Hi, Check out our Reckless comparison between the stock Yamaha pickups on my BB734 after replacing them with Dimarzio Relentless P and J pickups. The bass was recorded via DI into an Apogee Element 46, with no effects and all of the controls set to neutral/middle. I am using Rotosound BS66 strings. Big call out to Dimarzio for a great product and fantastic service. Also a call out to Cote Guita...

Bass Play Along - Kansas Carry On My Wayward Son

Hi, Kansas turned up on my Spotify play list the other day. I'd heard it before, and their other song, Dust in the Wind, but as I started to play along to Carry On My Wayward Son, I was hooked. As one of the first Prog Rock bands, Kansas are known for songs with multiple time signatures, which this song has some great examples of. Are you still happy with this mixer? Did you have to go with something larger at a later time? It seems like it could be perfect.
How are the xvives? Any dropouts on stage? Just picked some up and would love an honest real world review!
Yeah great!! we use them on different channels obviously, but no issues with drop outs or crossing. Love em
good bass hohner headless bass.
Great video - thanks. I'm in exactly the same boat as you. I was originally using a macbook pro with Garage Band - and taking the headphone out straight into a mixer. This actually works quite well, quick and easy - but I was suffering from a number of 'freezes' - where the 12 Step would just freeze on a note mid song, or when I come to a few songs after not it not being used the buttons would light up but no sound would happen - meaning a re-start of the 12-Step. But not wanting to lug a £2k laptop about in some dodgy venues I've now got an ipad. Again using Garage Band for now. I'm in a covers band so one sound doens't fit everything - so I've set up sounds for individual songs and just change them on the ipad before starting - Ipad Garageband isn't as easy to use as the Macbook doing this in how it arranges the tracks so I'm looking to perhaps get Logic Pro - but great suggestion for Sunrizer, I'll look into it. I've also made a tray for my 'cheat-sheets' that go under the 12 Step - these are sheets of paper that tell me my chord settings for each song on the 12-step. I've also made a wooded surround for the power input socket as someone stood on it during a gig and snapped the connections off inside - the block now stops the play in the power connection. I need to do a video of my set-up 😄
Look into using BandHelper on the iPad instead of your sheets.
Is it posible to have the "front of the house" mix sent to the monitor? - I'm ajusting the front mix from my position on the stage, and need to be able to monitor til main output 1 to 1 from the monitor.
Thanks for your help
Thank you for this man this really helps me in a band where the singer needs to do Eb tuning for about half our set and E tuning for the other
Thank for this. Looking to use this system for Helix only and live gigs. Did you ever try it like that?
Thankyou. I love acoustic covers of Rock and roll. A request- anything by Alice in chains , please. Keep rocking.
Ok thanks. Maybe Nutshell or something... I'll get it done
Thank you for the quick reply. Thankyou I look forward to hearing it. Ever thought about a Velvet Revolver song?

Pretty sure their other song 'when the children cry' is for the children 😂
I keep coming back to this again and again whenever I forget how to use midi - it's a lifesaver! Must have watched it 20 times. Thanks.
Thanks!!! I know what you mean... I had to watch it again last week for the same reason :-) Glad you have found it of value.
To start, that is a very nice bass. Yamaha is the best kept secret in bass. It is odd how it distorts in passive and cleans its act up in active. Could it be the amp,s reaction to the pickup? Does the preamp compress? The org pickups sound better in passive mode but also good active. The sheehan set, while distorted and messy when passive, sound remarkable active. The grind and presence is amazing. I am considering the J set. Thank you for this straightforward and well done video. I like how you get to the point, good job.
Glad you liked it…the original pickups are definately great, but after using the dimarzio for a while, they were definately worth changing for.
I've played around with the pickup hight since the video and if I lower them it cleans up in passive mode. These pickups are "hot".. but awesome. Thanks for watching.
Had a Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V that was terrific and I couldn’t bond with it. Listed my needs and wants in hopes a Fender would cut it. Yamaha BB735A checked every box and does it for less than $1K shipped with a gig bag. In all honesty the BB735A is all any bassist would ever need. If you want a 4, you just heard the 734. It’s as fine sounding as the high dollar examples. Vid was well done and would be extremely helpful to those who are deciding which way to go. I’ve played Fender mainly for 50 years. The Yamaha replaced the expensive 5 and quickly replaced my No.1. The Yamaha BB735A is now my go to for any gig.
Thanks very much. I totally agree about the bass,, the build quality is great, playability is great and the price just can’t be beaten.
Thanks dude!
You are welcome
That was awesome
Thanks.
Jani will never get enough credit for what an amazing songwriter he was...and live his voice was always spot on.
I couldn't agree more.

