I failed a yellow belt test when I was a kid and told I could take it again in 6 months. However after a couple of weeks back in the studio the stigma of being the only student that failed coupled with the bullying and teasing of the other students and the instructors made sticking around unbearable. Plus since I essentially needed to start over anyway I just bailed to another dojo. Ironically, I heard the first gym closed down after three or four months so the net result would have been the same.

I stopped training for several years in taekwondo as a lower colored belt and I restarted from ground zero back in 2018/2019 and I'm currently a red belt. I say it depends on the situation and how much you remember, for example someone stopped training for a year, or two due to medical reasons, but still trains mentally (saying the actions of poomsae, watching videos about sparring and forms of different kicks, etc.) will still be a black belt to me and they'll start at black belt when they come back, or someone stopped for 10 years due to lack of motivation and haven't trained a single day after leaving but decided to come back, I would say they are a black belt and they can keep their black belt that they've earned through the years, but they would have to start back at square 1 and work their way back up and regain their knowledge.

Practice. 5 hours a day minimum. That's not all. A well practiced green belt can destroy a casually practiced black belt. There are very lethal moves and deadly force ensconced in the Green Belt poomse I practiced green belt level 5 hours a day for months. &h, that was weird. Started overdosing mems multi-vitamins because I was pissing white. No more yellow piss The most I practiced was 6 hours a day. That's Olympic level pursued for 6 years.

I was a first dan in Taekwondo at the age of 21. I tried to go back as a white belt 19 years later. Everyone insisted I put my black belt on. With that once a bb always a bb bs. I didn't last long. Everyone had high expectations of what I should be able to do because I'm a "black belt" meanwhile i physically can't do things they expect. I'm physically a white belt. Currently looking at other schools in different arts, I'll be keeping my martial arts background to myself when I find a new school.

In the school I am in, if a black belt hasn't trained in many years (in the same school), and comes back, then they have the option of retaining their black belt and then getting back up to speed, or going back to white belt and starting over. A few took the second option.

Depends on your system. Kukkiwon and the original Kwans require Year minus one for each Dan Grade. SO a 2nd Dan would only need 1 year as a 1st Dan to test, or a 6th degree would need 6 years to test for 7th.

Kukkiwon Taekwondo has a 10th dan, though it’s generally reserved as a posthumous award. Some of the smaller Taekwondo associations use that rank for living practitioners. More importantly though, the Kyu/Dan ranking system originated in the Judo and were standardized by the Japanese Ministry of Education in the early twentieth century. With slight variations, that system was adopted by the Okinawans in 1936, the Koreans in 1955 and the Chinese in 1998. Many Japanese martial arts, including Judo, use a tenth dan grading. They have also done so before Taekwondo ever came into existence, let alone adopted the ranking system that Judo developed and that the Japanese Ministry of Education established the perimeters for. So saying that tenth dan doesn’t exist or isn’t a legitimate ranking is at best style centric or only true in your branch of your specific style. At worst, it’s just being completely dishonest regarding the martial arts as a whole.

In the late 80s, I made it to sandan in Shotokan. Not long after that, my instructor quit because of politics, and in solidarity, I did the same. Now, at 71, I continue to train but attaining higher ranks has lost its value because of the politics involved. I have no regrets. As an instructor, I see that lack of discipline, dedication, and motivation as the main reason students rarely attain shodan level. It ain't easy, folks! Otherwise, everyone would have a black belt. My children started their MA training at 5 and 7, if we follow the progress plan, even the slowest one, they should be ready to do their 1st Dan exam when they are 11 and 13. However, our school allow only minimum age of 16 for the exam. So, when they reach their 1st Kup or Kyu and learn for 1 year at this level, they might quit this school and perhaps choose other MA. Perhaps a weapon based MA is not bad since in real life, often time weapons are involved in many fights from street fights until real war. The biggest "looser" here is the school itself. By delaying the Dan exam they will not have high Dan holders at the right optimal ages. Ideally one should reach 4th Dan in the beginning of their 20 because this is the best age of human. Because of this age delay most of grand masters who actually should teach the real form but cannot show the form by themselves because of physical limitation.

I'm used to calling that rank "junior black belt". I agree, it is good. The child isn't artificially barred from a symbolic achievement based on an uncontrollable factor. At the same time, being realistic, they're not given a marker that suggests they can fight an adult and win, when really they probably can't. In my experience, there's also one more difference, which is that some particularly dangerous aspects of techniques, like eye gouges, chokes, throat strikes, and so on are left out of children's training, to be filled in when they're older. That makes a material difference between the junior and adult black belt ranks.

Let me start by saying that I really miss Tae Kwon Do. I took Tae Kwon Do classes when I was little. I started over in college and I worked hard. I got to my red belt, that includes the intermediate belts between each solid color belt. I finished college and had to move back home before I was able to study and test for my black belt. There aren't any schools near where I live. I have looked. I have wondered if I would have to start over once I find a school. I have been trying to get the study guides from the school I was going to, but I can't log in with the info that they gave me. I can get back to reviewing and practicing. So, if I'm doing that on my own for awhile before finding a school, would I still have to start over at white belt?
