i LOVED mexican gothic, it really blew my mind and got me even more obsessed with mushrooms. i've had a lot of these books on my tbr like slewfoot, the changeling, what moves the dead, and kindred, but you really sold me on silvia moreno-garcia's silver nitrate since cults are prob my favourite trope and i loved her prose. Also !!!! i am the millionth comment saying this but i love your passion and energy. glad i clicked this from my recommendations but as a fellow torontonian english major, i have to stop myself from bingeing the rest of your vids rn instead of studying for exams 😭

Why does nobody talk about Lets Go Play At The Adams. Compleatly overshadowed by The Exorcist. Definatly worth the read.

Ghost stories are my thing, I don’t really find other subjects in the horror genre all that interesting. I am about half way thru The Silent Companions not even interested enough to finish it. Don’t get the love for that one. Tender is the Flesh was disturbing, but for me mainly because the writer had to have done some major research in factory farming and all I could think about it while reading it was the horror that millions of animals go through every day.

Hi, I just sub to you, I'm an indy horror writer, and I was wondering if you do ready indy horror. My book has a few booktube reviews, and they all love it. Also if you are looking for more horror to read I recommend anything from James Herbert, he's my fave horror writer.

The Silent Companions is on my night stand right now. When reading the Shining, I was in my 20s, still living home but alone in the house on a dim fall afternoon, sitting in a chair that divided the den from the dining nook/kitchen/back door, and I got so scared I had to switch chairs to one that was backed up to the wall. Great experience! I DNF'd Northanger Abbey and can't get into any Jane Austen...maybe I'm missing something? I adore Jane Eyre!!

Another weird mushroom horror I recently read was Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman. Not necessarily a great book by any means but an interesting take on the afterlife.

Ok, so you're a fan of Octavia Butler and T. Kingfisher, you love Nettle and Bone and Slewfoot and mushroom stuff and gothic horror.. We seem to have very similar taste , so I definitly have to check out some of these books that I haven't read yet! :D

I liked stolen tongues, it gave me a couple shivers and it was fun to read, but it went a little to hard to fast for me

Have you ever read Jeremy Ray short horror? I think he’s excellent, and they truly are very short, and also includes micro stories in the beginning

“Tender Is The Flesh”, I haven’t read that one, but I know it’s very similar to “Meat” by Joseph D’Lacy which was published in 2008. I gotta say, absolutely vile. It didn’t turn me off of eating meat, but I certainly struggled with my conscious while eating red meat I did LOVE “The Hallow Places”

I love Jane Eyre. Finally read it this month, then read a witchy re-telling, Salt & Broom by Sharon Lynn Fisher... so good!! I'm glad I have a copy.. the cover is so cool too. Also just checked out another Jane Eyre inspo-book from the library.. but this one is called Mr. Rochester since it's from his POV. Sorry don't remember the author but wanted to at least mention it.. oh! also on my TBR is another Jane Eyre re-telling, Strange Unearthly Things by Kelly Creagh.. oh another one! also read another Jane Eyre-esque gothic novel, The Secrets of Hartwood Hall.. this is a fun mysterious one.. sorry don't remember the author of that one either but wanted to mention all these in case y'all were wanting more Jane Eyre coded reads. 😊

Re: mushroom horror - I always assumed “A Voice in the Night” by William Hope Hodgson was the oldest story in this genre, but are there any that pre-date the 20th century? Anyway, cool to see this niche but creepy sub-genre getting more coverage - the research project sounds cool!
