It would be nice to get hundreds of men and women to get the old 1091 back to her glory. We need to keep these old vessels alive. Great job to the men and women who are part of bringing her back. Thank you all very much
Sad to see it on worse shape now.
Was a railroad modeler as a kid and just got back into it in a big way. Was deciding what California RR to model and just settled on Eel River and Eureka RR , circa 1880s, from Scotia to Eureka. Naturally, i live here! Thanks for this info !!! 🤗
LMAO I went all the way from the bridge in blue lake to mad river beach.......don't ever try n one up me .
so you're OK with those 3 and others rafting on the Mad as long as they don't one-up you by rafting further than you did? Is that what you mean? just curious
@pnwEarthmother 👍.
Does the USS New Jersey chanel know about this?
Sorry - we don't know what the New Jersey Chanel is, but feel free to let them know.
@@humboldtoutdoors6082 The battleship New Jersey has a really busy RUclips channel, and they often visit other ships. Reach out, they will surely have some others they can introduce you to ...
Was stationed Coast Guard Air Station Mckinleville CA. Beautiful place to live 1981-83.
both in the same area of Eureka? Ide love to visit these...
Go south on 101 - take the Elk River Rd exit drive east, and they're both on the right. Elk River Rd ends at Headwaters (5 miles from 101), and u can see the Falk Historical site there
to add to below comment. A fun day trip is visit the 2 bridges, then drive up Elk River rd a few miles to take a short walk to the old town of Falk. Here's a link to the Falk Vid also on this channel ruclips.net/video/Pr_M2h9OqQI/видео.html ruclips.net/video/Pr_M2h9OqQI/видео.html
Dry docking historic ships is so much more efficient and cost effective. Those bozos back east almost lost The Sullivans due to their stubbornness.
"Don't Give Up The Ship!" Great job guys.
As if... Danco ruined the cookhouse. It may be lost forever. Brutal mismanagement. Im 55.been going there since 75. A huge loss to the community.
A trick I've used often on rust to slow it down is coat it with rust oleum until I'm ready to fully prep it and paint steel.
Great idea. They do spray a de-ruster on it a few days before. Then they use an air compression driver tool to kind of jack-hammer the big chunks of rust. Then they spray again, let sit a few days and grind off finer rust. Then paint with sealant and deck paint. It's tough tedious work mostly on hands and knees!
All my respect for the team and what you do 🇺🇸🇳🇱
Since we filmed this last year, they've made TREMENDOUS progress! Much of the upper deck structure has been de-rusted , restored, and repainted. It appears they've successfully sealed the deck over the summer to stop leaks during the winter rains. They've also done alot of work restoring some of the interior spaces. These guys are really working hard to preserve this historic ship! At some point, we plan to film an update of all they've accomplished since this was filmed last year
This i all wonderful news .I hope you are able to film very soon and get it posted here and anywhere you can .i hope a go fund me campaign can be started and added too.. Those men are hero's and mighty warriors to undertake this labor of love .
@@LoganJohnson-lm2bh That is VERY kind of you to say. I copied your comment and passed it onto the 1091 crew chief, Royal McCarthy, who is in the documentary. If you'd like to email him directly, it's RoyalBMcc@gmail.com
I lived in Humboldt County for 30 years. A wonderfully magical and historical place. How fortunate Hubby and I found Ferndale, Ca. We were a young struggling couple with little girls. Larry worked two jobs and went to college on the GI Bill to take care of us. He constantly looked for a job that would provide a decent wage and benefits for our family. He finally found one in 1974, when we moved from Sacramento, Ca. to Ferndale, Ca. so he could work at Centerville Beach, Naval Facility. My oldest daughter still lives there in Scotia, Ca. with her husband . My second grandson works at Scotia Redwood Mill, one the longest running company towns left. First grandson lives in Fortuna and runs his own business. I miss Humboldt County and consider it a highlight of my life to have enjoyed this area of the world. I go back as often as I can. I worked at Humboldt State U for 13 years and still miss that. It was a unique experience with great folks to work with and staff and faculty that were like friends and family. ❤ Centerville Beach Facility closed down in 1992 and we moved to Wa. State in 1993. Hubby and youngest daughter were fortunate again to live in a beautiful part of the world, in another small town, this time on the Puget Sound. Peace from Nicki and Sarah
Thanks for the interesting story about your extended family's connection to Humboldt. Hope you get up to the lighthouse next time you visit!
Next summer I hope. I am really enjoying you channel. Keep up the good work.
It's great. These folks speak as if there is no need to further protect our nation. Let's all just get high and have a pretend love fest.
Great film, this ship is an amazing piece of history, and these guys... they are doing wonderful work taking care of it!
I remember seeing that vessell cruising out towards the jetty once or twice in the 90s after the owner had it painted.
