I play the TimeGuessr daily challenge with variable degrees of success. I'm not particularly well qualified, I'm just an amateur who happens to be reasonably well-travelled and expensively educated. Please enjoy witnessing all the gaping holes in my historical and geographical knowledge.

Absolute carnage on today's TimeGuessr daily 🤦🏻♂️
1. Great guess! 2. Korean language signs and a Czechoslovak tram is an instant North Korea giveaway. Tram line #1 and a generally good state of buildings suggest Pyongyang, as for the year, I would probably go early 2000s. It's mind boggling how this country is stuck in time 3. The character on the cigarette pack is clearly Hebrew, as are the letter on the leftmost guy's patch. This suggest either a Six-day war or Yom Kippur, probably a closer inspection of the map would point it down further. 4. An unsafe amount of pelican birds on each and every imagery from Midway Atoll is a long lasting meme in the Geoguessr community and it was my initial guess, but I quickly rejected it like nah, it's a military object in the middle of the ocean, why would someone take a picture of people biking there :D Also that building didn't seem like anything that's shown on Google Streetview there. 5. This bridge is pretty famous and unique in its kind, I knew it was Florence, but would probably need some time to pinpoint its location. As for the time period, I'd go something like early 60s, 1963 or so. Great video, really enjoyed it!
Come back, we miss you
thanks for checking in! sorry for the long hiatus - been a very busy few weeks. I will definitely get started again soon!
💀did the exact same thing on Bhutan; found the same text, said nah gotta be Nepal 🤝
@@carllandberg2896 🫂
1) It is a British team, not a Premier League. The stadium looks too small for Premier. As much as I scroll through the picture, I can not identify the team. I read something like Wrexham, F.C. Got it, it is a team from Wales. No cell phones and sunglasses style 00s. Wrexham Stadium, 2003 (9,298). 2) Piazza di Spagna in Rome. A must see in the city, 1982 (9,600). 3) This looks like a typical official royal family painting. Discarding the entire Middle East, there are only Royals in Japan, Thailand and Bhutan. I am pretty sure we are in Bhutan. Thimphu central area (happy for being a quite small city with only one commercial avenue), 2017 (9,800). 4) I can not read the sign and I do not recognise that TV tower in the background. It looks like Germany and also the girls look Germanic, but I am going in completely blind. Koln-Bonn area, 1979 (5,540). 5) There never was a referendum in Wales, right? Who is Mae Cymru? I found a Marks & Spencer in Charles Street, Cardiff, 2010 (6,832). FINAL SCORE: 41,070 Remarks: - A big failure with three 5k in locations (Wrexham, Rome and Bhutan). Hungarian and Wales rounds ruined me. - I do not know about your countries, but in 4) a ‘Villa Babylon Relax-Center’ in my country cannot be anything but a brothel...
I got the locations well at the start, recognizing the prince of Bhutan, but then I went for the TV tower near Vilnius for the 4th and then Cardiff rather than Newport.
I say this, but now that I actually looked it up, he's the king of Bhutan, not the prince.
@@Baiko I identified it quite quickly as it was a royal portrait (republics do not make such family portraits) and the monarchies in Central Asia are Thailand and Bhutan. Ruling out Thailand, it had to be Bhutan.
@@relander6459 @baiko great deduction work from both of you on the Bhutan round!

I was also surprised by 1919 ... watching your vid I just realized that it said 15/16 on the shirts in R5 (eg 10:22), totally missed that
Well spotted!
1) This bridge in Sydney has already published on TG several times. I understand almost nothing about Formula 1, but this does not look like a very current car model. Sydney, 2015 (9,800). 2) Rivoli is the street of the Louvre Museum, the problem is that it is a very long street. Rue Rivoli, Paris, 1918 (9,941). 3) Back to Kampala, Uganda. I still remember that huge taxi parking a few days ago, and this place “King Fahd P----” should not be too far from there. Oh yes, I think I have found the right place: King Fahd Plaza, 2018 (9,600). 4) We are in France but the car plate of the Renault right behind him is from Barcelona (B). French plates at the time were black, so it makes me think we are near the border with Catalonia-Spain. Too few clues. I am 100% sure it is the French Blue Coast, from Perpignan to Nice. This is a small coastal town, but I am going to stay halfway, Marseille, 1973 (9,135). 5) This is also already published in TG. Leicester City's tour of Thailand after winning its Premier League in 2016. Bangkok central area, 2016 (9,959). FINAL SCORE: 48,435 Remarks: - Open bar of cold beer to whoever identified Saint Tropez in 4). No, Monko, that car plate is Spanish (black letters on white background, the old French one was the other way round) and belongs to Barcelona (B). - Why do TimeGuessr repeat events like the Leicester one? 5)
@@relander6459 great score, well done!
