Awesome brother
Kerville amd Fredricksburg are great little towns! The hills are crazy steep! I stopped at the brewery also
I bet this video was recommended to me to watch by the algorithm due to "no crashies, no flatties, no wammies" :)
Always a treat! I hope somewhere along the way you can show your route. I know a few times you’ve gotten off the Southern Tier route. Again, thanks for posting.

I have watched every video! Fantastic. I appreciate your wanting to call your son on his Birthday…shows what kind of guy you are. Hats off to you. Keep them coming please.
As far as I know Texas is the only state where you can ride a bicycle on the interstate common sense to tell you to use the shoulder though
AZ, CA, ND you can ride the interstate when no other reasonable road is available.
I've ridden I 20 in East Texas at 2 in the morning One time while on a bicycle touring trip and I have to say it wasn't that bad the shoulder wasn't as littered with debris on west bound lanes which was the direction I was going
One thing watching videos is knowing where you're at . You do a good job posting location so we can sorta visualize a map of your route. Goathead thorns is a concern. Youre probably using sealant. My go-to food is bread and pbj too.
Been seeing your videos pop up...finally have time to binge watch them. It's always awesome to see others' trips. My turn is coming up.
You’re back!! Saw this just before I turned in for the night. This part of Texas looks nice. Next week I start planning my route across Alabama and Florida, so I will look forward to your experience. Thanks for keeping this going!
Excellent video awesome music thank you for sharing your talents and adventures
Thanks for the great videos, David! I have watched every minute so far up to this episode. I am planning on riding the Southern Tier from San Diego next month (Feb. 2025), so this is very valuable information! Is that a GoPro you're using? If so, what model and what settings do you use (i.e., wide angle or super wide or regular).
Awesome, I am excited for you! I used the DJI Osmo Action camera. I recorded 1080p and 60fps. I used wide angle and the RockSteady shake-free and the Dewarp settings.
did you finish?
what kind of bike you riding? is it a steel frame, i notied you got all dem heavy ortlieb bags
I am riding the Specialized AWOL 2017. It has a steel frame. It is a very smooth ride when it is fully loaded.
Thanks for the videos. Did you select and purchase the Adventure Cycling Association's - Southern Tier route?
I did purchase the Adventure Cycling Association's printed maps for the Southern Tier route about 6 months before I planned on starting the ride.
Glad to see this posted … I was beginning to worry something happened to you. I’m enjoying the adventure.
Thank you for your concern. I was hoping to post a video once a week, but with the holidays and a few other obligations I haven't been able to keep that pace. I am working on a few, but I probably won't post another video until January.
Great video! Texas State Parks are awesome. I would plan rides in the Hill Country around a nightly campsite with showers. Many were the state parks.
Keep on crank'in it David !
Glad to see this edition. I’m yearning for my Southern trip in May. Keep posting, thanks!
David, your journey through the Southern Tier is a joy to watch 🌟🚴♂️. The peaceful park scenes and your camping routine really capture the freedom of the open road 🏕️🌄. Keep pedaling strong, brother! 🙌 Your determination and love for adventure are a reminder of life's simple pleasures. Much respect! ✊🏾🌍💛
I’m with you on that 15 mile stretch of terror! We were 3…. So we split up with plenty of space between us so cars could “hopscotch” around us! It was a Sunday afternoon…everyone heading back to the city
Did you have any concerns sleeping in tent with rattlesnakes and coyotes around? Any tips on wild camping for hopefully a future trans America rider?
Austin is a super cool city - amazing place - enjoy and be safe !!
The small stream that you crossed at 2:08 of your video is steep as F! The hill country in Texas can be brutal especially when you get close to Austin! I was on that section early October and really hot!
Tubeless is the way to go, love following your trip
David, your determination through the Texas Hill Country is inspiring! 🚴♂️ Tackling 90 miles of steep hills and dodging livestock isn’t easy, but you handled it like a pro. That tailwind was a well-earned boost, and the brewery stop added a nice touch to an intense day. Hope your warm showers host provided a cozy spot for the night, and best of luck sorting your plans in Austin. Safe travels on the rest of your journey! 🌟🍺
Thanks!! The clarity of the photography is great. I swear I could smell some of those Spring days. I’ll look forward to your next one!
