How to Read the Smith Chart on the Nano VNA
When tuning antennas for a specific band, we often resort to using a SWR bridge and transmitting on several frequencies to find our resonant point. The Nano VNA gets around this by sweeping across the band at very low power and displaying both VSWR and impedance (using the Smith Chart display).
This video explains how the Smith Chart provides this information, saving you time in determining how to trim your antenna.

Icom IC-R8600 Advanced Scanning: Skip/Select/Program/Priority
Просмотров 8436 месяцев назад
In the last video, I described the process for programming frequencies into the R8600 Groups and Memory Channels, and starting a basic memory scan. Here, I discuss how to skip certain channels in a scan, how to scan only selected channels in a group, how to scan continuously from one frequency to another and how to set up a priority channel to interrupt whatever you're tuned to when a signal ap...
ICOM IC-R8600: Simplified Memory Programming and Scanning
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.6 месяцев назад
The Icom IC-R8600 is a powerhouse communications receiver, but lacking any band 'presets', storing frequencies in groups and channels becomes necessary. This radio covers 10 kHz to 3 GHz, so casually tuning around with the VFO knob would take forever to get from one end of the spectrum to the other! This first video covers the basics...more advanced memory storage and scanning coverage to follow.

Amplified Loop vs Ham Radio Tuned Antennas - Which is Best for HF Reception?

Indoor or portable preamplified loop antennas are convenient for indoor or portable longwave/medium wave/shortwave listening, but how do they compare on the HF ham bands? It was fascinating to connect the VNA to a manual antenna tuner in line to the antenna, you can twiddle the knobs and see the SWR waves go up and down as you manipulate the inductor and capacitors. I’m new at this and never used a manual antenna tuner before this. It would have been frustrating to operate the antenna tuner blind.

I bought an S-40B with some good potential off eBay about 10 or 12 years ago and spent some time recapping, aligning and generally getting it into what I consider excellent condition. I wound up replacing the toggle switches, one of which was broken. Amazingly, these were still available in their original form. Alignment is an art form. I have spent countless hours aligning everything from S-38s to Hammarlund SP-600s (48 adjustments in the RF section alone). My feeling is that dials were designed using a prototype chassis. Given the vagaries of parts control, they just don’t fit all the production units very well. Oscillator points should be adjusted about 10- to 20-percent in from each end of the band to get the best fit throughout the band. The frequencies specified in the alignment instructions should serve only as starting points. Once the main tuning was aligned as well as possible, I developed frequency graphs on the bandspread logging scale. An outboard crystal calibrator is helpful for this. I restrung the tuning and bandspread dials using 50-lb test, microfilament, braided fishing line. This is much better than regular dial cord, as it provides exceptionally smooth tuning with minimal slack or backlash. The bandspread on the S-40B lacks the nice flywheel present on the original S-40. My unit is also setup to plugin an optional outboard Heathkit GD-125 Q-multiplier. This improves selectivity. Many years ago, a ham buddy taught me how to tune single sideband using combinations of the sensitivity and pitch controls, and CW and AVC on/off switches. For tuning SSB as well as narrow bandwidths produced by the Q-multiplier, the main drawback of these old radios is stability. They drift significantly during warmup, and somewhat less thereafter. All things considered, the S-40, S-40A and S-40B were excellent cost-performance tradeoff options for hams and SWLs 70 years ago. Yours, sir, is a beauty and must give you lasting satisfaction in its restoration.

Why do so many of these radios still have muting while tuning when we know it can be disabled? Surely the manufacturers know that most shortwave listeners hate it when radios do this.

I know this is 1 year old but I hope you see my comment. Thank you very much for this video. I had the same issue you had. I did what you said and it fixed this problem. My SWR hardly flickers now. I had to make sure the split band was within the ham bands and I also turned the split function off. Both had to be done in my case. I have a random wire 35.5 ft antenna with 9:1 unun and common mode choke on the feedline near the antenna and transceiver. My antenna runs along the wall in my room. I know it is very compromised but now I know my SWR is under control and I might have a chance to talk to someone with the SWR under control. I am handicapped with arthritis and have a heart issue, that's why I have it inside. Makes it a little easier than outside. Thank you very much again for this video. It helped me very much. I have had some strong signals come through on my indoor antenna, too.

I clamped a ferrite core at the antenna coax end, reason, SWR kept changing when moving the feed line on the car. Once that was done, it stopped it's sensitivity of SWR change. Works great on 10M's.

    • @gabrielsierra6890

One trick is to ground the shield of the cable , so the metal of the car provides a good ground plane, and this is especially important of you are using an HT. The variation you are observing is because of a floating ground. If you don't want to ground, the ferrite method you used helps.

If you like old, heavy, and big radios... that supposedly look good...then you might like these old SX series Hallicrafters receivers... especially, if you think mass = class. Ok... I guess... for free... if you want something to hold the basement floor down. Otherwise... except for perhaps the sound (if that's your thing) any modern receiver will kill them.

  • @willthecat163
    @willthecat163 4 месяца назад

Lots of S-40 turn up... at least around here. (noting rare for sure... and not a great radio either.) I think it's mostly because of the Hallicrafters name. (for sure, there's an S-40, in more than a few basements, as ballast, to hold the floor down.) As for decal kits (or even cap kits) ... I think they sell a fair amount of them. It's not a rare receiver at all.

I think they should of thought about being able to attach the mic like other radios that you can just mount the faceplate and place the radio body under the sear or behind where you're sitting.