It is a bit of a consolation to see someone else not recognizing the Afghan flag ... though I went even further away to central america P.S.: 9:28 ... not to be taken out of context ... 🙂
😂
I went to Phoenix instead of Tucson and Kabul instead of Kandahar, otherwise generally ok-ish scores, can't remember exactly since I don't have them open anymore. At least the rest were in the correct cities. E: I did actually have it still in a tab open, 40,263 total score.
I like when Monkoguessr says French Words in the Monkoguessieur accent
The giant oscar statue on the left side of the frame: 👁👄👁
😂
1) Despite of the airplane Iranian flag, I see a .ir and all the characters are Persian. No way to find Mahshahr airport because they do not appear on the map translated into English. I am going to Shiraz, more or less in the centre of the country, 2017 (8,757). 2) 60th Anniversary of the Oscars. We have had a similar round before and I seem to remember that the Oscars started in 1930. It is not the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, but definitely we are in that area. Melrose Avenue, L.A., 1990 (9,671). 3) I am terrible at Commonwealth rounds. This is definitely Europe and French soldiers in the background. I would say about a commemoration of some war between France and England. Then, we should be either in northern France or southern England. The style of the people seems more Frenchified than Brit style. I am going to Le Havre, France, 2009 (9,136). 4) Dam Square in Amsterdam, in front of the Royal Palace, impossible to miss it on any trip to Amsterdam. I would say it is a Pink Floyd gig, 1972 (9,999). 5) I do not know about Broad St in NYC, but it has to be in the Battery (very South Manhattan). It is the area of NYC with the most street names that are not numbers. Yes, Broad St. I have it, next to Wall Street Stock Exchange building, 1912 (9,800). FINAL SCORE: 47,363 Remarks: - I had the opportunity to visit Iran in 2016. I felt very loved and protected, nothing like what the media reports about Iran. The problem is that since then I need a visa to enter the USA (ESTA is not enough for me after visiting Iran).
I had no idea about anything and bad guesses, the only one with a good score both location and date wise was the last one. I looked around Iran for Mahrshahr but didn't go to the south because of the snow in the picture. Second one I did bad on the year, and also thought the Oscars were at the Chinese theater. Third one I for some reason thought they were American reenactors (even though they were all redcoats). 4th I was at least in the correct city but 5 years off, the last one got the correct street and 2 years off.
I think the "snow" was actually foam used by the fire-brigade, but I see how that can be confusing as to the potential location
Isn't it amazing how - with these photos - you can sometimes miss things that you don't expect? Take 09:10 for example. You were basically zoomed in on the gun about to shoot JPII and did not see it ... neither did I, when I did my round. When I knew about it watching your vid, I saw it all the time.
Funny isn’t it. I think we all missed that clue yesterday. Although it wouldn’t have helped me anyway!
#haircut
1) The landscape is none other than Sydney. It has to be a zoo right in front of the city bay. I got it, Taronga Zoo. Old Google logo, 2014 (9,294). 2) This very street has already been published. Budapest, Pest central area, 1984 (9,759). 3) This is during the opening of the Olympic Games in Paris, over the Seine, 2024 (9,931). 4) Portrush, Altrim...no idea. Considering the buildings it does not look like AU-NZ. W.L. could refer to West Lands? Then could be Ireland, Cork around, 1900 (9,114). 5) This was the assassination attempt by the Turkish Ali Agka on John Paul II in the Vatican City in 1981. I remember it. (9,998). FINAL SCORE: 48,096 Remarks: - Pretty easy round except for Ireland. I was a bit lucky, the houses were typical Irish, although I went to the other end of the island. - Very good your round, Monko.
Well done for spotting the gun! Very good score
@@Monkoguessr Actually I did not see it, but I did remember this picture long time ago.
I had a possiblility of good score. Got 9998, 9999, 9917, 1012, 8400.
I had never heard of County Antrim, and didn't even think that Co. would mean something other than Colorado.
@@Baikooof bad luck. Amazing scores on the first 3 rounds!
Hi - you were right the pin was off in round 4, I have updated this for any future players and added 2 points to your total in the database for what it's worth !
thank you Gus!
1) Yosemite Park, CA, 1929 (9,360). 2) Johor, Malaysia, 2017 (9,874). 3) Not sure, but I should say Copenhagen, and 2023 due to Ukraine flags (3,997). 4) Obama in Tanzania. Probably in Dar es Salaam airport, 2016 (9,583). 5) New Bond Street, London. Second time in this very street, 1943 (9,297). FINAL SCORE: 42,095 Remarks: - Terrible guess in 3). One of my worsts ever. - “Karibu” is “welcome” in Swahili language. - You are getting better round after round, Monko. Congratulations.
@@relander6459 thanks mate! Bad luck on round 3; you were on for a strong round otherwise
I got tricked by Ukraine, and by the tree not being on the road it was named after. 😅
@@Monkoguessr Far East and North-Centre Europe are my main weaknesses....
