How To Build Skis: The Pressing and Finishing Process at Folsom Customs
Hey, check it out! It's 10ish minutes of fairly raw ski building footage! If you've ever been curious about how skis are built, come watch Alex Gardiner of Folsom Customs in Denver, CO, work through the last few stages in the process. These guys make it look easy, but it's actually really hard. We've tried, and we suck at it.

2017/18 RMU North Shore 108: On-Snow Review
Very informative. I regret buying the kit now lol
In your opinion Would you choose the allplay or the joyride for an all mountain free ride One size fits all ski Like if you were going to go everywhere Trees bumps steeps groomers etc Thanks I know this is a tough question Thanks
Is the 2017 model still a good buy today (granted they haven't been used)? For an intermediate groomers-only skier.
I'm a piste-only skier who recently got into freestyle, looking for a Ski that would let me ski on groomers & be playful with it (switch/small jumps). Thinking the 1.0 is a reasonable choice?
File is for snowboarding to detune for park
Impressive!! How much pressure do you use in the press? Fun watching craftsmen at work.
Whoa, is that a hydraulic ski press? Awesome.
So basically no reason to buy the kit.
I really love the Eddie iron maiden skis I saw the end of the vid!
Why fiberglass and not carbon? It's not that much more expensive given the small area...
Carbon and fiberglass require significantly different core thicknesses, and carbon in particular needs additional vibrational dampening. It's like asking why cars aren't all built out of aluminum, (or carbon fiber) you can do it, but it isn't necessarily better.
حقا عمل جيد ونظيف ...هاذا من اختصاصي ولي في هاذا المجال خبرة طويلة
I just bought the kit to get started. Thanks for the tips!
Super useful, thank you!
wow, this was an extremely helpful and enlightening video for someone trying to figure out what to buy for start my own tuning kit (slash whether to buy prebuilt kits). Thank you!
Yeah thanks, this is the most long-form video we attempted when we had the business and I learned a lot from it. Would like to do more at some point, have been mulling bringing the channel back in some form and maybe eventually the shop as well. A lot of comments on this vid are valid, and honestly I should have included a "recommendations" section...while I think this kit is decent for someone just starting out and learning to tune at home, there are definitely other kits that can "grow with" your tuning skills a lot better. Whenever I have a chance to expand my home tuning setup, I'm going to do all of that thru RaceWax...
Really great review. Appreciate the overview 👍
can you review J ski escalator?
Mine fog up as soon as i put them on. I wear glasses underneath and they are always fogging up. :-(
the dakine kits stone isnt gummy at all! if anything its a deburring stone!
metal scraper use only for ptex
bastard file is only good for detuning the nose and tail.
Great video, thank you! Would love to see a snowboard wax/tune tutorial video if you have one?
how do u find the best scouring pad if u don't buy a full set
ive had my original dakine tune kit and red iron for over 20 years and still going strong.
Actual advise that works is to spit on the inside of the goggle wipe it all-over and wipe down. Yeah it's gross but it's real advise . Just saved you from watching this video lol . This applies to scubadiving as well
Great tips. My goggles stayed really foggy one day I was doing lots of hikings in the terrain park practicing jibbing. I sweat a lot and need a way to avoid these goggles from being foggy. They are anon sync .
Poor Dakine.....at least it's a nice bag...
what skis brand is the pair with the girl in?
Nice v
I use butcher knife on my board and it works wonderfully
Thanks for the great tips, how about pushing up the googles onto the front of the helmet, when at the bottle of the slope or waiting for the lift? Does that promote fogging or are the googles cooler away from your face?
I can’t find your website... can you link it?
Covered mostly everything. Tear salt, sweat, dry skin does dirty the inside lens -- and you just have to buy another pair of Googles or changeable lens. I don't trust running water on the inside of my lens, I want to. My next pair will be Smith as I learned their anti fog is more durable -- possibly can rinse under water with them.
Pretty informative video. I've been doing a lot of walks and find the goggles making a big difference. But when it's -25c with a windchill factor. Keeping the mouth and nose covered to prevent frost bite helps. I find that walking into the wind with my goggles is a plus. But the venting lets some of that cold air in needing a face mask is a must. But then that can also hinder the venting to prevent fog up. It's the walk home with the wind at my back and at times from the sides is when the fogging picks up. And eventually it turns to frost which naturally reduces visibility. All in all even the best of the best goggles will have fogging issues from time to time.
So the iron is mediocre, there's not enough wax and it's kinda crap anyway, there's a file you will never ever use, and a brush to clean it, which you will also never use. The edging tool is shit. The stone is okay but nothing great. 1 of the two scraping tools is useful the other does more harm than good. Why on earth would anyone buy this kit?
To sum it up, don't buy the kit unless you really need the bag ^^
lol I mean we didn't sell these things and I shouted out 2 different alternative vendors for better kits right at the beginning of the video...we just reviewed it because it's the most popular complete kit out there...

How would you compare these to the Atomic Bent Chetler 100’s?
Not really comparable, they are pretty different skis. Allplays lean towards park, and chetlers are more of a all mountain-powder ski
So in summary: - The iron can't regulate temperature - The wax block is too small - The gummy stone is too hard - The bastard file is a trap - The brass brush is too small for base brushing - The plastic and metal scrapers are fine - The edging tool is wussy - The scourer is kinda ok - The bag is well organised and big.
