2011-2017 Honda Odyssey Transmission Fluid Change
Just started inserting mine yesterday, I’m screwing in 2 clips per light to make sure it stays put when the tape gives out, even tho I’m using a hairdryer to heat up the sticky side.
I also made my own extension cable out of 18/5 wiring, marine heat shrink wiring since I have 2 areas where I’ll need to bridge.
@@iridium.090sounds like a great install!!
Is that wire a 14gauge or a 12 gauge wire?
14 gauge.
This was very helpful thank you.
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Link for the adapter?
It’s in the description.
Do you need the engine running while draining the excess. Thanks
Yes
i’m about to mine 2019 ram with 3.92 axle and limited slip, I know everyone is saying 18foot lbs for fill and 44 foot lbs for drain and that does sound correct but I asked the dealer when buying my oil and they said the torque for my truck is 52 foot lbs for fill and drain and that sounds wrong to me :( they said it’s cause i got the 3.92 with limited slip ….
I would follow what the dealer says unless you have reason to believe they are wrong. If the drain and fill plugs look similar and are in similar material, then it makes sense they would have similar torque specs.
@ my drain and fill plugs are same as yours in the video , 14mm drain and 8mm fill. why i’m leaning towards dealer being wrong with saying it’s 52 foot lbs for both
@@nobody1322In my opinion, I’d stick to the specs I used then.
Bennie - Great video. I've seen a lot of videos RE the Predator 3500 Gen. In the owners manual it states that the generator must be grounded prior to use. But I've never seen anyone actually do that in any of the videos. Got any thoughts on this? Is it really needed?
Thanks! I think it’s one of those things that they have to say for legal reasons. It is a safety thing, and it does add a level of safety to earth ground it whenever it’s used. In my opinion, it would be a rare instance to encounter a problem not grounding it. Personally I never have. That being said, for legal reasons, you should always ground it. :)
This is doable with 6 jack stands and a warm garage yes?
Yes, it’s obviously easier with a lift, but you don’t have to have one.
Thanks for this awesome video. I followed your advice step by step and I was able to do this job by myself! Thanks.
You’re welcome! I appreciate it!!
i wonder if this would work on my 2010 F-150. maybe i could buy this and modify it with angle grinder if the frames are same width.
It would be worth checking with Dorman to see if they offer one for the 2010 model.
So I've had this issue for almost 3 years and didn't know how to resolve it, I had to disconnect the cable that indicates the trunk is open so it won't kill the car battery, and I casually strolled into RUclips and found your video, just tried it and boom it worked, Thank you so much man I sincerely appreciate 😊😊
You’re welcome! Glad you found the video!!
What if I want to change the gear oil filter for it?
You have to remove the transmission and split the case to replace the filter.
@bennieaust thank you very much!👍
@ you’re welcome!
@@bennieaust Do you have any other clips about maintenance or repair of Ford Ecosport cars? Or how to diagnose by App Forscan?
@ sorry, I don’t currently have any other videos covering that.
Finally someone with something helpful. Great video. Even if my 2011 2.0tdi 140hp don't show fault code, it bangs, loose power, and as soon as it's slightly warming up it's gone. Have also changed the dcf but did not fix it. Well it fixed the rattling from the dcf so still happy I did that job(the garage did, 1700$). Well I think it's time for an obd checkup while doing it. In Norway it's NOT 450$ for 4 new injectors. Great help man👍
I had a hard time finding help on this issue when I first encountered it. That’s exactly why I shot this video! I have run into this issue on a bunch of these cars so I know it’s common, and a little tricky to diagnose. Thanks for watching!
I really like the idea of using ODB reader to measure the temperature, as I do not have an thermal gun for this purpose. Is there any difference between 2011 Sienna and 2017-2021? Mine is 2011 and I don't seem to see any difference in the procedure.
Im not sure the exact difference off the top of my head. I’m sure it’s very similar if not exactly the same.
Do you know if this would be the same procedure for the 2024 pilot with the 10 spd? Thank you in advance. Good video
I think so but I haven’t personally verified it yet.
Thanks for this in-depth look at the 2007. Mine needed very little to pass safety, a testament to their attention to build quality. The car runs amazingly...waiting for my next big road trip!
They are the best road trip car!!
Cheaper than a transmission for sure
For sure!
Had same issue. Encountered mine at 70k. Fluid drain and fill did the trick. More religious about changing after that
I think that’s the best way to prevent it.
Hi...hows the sticky tape holding up?please share your long term feedback
I've had to reattach about 6 (of 200) after a little over a year.
Your a BETA male
How does this guy know so much about transmission fluid but missed removing 2 bolts so he could access the fill cap
How is this question missing the question mark at the end? I guess neither one of us is perfect. :)
Was going to originally get this done at the dealership, but after watching this video and Car Care Nut's video.. I think I'll save myself money and do it myself. Thank you!