Missing your trip!🥲
I should have a video up tomorrow!
I find it very peaceful in the middle of nowhere. Libraies are a good place to charge up. Be safe and hope you enjoy the ride without any problems.
Welcome to tx the land of spontaneously combusting humans
No clue but as i plan to ride this im very interested
Thanks for getting this out. Still don’t see anything that entices me to Texas. I love solitary, grand rides like the Dakotas or deserts of Arizona. This just looks bleak to me.
Are you using a green screen for your videos? There are no cars.
No green screen. :) Some days I was traveling through pretty remote areas and there wasn't much car traffic. But also I try to find moments when cars aren't around to film, because of the noise and also I don't want to be paying attention to the camera when I need to be watching cars and trying not to get run over.
@@davidcovington6073 even if you watch the cars they will still run cyclist over. Somebody doesn't like bikes. I was hit. Once by an ebiker and once by a truck.
I would like to know your route because there are no cars. Every place I ride there are cars passing me.
Vanderpool is just South of Lost Maples State Park which has showers. Not much there except that store.
Dude your videos suck there's nothing interesting with them at all an your cheap ass bike lmao
The "Purple Tree" is a Texas Mountain Laurel. The Texas Mountain laurel produces large clusters of flowers that have a strong sweet aroma to them. These trees require minimal maintenance and pruning and they never lose their leaves. The rolling hills in the area you rode through are challenging. I believe your rode through the area during the best time of the year. The spring flowers combined with the cooler temps are very enjoyable.
On my own bike tours in the Hill Country, usually in Spring, I'd see Mountain Laurel, Redbud, and Acacia. All very beautiful. I think what he saw when he mentioned the purple tree was actually Redbud. Laurel has a different shape and darker color of purple. We had it in our yard in Austin. Mountain Laurel blooms before the Redbud. Acacia blooms all summer. I'm guessing this segment of the ride was in April.
Mom here is curious about your downhill speed. You mentioned the climb miles per hour, I am thinking it will look faster on camera, but not the 50mph in my imagination!
Good News! My records show I only got up to 48.5 mph
@@davidcovington6073 Like skydiving--it is best I do not know until after! Geesh-that is fast on 2 skinny tires and with no inflatable body suit! Then, there is climbing Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park!
Thanks…. I know its a chore to put up and edit something that happened yrs ago.
Wow I look at these knowing that you were 6 months ahead of me!
Nothing like the open road - what a marvelous ride - you are inspiring us all to get out and ride !!
This is a great place to camp in Fredricksburg, TX on your way to Pedernales State Park and Austin... maps.app.goo.gl/1vv4pSoHUo6HiPrQ8
I want to do this so bad. Thanks for the inspiring videos 🎉
Stop watching RUclips and get out and ride your bike buddy - the open road is calling !!!
Do it! I procrastinated until I was 49 years old. I almost waited too long. Cycling across the country was the best thing I ever did. Nothing compares to it.
I went tubeless 5 years ago & I'll never go back. I do carry bacon strips, a small bottle of Stans & a spare tube.
Hi David, I used to live in Austin and take self supported bike tours in the Texas Hill Country. There are some long steep climbs but the scenery is great. The state parks all have showers. I camped at Lost Maples SP and the Schreiner park ( used to be a state park ) in Kerrville is nice too. I have a great off-highway paved route to Fredricksburg and the connectors to Perdnales State Park and Austin if you like. There is a campground near the airport in Fredricksburg where I met other ST cyclists while I stayed there. Great place with showers. People are used to seeing folks riding the ST route. I can send you a link to my 400 mile loop but most of it is off your itinerary. We live outside Durango CO now. If you come this way in the future we will host your stay. Cheers!
I’m laid up from hernia surgery, so I appreciate you getting this out. I would love to be on my bike in northern AZ, but riding with you helps. Glad you haven’t run into any people problems! Looking forward to your next drop!
I rode up the Pacific coast the summer of 2020. A lot of the fast food soda fountains were closed(I usually filled my water bottles up). In 2021, I rode across the U.S. COVID was big on the Navajo reservation. Everything was closed on the reservations. I'm kind of a loner & I rough camped the whole time so it didn't bother me too much....& no, I never did get that COVID shot. I never trusted the government after they made us take those non-FDA approved anti-nerve agent pills during Desert Storm.