I only knew about the Pakistan Hyderababd, so I went there, of course. It also has 1.8m inhabitants, so not actually small (but 1/4 of the India one).
- Let me tell you the story of why there are macaques in Gibraltar. It is the only primate living in the wild in the whole Europe. Their official name are "Berberia Macaques" (Berberia is the colonial name for the coastal area of North Africa, from Morocco to Libya, hence the Berbers). For almost 10 centuries, Gibraltar was conquered by many different civilisations due to its strategic location, but it was with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 when Gibraltar passed into British hands. In the same treaty, France lost a large part of Canada to England, and Spain lost The Netherlands, Gibraltar and the island of Menorca to English, as well as the maritime monopoly on the slave route to America. In other words, after the Treaty of Utrecht, England became the world's leading power. Macaques existed in Gibraltar before the arrival of the English in 1713. It is believed that they were brought earlier by the Spanish from North Africa as pets, but there were very few of them. England gave them a lot of protection and made it possible for them to breed en masse. Today they are a major tourist attraction and are in no danger of extinction.
In good company with the Pakistani Hyderabad Confusion Coalition 🫡🇵🇰
1) Noel Gallagher with Tony Blair. Yesterday they announced their joint return to stages. Knowing the temperament of both, let's see how long they lasts. Probably we are in Downing Street. I used to be a big fan of Oasis and I believe they released their hit “Wonderwall” in 95-96. So probably this pic is a little bit later, after their success, 1997 (10,000). 2) Man, I did a few of days ago a complete year list of the iPhone releases. When was 7? I had the iPhone5 in 2015, so this must be released a couple of years later, in 2017. I read “South India largest Institute”. I see a small reference on the chef's advertising to ‘Hyderabad’ or something like that, but after checking it is not in South India, but Centre India. Anyway, Hyderabad, India, 2017 (9,959). 3) We are in France, but where? Is it about the construction of a ship? I have no idea about engineering, but it looks like a shipyard. La Rochelle, France, 1970 (8,951). 4) These are the macaques of the Rock of Gibraltar. Late 50s. 1957 (9,561). 5) It is contradictory. Over many years there were several “West Ends” in the north of NYC, but at the same time ‘Coney Island lunch’, which is to the south. Actually, it does not even feel like we are in NYC. Ups, Baltimore signal. Orleans Street, Baltimore, 1963 (9,925). FINAL SCORE: 48,396 Remarks: - Good to know South India starts in Hyderabad 2). So then, where does the south of the UK start? In Birmingham? - Duda went to the same Hyderabad in Pakistan in 2) as you… - Open bar of cold beer to whoever recognised the fuselage of the Concorde in 3).
Great score today pal!
@@Monkoguessr Also in the chef's advertising in 2) there is a date: "3rd March - 3rd April, 2017".
1) Very careful. Cannes has also its Walk of Fame. Unfortunately, I do not recognise the actress. The atmosphere seems more US American than French. Then Hollywood Boulevard, 1954 (6,986). 2) That police uniform and hat patch is difficult to recognise. The one in the middle looks like a journalist with a Duty Free bag, but those high snowy mountains make me think of the Himalayas. Maybe Islamabad-Pakistan airport on an expedition to K2, 1977 (8,748). 3) Something like “Philban… StraBe”. That B (reading “ss”) is definitely Germanic. But German car plates were never black. Vienna, 1976 (9,757). 4) I read “Marseille” in a lateral. Palais Longchamp, 1934 (9,950). 5) Lady Diana where? Any place in Central Asia from Lebanon to Pakistan. Outskirts of Amman, Jordan, 1989 (5,648). FINAL SCORE: 41,089 Remarks: - I missed "Kabul" in the airport tower in 2)... - Extremely difficult rounds for me today.
I got very similar score (41,546) with generally worse guesses on the location, but I guessed border of India and Pakistan for the last one and got 8374 points, and I was closer on the date on the first one and got 9549 for that.
Good tip on the Cannes walk of fame! Should have known that as I've been to Cannes several times!
These horse-drawn carriages are very typical for Vienna as a tourist attraction. And the "l" you saw was actually a "1.". Street signs in Vienna always have a number at the start which indicate the "borough" they are in (similar to the Paris signs, basically), 1. being "downtown".
@@duda3396 good to know!
HOBONATION
EspressoGuessr here! I own a coffee shop in my real life, so I am definitely going to be too busy to be playing daily, but I have been playing with my 9 year old son and, but for that Iceland round (it does look like Denmark) and that BS with the fake out on Wales, he would have beaten you. We look forward to the next challenge.
