Southern Homesteading Outdoors and Prepping

We are just a small family who moved to a more rural environment. We maintain the connection to modern society, but we are interested in learning how to be more self sufficient by exploring the methods used from generations that were more self reliant through homesteading and farming. Very thankful to so many that post their own "how to" videos.

Finally, A Successful Honey Bee Transfer!
This is my third time catching a swarm of bees. I'm starting to learn a few things about what to do, and what not to do, but I'm still a new-BEE. But, this time when I transfer them to the big box, they finally stayed and they are building new comb. It appears they are thriving.

Self Sustainable Living. Permaculture and Homesteading, It Takes Years
Просмотров 83Месяц назад
No one ever starts the journey to self sustainability with all the knowledge they need. It is a journey of trial and error. We have been on this property close to seven years and we are just really getting to the point where we are getting ahead of the game. It takes a lot of effort, time, money, and endurance. Don't let any of those channels that make it appear easy fool you. Homesteading, per...
Planting and Digging Potatoes From the Same Seed Potatoes
Просмотров 17Месяц назад
Potatoes are such a vital crop if you are trying to sustain a food crop from year to year. The biggest problem is keeping the seed stock from year to year. Usually, carrying over seeds for any crop isn't a big deal since storing seeds doesn't take up much room for most crops, but for potatoes, it can be an issue. This is my method of sustaining potatoes from year to year.

We have been dealing with a lot lately and the death of my daughters horse has put us all in a difficult place. It's difficult to try and pick up the pieces when so much of your world revolves around something, and then suddenly, it's no longer there.

The Results of My First Time Back Fishing in Years

Me and my wife's dad went fishing in Hopedale Louisiana. I hadn't been fishing there in years. We stated out at the front of the rock dam, (one white trout), then to my secret spot, (two speckled trout and one Redfish), then to the back of the rock dam (zero), a long bump trip to the long rocks only to not fish because of too much fog, and on the way in at a old well head, we hit a bunch of she...

Hey man, just stopping by to say I hope you're well.
@@Valorius I started a new job and I'm supposed to be working 7 on 7 off but I'm on my 14th day on. I thought with the new job I was going to get some time off but someone caught the big C virus and I am filling in. I keep thinking to go visit your channel and catch up on videos but this place doesn't afford me the opportunity to watch videos like the other place did. Anyway, thanks for checking on me. I will get around after I get better situated in my new position.
Ya know what the best day in the life of a cheap Chinese chainsaw-owner is? The day he throws the saw out! (And then goes and buys a real saw). After my experience with a $129 "Homdox" saw, I was then happy to go out and spend $400 on an Echo CS-590 Timberwolf (Love that saw!). These Chinese chainsaws are to saws what Ryobi is to power tools...they'll somewhat get the job done...but they're no fun to use; feel cheap and cheesy; make the job take 3 times as long, and require constant tinkering/repairing/finessing. When ya get sick of that, you go and buy real tools, and then kick yourself for not doing it sooner- and for the money you wasted on the junk tools.
@@bobbylibertini I had 5 of them. Four are still kicking. I paid less than 400 for all of them. The one that isn't running anymore is because they are poorly made. The plastic gas tank cracked but that is because when I went to put it down, it hit a stump too hard and the gas tank cracked. It should have definitely been able to handle that. The other 4, well, they work and I have gotten my money's worth out of them for sure. We haven't had the need to clear too much lately so I haven't used them in a while. About the only thing I use them for is a random tree across the road and the random dead tree on the property. Definitely not something for a hard core woodsman.
@@TheSHOP411 Yeah, my Chinky chainsaw still runs and works too- but it's just not something I want to use, as it just causes me to waste too much time (always have to fuss with something or another on it)- They actually refunded my money in full for it, and let me keep the saw...I just keep it around in case I can think of another use for the engine (The engines are the one good thing about these saws- they got that down! Trouble is, the rest of the saw is so cheaply made...I mean you can ffel the handle flexing in your hand... I'm by no means a hardcore user either- just use a saw occasionally to cut up fallen trees, or on rare occasions to cut one down- but I'd just rather spend two or three times the price and have a good saw)
😂I love it! Thankyou
I got a used tool only For $75 and then grabbed the weed eater that comes with a battery so I got a trimmer mower battery and charger for $235
@@jointglobalceo that's a killer deal. I was looking at them on Father's Day and just the mower, battery, and the cheap charger were $400. They got really proud of those things fast. I look on marketplace from time to time and they often have a deal or two. Mine is still going strong after the modifications I made but I see a lot of people have issues with all the safety stops that Ryobi has. Thanks for watching
@@TheSHOP411what kind of mods did you make?
@@jointglobalceo look at the very end of the video. The bracket that allows the handle the retract broke. When that happened the actuator switch wouldn't allow the motor to run. It's one of those safety mechanisms they install so we don't cut our own hands off. Well, I welded the push handle all the way extended and put the wires so that it would always sense that they were full extend. That way, it's always ready to go. Definitely buy the aftermarket batteries. They are much cheaper.
Good job brother. Do you get stung much handling these guys?
It is very rare. Those bees know it's a death sentence to sting, so even when I am destroying their home, I hardly ever get stung. You also get a feel when they are getting to that point of no return, so that is when I back off. They are amazing to watch and to think of how much we get from them, it's pretty amazing. Think about it. They work all year building up honey for their hive and we come along, wipe it out, and they just keep on making it. That is why most bee keepers are very conscientious about how much honey they take from a hive. Take too much, you will doom the hive.
@@TheSHOP411 they are a bunch of little communists. I cannot say that I am a fan
Now, now. I think I'm detecting a bit of misogyny here. Possibly a little TDS. What's your beef with a community made up of almost entirely females, who worship and are led by a queen, and the only time men are needed is for propagation of the species. Hmmm, now that you bring it to my attention, they are not communist, BEES ARE DEMOCRATS.
@@TheSHOP411 LOL!
Congratulations. hard work pays off.
Thank you. It's strange . You think it would be easier, but bees are hard to raise.

