My ever-evolving journey of living on the road in Australia in a converted panel van called Billie!
My most boring video yet… van life in the rain
Please join me this week as I spend a couple of days in the rain…
Van life isn't always sunshine and big adventures-sometimes it's slow... and soggy. In this video, I share a quiet day on the road as I navigate van life in wet weather. With the sound of rain tapping on the roof, I tackle the rather mundane realities of this lifestyle, from waiting out the drizzle to the small victory of finding a much-needed hot (free!) shower.
WARNING: this video is boring! The rain makes me stir crazy.. but I also kind of love it. Oh! And we also momentarily cross the border between New South Wales and Victoria - so that was pretty cool!

Crocodiles, coffee and camping at the cinema! | Van Life in Far North Queensland

This week I reflect on our time in the Atherton Tablelands located in Far North Queensland, Australia. These few days were filled with fresh water swimming (alongside an alleged fresh water croc!) at Lake Eacham, visits to the Skybury Coffee plantation to see and taste some Australian grown coffee, and a night spent at the Mareeba Drive In Theatre where we watched a double feature for $14 each!...

That was some beautiful waterfalls. You guys are great to watch.
I loved watching this. I came here a few years ago and I absolutely loved it here. So great reliving the highlights.
No vanlife video is ever boring! Back in 2022 (wettest winter in qld ever!) I was sleeping in a swag on the back of my ute while managing a macadamia pruning crew for 6 months. It was insane! I'm in a micro camper now. Bad weather always makes you appreciate the good weather. Loving your vlogs btw 😊
You’re totally right 😉 even the wet weather brings a bit of fun. Six months managing on a macadamia farm sounds sensational! What an experience I’m sure! Major props for doing it through that very wet year… I’d love to find a bit of work like that at some point while on the road! Thanks for watching ❤️
A large awning might be good, and would increase your living space. Maybe allow you to sit and cook outside even if it’s raining ⛈️
I think it might be time! Thankfully we have had very few rainy days on the road, but I would equally appreciate an awning for all those crazy hot days 🥵
Heyo guys. We've been using the showers at local pools along the way and if you tell them you're just after a shower, not a swim, it's only about $2! Chump change 😊 The ones you found looked elite though!
Awesome tip! Thank you 🙏 We’ll definitely keep that in our back pocket (with our spare change)!
Ah yes, realistic van life! Highs and lows, excitement and boredom are what life is all about. I love this. 👍 Edit: at least the channel didn’t need a rename either… 🤣
Thank you! There’s a lot of fun in the morning days too - it’s just a unique kind of fun 😂 Plus I personally enjoyed all of Rohan’s comedic anecdotes in this one too much not to share 😉
Sometimes, it’s so easy to forget how big the world is!
@@DrifterVans Too true! This moments really drive that home (no pun intended 😉)!
How is your fringe always so perfect
😂 Only on days I get to take a shower x
mmmmmmmmmm num num num num nothing like fresh veggies!!!! Good on ya for pushing through even though you were feeling bad. So happy you are doing good now. Another great adventure!! Thanks for taking me along ❤ You both stay safe!!
Thanks again for watching!! The poke bowl really was delicious and feeling so much better now! All the best! ❤️✨
Love your videos Jessi! If you’re ever back in Canberra, I highly recommend the Square Rock bush walk. Especially nice to walk in winter, as it often gets snow and looks absolutely stunning. 😊
Thanks Rach! Hope you and your beautiful family are well ❤️ I’ll keep that walk on my to do list - it sounds spectacular! X
Great video and tha meals look delicious..👍👍👍🇦🇺
Thanks! It was a solid dish and keen to make it again 😊✨
Yes you did well with your poke bowl, and how good is cooking on cast iron skillet with gas 👌
Thank you! Cast iron on gas is actually the best 🤤 Magically makes everything that little bit tastier!
My 2024 intention is to finish my mwb sprinter and do full time van life… we live in such a beautiful country … and I truly want to see it ! Can’t wait to start my RUclips channel too ! 🎉❤
YES! 🙌 I am so excited for you! Can’t wait to hear all about how this journey goes! X
Sorry about all the questions… I have been away for a bit and so excited to watch your vlogs. I love these meal vlogs. Also may I ask how you find have the sofa/bed ? I have the same van I’m converting and confused as to if I should have a fixed or sofa…. If you could redesign anything in your van would you change the bed ? Thanks for your advice xx can’t wait to hit the road and do au too in about 10 weeks 😊❤❤xx
I’m so excited to hear you’ve got a van!!! That’s incredible and there will be so many wonderful things coming your way I’m sure! Maybe I’ll see you out there! I’ll admit I was dubious of the decision we made on the bed at first but now I personally love have a convertible bed for the size van that we have (mid wheel base). It means that have both a full size bed and a full size living space for the price of one! It also helps me mentally I think by having a “working day setup” and a “sleepy night setup” if that makes sense. It takes us maybe 2mins to convert in the morning, but does mean we need to reserve storage space for our bedding… and it doesn’t get converted on extra lazy days 😅 The only downside is our tabletop itself is quite heave so I find it tricky to lift without Rohan’s help! The only thing I really wish I could redesign is to be able to walk between the back of the van and the drivers seat. We closed that off completely to have more bench space, but I think access would have been more valuable 🤔 next time! ❤️x
@ that’s what I think too Jess, I like the idea of putting away all my beautiful linen every morning to enjoy my day and then make the bed fresh in the evening. Only thing I’m struggling with too is I want an Emma mattress 🤭 … maybe I will do the happy Jack bed lift (I think that’s what it’s called 🫣)
Oooo a happijack/lift bed! Now that would be the dream! 💭
Oh my goodness ❤ that meal looks BEAUTIFUL
Phew! So not too much of a mess like I thought 😅 The main thing is that it was also absolutely delicious 😊
hi, do you have a name for your van?
