Scoring Tries Off Line Breaks: The Lions' line break attack
Lots of teams make line breaks, but no one is as good at finishing them off as the Emirates Lions in the @UnitedRugbyChampionship this season.
Here's a short video looking at some of the key factors behind their success off linebreaks. #rugbyanalysis #urcgo

'Tackling in' on Defence: A tactic to buy your team time when defending
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.8 месяцев назад
When we talk about defence, we often talk about line speed or numbers. Something not talked about as often is tackle choice - where defence starts. Here's a short clip on Munster's defence in the @URCOfficial and the idea of 'tackling in'. #MUNvBUL #URCGO #RugbyAnalysis

Rugby Analysis: Ireland's special 3-phase All Black breaking try
Просмотров 20 тыс.2 года назад
Have tried livening up the commentary a bit on this one, so let me know what you think. This try was just a surreal moment as an Irish fan having seen Ireland struggle against the All Blacks for so many years. History, an away series win in New Zealand and in style too. If you want to follow my work more regularly/support the channel, here's some links: Twitter: ek_rugby Buy me a co...
Rugby Analysis: The moment Ireland took control of the All Blacks Series/Sexton's so good.

Finally got a day off from work to put audio to a couple of videos so here's the first one - 14 versus 14, 2nd test, a breakdown of Ireland's 3rd try and the moment they took control of the series. Apparently the only country that this is blocked is New Zealand by Sky NZ. Going to put in an appeal and hopefully they recognise that this video is Fair Use. England v Ireland Analysis: What was going on in the scrums?
Просмотров 20 тыс.2 года назад
Here's a new video looking at one of the burning questions from last weekend's England v Ireland game - what was going on in the scrums? This video won't get into a referee analysis of "he cheated, no he cheated" because every team (including England and Ireland) push their luck in the scrums and I genuinely don't think it was the key difference maker in this game. Instead, this video will take...

Tech Tips: How to dominate in your rugby tackles
Просмотров 15 тыс.3 года назад
It's rare enough that you see a tackle as technically spot on as this one from Cardiff's James Botham - so I had to make a video about it! In this one, I look to break down some of the key details and decisions that lead to Botham's dominant tackle. Even if you only take one or two things from the video, hopefully it will make your tackle technique better too. Also, apologies for not uploading ...
Rugby Analysis: A very sweet strike play from Connacht vs Ulster

It's been a while! Have been focusing on writing articles on ekrugbyanalysis.com recently - and analysis GIFs on Twitter. Part of that was deciding to follow one team so that I can go into a bit more detail and, after spinning a wheel with all the URC teams on it, got Connacht. This video comes as a result of that and hopefully you enjoy it!