Thanks!
Yep, a really useful tonal demo, for sure. Thanks for playing at a tempo and with note lengths that expose the growly characteristics of both PuPs. I swear the middle has enough bark to allow you to get enough bridge-like attack, without routing out a P-Bass, yet it is still musical and quite adaptable to the classic lower- output P- sound. What a surprise that the neck isn't muddy! I would not have guessed! Thanks!
Thanks for watching and for the feedback
Great basses. You’re wrong about the LTD2 neck attachement though : it has 4 bolts and is VERY sturdy. Just take the pickguard and the neck pickup off and you’ll see ;-)
Hi, you are correct, the other 2 are under the pickup and pickguard.... Thanks for calling this out, I always forget they are there.
Hi! What if I already use Midi In for a Midi footswitch? Is there a way to have a both, like a daisychain? Thank you very much.
Hi... Yes, you can daisy chain the midi. The trick will be around Midi Through/Out to make sure everything is connected, then you use the Channel number to determine which device you are controlling with a command.
Loved the shot at the other guitarist without the Helix. LMFAO🤣
There always has to be one non-believer in a group, right 🙂
@@therecklessempire yep! One guy has to have a live cab to irritate the house engineer.
@@SBS1890 Exactly 🙂we played recently at a small club. I was asked to go into the house bass amp/cab setup so I split between Helix to FOH and to Amp.. After sound check the engineer turned off the stage amp 🙂
I’ll spend the extra money for a Japanese made P34 through a Yamaha owned Ampeg amp!
I agree totally Jeff.... If I didn't have the Attitude I would definitely go with the P34.
fantastic, absolutely beautiful instruments.
Thanks for watching marc
Superb!!! Thank you!!
Thanks!
Wow! Awesome video. Thank you mate.
Glad you liked it!
Great in depth review. I recently picked up my 1st Yamaha bass after 52 yrs w/ Fenders. I chose the BB434 because I prefer passive and it was light at 8.0 lbs. I love everything about it, especially the neck and pups. If I do change anything I may have the frets filed down some and re-crowned, I'm used to vintage small frets, but these sure do the job so maybe not ! I have to say I think this is the best value bass your money can buy...total pro bass. It's beautiful and balances perfectly.
Hi Doug, thanks very much for the feedback. I agree, I believe that Yamaha are making the best value for money instruments out there at the moment.
Would be good to know if there’s a Helix Native version. That way you don’t even need to take the units out to the gig. Just a laptop 😊
Hi Steve, thanks for watching. I don't believe there is one for Native, but there are other DAW remote apps for iPad that you could use, I would think. Assuming you are running Native inside Ableton or other DAW. Can Native run standalone?
@@therecklessempire You can run Helix Native from within MainStage if you are Mac based. This is the way I'm going now. The new Apple silicon laptops and Mac minis are capable of running these software applications. The Helix floor now sits in my cupboard 🙂
Hey... that's cool. I didn't think of running Native within Mainstage...
@@therecklessempire Yeah, we don’t need to stop at Helix Native, Neural DSP, MIDI Guitar 2, Bias FX etc, all can be added in MainStage. MIDI floor controller will be needed but the choice is limitless.
@@steve_one Way cool.
The Attitude II from memory wasn't nearly as expensive as the Attitude III - those things are mega bucks!
Hi triv, thanks for watching. You are right, the Ltd II was about half the price of the Ltd 3, but with the way Yamaha have aged the timber, and the updates to the neck joint, etc, it is definately a premium instrument, up there with the MM Stingray, etc.
So you’re not using any external cross over unit?
Hi Kory, thanks for watching. no mate, no external cross over unit. will look at XLR splitters in an update version to come
updated version ruclips.net/video/FRbkXanJU54/видео.html
Using my helix floor. Can I use the pro designer to adjust levels on the output block?
Hi Jeff... I haven't tried to do this and the template is only set up to change patches or snapshots. However, There are two slider buttons on the "stomp" page which you would assign to the expression pedal. If you set the expression pedal to control the output volume, then the slider would mimic the expression pedal and give you what you are trying to do.. Let me know how it goes.
Wow great vid,
Thanks very much. Glad you liked it
This looks like a great solution for my Helix LT. I am currently connected via usb and a surface pro tablet running windows. This gets rid of the cables! Here is my question: How do I find out if the HELIX Floor/LT/Rack Wireless MIDI Controller will also run on an IPhone?
