I love building guitars! Join me as I build original design electric guitars and share my guitar building tips and tricks. On this channel you will get full guitar building series and detailed 'How To' videos describing the step by step process for some of the trickiest parts of building guitars.
My guitar builds cover everything from designing, wood choices, shaping guitar necks & bodies, installing truss rods, neck carving, guitar fretting, guitar binding, installing guitar pickups & electronics, guitar set ups, dyeing and colouring, finishing & polishing guitars.
I build original and reimagined versions of classic guitars. Everything I make is for sale and I also like to make videos of my guitar builds to show customers how their instruments are made. Its also a great way of making friends within the guitar building community! I've also entered the Great Guitar build off for 2021 & 2022 as a bit of fun and to help share what I've learned.

Reimagined SG Build | Ep.2 making a Neck
I absolutely think the old designs serve as a great jumping-off-point. We know that those designs work, but there is always room for improvement. I'm working on my first bass body which is inspired by a few different classic designs - by shooting the middle of those designs plus some of my own improvements, I've come up with something quite beautiful that I'm proud of and excited to fine-tune for release to the wider public
I'm currently attempting a build ( my first complete ) and I'm curious about the neck pocket on Gio's Les Paul . Do you need to taper the neck pocket or can it be flat like a Fender style neck . I've recently stumbled upon your series and they have become an essential resource .
@@jonlewis63 Hi John, thanks for the support and comment. Do you mean taper or angle? The taper for the heel follows the taper for the neck, (I.e the width), the break angle I do the same as the fender style (I.e no break angle), but that’s only possible because I recessed the bridge into the body by 4mm. If I didn’t do this then I’d need to angle either the neck pocket or the neck heel. Let me know if that’s not what you were asking. 👍
@@TornelliGuitars Thx for the quick reply . That is what I was asking . Just to be clear , I either recess whatever bridge i use ( 4mm ) or rout the neck pocket on an angle ? I was also interested in the fretboard height above body ?
@ hi Jon, no not whatever bridge, just depending on the bridge. I’m happy to jump on an Instagram call for 5 mins to explain if you like, otherwise it’ll be a long reply. Firstly what bridge do you have?
@@TornelliGuitars Gio your very kind to offer a call and maybe I'll take you up on that when i have all my ducks in a row .Thx again !
Perfect lesson. Domo Arigato, Sensei!
Love the natural finish on the Tornelli one and love the bevels on the Sweet T one, both beautiful guitars!
Have you ever tried shaping the neck on a belt sander? I've watched videos of guys shaping necks in minutes using a belt sander or deadhead sander that fits between the volute and heel. They start by faceting the corners then quickly work into rounding.
The back and forth conversations in these types of videos is a great concept. Talking about all aspects of the builds and the thinking behind decisions is really informative and interesting. Awesome builds yet again!!
@@piptyson5512 thanks, that feedback is really useful!😀👍
Thank you so much. We had so much fun doing this together. We've only just begun too, so much more to come!!✌️&💙

Brilliant. Many thanks
Was wondering just the other day where you were, Gio; so good to see you back, and together with Todd. Lovely looking guitars too, both of them!
We're having too much fun my friend. Thank you for your support!!✌️&💙
It’s is SO good to have you both back online guys. Love both Les Pauls, each of your own design languages are right on point too. You know it’s going to be a great video when Todd has 3 pairs of glasses on at the same time.
Thank you Owen. We're happy to be back. I try and limit the glasses to 3 pairs but I have caught myself with 4😂 I don't know why I do that? ✌️&💙
Lucky 77th sub on Bench Critters! First its great to see you two back in action. Second congratulations on the official announcement of the partnership. Third I think both of these builds have been your best work to date. It is so hard to choose between the two for a favorite as they both have their own "space" in the market which is why I think this as a partnership is going to soar. Not only for your personalities that naturally pull people in or the super supportive spirit in both of you. Coming out of a bad period with Rona and the current fiscal night mare economy I think you will do well aiming at the top tier players / buyers since the low end is swamped in mass produced random copy cat businesses. What ever you end up doing I am right there with you guys waiting to learn and admire from the effort you both bring to the workbench.
@@borgonianevolution Bill you are uncommonly kind my friend and it doesn’t go unnoticed. We really appreciate the support and I hope you’re doing well. We’re both excited for this next phase to get going and it’s good to be back!😀👍
@@TornelliGuitars Good people doing good things need to have a light shine on them. Specially the way the world is today. Well earned and well deserved. If more supported good people publicly instead of dragging others down all the time the world would be much better off.

It's good to finally see another video, Gio. Todd, that guitar looks gorgeous! Gio, your version is beautiful too (as are all the guitars you make). I used the same Gotoh bridge on my very first build and I have to say I love it! You shouldn't need to recess the bridge if you have the right neck-break angle for it and, ideally, a carved top.
@@bhartissimo Thanks Bart, yes I should have thought the bridge through a bit more carefully!👍
Thank you Bart. I did a break angle on the last guitar I used that bridge on and it does string way easier however. The issue was getting the strings to sit off the body at the height we like. We both decided to recess the bridge which solved that problem but introduced another! This is what we do😁!! You know the story brother! ✌️&💙
Good to see you guys back, great guitars - thanks for the video - Cheers from Canada!

I feel the same. I love mine but Gio's is a work of Art as all of his are! I feel so humbled to be partnered with such a great maker! Thank you for the kindness!✌️&💙
Woah, the boys are back in town!!!!! I may ruffle feathers, but I prefer Gio's design, but I would want Todd's wood choices. Both, however, turned out absolutely unreal, and it's good to see you both! 🍻
I actually prefer Gios guitar as well😂. The goal was to make something different from what I knew he would do just to showcase what could be done with both of us following the same basic rules! His guitar is so awesome. I love mine too but it is outside my normal style. Thank you for the comment!✌️&💙
Wonderful to see you both back - genuinely so, and congrats and good luck with the new venture. Also great to have some reimagined LP closure 😂 I really don’t like Les Paul’s (and really dislike ToMs) but you’ve both done amazing things. (apologies Todd) but the understated elegance of Gios really tickles my tastes. Reminds me of a 125/295 and the late, great and woefully under the radar Geordie Walker. That top is lush. The commission build alongs is a fabulous idea. Exciting times ahead for you both.

Man, oh man, I _love_ what you built. I'm not even a fan of LP style guitars, but for that one, I would change my mind. I have a build in progress where I envisioned almost the same finish, so this is a sign to do it. Really well done.
@@peachmelba1000thanks brother. I debated so long before deciding to do the finish like I did and I ended up so pleased with it. I'm glad you like it and by all means take that sign and build that guitar!✌️&💙
Beautiful job with the guitar. I love the choice in pickups. Sounds amazing.
did you apply the front and back at the same time, and if so how do you keep from leaving marks on the opposite side you've just covered? and then do you just leave it laying there or do you hang it to dry each night?
