Why You Should NOT Stack (or Play the Left Side)
Просмотров 12 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Ben Johns has an iconic playstyle where he takes up most of the court and hits most of the balls, leaving just a sliver of the court for his partners Anna Leigh Waters and Collin Johns to cover. Rec players often try to emulate this with their partners, designating a left and right player and stacking in matches. But is this a smart strategy? What do you need to do it effectively? Hey PB, great video. This is one I come back to every now and then as to remind myself of helpful tips I may have forgotten as time goes on. I am curious if you are still hitting primarily flat drops or are you hitting with more spin these days? Been trying to reinvent my drops as well.. Thanks!

Badminton players are hard to beat. They move so well on the court and have combination of soft game, hard slams, and deep lobs.

4:50 Softening ur wrist reduces the staibility of your paddle i.e. reduces sweet spot in exchange for dwell time of the ball on ur paddle. The sensation comes from the micromovement of ur paddle when the ball comes in contact with it. This helps with controlling ur own power and accuracy for precision shots (and even deception i.e. hesitation dink). This is in contrast to non-precision shots like counters where sweet spot is more valuable because it's difficult to ensure the ball hits the middle of the paddle, so we stiffen up ur wrist to increase the stability of the paddle increasing ur sweet spot and decreasing dwell time

1:18 #1 Think about catching and throwing instead of hitting (limit backswing) 2:11 #2 Contact ball in front of you instead of beside or behind 2:44 #3 Imagine a ceiling extending above the net and don't let followthrough go above that ceiling 4:02 #4 Try practicing with pickleball under armpit to limit backswing and followthrough 4:39 #5 Try softening your grip 5:11 #6 Try practicing with off hand finger on paddle to help limit paddle motion 6:25 #7 Keep your chest level during dink (don't lift your chest up when dinking) 7:05 #8 Try to draw a line with your paddle where you want the ball to go 7:44 #9 Try to crab walk/shuffle step when dinking to help stay balanced 8:42 #10 For small steps, plant one foot and side step to dink 9:18 #11 Try to create a pause before every time you hit the ball when dinking 10:17 #12 Try slice/underspin on dinks 11:19 #13 Try to dink the ball out of the air whenever possible 11:59 #14 Try topspin dinks (while maintaining good form) 13:19 #15 When returning aggressive cross court dinks, try resetting the dinks to middle of the court to get back on balance 14:04 #16 Try to hit more aggressive dinks when you can (i.e. dinks that are deeper with a flatter trajectory to get your opponent off balance) 14:57 #17 Only dink crosscourt if the ball is at or inside your outside foot. If the ball is outside of your outside foot just reset to the middle or in front of yourself in order to not attempt a difficult cross court shot. 17:22 #18 When resetting the ball, try to hit the ball shorter into the kitchen to force your opponent to hit up on the ball 18:22 #19 Mix up the target of your dinks, changing crosscourt/down the line and forehand/backhand. 19:39 #20 Attack your opponent’s weaknesses (e.g. if they have a weak backhand, target their backhand).

I i know its 10 months late but you are hutting more of a flick than a roll which is still a good shot just not quite the same. On the roll its more about turning your wrist via your forearm and on the flick its the classic of throwing a frisbee. But yea on the roll your wrist is kinda along for the ride similar to a forehand drive just in completely different ways

1:18 #1 Make contact will ball when it's falling 2:03 #2 Stay further back after serving 3:03 #3 Use small compact strokes 3:35 #4 Hit ball like you are tossing the ball 4:19 #5 Keep contact point in front of you 5:13 #6 Try just pushing the ball 6:24 #7 Try to keep apex of flight path on your side of the court 7:08 #8 Try slowing down your swing and gradually speeding it up to the correct speed. 8:15 #9 Don't use your wrist in the drop shot 9:00 #10 Try to get apex of flight path in your own kitchen so ball is falling over the net 10:28 #11 Try to keep overall arc of the shot low 11:29 #12 It's better for the ball to be low with a longer trajectory than too high with a shorter trajectory 12:07 #13 Adjust your grip tightness to what gives you the best results 12:56 #14 Get to the spot you are going to hit from and pause there for a moment before hitting 13:44 #15 Don't lift your chest up when hitting the drop shot 14:03 #16 After becoming consistent with your drops, try windshield wiper motion to add topspin 15:06 #17 Use a small compact swing 15:16 #18 Get your feet in place to hit the drop shot 15:56 #19 Angle your wrist to aim your drop shot 16:55 #20 Visualize the drops

SURPRISE - I think most players, don’t realize this (maybe I’m wrong -we’ll see) but, surprisingly to me at leaset, in all the top player matches `i have watched and counted shots - the fact is, that provided the players are more or less at the same level in the same level, MORE THAN 50% OF THE POINTS ARE WON AS A RESULT OF A MISTAKE - AN ERROR. Where I see an. Obvios forced error, or a clear winner they go down as WINNERS in my little book. If I’m not sure, then I dont count the rally at all, OR I go bk and watch it, 2-3 times, and make a decision, or decide that one doesn’t get scored. I’ve watched dozens of pro-SINGLES matches, and it’s the same with these guys as it is with ordinary club players - it’s MORE than 50% mistakes - as high as 2/3 sometimes. I will watch another 10-20 games just to be sure, but, never once have I seen a match where the number of winners exceeeds the number of loosing shots - unless of course a player is having a real easy match- then clearly winners are by far the majority. AM I MISSING SOMETHING? Try it for yourself. Makes me want to play differently. Chris

Sweet - helped push some discussions with people in my league it felt really awkward playing with due to inconsistency on taking balls. I have a difficult time with people that don't slide out of the way to give me space to hit my 3rds, dinks - often shorten my swing and make errors to avoid hitting them.