You’re welcome! It’s really a pretty easy job.
I've got an 05' F-150 xlt supercrew cab 5.4L 3v, 79k miles....i thought i had enough problems trying to fix timing...I've got a slap, only thing reading on diagnostic is VVT solenoids...so i bought Motorcraft...truck has been sitting for 2 years in a part of my driveway that collects a few inches of water when it rains...my 16yr old daughter wants the truck...im scared to look after i seen your video...lol New Sub! Looks you went above and beyond for the customer...and did a great job...a would gamble and say you have decades under a hood...I grew up in a big garage with any tool i needed because my father and grandfather were both diesel mechanics by trade....my father had 2 very bad strokes, and has dementia now and lives in a rest home....we had planned in moving to Myrtle Beach SC, from Kentucky when he retired with the whole family...they were about to close on a beautiful property with 3 garages, where we were to build that hotrod we had talked about since i was a kid, spending late nights at the garage getting cars finished....he had 55 and 57 he sold when i was very young...i had a 79 monte carlo we played around with when i was a teenager....but we hadn't picked a chasis....but sadly he had a stroke 2 months before retirement and one a year to the day a second stroke that debilitated him...the 05 truck I'm fixing was his, when they took his license, he gave me the truck....and i wouldn't sell it for all the tea in China, i sure miss not having a garage just to pull in, with air lines a roll around for metric, and a roll aroundfor standard, didn't have a lift though, they worked on alot of busses, and big floor jacks, and big ol jack stands, i couldn't tell you how many pizzas i ate with my father working late at the garage in the 80's, id love to wash my hands again with that old GoJo hand cleaner, and get cleaned up and eat pizza with my father again,.. But, im real scared to look under it now...😬✌️
Thanks for posting your story!! I hope yours does not turn out to have a rusty frame. This generation of F150 is not turning out to be a good one, as you know first-hand. It's unfortunate because when they are working they are great trucks. Hope you have many more years of life left in yours! Thanks for watching!
Like .Thank you. Hello from Ukraine.
@@АндрійЯрош-д8ц greetings! You’re welcome!
Great report !!! Thanks for info. Very pertinent information. 👍🏿
You’re welcome!
Crazy you did it with 1 gallon. My 2.4 gdi 2012 optima manual says 7.5 us qt. Which I got similar extract I did measure it. That’s just shy of 2 gallons. Also to people scared of using the valvoline. My owners manual says ATF sp-IV Kia genuine or other brands meeting above specifications. Good thing I had bought 2 gallons just incase. Though I should have checked the manual first.
I always state what it actually took when I did it because, for whatever reason, it seems manuals and google searches frequently are wrong. It can vary from year to year so it may not be exact for everyone, but it’s real world what it took for me. The most important part is doing the level check procedure correctly so that, no matter the quantity needed, you have it filled to the correct level.
I accidentally removed a 14mm little bolt from right behind/under the plastic overflow cap. A few drops came out of it but it appeared to not really do much. Did locate the actual drain plug with magnet after wards…… hopefully my transmission isn’t broken now ha lol! Does anyone know what the little bolt near directly under behind the overflow cap does? Man, I always do something stupid doing repairs and maintenance on the cars!
Sounds like you’ll be fine.
Great video. Straight to the point. Looks like my next project on my truck
Thanks! Best of luck with the project!
How much oil is required for toyota avalon 2015
1 gallon.
When screwing into the soffit to fasten the wire clips, are you only going into hollow vinyl or is there wood behind the vinyl you’re hitting?
My soffit is aluminum. That’s all I screwed into and it’s held up great.
I have had to make my own weldable plates but I sprayed all the rust with this product that turns rust back to metal first. Then I did all the welding and after that sprayed everything inside and out with undercoating. This was 5 yrs ago and I sold the truck last year and the guy that bought it is using it to haul hay rolls to peoples cattle ranchs and he knew about the frame but still says he has had no issues out of it at all. He has also stated that no rust has come back at all. I think the rust converter was a very good idea and would recommend that that part of the process to be added to any rust repair. This is the product that I used for this Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer Spray Black. I got it from amazon which was the cheapest place to get it. I liked it so much I have started using it on every car or truck I buy just to prevent rust from starting. Its that good and no I do nit have an Amazon store lol
Thanks for your tips and feedback!
Do all these pilots have the same issue.? I feel like every channel talks about transmission problems. I was looking to buy one but every time I watch a video someone is always working on the tranny. Is this car even worth buying??
Pilots have been plagued with transmission issues from year one. I think the transmissions were best from about 2008-2015. Anybody else feel free to chime in on their pilot transmission experiences. There is a lot to like about the Pilot but buy one with caution.
@bennieaust which one would you rather choose from, a 2018 Honda pilot or a 2016,7,8teen Toyota Highlander?
@ in my opinion the highlander would be a better choice.
