Phantomleaf WASP II Rifle Cover Fitting
Phantomleaf has been with us since 2018 and is finding world-wide use amongst serious hunters and Govt. agencies. Here's a very short video on how we chose to fit the Phantomleaf rifle cover to a bolt-action. There's not much to it and a number of ways you can acheive the end result. We chose to keep the integrity of the fabric tube around the action and buttstock.

3:10 its a jacket made for -15C its ot going to be raining
Thanks for commenting. We find there's a lot of confusion between various Gore products, with the biggest being that all products made with Gore are waterproof. Windstopper fabric has no backing layer and as you imagine, it's hard to glue a seam tape to the non-stick teflon membrane. Under Gore licensing, you can't call a Gortex garment waterproof unless it's seam-sealed and tested by Gore. Not many people uderstand this difference. Down here, we can go from -2 to +24 in 5 hours. Wind and rain are a factor, way more than snow, that users will face. Knowing that this jacket will get the user through a reasonable amount of rain is good, but they have to know there are limits. We also have user responses telling us how well the jackets did in rain for something that is regarded as "not waterproof". So, it's important to know these things down here.
7.5 mins in we randomly start talking about the Defence 4 ? Classic case of not reading/watching your content through properly before releasing it. Which is especially un helpful when your recommending / advising people on purchasing a potentially life saving survival tool. Less sales waffle! More simplified advice for Australian camping please.
HI George, thanks for watching and commenting. We try very hard to satisfy customers with information and are quite surprised that you don't want to know that both bags will work with the Defence 4 to provide an extreme cold bag system, with the felxibility of covering a vast range of conoditions. Nothing random about that, and being that that's an important fact in the decision process, we scripted it into the video. If you want to be told what you should buy so you don't need to think about it, or expend any effort in making a decision, just tell us where you want to go and what time of the year and we can tell you which of our sleeping bags to buy. Otherwise, feel free to tell us the content you want to hear, how the features should be included, explained or excluded, and how you want it related to Australian conditions and what those conditions are. On the "Australian Conditions" note, please feel free to list the brands and products that you feel relate best to Australian conditions. We're always interested in the views and experiences of others and use them to help shape our products and offerings. Thanks again for watching and participating in the coments.
The material rustles very much, it warms worse than helikon
Have anything that doesn't make you sound like a trash bag when you move around? Seriously that is an huge design flaw.
When you've used your skill and knowledge to develop a quieter IR treatment for face fabrics, let us know. We'll put it to Gore.
@@premierdefenceagencies8145 might want to talk to the guys over at arc'teryx with their LEAF line of clothing.
I know this is an old video, but I was wondering if you could speak to the durability of the cordura material over the knee pads. Is that material wearing out pretty quickly when dropping to your knees regularly? Im debating if i should get knee pads that are over the pants like alta industries that I can then change out and throw away without ripping my pants open at the knees.
Hi Tjay, we've had no reports of issues with the durabilty of cordura panels in any of our brands. Generally, the cordura will be the last thing to go, but if you're contunually kneeling on sharp stuff with the hard pads inserted, you will experience accelerated wear, which is only natural for the conditions. Under normal hard use, the cordura shouldn't be a problem.
We had the tropen and D4 issued in the Dutch army...together with the Carinthia hooped bivi ...it is a very warm combo...I'm a hot sleeper so I still using the tropen till around 0 degrees Celsius..

Hi For a three to seven day camping in a mountainous region, would you recommend the Tropen + Bivy Bag, Tropen + Defence 4 or Tropen + Defence 4 + Bivy Bag.
Hi A R, the choice depends on the expected temperatures and conditions that you're going to experience on the trip. And don't forget, you will need some extra temp range in case of enexpected bad weather. Without knowing where you're going and when, we can't offer you any advice on bag or combo selection, but you should be able to choose something to suit using historical data for the travel area at the time you're going.

Can you combine the Tropen with the defense 1?
Hi Jay, the answer is yes and no. Yes, because you can shove any bag inside or outside another, but no, depending upon wether there is enough room for you inside, once they're together. When a two-bag system is made, the outer bag should be made with a greater circumference so as to fit around the inner bag, without crushing the insulation. As you'd be aware, if you crush the insulation, it doesn't insulate. Carinthia haven't tried this combination and tested it so there is no themal rating for this it and adding the ratings won't give you an answer. Really, the only way to find out is to give it a go. Hope this helps.
