I make videos to help adult Irish fiddlers master the feel of Irish traditional music and work your way to finding your own unique "lilt" within the tradition. If you're coming from outside the tradition and wondering how to best fit in -- it's all here!
As both an American and a classically trained musician, I didn't grow up immersed in the Irish trad scene. Despite this, I've been able to develop an Irish fiddle style that I'm proud of and feels authentic to me -- and I'm here to help you do the same!
I spent a year living in Cork City, where I received my MA in Ethnomusicology and spent countless hours joining in sessions. Now I'm based in mid-Michigan and enjoy connecting with folks all over the world with a fellow passion for this music!
If you want to work with me further, I suggest:

Classical violinist: More bow, Faster speed and more stable. Irish fiddler Lesa bow more tonal control
Fiddle is my fifth instrument and I have unorthodox ways of learning instruments but I highly agree about listening and learning through osmosis.
But learning an already written piece kinda puts all that into place. I will get there writing my own songs, eventually. But yes it's much easier when there's a particular thing to practice. I'm also a drummer but that doesn't mean i can bow with right hand like that without watching someone do it. I think a lot of it is paying a teacher to stand over you and adjust you. That's a pain. Takes the fun out of it.
Great playing with many fine variations Even Michael Coleman would be proud
It's not every day you hear that! Many thanks, Gabriel!
thanks for sharing Hannah
THANK YOU!!!! I’ve only been playing 9 months and the nuance escapes (the fk) outta me.
You're very welcome!! It's a subtle thing, but once you've got it you've got it!
@ - I hope I get it, thanks for the video(s).
Lovely! 🤩
Glad you enjoyed, Joel! Looking forward to our collab :D
@ yeah! That will be loads of fun 🤩
Hi Hannah! Would you be willing to share a transcription of your Irish-flavored Christmas tunes?
Hi Hannah, I tried the scale roll exercise tonight, and I think it's really going to help me get a better feel for playing a roll. Thank you for this video!😊
Hooray!! That's amazing, I'm so glad you found the scale roll exercise helpful! You can definitely use this for other ornaments and bow patterns as well if it's a good method for you!
I got into Fiddling with a classical violin teacher then trying to be a good apprentice switching to Baroque/Classical and that hat didn’t quite fit. I’ve been around Irish music all my Life and Couldn’t stop searching for Ireland in my sounds. Ireland really is in the soul
It’s interesting when you have the right bowing feel and a good texture that can be deemed an inappropriately dirty violin bowing technique…How many times as an Irish Fiddle player when performing the bowing kind of does it’s own thing and you tend to let the bow run more, especially found in WestClare fiddle style. Perhaps to most Violinist Irish fiddlers are just wrong. What a shame, I adore being an Irish Fiddler
Hi, Hannah! I would like to know the name of the reel you're playing when you demonstrate the two fiddles. Thanks!
Is that around 4 mins in the video? If so, the reel is Paddy Fahy’s (most of his tunes are self-titled but this one’s one of the more well -known so should be fairly easy to find). Martin Hayes has a great version!
Yes, that's the one. Thank you!😊
You sound great!
Perfect
You make a beautiful sound Hannah. For me I’m thinking if your camera was position left and slightly above your fingerboard I could focus on your finger movement in slow mode and fast. I myself try to get that roll Irish sound but it just sounds like a turn. Ie not as pretty and Irish sounding as yours. Thank you for posting. Do continue playing your fiddle, it’s very uplifting. 😊
Thank you so much!! And great feedback on the camera angle as well -- I'm hoping to get back into more video tutorial posting soon, so would be happy to experiment with the dual camera position.
Thank u, really clear
Love it. Doing them with a flute now.
Sweet!! Glad that this translates over to flute too 🥳
is it not The Belles of Tipperary ?
Great tips and explanation.
@@pauloconnor6331 Thank you, Paul! So glad to hear that.
Always helpful thank you !
My biggest influence is Sharon Corr, The fact that Irish Fiddle is still adapting and growing it’s living absolutely. I take things from Baroque music and classical ideas too which led me to hear Cape Breton fiddle and other versions of popular Irish tunes, Bow hold too…I prefer a more connected sound when I play, bigger bow movement….as always listening is key lots to discover and hold dear
Tilting the Bow is good however; when you go on the A and the E string if the tilt doesn't decrease you will scratch or make unwanted overtone
Thanks so much for this video. Can't wait to try this tomorrow morning (it's late and my neighbours are already mad at me🤣) As a learner I have been having a bit of a bow shake problem and I have a feeling this will help. x
Lol!! I can totally relate to wanting to keep the neighbors happy. How did it go the following morning?
