It just makes me chuckle seeing these comments complaining that the boxer is slow and compliant when the Aikido instructor is TALKING and moving slow to demonstrate what he's talking about. You can't teach and explain at full speed. Full speed is not the purpose of what he's doing in this video. Every sport in the world, from MMA to boxing to tennis to badminton has periods where the person teaching is moving slow because they are explaining what's going on. What, you guys think that boxing classes are full speed 100% of the time during instruction? Yeah right. Typical keyboard warriors.

Nage, huh... Good information. Jeet Kun Do in a way refers to this as "Telegraphing." I'm a strange case as far as Martial Arts goes. I've learned a lot, and have experienced many things. My stance however has been something I've questioned. Where does it root from? A mixture of the many things I've learned and utilized... I am dominant right hand/foot. I lead with my left, and movements mostly revolve around sidesteps/shifts in stance/evasive steps. Watching this video has helped me realize a lot of my tendencies are Aikido based as far as my stance/movement go. I have never heard of Nage until i began researching Aikido. I prefer this definition over the Telegraphing not because of the *action* taken after predicting the line of attack, but because of the idea behind the stance being *powerful* and *balanced* after the movement to evade has been made. Thank you for sharing.

Dude, he'll just take your leg. Aikido is an anti-weapons system. it's not great against other empty hand striking arts because there's too much margin for error.

  • @peterclarke7240

Absolute nonsense, unless you're so swift you might as well be running rings around them. Muay Thai is all about dominating with overwhelming force. They will see you moving far faster than you can actually move your body, and they will simply punch you. When was the last time you took a blow to the head? Also, your techniques require them to miss- the first thing a Thai boxer will do is weaken your legs, and their kicks HURT. As soon as one connects, you won't be moving fast. Don't get me wrong, I believe Aikido COULD work, but I don't think this is how. There's way too much margin for error.

I did aikido for 10 years and was a 2nd degree Blackbelt and in my opinion I was just beginning in to learn aikido. The first few years need to be at that slow speed to learn muscle memory. But after that I think higher speed practice is necessary and timing is key if you enter late you are getting hit. You almost need to guide them into what attack you want. I do remember as a 1st degree black belt at the beginning of class my sensi called me over and asked me to strike her. I did the slow leave it out there punch, and she said no hit me for real full speed. So I did a full speed punch to the gut. I don’t know for sure where she went but I ended up on my back after full break fall and she was maybe 120 pound women. It takes a long term investment to learn aikido, but in my opinion it is worth it.

Actually sensei you are wrong. You can not hope to catch a fist. You should try elbow control and use ikkyo and break his arm then throw to dispose of the body. If you aim for wrist he will snap back fist and you are left grabbing air or fist will slide through hands. If you grab elbow and he pulls back your grip slides and catches his wrist. Do not square up with uke but try to side step and enter by meeting wrists or use left hand tegatana to deflect with soft pulling action and right hand to catch. This would be a switch off as similar to various waza where you switch hands. Slightly different from normal practice but all the same principles of redirection, off balancing, and so on. I like to use sokemen to throw after using hand parrying.movements. 1. Get offline 2. Use left hand blade to blend and redirect uke punch. 3. Raise right hand and catch uke wrist. 4. Step in while pulling uke arm straight. This off balances uke slightly. Step in while turned sideways. 5. Use left arm to brush up uke chest bend uke backwards. Pulling his arm with right hand while executing throw with left arm helps get uke asymmetrical. 6. You can hold uke in limbo this way. He is trapped and can not counter or resist. If you let go he will fall. 7. Complete throw by stepping forward and cutting down with left arm and letting go of uke wrist. 8. As you were standing sideways stepping in requires moving back right leg forward.letting go of wrist as you cut you step and as you step your right hand comes forward. You finish with the feeling of ending in geadan catching exercise with hands together fingers making a triangle. I never touch hands or worry about the finishing pose but doing so makes the waza look and feel more classical. There are abridged versions to this. I call this sokemen nage for side escape. This differs from sokemen that looks like a breathing throw or a throw done inside uke guard. You want to move offline putting yourself outside ukes guard and parry then catch uke wrist. The parry has a mawashi uke feel to it. Do not chop uke wrist but turn arm hand in circular motion as you raise it so that edge of hand hits at angle as if pulling in. This makes the shuto uchi redirect instead of chop and hurt. This is smoother than chopping and blends nice. The right hand simply comes up and catches. From wrist control you could move in and complete sokemen or you could catch elbow and do ikkyo. If he resists ikkyo flow to nikkyo, he he resists this flow to sankyo. From wrist control you can do any waza. You can use this setup and take it further. If you are holding his right wrist this impairs his left punch. If he is able to punch with the left because you choose to hesitate you can very easily catch his left wrist. You end up with his arms crossed like jujinage. You can tenkan 180° and throw him with jujinage, you can tenkan and throw him with shihonage ura, if uke left arm is above right you can step forward and throw with tenchinage, if his left arm is below an awkward catch but you can step back and tenkan to throw with tenshinage that way. These are just the bunkai from 'peace' katas from karate. The katas are the jujitsu throws from aikido. Kata tells how to setup and enter and aikido is the 2 person sparring/working kata forms. The throws are as advertised so this is just aikido. I mention karate because describing online is difficult and have multiple points of reference is beneficial. I do Aikikai at the ymca.

Aiki techniques work against boxing and other sport fighting styles outside the ring the problem with MOST, not all Aikido people is the same problem many CMA practitioners have, they don’t train with full contact and they don’t have practice experience with other fighting styles, Akido people that do can fight. I know law enforcement, military people and some bouncers that regularly use thes techniques, just embrace the fact that you will be hit and get used to it.

Predators quite often prefer to seize their moment when the target is in extreme close quarters environment: elevator lift, subway car, choke points, alcove, work closet, restroom stall, bus, backseat of a vehicle, between parked vehicles. This prevents the target from "maintaining distance", "using footwork to create distance" or "using evasive action". If a man gets arrested for using self defense (very common) he shall be incarcerated in jail where extreme close quarters inside a cell or shower stall is where most combat occurs. Predators often don't want to chase their target.

Aikido is the most beautiful art next to tai chi. Many elements of the art like joint manipulation and movements off the centerline are definitely applicable to modern combat. The understanding of your opponent's energy as well as your own is paramount in the internal arts. The traditional approach to training and the traditional application of these arts will not hold up in modern combat. If you know what I just stated, then you can continue with your Aikido studying while also learning how to box, kick box or MMA or whatever gets you ready for street encounters. Supplement your training, dont be literal is what I am saying. This is my humble opinion after 27 years of martial arts and 20 years of law enforcement. God bless train hard!!
