I’m sorry I’m not familiar with glycerol and I’m not sure if it’s a substitute for glycerin. I use boiling water so that it dissolves. I do add everything in exactly the order of the video. Sometimes I get a few bubbles (not many) and I skim the top with a piece of stiff paper. I don’t worry about it too much because I use the other side to print. They have always set up for me so I don’t know about substituting other materials. I hope that helps.
Hi! What is the purpose of the alcohol ? Would 45% work ok?
I think the alcohol keeps it from spoiling. Everything I watched suggested using a high percentage so that's why I didn't use 45%. Hope that helps
Ok. I just tried to make my first plate and its just a mess. I used glycerol that google said was the same as glycerin but when I pouted the 5:52 totally lumpy and not translucent. The gelatin didn’t solve at all. And lots of air bubbles on the surface. What do you think is wrong? Monica from Sweden
Hey Kathi an art group I belong to mentioned some stamps I stumbled upon at a thrift store would be awesome on a gelli plate. I laughed and said that 2 years of retirement has shown me what I actually need to what I desire. So, she told me that there are recipes to make your own. I have now researched this quite a bit on youtube and there are probably as many recipes. YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE who gives measurements, CLEAR directions, compare and contrast (even though its a different video), and whatever else I can't think of. Also, you are the ONLY ONE who adds 91% plus alcohol and you don't mention having to keep them refrigerated, so I'm thinking the alcohol is the key!! I, personally, need directions that could be in the "Something for Dummies" books, especially mixing any kind of chemical. I appreciate YOU!!
I know what your talking about. When I got interested in making my own gelli plate I also watched lots of videos! Good luck, I hope it works for you.
Loved your video. Im just little confused about measuring of cups. Which measuring cup you are using? What its name? I don't have this type of cup. Can i add these ingredients by regular tea cup or i need your specific measuring cup that you're using in this video? Thanks
I used regular kitchen measuring cups. Hope that helps.
Love this but I am wondering if you can use these inks and print on paper?
Personally I think they probably work better on paper.
I love this!! Thanks so much!
You are so welcome!
Why did you do the drawing on newsprint with underglaze? Wouldn't any paper with markers work the same? I would use newsprint and underglaze if I was making a transfer but in this case you are making a silkscreen to use with underglaze inks, right?
Yes any paper and marker will work. I like the underglaze applicator because it gives me a more unpredictable and uneven line than a marker. Sometimes I do use these for a transfer in this case I like the image and want to reproduce it over and over so I made it into a silkscreen.
I,m wondering if the commercial gelli plates are made using glass as a pouring surface as opposed to a metal baking sheet , which would have a slight texture . Even though they seem smooth , the baking sheets would have some “Tooth” , thus holding onto the ink . Just a thought ….
Great idea! It’s worth a try.

How long will this kind of plate last? Is there a natural shelf-life limit or can they be used indefinitely unless they tear apart or sustain some other, external damage?
I’m not an expert and I can only share what I have found in my own studio. I have some that I made almost a year ago and they seem to be fine but that being said I’m really not sure how long they will last.
I’m pretty sure that with the glycerin, they will stay stable indefinitely. I have had one for several years, and it’s still amazing. If you have a tear or an imperfection, you can always re-set it, but you would need a microwave or other heat source to do so. I’ve only done this is a microwave, but a double boiler would probably work as well.
I haven’t tried the oven. I have made a double batch and that worked. Let me know if it works!
Question -- have you ever put your tray with these ingredients in an oven? I had to make 2 batches to fill my large tray and I'm wondering if I need to do something to ensure the two pours don't separate. The first was starting to set up before the other was ready to pout -- less than 10 minutes.
We used to take gelatin capsules for hair and nail and skin heath. It does seem to work on hair. From the inside.
Beautiful explanation. What are the measurements for an a4 gelliplate?
I'm not sure I understand the question. If you are asking the size of an A4 sheet of paper it's 8.3" x 11.7"
Thank you so much of this clear step-by-step demonstration.
Thank you !
How long do they last
I still have the ones that I made for this video. To me it seems like they get better over time. The alcohol should keep them from spoiling.
Does anyone think that I can just do 1.5 part alc : 1.5 part glc : 1 part gel : 3 parts water regardless of actual measurements? As long as I keep the ratios the same?
I have increased the recipe keeping the ratios the same and it worked for me.
Thank you. Very informative. I've made a few smaller silkscreens using this method, and used 110 mesh silkscreen fabric, which was only $9.99 at Amazon for 3 yards. It will last me forever I think! Here's my question: The HTV I got a few years ago is in a packet of several colors, and obviously it doesn't matter what color it is for the purpose of silkscreening. But I would love it if the vinyl were transparent, so I could see exactly where the silkscreen will be applied. When I searched for clear HTV, the results were for sublimation. So I'm wondering if it the sublimation HTV will be the same as the colored kind in terms of strength, etc.