Her name is Billie! As in pop the billy on the campfire for a cuppa, only with an -ie because she’s clearly a girl in my eyes 😅
Hello lovely people xx need to catch up on all your vlogs ❤
It’s wonderful to hear from you Rach ❤️ Hope all is well xx
My 2025 direction is systems, not goals. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
That sounds like a great way to approach the year! I certainly could do with a bit more focus on the process over the end result ✨ Thanks for watching and wishing you a wonderful 2025
Inner Peace, Harmony & Health
@@alitor2154 I love it! Thank you for sharing ✨ Happy new year!
I’m with Rohan on this, and even though I’m probably double your age and seen so many new years it has never been a big thing for me. I can only think of one notable one, Hong Kong 1989-90 as a 19 year old. If it wasn’t for the location combined with a new decade it wouldn’t have been a big deal to me. And I slept through 1999-2000 back here in Tassie due to a severe case of chronic apathy… Despite my own lack of enthusiasm for new years, I wish you two a fantastic 2025! And I hope you thoroughly enjoy your upcoming Tassie adventure!
Absolutely! I think this is the first year in many that we have actually stayed up til midnight ourselves. It truly is just another day 😉 However, a NYE spent in Hong Kong during your youth, bringing in the new decade, would have been fabulous! Thank you for watching along with our chronicles over the past year! It’s been great to connect and I do wish you a happy 2025 ✨
You guys are awesome 👍 and are a very relaxing watch. Good luck on all your journeys Bring it on .
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching along. Wishing you a very happy 2025! ✨
I’m so proud of both of you! ❤️ You make the most perfect couple, you really bring out the best in each other & support each other. I love that you haven’t killed each other yet! That is true love. ❤❤❤ Thank you for sharing your musings with us. What you have done is incredibly scary but being brave isn’t about NOT feeling fear, it’s about feeling the fear & doing it anyway. How else can we ever learn to grow? Also thanks for being so candid about your therapy/phobia journey. I know how scary that must be facing your fears but it’s going to change your life! And I could be wrong but I really don’t think you would have been able to tackle it without the change you experienced last year with Van life. It’s given you the time and space and bravery for more self-exploration and I love it! Keep living the dream xx
❤ Thank you Ash. We were sorry we couldn’t catch you for the festive season this year and trade travel stories a little bit more! I think you’re right that life on the road has given us both the opportunity to face our fears and work on building a whole new mindset around them! Happy new year and hope 2025 is a bright one for you ❤
Congratulations and happy new year to the gentlest and bravest creative couple on RUclips. You really do have the loveliest vibe. Also, don't forget to remind people to suscribe.
Thank you sincerely for your kind words @@judithrussell9162 ❤️ We are touched by your support and for watching along with our little adventures last year. Wishing you all the best for the new year! ✨
Sooooo proud of you, darling daughter. Long may your adventures continue. ❤🎉❤ Love you too, Rohan!
Love you! Thank you for supporting me in this crazy little decision every step of the way ❤️✨🚐
You should be so proud… she is seems to be a very grounded, kind human being …
Fit, adventure and community! My words for 2025. Thanks Jessi and Rohan for kicking off 2025 by providing lots of inspiration. Congratulations Jessi on your brave step in sharing how you are challenging your phobia. I am sure it will lead to a life changing sliding door moment. And yes Rohan, the hat is incredibly cool!
I love that!! I want to add all of those onto my list of words too 😅 A very, VERY happy new year to you and Tracy x
Coming from someone who is deeply entrenched in the rat race, routine and busyness, it’s therapy for me to tune in to your channel every now and then for my escapism…it fills my cup ☕️ Hope for more in 2025
I am truly touched by your kind words! Thank you for being here - I always enjoy having a little chat over the videos ☺️ I hope 2025 does bring you more adventure and moments outside of this busy world.
I would love to hear your intentions for the new year and what word/three words you might use to help set the tone for 2025! ✨❤️
HNY Jessi 🎉✨
Happy new year! ✨
My mother's home town Pally
You're kidding, that's amazing! It's lovely to connect with someone who also has roots in this small town :)
Happy New Year - wonderful video! Australian small town have a lot to offer van dwellers for sure!
