Since yesterday i have the very same configuration (SN850X with Graugear) and I can confirm absolutely all of your measurements (same Benchmarks and Temperatures). I changed from a similar sized no-vent DeLock 40Gbps M.2 enclosure - due that the DeLock was just terrible in terms of Cooling Design - hitting 50degrees outside and inside even my SN850X throttling temperatures (85degrees plus!). It is astonishing how the enclosure products differ from each other. This Graugear Enclosure is with no question a double thumbs-up and recommendation to buy.

Basically the price of an iPod back in the day ($250). Not worth it, in my opinion. If you’re gonna go old school, go old school!

Currently installing mint on 2011 . Its been hours on black screen boot up

I am currently trying to install linux mint mate on my mid 2011 mbair. Whenever i am past the point of selecting the keyboard it tells me that i need more than 8gb storage to install linux. My installation medium is 8gb. Harddisk is 120gb. But its not able to find the built in SSD. Also cannot change any settings in GNU grub at startup. Any suggestions how to make progress from here? Normally this is a 5 min job but apparently not with this mb air. In some forums i have seen that turning off secure boot and EHCI helps. But as said. Cant change anything

I did a similar work albeit with an even older late 2009 macbook. I had however to refurbish it with some new hardware such as SSD, increased RAM (8GB), new battery and even new speaker. I tried to sideload Big Sur but performances were very bad. In the end I've setttled on Xubuntu and I'm very satiSfied with the result. Planning to donate the laptop to an organization working in as third world country to make some people happy

You should really be charging and syncing an ipod with fire wire if possible as these are far faster than usb 2.0 and provide more power to the ipod Only isssue is it's a only on older macs

Is there a way to install RockBox on my old iPod classic using a Mac computer? I'm asking because I have a Mac mini with the M2 chip and the current Mac OS and I don't think I can get iTunes anymore. All I have is Apple Music.

I agree with you, the stock iPod OS for me is the way to go if one is already familiar and inside the apple ecosystem. for someone who is looking for a nice music player that does not use apple products at all, sure, rockbox could be a great options that will just bypass all of the apple stuff but then at this point might as well just buy another dedicated music player instead. i'm a big fan of apple products and ecosystem and i have had my entire music library in itunes for many years sorted and adjusted just the way i like it so iPod OS sync to itunes (now apple music) is the perfect way to get the music onto the iPod while keeping itsexactly how i like it. I hope apple keeps iPod compatibility forever

That's a great review of these Linux flavors on a 2011 laptop, taking into account the real-world considerations of the average user. One of which I am. For anyone considering this with a 2011 macbook pro or similar, I can offer the following: I have the 2011 macbook pro i5 / 8 GB RAM / 120 GB SSD. Mint (versions 19-22) with the Xfce Desktop offer about the same performance now as Mac OS X 10.6 did in 2011. Perhaps a little better. The Xfce desktop is apparently a little lighter than the one in this video. I have used only Xfce and cannot say. Also, on the same 2011 macbook pro, Debian 12.7 with LXDE desktop is comparable, though less immediately user friendly (an important point made in this video) than Mint. There is also LMDE which is Linux Mint Debian Edition. Mint is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian, so I am not sure of the precise advantages / disadvantages of choosing on over another - I am just a user, not a tech' user.

Great Video! It's harder to dissemble than the 5th Gen, but worth it. Question: When the USB-C is installed, can I use an external DAC? I´m not sure, if the USB-C-Port outputs digital audio like in moder iPhones or Android Phones. Can somebody answer this? Thanx!

If you used Ventoy you could just use one USB stick.

this would be cool if it didnt need to be glued, that defeats the purpose of how repairable these ipods are. good luck cleaning up that glue in a few gears to replace tbe battery

It’s a cool idea, but there’s a lot of oversight. I don’t know why you need to break the tab, seems like you could design it to work around the issue.

Great video, many thx! I was all in until I saw the crappy looking backplate. The iPod is all about quality and metal, not cheap plastic on the back or even such a knock off half moon. It looks like a Frankenstein iPod afterwards 😢

I bought a Satechi (that I am now returning) and I am running it with a WD_BLACK 2TB SN850X (WDS200T2X0E) on a MacBook Air - M1, 2020 with Sequoia 15.0.1 is not good as it keeps disconnecting, 🤷‍♂

My experience, running it with a WD_BLACK 2TB SN850X (WDS200T2X0E) on a MacBook Air - M1, 2020 with Sequoia 15.0.1 is not good. The drive randomly disconnects from my Mac, even when I’m not actively using it, and it’s caused file corruption several times. I’ve tried troubleshooting, but the issue persists with 2 enclosures I purchased. To me, this makes the product unusable for any reliable storage, or for working with files directly from the drive, so, I am returning it. Does anyone know of any other brand with similar speeds?

NOTE FOR iFLASH USERS, if syncing flac, you must drag your music into the music folder WHILE your iPod is still in sync mode in iPod OS. Your .flacs might corrupt over syncing with rockbox alone (for example, your song might play for 20 seconds and then skip to the next song)