@@premierdefenceagencies8145 Thank you for the reply. I'll just have to give it a go 😎👍
@@jaywalker5561 my defense 1 does seem rather roomy, but that lessens when using the grizzly liner.
how is the sizeing, are they big in size. im tall and i wonder what to get
The sizing is accurate. garmetns like MIG jackets have a little more room in them for the additional layers that you would wear the conditions the jackets were made for. See the sizing here. www.coolkit.com.au/sizing-info/
@@premierdefenceagencies8145 okok, im pretty tall how are they in length, :)
I am 6 feet tall and weigh 170....could I get away with the regular smaller size with the defense 1 ?.....thank you
Hi Michael, At 6ft, you are 183cm and should fit the 185cm limit of the regular bag. The question is your shoulder width. The bag is good for around an 82cm shoulder width, with the actual edge-to-edge width being 85cm. So, shoulder width and how loose or tight you want the bag are the defining factors in size selection. Hope this helps!

Good product review 🤙
recorded 2020 in 360p? Good content but video quality could be better, take is as constructive criticism not just complaining. Been looking for a good Tropen vs Defence 1 video and this is the best I found.
Don't take it as offence, but maybe constructive criticism: if you don't want to read all the comments to see if some's already noticed and there's an answer, or get the year right, perhaps a little more thought is required before hitting the enter button. We're not here to make blockbuster films. It can be kind of fun to do these but there's a significant consumption of time, funds and other resources to do them. We'd rather put that into better serving our customers. Also, check the pinned comment on the MIG 4.0 video. Thank you for the postive comment about the important stuff, the content of video. 🙂
360p in 2021? Oof...
RUclips decided that was what it was going to be. We'll get aorund to re-uploading it in higer res. Unfortunaltely, we'll loose the comments when we do.
I got the defence 1. Nice materials, well made, ut that hood with the tiny hoe drives me nuts. You can’t even really open it much. Drives me nuts and I really dislike it, because you can’t really open it.
HI Jim, Thanks for the comment. The hole is purposely designed ot be small and the reason is that when you're zipped in, it leaves only your nose and mouth out for breathing with minimal heat loss and maximum internal space. To do this with a traditional wide opening, like on the Tropen, you have to cinch the sides of the bag together with the drawstring, reducing the internal space for you head and shoulders. It's a bit hard for those who don't like having the bag on thier face, but once you're used to it, it's so much more comfortable and warmer.
Why wouldn't you seal the seams??
Hi Guys, We're starting to get some silly comments that are just bait or people with self-esteem issues. Happy for comments to stay open and we'll answer when we can. But before you comment, make it intelligent and relevant. The whole world sees this and you don't want to look silly in front of it. Enjoy!

How thick is the jacket is it possible to put plate carrier on top off the jacket?
Hi Andres, the thickness of the jacket is realative to how much the insulation has lofted. When squashed it wil be only mm thick. You can wear a plate carrier / vest / battle-bra over it and it will compress the insualtion down flat. The only thing you need to be aware of it that where any lofting insualtion of any brand is compressed, it will not insulate (why you need an insulated sleeping mat) so that part of the jacket under the carrier, will be less effective. But it's almost always hot under a plate carrier, especially if your active, and this kind of equals out!
@@premierdefenceagencies8145 thanks 👍
I know it’s a year old but I use my Mig under my plate carrier regularly in the winter. That’s with a fleece or thick sweatshirt under the mig if need be.
Great video pal. Could you tell me what the small tabs are for inside the defence 4? I can’t see any matching tabs on either the Defence 1 or Tropen.
Hi Tony, great question! Answer is they are fro securing the Polly-Cotton Liner that is available as an accessory. Not a very popular accessorie as you can use a grizzly and it really boosts the temp rating. Thanks for getting in touch!

@@premierdefenceagencies8145 thank you they ship. Do you know if there are any other us distributors they are charging 550usd for the mig 4
@@ilooklikeme7106 I know of no other US distributors. US sales is a tough gig with a strong local industry and support from the customer base, although so much "Made in China" gear is still sold there by various brands. Cool Kit pricing will be in Australian dollars, not US, so that jacket is around US $400 after sales tax is removed and postage added. Follow the checkout path and see what you get. You can always abandon the cart when you get the full pricing. ;-)
I think it's comical people wonder just how resistant to NVG's, because if anyone's aiming at you, you are gone, regardless. It's not even a consideration for civilians. However, if you are a contractor, the garment isn't going to save you either, it will be the professionalism of people you are working with. If you are doing something requiring being quiet, the garment isn't suitable. However, for civilians, it's a great garment. Many Special forces use the brand, as well as others, and they have the capability to order different garments from the manufacturers, made to specific requirements. I wouldn't use some of the companies garments, as they are not as efficient as the Snugpak competitor, and they are a little light wearing. Thankfully, the company are not as inefficient as Clawgear, who cannot even manage to get stock to their UK dealer network, and they are unsure who actually stocks their product! I'm not phoning around airsoft retailers to pick up garments when sourcing garments outside normal channels. Thankfully Carinthia is not as incompetent as Clawgear. Cheaper than Ace'teryx LEAF, decent quality, some garments are 'fragile' but the brand is a good one. I'm really harsh on the use of my gear, and it's not making RUclips videos! But don't try wearing this jacket to try to sneak up on anyone, as you'll be heard before you have to worry about your IR signature and get shot! Great for civilians, but not a combat-oriented product, so you don't need to worry about your IR signature. I'd use something different for that task.
