Zulya Kamalova - Hobart 1999
Zulya Kamalova (1969-2024) was a much loved Russian-born Australian singer, whose early death from cancer in 2024 came as a great shock to her family, friends and fans. Original video and audio recording by Tony Rees. Uploaded with the approval of her partner, Andrew Tanner, January 2025.

    If I could give this video a thousand 👍 I would. Apart from being a brilliant musician, song writer and performer with wit and patter to leave your sides splitting with laughter, Vin was a warm & friendly man generous with his time willing to chat every time you met him weather after a gig or in an Indian restaurant in Cleckheaton. His popularity was shown by thousands at his funeral where Pat and her family were kind enough to open the cathedral doors to all who wanted to show their respects to the great man. Miss you everyday Vin. After watching this im off to play Shy Tot Pomny on vinyl! All the very best 🍺

    Many thanks for posting this excellent recording - I have such great memories of seeing Nic play during my time at Hull University and cannot understate what an influence he had on me. I spent years trying to reproduce his guitar style before I realised what was the point of copying when Nic did it all so wonderfully well

    • @tonyrees948
      @tonyrees948 17 дней назад

      Learning how he does some of his accompaniments is a good exercise for the brain and fingers; a few things can rub off that find their way into other things that you play as well, even though I agree, direct reproduction is not really an end in itself. Hopefully one's own style develops incorporating all sorts of different things you have picked up along the way!

    What, I missed him AGAIN? Fairport Convention came to Hobart in 1977. I told my music teacher. He convinced me it couldn't possibly be them; it must be some other band. So I didn't go. Christ, I was 13 and there was no internet, and I assumed he knew WTF he was talking about.

    Looked like the great fiddler was playing in a backwater folk club. A talent like Swarb's deserves a concert hall venue. It would be a sell out!

    • @tonyrees948
      @tonyrees948 5 месяцев назад

      Swarb had decided to tour solo at this point so was a bit more limited in what he could present, I would say. He was on a short tour in Tassie and for some reason agreed to sit in in this venue at the last minute (it was actually someone else's farewell tribute) to do a short set. Why it was scheduled in the morning, I have no idea!

    This is great! I've only listened to Willie O'Winsbury so far and I'm so happy to have had the opportunity. It's cool to hear it with a different melody, but even more importantly the lyrics provide an explicitly different slant on William's employment, to get close to the daughter!

      Thanks Jim. I first heard him on a multi-contributor album "Kicking Mule's Flat Picking Guitar Festival" where he plays a couple of tracks. Also he was with the David Bromberg Band when they came to the UK to play Cambridge Festival in 1975 (I have a poor audio recording of that, not good enough to share though). According to Discogs he played with The Spark Gap Wonder Boys, Windfall with Dave Karp, Crazy Hearts, Cimarron Creek, Lobo Rangers, The Grateful Dudes, Joyce Woodson, The David Bromberg Band and Frank Zappa! Seemed to fly under the radar mostly though although he is on a number of my Bromberg Band albums from the 70s as I recall...