It's insane that this ship is not a museum ship, I have no clue.
Wow!! What a great presentation! I just finished reading the book, "Before the Dolphins Guild," by Jon Humboldt Gates, which chronicles these events. This film is a wonderful addition that adds some great visual balance. Nice work!!
Thanks! As you know, Jon's book has SO many more fascinating details we couldn't fit in our 20 minute +/- time constraint. The 1915 archival footage of the three H-class subs we found is pretty cool!
@@humboldtoutdoors6082 -- it was a great show!! you folks do a great job!!
Stoked to learn more about the Trinidad head lighthouse!
Great! The lighthouse will be open to the public on Saturday, Oct 5 10-noon. With free tours by docents from the Trinidad Museum Society. It's about a 10 minute walk from the parking lot, with dazzling views along the way!
The ship is in pretty good shape!
I would have liked to see or hear any information on how she was placed on shore and if there are any long-term plans to ever refloat her.
The credits list 3 sources with more info at 29:45, (e.g. why it was brought ashore). They don't have the funds to refloat it. So, they hope to relocate it, which is significantly less expensive. If they can't find a site to relocate it, the ship will be scrapped. If you'd like more details, their contact info is also in the credits. Thanks for the interest!
@@humboldtoutdoors6082 Thanks for your reply.
We've received alot of requests for donation info: Donations can be sent to LSIL-1091 Museum Assoc. PO Box 111, Samoa CA 95564 Donations are tax deductable as they are a 501c non profit organization. Donations will mostly be used for supplies and equipment to continue repairing the ship. The crew is all volunteer and pay for the supplies mostly out of their own pocket. If you'd like more info on how donations would be used, contact the 1091 Museum Assoc. at RoyalBMcc@gmail.com ..We've passed all these kind comments onto the crew and it has really encouraged them...thank you! They're now working extra hard to patch all the deck holes before the winter rains start up to protect the interior. They're still attempting to secure a location to relocate the 1091 as the ship cannot remain in this location.
Thank you 🙏
This is awesome. Keeping the memory of the greatest generation alive. They should try and recruit youth groups from different organizations like the Scouts, Navy JROTC, Sea Cadets, schools, ROTCs, etc., and VFW and American Legion, even Active Duty and Reserve military units. If they get at least one or two organizations once or twice a month for a day or two, even spending the night on board, they can get more work done and bring that ship back to life. Maybe charge some money for entry to visitors, like at Patriots Point, to help cover the expenses.
My dad was a Seabee Chief. These Chiefs exude the " Can do!" Sttitude my dad had sbout things. How can we contribute to the restoration?
How true - their "can-do" spirit is inspiring! To contact the 1091 crew, you can email them at RoyalBMcc@gmail.com or PO Box 111, Samoa CA 95564 (We're just volunteers who film shows for Humboldt's Community Access TV channel)
Chiefs get it done! No doubt the 1091 will be restored
Wow it looks a whole lot better below decks. Thanks for showing this:)
They've done alot of work on the outside since we filmed this.
Thank you Humboldt Outdoors & crew of LSI (L) 1091... Very interesting and informative... well filmed too - must've been something getting around the decks at your height! To the crew: thank you for your service - both then & also now. It's wonderful of you to keep the ship in good shape for our younger generations to experience. These are the things they need to learn about and gain an understanding and appreciation for: folks like you. Cheers from Canada.
He was so thrilled to be aboard that ship a few head bumps were worth it. He's good friends with the crew now and regularly visits them. We'll pass your kind words of encouragement onto the 1091 crew.
Awesome, tour! Thank you!!!
Excellent, as always, Ray, thank you. Speaking of beaches, the media has stopped covering what's happening at Centerville Beach; any chance for an update? Is there any parking lot left? Has it stabilized? I'm sure the geology of the area is fascinating.
Thanks for the Centerville Beach idea Korina. We're working on two new episodes now, so maybe after that? I haven't heard any updates on it either. See ya around town!
@@humboldtoutdoors6082 Cool! See ya!
How awesome to see this vessel preserved on land! She served our country well, and I salute her! 🌹⚓
Having a hard time understanding why she's hauled out and why the exterior paint is in such awful condition, yet she looks pristine inside!
Since filming this, they've made alot of progress getting the outside in shape. Keep in mind, it's only 6 older vets, ages 70-90 working hard as they can as volunteers. It's hard work! Hauled out b/c Eureka was concerned it would sink at the dock.
@@humboldtoutdoors6082 Do they plan to put her back in? Looks ready to fire up and go. It isn't good for the structure of a ship to be out of water, the force of the water does a great deal of work dealing with the weight topside. She'll have structural failures on land.
@@jcdenton6074 It will most likely end up a museum ship on land if they can find a site and $$ (about $50k) to move it. They said refloating would cost 10 times more. The site is a future wind farm terminal, and if they don't move it, it will be scrapped.
