Threshing Flail vs Longsword Sparring
Played around with some flail vs longsword, had a lot of fun. The longsword practitioner is still pretty new, so he had a lot of difficulty overcoming the reach disadvantage plus most blocks being worthless vs the flail head. Definitely a fun scenario and worth playing around with more!

Advanced Cutting - SoCal Swordfight 2023 Tier A longsword cutting final feat

    Mind if I ask about your mask. I saw your review from a year ago, do you still like it? The Cobra, I mean. I do western style fencing using steel weapons, some of us do such on weekends where head shots are allowed. The others are all using traditional masks, I am wondering how the cobra would hold up.

    • @HEMASimian
      @HEMASimian 3 месяца назад

      Hey! Yeah, it's still a great mask. I moved onto a different one because I had an opportunity to get a mask style that I prefer and is basically impossible to get made well anymore, so I jumped on that. If I didn't have this I'd definitely still be using the cobra. I know others who have been using theirs for quite a while now too and have had no issues.

    I have a few friends in my club in Serbia Belgrade and they are generally happy with them. They are mostly using it for sidesword and that is different story because of how you hold it. As far as the VB light saber and these gloves, they are really not meant for it. The grip on the VB light saber is just slightly longer (if at all) than a historic/real one was/is so there is no way a glove like this will fit. As you mentioned you have a complete guard and a light saber doesn't really hit that hard so the fingers are well out of the way and hidden. You only need hard "plates" on the glove on the outside of the palm for a saber like that. Gloves like these would probably fit well my VB "D guard" (heavy) saber since that one was made with heavier gloves in mind. I tried them and I personally find that the XL is to large but the L size is to small, but that is down to my hand size (standard 9.5 glove size).

    • @HEMASimian
      @HEMASimian 3 месяца назад

      yeah, if they're happy then that's what's important. I couldn't fit it even in my d-ring sabre, and with my sidesword I found hits to the fingers were too painful and high risk of injury so I have no interest in using them for that as well. Overall I just returned them, I have no use for them. My Gabriel gloves fit every sword guard I have and are way more protective & comfortable

  • @HEMASimian
    @HEMASimian 3 месяца назад

    something always worth being said, your mileage may vary and maybe these will work great for you. They just won't for me. Something I'll add, it's possible that my issue with not feeling enough articulation in the fingers to hold the handle properly may improve with breaking in the glove more. But that doesn't stop the amount of material pushing my pinky & index off of the handle and just the lack of protection in the fingers. I can't fit these in my sabre or rapier guards, I can fit them on my sidesword & messer guards, but the lack of being able to hold the handles comfortably & the lack of finger protection still makes me not interested in using these for those applications.

    Nice review (and written review), not much out there on this, so I was a bit sceptical making the purchase. Very glad i did, it is excellent. My one small issue early on is the rear plastic flap (definitely not its technical name haha) hitting the back of my neck / in between my sholders and moving then mask slightly if I look up. **a minor issue, dont hear me wrong** Looking at yours in the video, it looks like you may have removed the elastic clip that holds it down, so the flap can move freely, am I right? ...my one came with then Samurai Cat as well 🔪😄

    @CheerfulPessimist686 5 месяцев назад

    Great review, thank you. Looking into buying one. You should be getting a cut (erm, the good kind). A thought about noise issues: Maybe it's the sound frequencies that are the issue? I thought of this because of hearing a radio program discussing Pickleball and its godawful racket (ho!). Apparently the main issue there is the frequency of the sounds from the impacts of the paddle against the hard plastic ball. For those of us who have reached an age (if not reality) of relative maturity and done so while enjoying loud music, fireworks, firearms, our decreased hearing range might have an upside. Cf. high school kids using recorded mosquito whining for ring tones because adults can't hear it. How terrible would it be to wear a pair of earplugs inside the mask?

    • @HEMASimian
      @HEMASimian 5 месяцев назад

      After talking to more people about it, I think it just has to do with how much the person is around loud noises. I work in construction and have gone to concerts so I'm just very used to loud noises so it doesn't bother me. People who it did bother, usually have not been around loud noises a lot so it was more jarring for them. Earplugs could work, but then I would be worried about someone not being entirely aware of their surroundings and hearing people call hault or whatever on time.

    • @HEMASimian
      @HEMASimian Год назад

      I don't think so. I've been using mine very regularly since this video and I have no cracks or deformation in the plastic anywhere. It can be thin in areas but I haven't found that to be a problem at all. I think the biggest issue is the side of the index could use a bit more padding, the plastic being thicker wouldn't change much as there needs to be better absorption after the impact load gets spread from the hard surface.

    How is the inner glove secured to the gauntlet? I know they're riveted at the fingertips but is it just the bands holding them in place? I ask because I want to know how much effort is involved in replacing the inner glove if I ever needed to.

    • @HEMASimian
      @HEMASimian Год назад

      hey sorry for the late reply. We're just settling in from a 1,000km move. It does seem like the tips of the fingers of the underglove are mechanically attached to the tips of the fingers. However the palm portions are just attached via straps. the cuff fabric portion is sewn into the glove, and those are attached to the wrist plates via more loops & straps. It doesn't feel like it's completely un-replaceable to me, but it would be a bit involved I think.

    • @HEMASimian
      @HEMASimian Год назад

      the torso length issue? I think that was just a miscommunication with production where I gave them the torso length, and they took that measurement and applied the torso & skirt to match that length, instead of torso length + skirt being extra. I don't see that being a problem with standard, if you're going custom I would just double check. Though, hopefully by now that bug is out of the system on their end.

    • @HEMASimian
      @HEMASimian Год назад

      @@knighty6y744 due to the weight of the jacket I wouldn’t really call it agile, but that may be how you define agile. It has full range of motion in it though so your movements aren’t physically restricted. But I do get tired faster wearing this jacket compared to a lighter one. The length issue I feel was more of a mistake than a systemic issue. The plunderhosen are decent, they come with internal pockets to add foam for padding, but I personally took all that out because I find it was bulky and since the thigh is one of the biggest muscles in the body, I didn’t see the need. The range of motion in them are great, I’m planning on getting a review of them out at some point in the near future.

I'm looking at building a custom set of armor to be used to protect against multiple styles of weapons **fencing, longsword, halberd** How effective do you think this mask would be against non-fencing weapons, and do you have any recommendations on other armor parts or companies?

    • @HEMASimian
      @HEMASimian Год назад

      I'm not sure if any fencing helmet can really deal with proper halberd strikes as a powered cut from a polearm was meant to mess people up even in armour. So unsure about your goals about halberd there. The plastic would probably shatter I imagine, you'd have to go for a full on proper helm with suspension I suppose. Unfortunately my knowledge of gear suitable for more buhurt or Battle of Nations type stuff is very limited as that's not the area I train in. I would suggest finding communities in those area and ask for gear recommendations as they probably know better than I :)

    • @Swenthorian
      @Swenthorian Год назад

      Not effective. You NEED thick steel, *especially* if you're expecting halberd hits. The high weight of an actual steel helmet is part of what keeps you safe: it creates inertia that cancels out the forces of incoming weapons.

      The back hinges up plenty far enough to get it on with glasses. The main impediment would be the elastic back strap (like on a normal mask). If you can get a normal mask on, you can use one of these. Also, the mesh seems further away on this so probably more room for specs
