Hi there! I'm Mikaela and I'm the voice behind Voyageur Tripper, the outdoor adventure blog. I previously worked as a wilderness guide, leading canoe and hiking trips in Ontario, Quebec and Nunavut. I now spend my time paddling, hiking and camping as much as possible, and share resources to help others taking longer and more challenging trips in the backcountry.
Diving into the CHASM OF CHILLS along the Nahanni River, NWT
Hi friends, long time no video! I was writing a blog post about the Nahanni River and I was trying to write about this hike I went on through the Chasm of Chills.
Rather than trying to explain how fun it was, I thought I'd make a little (cheesy) montage of the GoPro footage I took during it. I hope you enjoy this short, sweet and silly compilation!

In this video, I hike from Big Sur Station to Sykes Camp via the Pine Ridge Trail. There are natural hot springs at Sykes Camp, which is the best way to relax after a long day of hiking. The route is about 15 km each way, with about 1500 m of elevation gain throughout. I hiked the Dog Mountain trail in April 2021. The sun was shining and the temperature was warm, despite there being a lot of snow lingering on the trail. This is an excellent beginner's hiking trail in Vancouver. The trail is only 5 km with less than 200 m of elevation gain. Over 24 days our group paddled the Missinaibi River, one of the best destinations for canoe trips in Canada. We encountered dozens of exciting rapids, completed far too many portages, enjoyed countless delicious meals and built life long connections.
Oh boy, I sure miss canoe camping. What great times there was to be had.

Hi Mikaela This is the first time I've watched any of your videos. I was at Sunol's little Yosemite on Memorial day . I was wondering why you dont post videos anymore. I enjoyed watching this and a couple of other ones.
Hi Gail! Thanks for your comment! I moved to California for a new job and for the first six months I wasn’t that busy and was able to do lots of trips and make RUclips videos about them. But then things started to get busy and its been like that for the past two years. I only do a couple trips each year, and I don’t film them anymore. That said, I do want to get back into it and I’ll be changing jobs this year, so maybe I’ll start uploading again. Comments like these remind me that it’s something I enjoy, and others enjoy it too :)

I was wondering if something happened to you and that's why you haven't been posting anymore. So, I'm glad all is well with you😊 When life slows down some for you, I look forward to new videos from you. I shared your video with my friend that I went to Sunal Regional park with the other day. And we both think you have alot of courage and guts for going solo backpacking in the wilderness. I admire you for your bravery 💪😉👍 We get nervous and worry about mountain lions or bears when we go hiking😬 We only do day trips. Take care🙋♀️

This was in the middle of July!
Ss teenagers in 1966, 67, 68 we packed in to Barlow and Sykes camps . That was before the devastating forest fires. It was so idyllic to hike and camp in those remote areas . I fancied myself a Taoist monk .
Amazing! It’s hard for me to imagine what it would have looked like without the fire damage, but I’m sure it was beautiful!
I live on the Spanish I see these kinda tourist alot during the summer we always get a laugh at them city slickers packing so much especially so much food with packaging we find and clean on on a regular basis if your going to enjoy the outdoors please keep in mind the more I pack the more I carry and the more store bought food u bring the more garbage is left behind there are plenty of fish and Barry's bring a banik mix and lard it's all u need take time out to catch fish and pick Barry's you'll enjoy it more at a slower pace
God bless the people who fight to preserve open space. We need it more than ever.

That stretch from Half Dump to the Grotto is one of the gnarliest on the whole Bruce Trail. Great video, thanks for sharing your adventure.
Cows are generally not predatory. But it is a good idea to avoid being between them and their calves. There are, however, mountain lions in these hills. They are pretty stealthy and the avoid humans, so you usually won't see them. But they are there.

Mikaela, probably mucked up the spelling. Anyway, I watched this a year ago and now RUclips has prompted me to watch it again. I am a metric person so good to have you giving the metres etc and for the old fashioned country you seem to be living in, the translation would be helpful. Hikkng in April with unmelted snow is looks easily than walk on the trail in summer with tree roots and muds
Great video. I have a question if I may, do you think the tent pads are big enough for two tents? I am taking a group of 12 soon, I have 3 people per pad, I am wondering if I can fit a 2 man tent and 1 man tent on one pad, or possibly even 2 x 2 man tents?

How long did it take to get to maple leaf lake?
I liked your vid. Many people do this hike solo. I did it in May of 1970 when I was about 25-26 with one other guy. I remember the trails were pretty good. The trip in was the toughest because of all the uphill. We got a late start and camped the first night a little over halfway in. We just slept in our bags and I used my pack for a pillow. About 3am I fealt some rustling and it was a raccoon with his paw inside my pack under my head tearing apart a ham sandwich I had wrapped in foil. He didn't get much. We had brought collapsible fishing poles and caught rainbow trout in the stream near Sykes Camp as the streams and creeks were still flowing pretty good. We stayed for about 3 days and the hot spring was really a nice gift to appreciate. It was flowing right out of the base trunk of a big redwood tree like magic. Everybody was in the buff but all friendly. We took some mushrooms we had with us and the place was very lovely. Now in my 70s, I don't think I could do that hike today. And, I'm sure it's overrun with hikers nowadays. But, I recommend it if you're up to it.

Did the Dumoine about 15 years ago. It was our first whitewater trip. Lots of fun. Super high water levels when we did it. I see the bridge at the start has not improved…
Bison are scary, but cows are pretty tame. I think there have been close to zero cow attacks on hikers, and I don't think many bear attacks. I could not bring bear spray in Sequoia Park on a trip there. I was living on the edge.

It was difficult to show the pools at all as I didn’t want to film other people using them (invasion of privacy and all). You’ll just have to see them for yourself!

Great video thanks for posting. I think it's so wonderful that we live in a beautiful province like Ontario where people --especially young women that can camp solo in relative peace and safety and not be stalked by crazies or psychos unlike in some other countries in North America, "wink, wink" if you know what I mean.
Amazing! Dis you have any bear spray or bear horn with you? I’ll be on the same spots in September and can’t find enough info about bear encounters in the area.
I didn't carry either with me. The bears in this area are black bears and tend to avoid people / be non-confrontational. If you were to bring something, I'd recommend a horn over bear spray since it's effective from a further distance. Enjoy the route!

Hi, one question, did you have to go to Cyprus lake in order to register and get the parking permit? or htey have a office in halfway log Dump?
I had to go to the one near Cyprus - there wasn't one at Halfway Log Dump. The office is only part way down the road to Cyprus though - I didn't have to go all the way to the campground.

I parked at Half Way Log Dump. I went to the visitors center before hand to purchase on overnight parking permit and then could park overnight :)
Hey! Will probably do this hike in April. Do you have a video on what you pack? Also, did you see ppl w/ dogs on this trail and would you recommend it as a dog friendly trail?

I think it depends on your dogs experience hiking, there's a few sections that are tricky but overall it's a suitable trail for a dog :)
i chuckled listening to you state your fears while the stampede ran the other way. (my bf is 6'4" and he had the same reaction when we encountered TWO cows in the fremont hills last saturday)