Thanks for your comment Lumpy. So what is it you do / work for? This post does look a bit like an advert for Snugpack, who are actualy the reason Carinthia is in Australia, mostly due to poor thermal performance and deliberately obscure temp ratings that have left a lot of diggers very cold. Australian soldiers remember this kind of thing with a Vengence! We found Carinthia after researching the best options to satisfy the demand for relaible cold weather clothing and sleeping bags. Did you know the majority of Carinthia's manufacturing is military contracts, including UK SF and Royal Marines? Most of it to specification as opposed to MOTS. And Clawgear... well, yeah, they're offloading thier insluation clohting right now in their Outlet page. If imitation is really the sincerest flattery, then all their stuff we saw in Europe was mostly someone elses idea. Their insulation jackets (the ones they're deleting from production) look awfully familiar! It's a bit of an industry "in" joke. Does anyone use clawgear outside of the tacticoolers? Let us know. I do like thier AUG accessories. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@premierdefenceagencies8145 Oh I'm not endorsing Snugpak, or anyone else. But the UK and other Special Forces have the facility, I'll put it like that to order garments that are not available to the public. The Ministry of Defense buy Clawgear as do other agencies in the UK that I won't go into, thus I tried to source their gear outside channels, because the low profile jackets are quite useful (Audax). These are useful, and 'Instructor shirts' but their belts are not useful for military purposes, and their support staff are, well I'd fire the ones that dealt with me. There are some mountaineering brands like Rab that have proved useful, but people like military contractors can make garments to order. You can typically identify them by their NATO contract number/label. These days I'm a contractor. And I've used plenty of Carinthia gear, Snugpak, Crye, Acxe'teryx LEAF and just about everything that's available, and I've recently been sent more of the PCS thermal gear, some of which is available to the public. But yes, Carinthia do supply cold-weather gear to the Special Forces worldwide, but I prefer Ace'teryx LEAF myself, as the Canadians, like the Russians really know what cold is!
SUPREME KIT. SIMPLY THE VERY BEST.
I don't mean to be pedantic, but most consider thermal optics and NVGs to be different. NVGs do not rely on IR, where thermal (obviously) does. Otherwise, thanks for the video. I recoiled at Carinthia's video, because it shows the "thermal" image in (the now out-of-fashion) NVG green. Thermals are almost never in green, at least the ones I've used. They use black/gray or a graduated color palette.
HI Officialund, it is unerstood that the IIT in NVGs magnifies photons of minimal light we can see and light we can't see via a cathode, into light we can see, however that light we can't see starts in the IR bandwidth at 740nm, right after red visible light. This section is most often called the Near or Short Wave Infra Red spectrum and is left of arc for all the Infra Red wavelengths. This is also why you get a brighter image when you use and IR illuminator. If NVG's didn't pick up photons on these wave lengths, the illuminator would not have an effect, as like us, the NVG's wouldn't see IR light. Thermal sits on the right of arc of the IR wavelengths and is Long Wave Infra Red. Follow Act-In-Black on insta and see one of their QA sessions. You know they are gurus here. As to what colour image you get, white phos is becoming more popular for better clarity in certain situations but it buggers up your night vision, whilst green has less effect on it. In thermals, there's no direct image from the sensor, it has to go through a processor and be displayed on a screen. That means you can chose whatever colour palatte you prefer from black/white, black/red, black green, raindow, glowbow, ironbow... there's a lot to choose from. Fused vison is whatever get's programmed over the tube colour and eventually, what you know as night vision, will be indirect, with it too going through a processor for a clearer and possibly colour image, that is easily fused with thermal. Check out the guys we represent at www.andresindustries.de for thermal.
@@premierdefenceagencies8145 You’re correct about IR illuminators, and I may not have been clear. I have DTNVS White Phosphor Binos personally. My point really is that the jacket won’t reduce “NVG” signature, but could be effective in reducing Thermal signature. Or are you claiming that the jacket is reducing under true NVGs such as your std PVS-14/PVS30, etc?