great analysis
Cheers, had to give the Lions credit. They were brilliant last weekend.
Would be interesting to see how this works against an actual defence :)
This is the best set piece try I’ve ever seen! Superb!!!
Great analysis!
Cheers, much appreciated!
Love that graphic - so clear and easy to see what's going on. Nice !!
Thanks, appreciate it!
For me, there's a gap to put 12 through, the defense doesn't come up evenly at all and the Quins 10 (Smith?) gets stuck on his heels; even if he makes a tackle there it's easy ground with your back row coming through for quick ball. Next best option is to get it wide to 11 and 15; the kick defence doesn't come up very quickly, meaning there aren't good kick options but there's space on the outside corner.
Brilliant analysis 🎉
Great try and analysis
Awesome analysis 👏
great analysis
very good analise!
Dark dark dark arts...only props comprehend
It wasnt a contest it was like men against children.
Nice simple breakdown Evan. You've won a sub here ✌️
Thanks for your analysis. I’ve learned a lot rugby by following you.
I know it is a small thing and in a way rugby 101, but the 'watching the hips' is so important and it strikes me that it says a lot about Canterbury/Crusaders attention to getting all the small things right, to doing the basics extremely well. I suspect it is part of the reason why the club/franchise can cope so well with injury and the ongoing hollowing out of provincial level quality, because even an otherwise modestly talented player can do a good job if they have really worked on getting a solid foundation in the basics. It is surprising how often you will see players at Super Rugby level with major deficits in basics skills, including basic parts of their position. This applies especially to Australian players but you see it in NZ, too. You just won't see it too often at Canterbury/Crusaders. The Brumbies are another unit that seem to have a very strong and coherent focus on the small things. Thanks for the analysis - really enjoyed it.
Ireland - France Six nations 2023 Same thing
martial arts state that when crouched, you gotta have a foot forward to align your chest with your line of power. Lined feet = weak point just below your chest. Does this apply for the props during scrum? It certainly does in tackling
My dad says to look at their knees, it’ll make you instinctively go lower and your shoulder will hit the thigh and make a better tackle, it works well, now I eat scrumhalfs for breakfast
I’m a scrum half lol
Anyone got a simple explanation for what inside shoulder and outside shoulder are ? Cheers
The inside shoulder of an attacker or defender is the direction the ball came from originally. For example, Lolesio who makes the break would be on Slippers inside shoulder. Holloway would be on Slipper's outside shoulder.
@@ekrugbyanalysis6880 thanks very much
@@ekrugbyanalysis6880 what is negative ten at the breakdown and/or ruck?
In other words? How your taught from a young age?
First time in years one can say watching Ireland isn’t boring... and quite effective !
Hi, any chance of getting a video on Tadhg Furlong? To help reveal why he's the best tight head in the world? Including what he does that's great in open play. Would be awesome!
Ever heard about Frans Malherbe? The most dominant tighthead in the world, by a country mile.
Brilliant, any recent videos though?
Them more I watch this the more it looks staged
IRELAND IS GOOD NOW AND SO IS SEXTON
If there had not been a touch down there would have been a penalty try. The scorer was given a deliberate push in the back by a chasing Welsh player.
The Koch block makes this whole play
So tell me, what's the difference in the first example between Cian Healy and Jamie George?? Healy is forward. George is forward. So why are Ireland penalised??
I think coaches like Eddie Jones have understood and applying this type of thinking for a long time now. Heck for EJ basically every ruck is it's own micro Set-Piece.
It's that Joe Schmidt from Ireland who got that move on for the Aussies to get one past us Saffas!
Nice analysis!
Thanks!
How did you get this angle? could see it from this angle on the original game footage.
When you sign up to the Stan Sport package, they have full game replays of Australian games from this angle
High number of options seems to be the trick nowadays.
Awesome play.
Great video! Sry for my poor knowledge but how is that block not an illegal obstruction?
It's only an obstruction if the defender is in a position to make a tackle. In this case he was way too far away from the play. You risk being caught in an offside position blocking like this, but I think McReight was involved in the ruck/clean out so it's unlikely he was.
Cheers! On another day, another ref definitely could have called it as obstruction as McReight is ahead of the play. Koch is very fast for a prop too, so I would have backed him to get at least a hand on Lolesio otherwise.
Strictly speaking you're right, but in practice these kinds of blocks rarely ever get called. Only if you're really obviously hindering play they will call it but test sides actually abuse this to make their set piece moves etc. work.
Great snippet of analysis 👍
Cheers, appreciate it!
I saw Scott’s college run this exact move in one of their highlights videos in 2014… it’s so sexy when it works
this reminds me of a leinster defense strategy with Leo Cullen where the defender (usually a center) closed the space up and the second and third row went to his back to fill the gap... if you can make moves with inside balls a pivot and 2 options outside you can really exploit these ways to defend
A huge amount of pro teams run this defensive system now, Leinster included. In Leinster's case, they've even ran Australia's move quite a bit in the past! Think inside pass are more dangerous than ever right now around the edge of the ruck because of this way that teams defend.
And the ref runs a blocking line
A thing of beauty!
Im a fan of well constructed moves that opens up space to run the ball, but not when fowards run infront defenders to upset or blind defenders and shield the ball carrier. This must be banned. It should not be legal.
Great breakdown. I think we are ready for the World Cup a year early..
Ireland will probably bottle it at the world cup, as usual.
Yay, 100th comment!
Really enjoyed your analysis
The day sexton retires will be tragic
I don't know any other 10 that orchestrates the players around him like Sexton. He really is a sort of player/coach/tactician all in one. What the hell are we going to do without him 😭
Hammer your next 10 on the head as much as sexton has been works every time look at biggar and pollard
Lot of Irish indiscretions missed too.
An Englishman ,so glad support a great Irish side!!👏👏👏👏 what a great rugby bunch of lads