1) I am totally confused. The official building shows a French flag, the regatta sign in the bottom also in French, refers to a nautical activity in Lombardy but that is in the north of Italy. I literally do not know where to go. I must trust for Lombardie signal and point a random city lake. Salo, Italy, 1973 (9,787). 2) Again, two completely different temporal environments. Probably a filming of some commercial or era series. I have not the faintest idea where we are. Randomly Candem-London, 2014 (8,511). 3) Bridge Alexandre III, one of the best known in Paris. In the background the Eiffel Tower already built. All of this has to be with the Universal Exhibition of 1900. Paris (10,000). 4) This is Reykjavik, Iceland. I have a photo of a friend of mine in that very church, 2022 (9,596). 5) Pearl Harbor attack, maybe. Hawaii, 1941 (9,991). FINAL SCORE: 47,885 Remarks: - If anybody have pointed correctly 1) please let me know how you did it. - Never watched The Crown series 2). Very hard one for those who do not watch TV series. - Keep in mind World Exhibitions 3): Pre 20 th Century: - Paris (1889). Inauguration of Eiffel Tower. a) Paris, 1900 (already in TG). Inauguration of Palace de Orsay, Petit Palais, Grand Palais and Alexander III Bridge). b) Saint Louis 1904 (already in TG). First with electricity. “Dr. Pepper” drink and peanut butter were presented and this World Exhibition. c) Milan (1906) d) Brussels (1910). e) Gante (1913). f) Barcelona (1929). g) Paris (1937). Picasso painted “Guernika” for this World Exhibition. h) Stockholm (1949). i) Brussels (1958). The famous “Atonium” was built for this Expo. j) Montreal (1967). k) Osaka (1970). l) Vancouver (1986). m) Seville (1992) n) Lisbon (1998). o) Hannover (2000). p) Zaragoza (2008). q) Shanghai (2010) r) Milan (2015).
My worst daily ever, by a big margin as well.
I totally fell for the UK photo being in the past, instead of being a recreation of the past. Misclicked the Iceland round, but had no idea anyway.
1) In the fence of Downing Street. It does not seem to be very recent: the helmets, the clothes, no mobile phones... Maybe around 2001 (9,800). 2) It is Hungarian. If the words end in -g it is Hungarian. Looks like she is being questioned by a State agent for some kind of demonstration. Not before the Prague Spring of 1969. Budapest, 1972 (6,853). 3) I know this accurate place. It is Havana-Malecon in front of the Fortress of San Salvador. This is definitely before the 1959 Revolution, during the Batista Government. Malecon-Havana, 1955 (5,992). 4) Israel, Tel Aviv, 1982 (8,344). 5) Tar Heels have their stadium is in Chapel Hill. I spent a year very close to it, in Greensboro during my High School 12th grade (1992). My host family were fanatics of Tar Heels. No idea when they might have won a championship or something. I do not see many mobile phones. I see an iPhone 1. Chapel Hill. Tar Heels Stadium, NC, 2005 (7,499). FINAL SCORE: 38,488 Remarks: - - I had a feeling that 2) would not be Budapest... Nice spot in time, Monko. - - 1938 in Havana 3) makes sense. By 1955 the Revolution was well advanced and Batista no longer had as much support. My fault for not paying enough attention. - Do not feel guilty in 3), Monko, indeed, Puerto Rico and Cuba flag are virtually identical. - Chapel Hill is the university city of North Carolina for excellence. Everything regarding colleges is there. Michael Jordan started his career there. - Dates have killed me in virtually every round. Three 5,000 k locations and then the terrible dates in Cuba, Israel and Chapel Hill. Disaster. - Good to see you back again.
Oy, you missed a page on the leaderboard ... 😅
Sorry, realized you didn't actually ... just misinterpreted the colour of the "next page" button ... my bad
The blank space jokes were on point! I got Cuba, but confidently put it in 1959 because I thought they were celebrating the rise of Castro.
My dates were way off... but I was good on locations
Me too. A disaster in time. Oh my..
For R2, that is one of the Flame Towers in the background ... Azerbaijan is rich on natural gas: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flame_Towers
1) Despite the street sign is written in Catalonian, this is Majorca. Many of the places there start with ‘Sa’: Sa Calobra, Sa Arenal, Sa Plaça.... ("Sa" means “the” in feminine) Besides, Majorcan and Catalonian are 90% the same language. No idea of the exact place of the pic but I would say in the Tramuntana mountain range area of the island, on its largest village, Soller, Majorca, 2022. (10,000). 2) The lines of the field make me think of an American football stadium and the place looks cold. ‘-NTON’ on the hype we could be in Edmonton, Canada. In fact, I would say that those men outfits are more Canadian than American. Taking a look at the city's stadium I see that their team (The Elks) wear green and yellow. Then Elks Stadium, Edmonton, Canada, 1971 (9,944). 3) One more of the Victory Day Parade in Moscow's Red Square. The sign says something about ‘For the Victory of Communism’, 1961.
