This is the first video I’ve seen of yours! I really love the way you broke down the reality of overconsumption! My favor always has the thought process of “recycle, reduce, reuse” as well as “do I actually have a need for this or do I just want it, how often will I use it” before buying anything. My parents were within the lower middle class to ‘middle’ middle class, so we always had to pass down things and do our best to maintain the things we had to make them last. I do also think some of the problem is the actual quality of things in the stores today. I’ve had more clothes fall apart in the last 5 years than I ever have. I still have clothes from 2008 that are in good condition, where I can get items off seemingly similar quality that fall apart or rip with a 2 year span.

Vestiaire Collective is the same. It’s hit or miss. I bought a bag which had obviously passed their first phase authenticity process because it was for sale. I went to sell it myself and Vestiaire bounced it and hence I realised via them it was counterfeit.

diamond mining is now very regulated as far as the "blood diamond" scandal goes. its also a very expensive process. opening a diamond mine takes about 12 years and hundreds of millions if not billions of investment dollars. the fact of the matter is that while yes their prices are extremely inflated due to marketing, we simply would not have diamonds if they didnt sell for so much money. the truth is that they are expensive to mine and thus they sell for a lot. what would be the point of investing so much money and time into mining for them if the mine owners couldnt quadruple their original investment? natural diamonds are a gift to us humans because they tell us so much important information about our earths history and what processes are required to form diamonds in the first place over billions of years. i rest my case lol.

Commenting because I think you deserve a boost for this video. Also, I think it's wild how decluttering caught on with youtubers doing hauls- while still continuing to do hauls. But then again, many people seem to shop like a youtuber even though their jobs are something else. I kind of understand, we all feel more and more anxious about the future, but it's still wasteful.

We only de-clutter around Christmas because we don't have a ton of stuff. I have my art supplies all of which I use, we have books which have all been read, and a limited amount of clothes between myself and my partner. I own 4 pairs of pants and maybe like 15 shirts. No seasonal clothes except like 3 hoodies.

For that feeling of "get rid of the same old same old" I rearrange furniture and decorations I already own, switch up curtains and bedding between rooms, when it's warmer weather and blankets are used less I'll use them to cover the sofa or something. Honestly just switching things you already have around gives just as much improvement to that feeling, and has an extra sense of achievement attached

From an European (Swiss) POV, the USA has a massive overconsumption issue. I think it also relates to the appalling work/life balance you guys have. You have very little free time compared to most of the world so I suppose that buying shit gives you that little spark of happiness and feeling that the insane hours at work being worth it. Also living with debt as if it's the normal/logical thing to do is mind boggling to me.

People wanna make decluttering content, but instead of helping neighbors, family and friends with their spaces, they just buy a ton of stuff to declutter. I'm decluttering because a lot of my clothing doesn't fit properly anymore, but I've been doing it slowly over a year lol. I bought like 5-6 pieces of clothing, but that's it. edit: If you live in America, and need to donate clothing Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) does picks up. All you gotta do is set up a date for the pickup, label the boxes or bags, and then set them outside an hour or so before hand. I've done it a couple of times, and I know my clothing is going to go to people who need it instead of a landfill.