I have to say that is such an interesting idea! I don't want to give you an answer on this because I just don't know. I have to say that I do think it is worth a try and I would love to know how it works!
This is the best explanation for making a gelli plate. Now, I'm going to go make my very first gelli plate following Kathy's instructions!!! Thank you!!
Thanks. I hope it works well for you!
Distress inks won’t work on homemade but will on manufactured plate.
Thanks for the comment. I do agree that the home Gelli plates do have their limitations. Sorry it didn’t work out!
Love it. Thanks so much for this information ❤❤❤
You are SO welcome!
kathy, what alcohol do you use?
I used 91% isopropyl alcohol from Walmart.
I'm about to have a go at making my own gelli plates. While I am waiting for my gelatin to arrive, I've been wondering if adding a small amount of preservative to the mix would be beneficial in any way. I have a number of different types on hand because I make my own skin care products. I discovered you on Clayshare. Great stuff!
I think the alcohol keeps the gelatin from spoiling but pass that I’m not sure. I think it’s a very interesting concept and if it were me, I would absolutely try it. I would love to hear the results. Great job.
Many instructions don't include Alcohol. Why do some of them? What's the benefit?
Since gelatin is a food item I think it keeps it from spoiling
today 8/13/2024, I tried to find the Amaco Inks at different pottery supply stores. Any idea when the Inks might be available?
There has been a delay but it should be very soon!!!
Thank you. I needed such of recipe without using of a microwave. Your video is perfect.
Thanks so much! I'm glad it helped.
@@kathyskaggs4245 thank you. Can’t wait to try it. Want smaller ones-5x7 and circle. Can you use about anything for molds? New to the gel plate fun!! Kathy
@@Katmcb-r5u Can't wait to hear all about the shapes - great idea!
How that's really cool thank you for the session really liked it and learned alot 😊
Thank you so much... I paint larger paintings. So this size is right up my alley. 😊🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yes so great for bigger printing!
Hello, thank you for this amazing video tutorial! I would like to know if you can reuse the stencil after printing with the ink on the slab? Thank you a lot if you can answer! Xxx
If you question is if you can reuse the Ikon Stencil Art silkscreens - yes you can. I wash them and use them over and over. After I wash them I replace them on a plastic sheet or plastic wrap so they don't stick together.
Can I fire the bisque tile at cone 5? Thanking you in advance Kathy
The tile I’m using for the video is a low fire tile, but the technique should work at cone 5 if your tile is rated for that.
Is it safe to fire gel medium? What about fumes?
I tried to see if I could smell anything when firing and I didn't. If your concerned about it you may want to substitute wax as a resist. Hope that helps!
Thank You!!
Thank you for the video. Is there a reason that you didn’t just press the inked gel plate to the clay forgoing the tissue paper? And when there is remaining ink on the plate, just stamp it on another tissue for a second print
I found it difficult to print on the clay without it smearing but if you can get it to work that would be great!
Thanks Kathy!😀
Thanks Ms. Kathy! Gelli Plates are brand new to me. You are really motivating me!
Thank you so much!
Are we talking hours or days to dry?
It will take days not hours. It depends on where you live, if it's dry or humid.
Great video, yours is the best set of instructions I have seen! Thank you so much for sharing this with us ❤️
Thanks for this! Subscribed 😊
Hey Kathy, can you mix the new amaco inks to make different colors? Love printmaking. On clay blows my mind.
Just watched your RUclips on new amaco inks. Fun! Can you mix these colors?
Thank you! I have wanted to do gelli printing with a group of kids, but it was way, way above my budget. You just brought it into our grasp!
Perfect instructions!! Thank you!! I made 2 Gelli plates with your instructions and they came out beautifully.
I’m so glad to hear that!
Soo good and great to review after last week’s vegas workshop.
Thanks!
So great to see how they perform. Those new velvet underglazes really seem worth it. Thanks as always!
Thank YOU for watching!
Kathy have you used your home made gel plates for paper projects with any kind of paint? If so how was it? I seem to be struggling and I’m not sure if it’s the plate or the paper or the paint. If you or someone else has tried it for other than pottery I would love to have some feedback! Thanks
Ive watched quite a few videos about making these. Yours is the best... easy to follow and you give measurements that can easily be adjusted as well as ingredients that can be brought in most countries. Example is some videos will just say to buy the sachets but no details of grams used. In New Zealand those sachets/brand are not available. Thanks for making a universal video!
I’m sorry I’m just not sure and I don’t want to suggest something that doesn’t work.
I cant use the use light kits (wrong plug) but I can get a 30W led lamp in NZ. Your light casts blue purple. Is that something I need to ask for when I buy the lamp here?
This was super helpful!! One question though: Can you apply the ink to either side of the stencil? I want to print onto transfers, and it will have words, so I need a mirror image. Trying to figure out if I need to make the screen backwards. Thank you!!
Yes you can!
Only one coat of underglaze?
One coat will show some streaks but 2 or 3 it looks solid.
❤