Happy New Year to you too! Wishing you one with lots of joy. Small towns are the place to be when living on the road - always full of friendly faces and hospitality!
Outback Qld is well worth the drive, but in winter, not summer. We only visit that part of Australia in July- Aug. Great video.
I agree! I didn't quite feel we could make the most of all there was to see out there because of the summer heat, so next time I'll make sure to time it right. Thanks for watching!
How great that you have both visited the small towns of your great grandparents. Rohan also had two great grandfathers that ran a general store. One in Nelia (near Julia Creek) and the Fleming store in Mildura right next to the bridge over the Murray River.
Maybe it’s fate telling us to open our own general store 🤔… Mildura is also on our radar for some family history sleuthing!
What a nice place to revisit. Thanks for taking us along. Have a happy new year!! ❤
It was a special little moment ❤️ Hope you’ve had a wonderful festive season and all the best for bringing in the new year!
Take care and have a happy new year you two 🇦🇺🎄🎉💐🎊✌️❤️
Thank you @@Freewheeling6060 !! Wishing you a wonderful festive season and very happy new year! ✨🎉💘
Did you visit any hot springs Jessi?
We didn’t this time unfortunately (it was far too hot to feel enticed by the hot springs 🥵) but I did visit when I was younger to the ones in Moree!
Brilliant! Keep up the adventures but take care……. Love the dialogue and Rohan’s comedy relief😅
Thank you for torturing yourselves for us! That place looks spectacular, I’m going to have to go there next time I’m up that far on the big island. And Rohan, mate, please be more careful with your levels, take your bloody glucose pen on walks like that! And Jessi, make sure he does! Now I feel like I’m talking to my kids… 🤣
Thanks for (virtually) coming along with us for this walk! Although moderately challenging, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. We have learnt from our mistakes and now over prepare on the high carb snack front! We’ve even got two glucose pens now so we’re both responsible in making sure they’re packed! We’ve now successfully completed an even longer hike with far less stress… Thank you for looking out for us 😅
It was great to relive this amazing walk. It still ranks as my favourite Australian one day walk.
Shout out to you and Tracy telepathically motivating us from afar 😅 This walk counts as a real highlight of our big lap so far!
Wow! Gorgeous gorges, you did well.
Very, very gorgeous gorges! Killer day, but so glad we did it! Thanks ☺️
Holy Moly Macaroni and Cheese!!!! I think this is my favorite place you guys journeyed to thus far. I was ready for a dinosaur to appear. I bet it would be really creepy at night. Thanks for taking me along on your journey!! ❤❤ Cya next time. Be safe and have a Merry Christmas!!
Thank you!! It was magical and really did feel quite prehistoric. Lots of untouched, natural beauty… and maybe a little creepy at night 😅 Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and happy festive season ❤️✨
Great footage. There are some good tracks nearby on the Gold Coast hinterland walking through Gondwana rainforest.
Ooooo yes of course!! I’ve seen photos of that area and it looks spectacular! Thanks for the recommendation ✨
Warrior’s..😉.. Great Adventure 👍👍👍🇦🇺
🥰 thank you! It was such a fabulous day!
I was there 2 years ago and only had time for the car park walk as it was out of season and I would love to get back and do the whole walk I would love it too!!!❤
I couldn’t recommend it enough! I heard the walk near the car park is also very pretty but we didn’t get a chance to check that one out. I hope you manage to return - its well worth it ✨🌿
Any other ‘great walks’ I should add to my list, please let me know!
Barcaldine (Bah - kawl - dun). Your cheeks went quite red in Winton 🥵😂💪
I knew I wasn’t getting it quite right! Thanks! And I was feeling rather overheated 😂 laughing at myself watching that footage back hehe
@@jessiwanderingfamous as the birth place of the Australian Labor Party.
At least you guys have the Ozzie salute 🫡 down pat..🤣.. Great video as always.👍👍👍🇦🇺
🫡 All day everyday! I think we need some head nets for any future walks through the outback 😅
Definitely living tha Dream, Much better than tha city life..👍👍👍🇦🇺
I certainly think so! Considered going into Melbourne today and then thought, hang on a second, why would I do that when I’m already in a beachside summer paradise!
That Hughenden sky just went on forever. I hope you have been checking out the incredible night sky on moonless nights. Now to Rohan….how could you hear about your mums sheep station for the past 30 years and then refer to it as being cattle. I think I also heard the word “farm” which would cause your grandfather Murray Halloran to haunt you. I will leave the lesson on how to pronounce Narollah for another time 😂.
The sky was so vast that the horizon kept playing tricks on me while driving! We had a full moon while there so unfortunately not quite as much star gazing… but the moon was incredible. I have just learnt that apparently Rohan thought sheep (and all livestock) were referred to as “cattle”…. I think perhaps a future tending to a property in the country is not on the cards after all… 🤭
@ that’s hilarious. Rohan is more of a city kid than I thought.