@@OFFICIALUND You were clear in your first post and I tried to hint that you should check out some info on it, but ok. Treatments of fabrics for IR and NIR remission have been around for over thirty years (you've probably worn some and you haven't heard of them?) and it also includes choosing the dyes and pigments for how much they reflect in the spectrums, known as IR/NIR Values. The internet is full of images showing the differences between treated and untreated fabics, paints, buckles etc. As to thermal, anything that fully blocks heat transfer will defeat it. Are you, with your white phos DTNVS going to go to Gore's engineers and the defence technicians that develop and test this stuff, and tell them they are wrong? Our experience starts at AN/PVS 2 and continues, as we offer Act-In-Black products via Andres Industries, which means when we write a techincal document for a night vision tender, we had better know what we are on about. Our sniper products from Phantomleaf are carefully developed with techincal fabrics and dyes chosen solely for IR/NIR remission and are the best performers under NVG's that we have ever seen, and we have seen a lot. Now, everything has reflectance values and if your clothing and equipment values differ greatly from your surroundings, you will "beacon" under NVG's, and that's what its about, an IR type of camo. I appreciate your questions but you need to consider what your knowledge of the subject is before you say "that can't happen". We may be rough and unpolished in our videos, but we are knowledgable and the people who make this stuff are way smarter than us. We'd rather look a little slow than like "tactical wankers". you have a channel too, and your channel's targeted viewers will be merciless with you in their comments if you're just reading off the brochure. If you've had miltary experience, don't rely on that as your only knowledge base either, militaries teach just what you need to know to do the job and nothing more. We've been there too and these videos we do are to educate users on out prioducts to help them make better decisions with critical equipment. Get that knowledge built up and you can approach you videos with confidence. Stay Safe!
Isn’t the Tropen designed to be inside the defence 4?
yes.
HI GadgetMart, the Tropen is a stand-alone bag made for hot-tropical conditions with a large temp variation. It does fit in the D4 and Carinthia sell Tropen and D4 as a system, but as far as we know from speaking with Cairnthia, it's not specifically made for bag-in-bag use. The main reason they put the two together is that with a center zip and side zip, it reduces the heat loss from having both zips located together. If you ever use the US Army bag-in-bag system, you'll know how painful the double zips are and that it causes a cold bridge. Hope this helps!
@@premierdefenceagencies8145 I have the Defence 4, it’s a great bag. I’ve just got the FECSA British Army modular sleep system for my G/F that does tie together. (Defence 4/Tropen copy)
@@GadgetMart Carinthia stuff for UK MoD is usually to their spec and will vary from the military-off-the-shelf gear. That will be a great combo!
Text copied from Carinthia sleepingbag catalog: SLEEPING BAG SYSTEM (TROPEN + DEFENCE 4) The system consists of the two sleeping bags described above. Considering the low weight of the system (approximately 3 kgs in total), it guarantees unbeatable thermal performance with minimum packing size and weight. The Defence 4 serves as the outer sleeping bag and the Tropen as the inner sleeping bag. Both bags fit into the compression bag of the Defence 4. This combination of a centre-zipper outer bag and side-zipper inner bag provides maximum comfort in extreme conditions. The inner sleeping bag also serves as a liner bag. It is easy to wash and dries quickly. There is no need to wash the complete system.
Sweet jacket to be sure! Surprised at how much of a rustling sound there is though.
The outer fabric is a little noisey at first, but quietens down with with use and washes. The relativey new G-Loft Windstopper is not rated as low, but has a great outter fabric from Cordura. @@premierdefenceagencies8145 I might actually have to take back what I said, as a team-mate of mine is having problems with his knee pads... In his case, he has a 30" waist and 34" inseam... UF Pro just don't go that long, meaning he had to buy the 32" waist, which then hangs too loose and low for the kneepads, but can't be worn higher up with a belt, as it bunches up under the belt and causes serious chafing.
@@Sarrienne I hate to say it but your teammate is likely in the world of custom fitting to get any propper fit. In thier case, the Crye adjustment system is a benefit but whatever off-the-shelf size they get, there will be compromise. Most uniform makers aim to fit what is called the 95th Percentile of people, but there are some shapes that you will find outside this. In actuality, the ADF protects the AMCU pattern and therefore contols all items of equipment issued in it. Being in defence industry, we we're able to borrow one for the video and return it. You may find one being sold by some unscrupulous type somewhere, but that has it's own risks. Thanks again for watching and commenting and we plan to have some more gear videos posted soon, including some Rough & Ready short videos.
I know this is a really old comment, but Crossfire Australia was the manufacturer for the GP Jacket in AMCU and they made many for public sale in coyote brown.