I hate to say it but I was relieved when I heard it was the horse. You and I have talked about our love for our daughters many times, My heart was sinking thinking something had happened to your daughter. Thank God that is not the case.
I didn't want it to sound that way. My sister lost her son while he was serving in the Marines and NOTHING could come close to that, but this was my daughter's life and everything she did in life revolved around him. It is still hurting and she is still trying to deal with it every day.
Don't buy one. They don't run on propane
Mine are still purring along on gas and propane. I did have some issues but once resolved, they are pretty good. Oh, the battery on the new one failed after a year so I manually start it. That kinda was a bummer.
They replaced my 1st one and it's no different
@@ThunderChicken1 that does suck. I did RUclips searches and was able to resolve my issues. I hope you can. Nothing worse than buying something and it doesn't work
I talked to Duramax today. They said it won't run on anything smaller than a 40lb tank. I don't understand that. But
@@ThunderChicken1 that's not true. We ran three different generators on the small tanks for two weeks.
Send me some oranges brother! :D Checking in to see how you've been, haven't heard from you in a while. How's your daughter like college? Anything new going on?

I hate that they got so damaged ,
Every winter storm is different. This one this year was particularly brutal to the trees, but even so, citrus trees can survive. This year should be pretty good, and if next winter gives us a break, we will have a stellar crop.
Hey friend, I just planted some old red potatoes for the first time. Fingers crossed they sprout! 😀
Hello. I'm sure you will do just fine. Potatoes are generally easy. Every now and then something can go wrong, but the most often do well. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great catch brother
Fun and delicious
Belo vídeo muito bom tempo feliz Estamos juntos ❤❤❤10
Thank you so much for sharing brother 😊
Happy to do it.
wow thats a huge one , was it delicious?
It was, and still is. We were able to put away 6 full quart size Ziploc bags of fish. I used to keep us stocked with a plethora of seafood when I would go regularly. I'm getting back to it now that my daughter is older, so we will be stocked back up soon. I really can't wait to get my crabbing operation back underway. We love our seafood here.
they are so beautiful
We enjoy watching them. Every year they get more tame. We have a couple that stay close all the time
Great catch 🤩🤩
It sure was fun to get back out there and have some great fish for meals. Thanks for coming by.
I have never been a big fisherman. The moment I get that hook in the water I'm ready for a nap LOL
I live to hunt and fish. I took a bunch of years off to raise my daughter, but I was able to get a few trips in with her. She loves to fish as well. I had her hunting but my wife put her in ballet and that screwed up the hunting times. Anyway, I'm getting back into both big time. That salt air and smell of the sea is like a drug to me. I could live on the sea.
I just saw a big beautiful Fox cross my street half an hour ago gotta love nature man. I hope you've been well brother.
I really like the foxes up on our other land, but on the homestead, they cause too many problems with the chickens. I had one casing the coop two nights ago. They are smart. Definitely own the Sly as a fox slogan
They're like feed me Seymour feed me soon
By the way, I love that part in Little Shop of Horror's when the plant sings Feed me Seymour.

aweome to fix it yourself
It certainly is nice to be able to handle these unexpected break downs. Used to be, I would be dead in the water but now I can do these repairs myself. I'm getting ready to tackle a repair on my boat hull and welding aluminum takes a bit more effort so I hope I have taught myself enough to get it done. I feel confident I can. Thanks for coming by. I need to go catch up on y'all's channel. Been really busy lately.
Wow those are some real beauties!