Hi, Ed Saxman is the developer. I originally found the link to the software from here line6.com/support/topic/38507-hx-stomp-wireless-midi-controller-ipad-aug-2021-updated/ As far as I am aware, the software only works on ipad, due to the screen size, but i could be wrong.
@@therecklessempire ok. Thanks!!
Awesome info. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment
I just received a DiMarzio DP 295N 'Relentless' neck bass humbucker pup for a homebuilt custom bass that I'm completing. I ordered it from Muziker UK, but it took ages to come and was shipped UPS from Croatia. They advertise it incorrectly as 'White' but this is a mistake as the nickel one has a white background and the reflections in the only photo of it make the pickup look white, it is nickel. They are comparable to the DP120 Model One (for the short-scale SG bass at the neck) but are much more modern, have much higher output, are potted and are specifically designed to be used in Billy's two-channel configuration at the neck to be mixed in or across two amps, covering the bass frequencies. DiMarzio has done zero marketing on this one and their website is notoriously underdeveloped, and full of missing information on this and many other pups. These are currently (July 2022) really hard to get. However, if you are building a dual channel (Billy Sheehan-style) bass then as a neck pickup, in combination with a good middle or bridge (I'm using Seymour SJB-3 Quarter pounder singles at mid and bridge) they are unmatched, as there doesn't seem to be anything else that would beat there frequencies response and output. They are a VERY specific use case though. Can't be used on their own as they only cover extreme bass frequencies and have very high output, especially for that role. I have to say, this neck pickup is built like an absolute tank and very heavy. I'm yet to test it in my homebuilt bass as not yet assembled, so I may well do a video on it at some point as there is barely any information on these pups and they are so interesting. I suspect they were made as an agreement with Billy Sheehan to produce both the P-style middle and a neck 'Relentless' set. However, as this fantastic video shows, they can't be dropped straight into Billy's premium signature basses as a replacement without routing them out, and Yamaha probably don't want people doing that. So, I suspect there's some politics between Yamaha and DiMarzio around this pickup powerhouse neck humbucker and hence the lack of marketing from DiMarzio. But WOW, what a unique gem of a pickup if you're building a dual channel passive bass!!!
Thanks for the great feedback. It would be great to get a view of how you progress your bass build. I find the combination of the two pickups gives a growl to the tone I can't seem to get with a single pickup. I do use the neck pickup in a couple of songs, by itself to get a really deep sound, using a Drop-D... similar to that of an octave pedal.
excellent job!
Thanks Frank!!
Hi. Just about the poor video quality...360p Would have been far better at least in 1080p60 or in 4K ! Nice playing though
Thanks The video transcoding is done by RUclips and they select your playback based on your situation. You can change your settings for each video.
Great track, love it!!
Thanks Phil. The EP will be released on the 28th of June
hello, i’m looking for something like this for my band, we need it for in-ear monitoring. we are 5 piece band, so i have a question - is it possible to get 5 stereo mixes for in-ears from this thing?
Maybe with another stage box? Can’t help any further tbh, sorry!
Hi, the QU has three stereo monitor outs and four mono. You can use two mono but then you have to control left and right independently, which is a pain. We have used this with up to 7 people most using a mono mix, and there has never been any complaints. The drummer likes stereo so he gets a better "feel" for the kit as he hits left to right around the kit, and I use stereo as I am usually mixing, but most people are used to either a mono foldback, or nothing, so just having the mono in their ears is more than fine. We "sum" the mono in the IEM packs. ie: the signal comes through both ears, we just don't get any panning of guitars on left bass on right, etc. Here's a link to our live rig. ruclips.net/video/FRbkXanJU54/видео.html

Nice one 👍
Thanks. Checkout some of our other covers or originals and let us know what you think.
I was trying to solve this exact problem - thanks. I do run the wet signal into a mixer and had to create an aggregate audio device on my mac to record both wet and dry in logic but that was the only addition I needed to make.
Glad this was useful to you.