@@HannahHarrisCeol It went well! It definitely helps to minimise the shakiness and also sort of frees up my wrist. Thankyou so much. PS. The neighbours are now having a cellar conversion done with constant banging all day. This is great as I now feel I can make a racket whenever I like!🤪
@@walneylass hahah brilliant! And so glad to hear your wrist feels more free with this bow hold -- I've definitely found the same.
Hi Hannah, great tutorials, where would I find more rhythm exercises just like the 2 you did here. Thank you
Thank you so much, John! I've got a full module of rhythm exercises in my Find Your Lilt course over on my studio site (learn.hannahharrisceol.com) and I think I may have a couple more in the Free Fiddle Tip Vault there as well. Glad you're enjoying these!
This is amazing!
Hannah - thank you so much. This has been a great help to me in learning to play jigs on the low D whistle. The best explanation and teaching out there. Thanks again - appreciated.
Ohh I love hearing that this was translatable to the low D whistle as well, and glad you found the explanation helpful! You are most welcome - cheers!
Go cinnte ba mhatih an album seo! I want this album!
The classical bow hold can produce ‘shaker bow’ whilst performing which is not ideal. Máiread ní mhaoinaigh of Altan & So many Cape Brenton fiddle seem to as well. I think the shorter and quicker fiddle Bowing the longer the distance between the bow/ string contact point to bow hold point will provide shaker bow on fast tunes easily. We are not classical players and I think there might need to be a fiddler acceptance group hahaha our technical bag is very different
gracias, saludos desde colombia
Please back to youtube and continue
When I play with the classical bow hold to play fast requires less motion of the bow always this does 2 things. 1) differentiate long and short nites 2) provides a feeling of the sound from the bow moving faster than the bow speed illusion
Nicely done never heard Johnny Cope as a Hornpipe, sweet version, and I'm certain he is still not walking yet.
It's also a common Donnegal style hold
You know, that’s probably where I first picked it up is learning from a couple of Donegal fiddlers at the Blas summer school! Great point!
@@HannahHarrisCeol mairéad ní mhaoinaigh from Altan/Clannad uses it most famously a Donnegal girl. Whose father wrote what The Corrs coined as Louth Erin Shore
It also has to do with the balance point of the bow it the balance point requires you to hold it more like a classical player because of the weight distribution then there is no choice. So an excuse to to bow shopping :)
I love fiddle with no backing tracks…when I play live I don’t use one. This tunes sound so good
Thank you! I play mandolin, but the same principles seem to apply.
May i ask were is your thumb i cant see it
Pronounced ' Brendan Branach!'
Thanks! Older self’s figured that out by now 😊
Count as Gaeilge helps alot the beat values differ slightly in favour of bow emphais I find
:(1) 2 3 (1) 2 3:
I learned the difference between a violin and a fiddle is: Attitude. Also: the violin has strings, and a fiddle has strangs.
I’m an adult beginner and Ive tried this after seeing folks holding it that way at the sessions, I love it! A question, from your experience, will there be any gotchas in terms of technique down the line in terms of all the Irish dance rhythms and ornamentation?
Hi Leo! So glad to hear that you're loving this bow hold! I'd say the bow hold itself was definitely a gotcha moment for rhythm, but another would be using less bow overall (specifically for fast tunes). There are a bunch of mnemonic devices for keeping track of the different rhythms too (I talk about a few in this email: hannah-harris-ceol.ck.page/posts/this-week-s-fiddle-tip-may-make-you-hungry).
Thx a mill, Hannah. Lots there to let soak. I searched online for Liz D & Matt C without success. Might that interview be somewhere online for listening to? Cheers!
You are most welcome!! The interview is over on Liz Doherty's site iteachtrad.com/ -- I believe you'll find it in the blog section!
Incredible! BTW, music starts a 1:36.
... make that 1:15
You’re an excellent instructor Hannah! Your classical background really shines in how you explain technique. I really hope to see more tutorials on playing Celtic fiddle soon!
Thank you so much, Jan!! While I’ve taken a bit of a break from RUclips tutorials for the time being, I do have lots more tutorials (a mix of free and paid) over on my website learn.hannahharrisceol.com if we’re not already connected over there! :)
It sounds like when a player is trying to sound Irish. Listen and listen more.
I’m Baroque trained and it’s made it’s influence on my Irish bowing the 2 styles connect somehow
That's great, Brigid! Do you use the shorter Baroque bow for your fiddling?
@@HannahHarrisCeol no just now swells and no vibrato higher now hold and no glissando
Oh yes... always the 4 parts! 😆The more the merrier, and I love that 3rd one too. Thanks for the tips!
Yay!! Glad you agree on the 4 parter (and yes, the 3rd is such a blast)! You are most welcome!
I love Peeling Potatoes !! Is there sheet music available for it?
Thank you, Luis!! I haven't written out the sheet music for this tune yet, but one of these days I should get it up on thesession.org :)
Incredibly clean and funky playing
Haha I'll take it! Thank you so much, Peter! :)
