Brion Gysin's Dream Machine pattern being cut by the speedy Zund Cutter.
I used to work at a printing company and had the pattern for Brion Gysin's Dream Machine printed on eighth inch thick rigid plastic board then the task of cutting out the many shapes was left to the Swiss made Zund Cutter. The printing took less than five minutes, then there was perhaps 10 minutes of plotting out the shapes of the pattern. The cutting took less than three minutes. It turned out really well.

    Bruce you get a thumbs up for posting this - especially not being a big fan. I saw The band in Calgary as the opening act for Burton Cummings. I was about 20 and didn't really enjoy them. Maybe there is something in the lyrics "too young for the blues". At this moment in time (mid 50's), the First Decade Greatest Hits CD is one of my most played

    At 5:00, the stunning instrumental "the Choice Wife"; it's like "diamonds glinting in the sunlight" (to steal a phrase from a music critic writing about Django Reinhardt). Followed by "Just the Motion". I'd never heard "You're Gonna Change or I'm Gonna Leave" before; is that one of Richard's, or a cover? Continuing: Dont Let A Thief Steal Into Your Heart; Helpless and Slow; Rockin' In Rhythm; A Woman Or A Man?; Unlucky In Love; Don't Renege On Our Love; Backstreet Slide; Pavanne; Wall of Death; Walking On A Wire; Nobody's Wedding; an unfamiliar Cajun tune sung in French; Down Where the Drunkards Roll. With the band: Shoot Out the Lights; unknown; Night Comes In; Great Balls of Fire.

      Only just found this and have used your tracklist to quickly skip to personal favorites. Thanks for that. I will watch when I have time but for now "You're Gonna Change (or I'm Gonna Leave)" is a Hank Williams Snr song. "Helpless and slow" while containing those lyrics is called "Genesis Hall" & dates from his days with Fairport. Also there's "Man In Need" after "Nobodys Wedding".

    Just a quick reply to "cirkuspromoter": there was no rehearsal, no sound check with RT. We just hit the stage and completely winged it with, as Mr. Fish so accurately described, me yelling out chord changes to the bassist. I'd love to say it was my preoccupation with making sure the band knew the changes that made me solo with such, um, weakness....but I take full responsibility for it, as explained in my other post! A great memory, though I am pretty happy that I'm largely in the background' and with a beard that obscures me even further :D

  • @binderdave
    @binderdave 5 лет назад

    I still consider this as the yin and yang, the double-edged sword ("The Knife's Edge"?) of my professional years playing in bands. Two thoughts: Richard playing a totally unknown guitar, strung (as he said) "like telephone cables" and through an unfamiliar amp and no pedals....and yet, when he played his first chord, his first note, it sounded absolutely like RT. Proof that it's not in the gear; it's in the hands, the heart, the soul. Second: I was, at the time, wood-shedding RT a LOT. So, when he nodded at me to take a solo in "Night Comes In," I was MORTIFIED. Do I do a solo that demonstrates my 'shedding one of my heroes? That would be wrong. So, instead, totally flummoxed, I delivered one of the worst solos ever committed (now!) to a permanent document by me. Place a huge <GROAN> under this category. Still, it was a real thrill to share a stage with RT - and, of course, Bruce Wittet (who instigated this and is one of the only people - certainly the only one in Ottawa at the very least - who could pull this off with the right feel, the right, well, everything), the late, great Brian Rading (who knew none of RT's tunes and, yes, I was calling out chords but barring a couple of train wrecks, he acquitted himself with his usual simple, anchoring panache), and, of course, my friend Ian Tamblyn, in whose band I played for a good few years back. I only wish that I'd acquitted MYSELF better!

  • @tbrucewittet4139

    John Fysh: thanks for identifying Dave Binder. I thought I saw him lurking in the back with his Telecaster. I am so indebted to Tim Cutts and to one Bruce McEwen for posting this. I've played with some famous people but Richard Thompson is closest to my heart; he's got that north-country vibe that harkens to my 2nd generation Scottish background. I ensured that Ian Tamblyn's band (for which I drummed) got the opening slot at Barrymore's hall; and then approached RT (I knew him, barely, through my friend Dave Mattacks). I've looked for this for, well, what's 2019 - 1982? Thirty-seven years. I'd no idea anybody was videoing it. My guess is Simon Tissano (sp), Richard's road manager/engineer to this date or damn close. If it's Bruce McEwen then thanks; this was before everybody was a videographer armed with a cellular phone.