@@TheSHOP411 Happy times :D Hope you've been well my friend.
I can braze, but that's about it.
I have brazing rods but I haven't used them. I am ok with the spool gun and the liner whip, but I tried tig and that is hard. When things slow down, I'm going to get back to practicing. I have already done a little on my boat and it came out pretty good.
@@TheSHOP411 I've always used coat hangers to braze, lol.
@@Valorius sounds like a good April fools video.
@@TheSHOP411 I'm serious it actually works. LOL. I've brazed about a 100 exhausts and mufflers with coat hangers back when I used to be a mechanic in a previous lifetime.
@@Valorius I would not have thought it would work.
Young buck
Young and stupid. Couldn't resist that doe. There were also a 4 pt and a 6 pt chasing but this guy was a bit bigger than them. The 4 pt was actually dominating the 6, or, at least it appeared that way. Anyway, we don't see many racks around the house until this time of year so it's pretty cool to see them show themselves.
To protect your citrus trees at night you could run a sprinkler for a few hours until there is a good coating of ice at just freezing before the temperature drops even more. That is what I do with peach trees when we get the deep freezes after the fake summers in February/ March... and the peach trees have blossomed. (Of course it is all due to Geoengineering and climate engineering manipulation. I hope people are finally catching on to this.)
That is what I was eluding to when I was saying the ice will actually insulate the tree. I have had neighbors use the sprinklers to do exactly what you say and with citrus, I have seen mixed results. It seems sometimes it works, and sometimes, it actually hurts. I think if I would have done it this time, it might have helped. In my opinion, it's a roll of the dice to ice them. Haha. Thanks for the comment. People should definitely understand what you are saying because it might save trees in some freezes. I may have to do an experiment and ice one tree next time to see the difference.
I think you mean climate change caused by burning fossil fuels and methane release. It’s not a controlled thing, it’s a crapshoot.
But....but.... global warming!
Stay frosty my friend.
It's hard to respond to those things CNn, MSNBC, and MSM perpetuate
Frisky boys
Deer season ended and the rut just got going. Oh well.
Poor packaging is not always the merchants fault, but many times the shippers. They tend to rough handle packages at times. Anyhow good presentation :o)
Very, very true. I highly doubt it started out like this from the manufacturer. The forklift driver told me that several had been returned just that day due to damage and the inability to start them. Mine is doing well right now but I think it needs a new battery. I have to pull start it to run.
How did your Orange Trees do this past few weeks when the Temps here in Pearl River County got into the mid Teens on a few mornings? I have a 2 year old i put Halogen Lights all around it for the night and it now has a good bit of curled Leaves, I just hope i didn't loose it.
Many of the leaves on all my citrus trees are in the process of falling off because of the freeze but from past experiences, I am optimistic that they will put out new leaves and likely bloom in late February or mid March. If we get another March freeze like last year, it will really hurt, but for now, I am optimistic. I will do an update in a few weeks when it becomes clear whether they made it, or not.
Thanks for the Reply , very informative video also. Gave me some Ideas. @@TheSHOP411
My pleasure. I just stopped and bought an Owari satsuma and another Hamlin Orange. Now, I am going to start another small citrus orchard.
Good eatin' right there!
I have a venison sauce picante recipe that is killer. Backsrap is good for dang near anything and we eat it up. Deer meat really makes up a large part of the meat in our diet all year.
Mutha Load! Lol. Identifying edible outdoor plants like mushrooms is definitely something I should work on.
I remember my dad taking me squirrel hunting in the swamps and one day he just starts filling up my vest with mushrooms. It was like he struck gold. When we got home, mom fried some up and I understood. Oyster mushrooms are the easiest wild mushroom to identify. If it's growing on dead trees, or even deadish wood on a tree that's still kinda alive, and it's a soft shelf mushroom, it's good to go. I have a video a ways back that will help you identify them.
Great video!! Look forward to more!
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Man sharpen that knife dammit
They dull so fast. I need a set like the guys from "The Bearded Buthchers". Their stuff is like razors.

Nope, and she don't watch so I know who told if she asks me
It's settled, dinner at your place!
I certainly wish I could cook a dish for you brother. I was going to put up me cooking the sauce picante but one step was left out so I'm going to do it again later. We are eating quite well right now my friend.
You are making me hungry man

With the resin problem I feel like you could have saved yourself a lot of trouble if you would have used heat resistant 3M tape and some furnace cement

Any issues with this generator?Thanks
I did have one issue but I am confident it wasn't the generator itself. I believe it was a contaminated fuel problem. Since that issue, both generators have run flawlessly.
how fast will an 80lb trawling motor push your boat?
I will have to make a video to answer that. I really don't know.
I just got back from buying a battery for my system, 600 bucks! 😳
The LiFePo's are the way to go and the price point is really getting better. Let me know if you get more. I can help you get a good price for the best tech. I'm still just getting into this but I am pretty deep into this with a manufacturer.
This is a great idea! 👍