How do you think these compare to: Stormrider 95, Mindbender 99Ti, or Enforcer 93 or 100? 6'2" 180lbs, Park City/Alta home mountains. Already have something 110+ underfoot and looking for a fun daily driver that can handle snow, trees, moguls, steeps, but also occasional groomer
get Bent chetler 100s :)
@@OrangeSoda42 one of my least favorite skis I’ve demo’d, but could have been a bad tune? Anyway, pulled the trigger on 181cm Masterblasters and couldn’t be happier - one of the best skis I’ve ever been on
@@lorenroot4640 how do they feel at that size? Do they feel like they ski smaller than that? I’m debating which size for me. I’m pretty close to your size 6’3” 190+ and I’m looking for something everyday playful on the East coast.
@@NPow94 honestly they sort of blow my mind. Really one of the more damp and stable skis I've ever been on at this length. Prior to the Masterblasters, I would have said the Brahma 88's @ 180cm were the most damp, but these MB's not only surpass them, they add in the fun factor with the deeper rocker profile. So you can not only lay them over and carve trenches, but you can shut it down or pivot almost instantly. Admittedly it takes a bit to get used to skiing a touch more centered, but once you find that sweet spot, they're truly remarkable. I've also had them in boot-deep super light fluff (Alta), as well as 12"+ chop (also Alta), and both were handled with ease. I honestly think I'll get the 187's next season, though, just to up the speed limit that much more. Not sure I've answered your question, but I'll try and sum up with how I would approach it: if you're a strong skier that skis at least 50% groomers, then I'd probably opt for the 187cm. I rarely hit above 45mph, and for me the 181cm handles those speeds no problem. I also spend more than half my time off-piste, and I really like the maneuverability of the 181's. But at your size, if you're a strong skier, I think you'll be able to maneuver the 187's just as easily is my guess. If you're not looking to go mach speed all the time, ski a lot of bumps and trees, then I'd probably recommend the 181's. Hope that helps!
So, the point was not to buy a kit? Ok, I get it. Thanks
Everyone's needs are different. I bought this kit way before I really knew how to tune so I've made a lot of changes to it. It's an ok starting point but if I were buying a whole new tuning setup today I'd definitely get a different one.
No secure bar on the lift??
i would like to get into ski touring too. would this ski fit the task? thanks
The Escalator is designed for that now in their lineup
So basically: Don't get the kit, buy the things you need separately
Weird. We do lots of sledding. I have 4-5 goggles with lots of different lenses. I literally put my new Oakley airbrakes on and instant fog. No idea why. They were dry and unused for that day. Any thoughts? It was about 10* and clear skies out.
Can you describe why you guys don’t like flat camber for all mountain? I’m guessing you’re talking about a ski like the BC Damien?
Less grippy and springy than camber, have to work harder to keep it on edge and under control, generally less power than a ski with camber unless you get a super stiff one, but even then they suffer from a less responsive "feel". Generally flat camber can be good for real soft conditions but we don't typically recommend a full flat camber ski as an all mountain daily because they're just not as good in firm snow, period.
How you tried the swix snowboard wax kit
Just ordered the 2018/2019 2.0
Great review!!
Oh my ! 😕? The big file. "Bastard file" is used to sharpen and keep your scrapper in good clean working order. Also to use on repairs, for both the board and edge repair. You use the tool that holds it at a 90 degree for your scrapper. You don't normally put your edge at that angle, do you? (Well you can. But...). That's why the edge tool is not made at that angle. Come on kid. You even said "SOME SORT OF FILE" WHEN YOU WHERE TALKING ABOUT THE PLASTIC SCRAPER. Funny guy?
Ok just one more. Really? You said - "You can't damaged or dull your edges with a Gummy Stone." THATS A MAIN REASON FOR THE GUMMY STONE. YOU CAN TAKE IT UP ON THE MOUNTAIN IN THE LITTLE POUCH THEY CAN COME IN. Then you use it to dull your edges. If you may want a little less bite for butter slides on a snowboard or skis (yes they do). Or use it for burrs, so you don't get hung up on a park rails. Beginners it can be good so they don't catch an edge as easy. (Just a few examples) come on kid?
I've always used a purpose built scraper sharpener or some kind of bench grinder to keep scrapers sharp. I guess you could use the bastard file for this but it seems like it would be a pain in the ass to free-hand it in that way. Anyway my main point is that I've seen a lot of people try to use the bastard files included in these kits on their edges without a file holder, and I just wanted to warn people not to try that. If I said anything contradicting myself I apologize, we don't use scripts when we make these videos and sometimes I'll accidentally step on my own points.
@@avantalpine8075 it was just funny. You said. "Or some kind of file" right after you had the file in your hand. And whoever you got that file holder from. I bet that's what they used it for. People who buy thoes kits generally don't have a bench grinder. And it's not that hard to take off 1/16' or less off of some plastic with a file. Keeping it at a 90 angle takes a little finesse but is still not hard. Your all good. Just funny.
@@ck2t528 Yeah they include one in this kit, I think that's my biggest issue. It's basically an invitation for novice tuners to fuck something up on their skis. I'll try using it to sharpen a scraper soon and see if I can get into that. Before I had a scraper sharpener I just used a piece of scrap 2x4 wrapped in sandpaper. And I missed your comment about gummy stones. The harder ones will take an edge down a bit, but if you use a soft or medium density stone they really don't round it off at all, so those are good for polishing surface rust between tunes. I think I mentioned this in the video but honestly haven't watched it in a while...I know I made that distinction in one take but it may have gotten cut out.
@@avantalpine8075 Yeah i agree , when some people say to me they just tuned their skis or board and bragged they did it themselves , I ask what did they use , and yip they say oh yeah just a steel file. Yip scraper sharpener is way easier than using the file
what's the difference between CT 1.0 and 2.0
The 1.0 is more park oriented
which skis are the ones in the vid because the ct 2.0 2019 looks not the same.
The year and model of ski are literally the title of the video...