@@humboldtoutdoors6082 Windmills - good heavens. Pretty awful trade.
i've been in Humboldt now for less than 2yrs and am so grateful for these historic stories
Hope you get a chance to visit the USS Milwaukee memorial at low tide to see the remains of the shipwreck. There's a map of its location in this episode's intro.
Try badgering some money out of your congressman. Maybe talk to some paint manufacturers and sandblasting companies, with the aim to preserve history, and they get some free advertising. You could even try talking to the people who built her (if they still exist).
Hi from the UK, thank you for sharing this.
Bravo.Thenks.Go Ahead
I enjoyed living in Eureka for a couple years in the mid 90’s, incredible place to retire but be careful where you live though, much of Eureka has near constant overcast conditions but a few miles out of city limits is beautiful sunshine. The area was a magnet for useless hippies that sold their parents house in LA in the 70’s-80’s and moved north when they grew tired of the “diversity” in their neighborhoods. If I could, I’d live in Fortuna, great small town.
Thank You for the interesting video tour of "Old 1091." Back in the mid 90s, while living in McKinleyville & Eureka, my dentist was Ralph Davis, who owned this vessel at that time. He was a delightful man & a great 'old school' dentist. His deep-sea 'fishing trips' would often take he & his crew 200 miles out into the Pacific on this well-heeled ex-US Navy ship, & would last for weeks at a time. At that period The 1091 was docked near the under-bridge boat ramp near the Carson Mansion in downtown Eureka, California. I used to paddle my kayak around it at least 3 times a month, each time 'patting it`s hull' in appreciation for it`s role in America`s fight against tyranny during WW2 & beyond......
Awesome 🌹⚓
Wow! I am not sure how this story came to me. I am very glad that it did! Your comments really added to the story! Thank you for sharing! Have a great day!

Thanks for posting Very interesting video. Cheers to the Samoa cookhouse. Best breakfast in Humboldt county. I’m still stuffed and that was 34 years ago.
Brilliant bit of film, well done all who are trying to keep the 1091 ship Sharpe, 👍🇬🇧♥️🇺🇲
I really enjoy these videos that go in depth about the history of this beautiful county we all share.
We're especially grateful to Jon Humboldt Gates for all his hard and diligent work in uncovering the documents and eyewitness accounts of this story! Since you find this story interesting, you'd enjoy his book "Before the Dolphins Guild" with so many more fascinating details - available for free check-out at the Humboldt library.
Thanks for sharing. I hope people in the area support the vessel.
Great video!
she's not listed on a lot of registers of surviving combat ships of WWII, which is incredible due to her size. you'd think more people would know about her. I can expect something like a higgins boat or a PT boat resurfacing somewhere, but not a whole landing ship. need to get the word out, folks. she's still here, and she won't be much longer if people don't do something about it.
here's the 5 minute vid of the 1091 crew working on the ship you might find interestinruclips.net/video/SMUd47zujEMg/видео.html

Yup, It would be nice to see the same story as for D-Day Veteran Landing Craft Tank 7074 in England
My dad and I used to drive our sand rail out there from our house off Peninsula Ave Arcata back in the 70’s. Someone broke into one and pulled out some big rubber rafts and other old odd and ends. We also used to go shoot our M1 carbine out there and sometimes we would go grab our 1941 Army truck and wench burls out of the surf. Good times back before the hippies started crying about everything and the Sierra club moved in, what a bunch scumbags those people are.
Really good video... thank you for all your work, research and presentation. The interview with Jon was really good, he's such a knowledgeable person. I've been waiting for really low negative tide to drone the Milwaukee, at least to see how much is still visible.... keep up the work, greatly appreciated... :) Dock
It'd be great if you could get some drone shots of the Milwaukee wreckage when it's completely exposed. The only other drone footage I know of is from Barry Evans and there was still water. Thanks for noticing the hard work Dock - "labor of love" as they say..for you too, I'm sure!
A very big thank you for touring this old workhorse troop transport 😊❤😊 personally I thank each and every volunteer for working to dtop water from going below Decks. 😊❤😊 On another WE-2 small vessel that is restored and operational is in Portland Oregon. Down by a big shipyard ( Todds I believe) it is PT- 658 it is also all voluntary work on restoration. The big thing they got was a covered boat house for the PT. It is also open to the public. The volunteer are just like there Retired Navy and CG gentlemen Sailors. 😊❤😊
How kind of you to say so. We sent your words of encouragement to the 1091 crew - they're still working hard on that ship!

So glad you enjoyed it. Yes! I plan to film an update eventually. Been going aboard every few weeks or so to film their progress for that. Those guys are really making some great progress. They're working hard before the winter rains hit.
