, would you choose a fast tyre or a tyre that isn't going to cause punctures but may be heavier and slightly slower ? I'd go for puncture resistance on that ride.
GP5Ks do it all
Actually the fastest option tested by brr is the non tubless Conti GP5000 combined with latex tubes. The testing data in the table is tested with butyl tubes in case of a non tubeless tire. There is a specific article about different type of tubes and several other on the gp5000 in different sizes. So if you don't want to run tubeless for some reason, dont get the STR and safe some money.
So I dont have any excuse for being slow other than that I’m weak 😅
Tubeless is annoying for someone who just wants to get out and ride
Are you sure you can make any judgement based on these data alone? We all ride on different bikes, with different wheels, made of different materials, with different spokes, on different roads with different surfaces, we set different tire pressures, based on SILCA pro calculator for example, we use different tire sizes and inner tubes, we ride at different speeds, different weather conditions and temperatures.. the variables go on and on. Meanwhile we're here looking at like 1 datum for each at a nondescript "ultra high pressure" and smooth roller tests that show barely a difference. We need to campaign for higher standards in this kind of testing. There aren't even any error bars! My god man how can we trust any of this without open, reproducible testing and some frieking error bars and measure of uncertainty. "These tires are 1.2W faster than those". "What's your uncertainty?" "+/- 5W.... On each measurement." "le sigh"
I agree, I'm an engineer and I would love better testing/ data but it is impossible to have a test that is representative of all criteria and conditions. I do wish bicyclerollingresistence (and basically all cycling "tests" on youtube) had some use of statistics to give credence to their results. My feeling is that the BRR test isnt perfect, but it sounds like they do a fair bit of work to control for things and keep it a standard protocol. Would it hold up in peer review? Ehh probably not but it's way more objective than a lot of other bike industry ratings and comparisons. I think they would need a sample size of 20+ tires to really get a good comparison with statistical power but I'm sure that is way too expensive for a guy that is just a bike nerd and does testing for a hobby. Where did you see the +-5 watt uncertainty?
the +/- 5w was made up to illustrate what happens when there isn't a serious attempt to look at accuracy and precision and put error bars around a measurement. I saw a similar case on youtube when someone was testing oversized rear derailleur pulley/jockey wheels. The torque sensor they were using was nowhere near the precision needed to measure the differences being claimed, had error bars been placed on the graphs representing this, they would have been massive. I think this was a Hambini roasting. You are right, testing is not easy. There are many variables. With good experimental design, someone could start a lab that does this type of testing. The experimental design has to be published ahead of testing. The results should be published in a multivariate model, taking into account the different conditions. The experimental design and modeling should be easy these days with AI helping. Crowd fund it? Collaborate with ConsumerReports, or Hambini? Your point about sourcing multiple tires of the same brands to get a sense of production variability is well taken. Although making assumption that variability is parametric (like normally distributed) you could get away with fewer than 20. Just a few from different batches could be enough. @@ChainlessTV
You should try the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport, on the bike at least the tube type version feels as it is a fraction faster than the 5000 (both ridden with Vredestein latex inner tubes).
Its funny, I had those in my cart but I went with the 5000s. They look like a very good alternative, I'll definitely give them a try. I like my goodyear car tires 😂
@@ChainlessTVThey are definetly worth a try. I am german, but I think the Goodyear are that fraction better that justifies the (at least here in germany) higher price, actual 35 to 46 Euros. Take in account that the Goodyear are slightly narrower, on a 13C rim ( I actual ride Campagnolo Shamal HPW wheels) the 23mm is about 21.5mm, the 25mm is about 23.6mm wide, but you can ride them with a lower pressure; the 23mm 5000 needed alt least 5.75-6bar, the Goodyear 25mm I had down to 4.7bar, and still no snakebites. Due to a broken and meanwhile 12 weeks ago fixed ellbow, I have to use an Bosch electric pump instead of my SKS Race kompressor floor pump - therefore the exact bar numbers.
The new "R" version is reasonably fast, but very puncture prone. I race on GP5K TT TRs.
