    I just switched to Cuebase from Logic I’m trying to get my template to print stems but I’m having trouble routing it. In logic you could send a bus anywhere you wanted. In Cuebase it looks like that’s different. How did you route the VFX, VCAs, to the stems? I wasn’t able to tell from the video. Thanks!

    • @jonasfriedman
      @jonasfriedman 4 дня назад

      Hmmm not sure I understand what you’re running into because in my experience cubase has much more flexibility regarding routing and stems. What I do is create my group tracks. Then - the outputs of my FX go to those groups (as do the individual tracks) so for example cellos will have low string FX send and all of that is routed to a low strings buss. VCAs are just like a volume knob that controls a collection of tracks - these are not related to my groups (ie stem busses) instead - I simply route the individual instruments to the appropriate vca for extra volume control. Example - all cellos and bass strings connect to a lo strings Vca - however again the vca is not connected to the final group track or process of printing stems. When I go to print stems I simply highlight my group tracks and then in the export menu choose to sync selection with what is to be exported - if I remember correctly I do go over this in a bit more detail in my course since it comes with both my cubase and logic template - but I hope this may help to clarify! Btw - once you work out the kinks I think you’ll be very happy with the switch to cubase - I find it MUCH more enjoyable and efficient to work with personally

      @jaredlane9961 4 дня назад

      @@jonasfriedman I see where I went wrong. I grouped the instruments and put effects on the groups rather than the instruments having a send to an FX track then routing both to the "group/bus" for the stem. Thanks!

    Mr. Jonas - another great video pointing out an extremely important element, and sometimes overlooked. I have my personal story about importance of considering “where” your music is gonna be used and in what ways. Years ago when I started to compose music for the big sports arena events (for pre-game shows, presentations, awards etc.) I mixed and mastered my first piece before going to the pre-game rehearsal a day before the ESPN event. Thank goodness the day before, and not the same day 😂 I put a nice Hall reverb to make the orchestra track sound bigger than life… It was performed in the arena on the 25,000 watts sound system. The arena itself is huge - it sits up to 20 thousand people for the hockey game. It’s a huge building !! The reverb of the arena is tremendous !!! Guess what - I had to go back to my home studio and take the entire reverb out of the mix 😅 Then I drove back to the arena and checked it overnight. It worked perfectly for the arena, although in the car it sounded flat and with no depth without that nice reverb. The arena istself added tremendous depth and power to the mix, that you didn’t need any reverb, any limiter etc.(I never use compression on the orchestral mixes anyway). Lesson learned hard way… Love your videos BTW.

    Absolutely love your videos, content, methodology, approach to covering different genres. I especially dig production aspect of things, different ways of obtaining various un-typical sonic results. After spending years of composing for cinematic style orchestras, mastering an art of orchestration (for big arena sports events, NHL, ESPN -Hollywood action type, but more traditional, an actual virtual orchestration to be also performed live), ethnic music(Chinese, Arabic, Irish, Celtic etc.) and big-band (1930s-40s, Miller, Ellington, Bssie), and after recording a jazz album I wanna dive into sonic landscapes. Your videos provide a great starting points - libraries for consideration from various developers, sound manipulation, pitch shifting etc. Bro, this is cool !! In one of your videos you mentioned Mark Snow. I met Mark during an ASCAP film music workshop at NYU in the early 2000s. At that time I was playing keyboards as a bandleader with Phil Collins production show at Disney, and started to immerse into music for media. Mark answered bunch of my questions regarding his score for X-Files movie. Great guy, easy going and extremely knowledgeable. I’m gonna watch your videos again, this time with a paper and pencil :) It seems that you tend to use certain developers, and various audio snippets as building blocks…

    I definitely agree with tip #4. Reason being is that the amount of processing being used for all the delay & reverb from the plugin may be too much so having it as a WAV file may be better on the CPU. Imagining using midi for every sound will not afford processing power if you want to add in other orchestral instruments. Spitfire Audio's libraries take A TON of processing, so it just makes sense to save as much CPU for those kinds of libraries

    I will add, EastWest Composer Cloud plus Cuckoos Reaper as your DAW, for less than $100 up front, you have two feature complete sets of libraries plus a DAW, and it continues for $30 a month. I have really been wishing that sample libraries like Vienna Symphonic Library, Spitfire, and Orchestral Tools would pick up this trend. The only bummer here is that this is not a sort of Rent to Own kind of setup, I would consider paying a larger monthly amount over the course of say five years to have a license to the entire library with no further monthly payments required after the five years... This is just a hobby for me, I can't justify thousands of dollars for these libraries.

    Just curious: So if you’ve got 18 STEM groups and 4 FX tracks per group, that’s 72 FX Tracks. How do you get around the 64 FX track limit? Or are you omitting certain unused FX for some of the STEM busses there? Thanks for the channel. Great to have some working composer insights. Cheers!

    • @jonasfriedman

      I actually wasn’t aware there was a limit - I haven’t run into it yet and it’s possible for the reason you mentioned - I don’t need ALL fxs for all groups - for example I don’t use delay on my short strings or my boomers stems or my accents- so maybe I’m just about to hit the threshold but hadn’t noticed yet 😅

From you can meet them in the most random places. In a bar, in the subway, laundromat. All these folks told me these things but it never bought any chances at showing what I can do. Looking forward to learning more from you

    • @jonasfriedman
      @jonasfriedman 23 дня назад

      @djdavis844 - are you asking where to meet directors, producers or showrunners? Or where to meet other composers? In regards to meeting other composers there’s a lot you can cold email. I’d personally recommend taking it a couple steps further - if you see someone is going to be speaking at an event go to the event. Strike up a conversation. Look for any mutual connection you may have as this often makes it a million times easier to break the ice. If you want to skip working for other composers and meet filmmakers and showrunners I’d suggest getting equally serious about becoming a content creator - you have to make amazing work as a composer and then find a creative way to put it out to the world so that you can attract people to you rather than you chasing them down. It’s not easy but you have to have something to show people that grabs their attention. I was fortunate to get additional music credits on tv shows or movies people recognized and that made it easier to make introductions. Without that you have to point people to your own content imho

For me personally it that took a long time to build up to that income - figure 10 years but I got lucky with the ASCAP royalties which are harder to pull off today as cable tv and the format of 22 episodes a season is decreasing - however that may change again in the future who knows. A long time ago when I was very young and first learning to record myself - I was like 12 years old - the music store guy sold me on nuendo - it’s now obvious it was because it was more expensive (bigger commission)😅 since then the upgrades have always just been cheap so I’ve stayed with it but I also have cubase and it does everything a conposer needs .. that said now working on a game nuendo has some cool integrations to Wwise but for composing work cubase does everything nuendo does other than that

      @@jonasfriedmanHaha love it. And if I’m not wrong Dolby Atmos. I did a chatGPT to compare cause I’m a nerd and founds a TON of really cool fx and dialogue stuff that syncs even afrer edited heavily in nuendo. As we plan to create animations from scratch with all the VFXs, VOs and music as well this is the first time I will go back from Studio 1 to Nuendo and Cubase. The midi editing is simple great

      @@jonasfriedmanoh, no no thought about the software that perhaps was upgraded since the video. Seem to have potential for a lot. Just found you a month ago and really enjoy your content and talent!
