Let's bring the conversation about death out of the shadows and into the mainstream, where it belongs. Because along with birth and change, if there is one thing that will happen to us all - then death is it.

Changing the stigma about cancer: Will Wise on living life with stage 4 cancer
I am joined today by Will Wise for a World Cancer Day special of Death on the Daily. Will shares his journey from being a professional basketball player to being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. How his journey of not battling, but living with cancer has led him to advocating for cancer awareness and changing the stigma around cancer through his charity, CancerBae.
We discuss the societal perceptions of cancer, how the media and entertainment’s representations of cancer creates a narrow view, the need for open conversations, and how embracing life's challenges can lead to personal growth and a deeper understanding of what it means to live well.

If you dwell on grief you will never get anywhere in life. Nobody who ever dies wants people to constantly be grieving their loss.
Tuff topic to take on and talk about. However, very needed to remember those who have passed.
You are so right - it’s so important we talk about these things 💛

@deathonthedaily homeless with my family used to collect shoes so I like his sarcastic humor, he's keeping me here during this very dark mental and physical battle. Make sure he knows he's an amazing man and love his moral compass. Your a very lucky woman as well and best wishes to your channel..... ❤️
Thanks for diving into this subject, Tanya. While I haven't seen the documentary yet, I was very intrigued by an extended trailer that I saw the other day. Now I'm going to have to watch the whole thing. My initial thought is that "Don't Die" isn't a very healthy outlook on life. Certainly, we can all do things that can potentially extend our life-span: exercising more, eating better, drinking more water, etc. However, every human (at least so far) is mortal and has a finite time on this Earth. Depending on one's perspective, not knowing how long we have can help motivate us to do and be more, or it can instill fear and internal collapse. Just as a thought experiment, I would like to see the large group picture of all of the folks in the "Don't Die" movement (6:40) in 5 years time. How many of these people will be dead due to accidents (over 40,00 people die in car accidents in the U.S. each year), suicide, murder, and cancer? I guess I'm playing "devil's advocate" a little, but I think these folks are seeing life and death as black and white, rather than the many colors each of our lives take.
@@joeswitzer8126 agreed! It’s definitely got none of the grey area that is life. Feels like when we fight against our mortality we lose a part of what it is to be human / alive. Our wholeness comes in it all… If you watch it let me know what you think

Such a great conversation! Thank you to you and Jack for bringing POTS into the conversation. My wife was diagnosed with a milder version of POTS just a few months ago. It is very difficult to diagnose and can definitely take a long time to pinpoint. I hope that Jack can look back on this experience when he is older, even though he lost a lot of time with his illness, and see that the pain and suffering helped him to become a more grateful and empathetic person. I can already hear it in the way that he describes his current perspective, but can tell that he is still processing that loss.
I am so sorry your wife has been diagnosed with POTS and I hope her recovery journey is going well. More awareness is definitely needed as so many people go undiagnosed. And thank you for such kind comments 💛

@@jessbrady3005 thank you beautiful lady 😘💛
As always, thank you for your perspective and reflections, Tanya! I really connected with your "tattoo of grief". The past month I have been journaling and reflecting on how my own pain and suffering have really allowed me to open up to gratitude and empathy, and changed my life for the better. I read a lesser known work by Charles Dickens, called "The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain". In this story the main character suffers mental anguish daily over his past and the loss of a family member. A ghost appears to him and he is given the choice to remove all memory of his pain and suffering. I won't give away what happens, in case you want to read it. It's a pretty quick read.
Thank you so much Joe! What a powerful practice - you’re inspiring me to go deeper. And I’ve just ordered that Dickens book - had never heard of it, thank you 💛
@@deathonthedaily Oh, cool! Let me know what you think after you read the story. It led me to the question, "If I could, would I erase the memory of all of my own pain and suffering?"
@ oh wow that is a big question. What a powerful one to reflect on. How have you found that reflection? Will definitely keep you posted as soon as I’ve read it 💛
@ It has been a huge question for me to ponder, especially since I struggle with physical and mental health struggles. I have a really big, long answer that I can share with you. However, I would like to save my response until after you read the Dicken's story. 😁

Life is a different set of choices when your mortgage is paid, and the fridge is full. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to bed early because I'm picking up an extra shift that starts well before the sun rises tomorrow.
@@hinoron6528firstly, sending love your way. I hope you had a restful sleep and the extra shift goes well. Thank you for sharing, your perspective is so important in this conversation. You are absolutely right, it’s easier to talk about these choices when these needs are more secure. All of the types of rest that we thrive on as humans shouldn’t be a privilege. But unfortunately we live in a system where it has become one. It’s why I wholeheartedly believe that rest is a social justice issue. One where I believe we need fair pay, better conditions, through less hoarding of wealth at the top of corporates and individuals, plus greater social support.

As always, thank you so much for sharing your insights and perspective, Tanya. The past 5 or 6 years, as I no longer identify myself as Christian, it has been increasingly difficult for me to maintain a "buoyant and happy" persona during the holidays. I have done my best to represent and allow for the Christmas spirit to be alive for my children. We now have two teenagers and an 8 year old, so I'm having to dig deep to help her experience the magic and wonder of this time of year. I was blessed to have a wonderful childhood where my family went out of their way to make Christmastime special, so I have done my best to help pass that along. It can definitely feel exhausting sometimes, though.
I can imagine that must feel exhausting Joe. And I’m sure you’re creating beautiful memories for you all. I hope you’re able to get some time for you and doing what honours you at this time of year. For me that’s winter hibernation mode 💛
Thank you for this. I effing hate the idea of Christmas right now, I mean I kind of hate everything but I know she wouldn’t want that for me so I hope I can get there someday in way that honours her.
@@kateh42 I am sending you love, it’s so hard isn’t it. I hope you can give yourself lots of compassion and grace as you navigate this. And remember that you don’t have to have all of the answers now - in the episode linked to the short, my guest Lou shares how it took a number of years to find her new “normal” and that’s totally ok 💛
I mean christmas is a nice time cos you see yourother family who might also die and you are glad theyre not dead so you may be sad about the missing people but mostly youre just glad everyone else isnt dead yet.