@bennieaust I been looking at both the Highlander and pilot trying to make a good financial decision because I definitely don't want to be stuck with a whole lot of problems after spending that much money for a SUV
The question is. Should we be in neutral or park when setting the level after reaching correct temp? Should we be at neutral or park after cycling park drive neutral?
@@jeremyreeves8940 either one will get you the same results. I have tried.
When I did my Toyota. There is a obd2 jumper method to check trans temp without scanner. Some people say just check pan temp with temperature laser gun, others say no because outside pan temp is not accurate to inside. I did both methods at the same time to check accuracy. My temperature gun was about 5 degrees lower when the obd2 jumper method to dash lights kicked on. In most cases I think temp gun to transmission pan is accurate enough. The temp gun is say is 5-10 degrees reading under the temp inside the trans pan
i have a 2010 nissan altima 3.5sr the transmission slips a lot it runs and drives fine it’s just making a loud noise, could the fluid possibly be empty or do i need a transmission replacement
It’s certainly worth checking the fluid level before drawing a conclusion, but there is a good chance the transmission is failing and will need to be replaced.
I have a 2006 honda pilot and I've noticed a couple differences. 1 - the owners manual doesn't say anything about waiting 60 seconds and not longer than 90 seconds or whatever and 2 - my transmission dipstick seems a little different. The 2 dot hole marks seem to be more towards the end of dipstick compared to yours.
I’m not surprised that there are slight differences even within the same generation. I wouldn’t recommend doing anything that contradicts the owners manual.
I have a 2015 Santa Fe limited 6 cylinder watched your video.Very easy , how long did it take to do this transmission fluid job.
It’s pretty quick. The parts that don’t go fast are refilling the transmission and possibly warming it up to temp if it was done cold. Because of those things it may take 45 minutes or so start to finish.
@bennieaust thank you, wish I could do it myself but at least I have the knowledge to question the mechanic.
Does this not have a transfer case?
No, because it doesn’t even have a rear driveshaft.
@@bennieaust Wonderful. Also, what about the transmission filter? I know Toyota sells one. Is it not replaceable because it's a sealed system?
@ that’s correct it is a non-serviceable filter. fluid change only.
I've been having this problem for the past 2months with most mechanic unable to sort it out. I will now return to instruct them on changing this . I did some personal checks and found oil all over my oil sump. Thank you Thank you Thank you. This video is very helpful
You’re welcome!!
What about the filter?
Check out the video description for details on that.
I have a 2022 and Toyota says I have to replace the dang transmission filter every 30k mines at 39k I was just going to do the fluid.what are your thoughts?
Thanks man I called the dealership. They told me to replace the transmission fluid every 60,000 miles but would you be recommend doing it every 30,000 miles
@@samgage2294 This video does not cover changing the filter, but here is a link to a filter / gasket kit if that's the direction you want to go. In my opinion, if you change the fluid as recomended, you will not have to change the filter: amzn.to/48522VE

My 2015 IS was totaled in June. I found a mint condition garage kept 2012 LS for sale 134k mile for 13k and thought I was downgrading because of the age..boy was I wrong. I have driven a Saab..and Infiniti G35 and the IS but this is by far the best sedan I’ve ever driven. Thankful it does not have air suspension or AWD. Only complaint is the material on the arm rest and the glove box look dirty and I wish I could have them replaced. Enjoyed the video you were spot on
Thanks so much! Glad you are loving (mostly) you LS!
lol how on earth you think it'd be a downgrade
Thanks!
@@CoolCritter thanks so much!!
This was fantastic, thank you so much. Where does the air go when you pump the fluid into the trans? What torquewrench are you using?
Thanks! I added it to the description as well. Quinn 1/2" Drive Torque Wrench: www.harborfreight.com/12-in-drive-digital-torque-wrench-64916.html There is a vent on the transmission that allows air in when you drain it and air out when you fill it, as well as under normal operating conditions when the fluid expands and contracts with temperature changes.
Does the vehicle need to be completely level or can I get away with jacking up the front?
It is supposed to be level for that step. It’s an easy step, you could probably get away with dropping it back down and just reaching under the vehicle to pull the plug and drain the excess. Not much will drain out. Then you could reinstall the plug, lift it back up a little and torque to spec.
Great tutorial. Wish all videos were like this one.
Thanks!!
Great Video. I do have a question though, don't you need to actually drive the car in all gears for the fluid to circulate through? I feel like simply cycling through the gears while stationary might not do the job. Curious to know.
Thanks! All that is called out for is exactly what I do in this video. I couldn’t tell you the exact details of why, but that’s all they call for.
I appreciate the simplicity of how you explained things. Im surprised at the complaints from some people who prove they dont have enough experience to do this successfully.
Thanks for your comment! I agree, sometimes I think to myself that maybe they should just bring it in somewhere to have it done. :)
