Ben's Exotic Florida
США
Добавлен 19 авг 2023
Hey everyone, welcome to exotic Florida! I'm Ben and live in Boca Raton, Florida. I love eating exotic food and especially all the different fruits our world has to offer. When I moved to Florida in 2017, my passion for eating exotic fruit turned into a passion for growing exotic fruit. I now have a small backyard tropical fruit garden, which I'll be sharing, as well as other exotic foods that I can get my hands on here and maybe some other cool stuff going on here in South Florida. Please subscribe to keep up with my exotic Florida!
I Tried Canned Cod Liver
Cod liver is some of the healthiest food you can eat, with insane amounts of omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin A, and vitamind D, among lots of other vitamins and minerals, lots more than anchovies or sardines. But the big question is, is it good?

Backyard Mango Tree Update - January 2025
Просмотров 27921 час назад
Down here in Boca Raton, Florida, January is usually when the first signs of mango season begins as the flowers begin to bloom. My alphonso, pickering, coconut cream, and honey kiss are all begining to bloom and I'm hoping for another great mango season this summer!
How Bad is Canned Jackfruit?
Просмотров 250День назад
Canned jackfruit usually comes in the unripe kind to be used as a pulled meat substitute to be smothered in bbq sauce, but occasionally you can find the ripe sweet kind like this. Check out what I thought of it.
Is Canned Longan Good??
Просмотров 5814 дней назад
Longan is a cousin of the lychee and rambutan which is popular in Asia but can be grown here in South Florida. I tried fresh longans a while back which I thought were ok, good but not nearly as good as lychees or rambutans. But when I saw them in a can in my local Asian grocery store, I figured I'd see what they're like!

Public Fruit Orchard!? - Arboretum at Constituion Park, Deerfield Beach, Florida

This little municipal park in Deerfield Beach has a beautiful hidden arboretum with a pretty impressive collection of exotic tropical fruit trees. This park is only a few miles from my house and I never knew it existed until just recently!
Picking and Tasting My First Kari Starfruit (Carambola)
Просмотров 2402 месяца назад
I bought this tiny newly grafted tree only 10 months ago and it already produced the first full sized starfruit (aka carambola). Starfruit trees are incredibly precocious and heavy producers, and mine seems to be no exception. This is definitely at the top of the list of trees that produce lots of fruit fast. Can't wait to see how this continues to perform!
Backyard Mamey Sapote and Sapodilla Trees Update!
Просмотров 4852 месяца назад
Sapodilla and mamey sapote are cousins, both in the sapotacea family although they taste very different! Sapodilla tastes like apple pie and mamey sapote tastes like cooked pumpkin. Both of my small trees are completely full of flowers so I can't wait to see what happens in the coming months!
BUC-EE'S - The Best BBQ Ever...at a GAS STATION?

Buc-ee's are located at interstate exits throughout the southeast, mostly in Texas. I highly suggest that if you ever see you, you get off the highway and stop right away. It's one of the best places ever. Seriously.
Is Canned Soursop Good?? (Guanabana)
Просмотров 5502 месяца назад
I never thought soursop could ever come in a can but I was at the local Asian grocery store and there it was. One of the most interesting an unexpected fruits to come in a can, check out to see what I thought of the soursop (aka guanabana).
Canned Mangosteen is Awesome!
Просмотров 5793 месяца назад
I recently tried mangosteen pudding which was absolutely terrible, but to be fair it was mostly chemicals. Now I try canned mangosteen which consists simply of mangosteen, water, and sugar, and I had a very different experience!
Is Dried Sweet Potato Good?

I saw this package of dried sweet potato at the Asian grocery store and figured I'd give it a try. Strange, not great, but not terrible...
Mangosteen Pudding - Do Not Buy!
Просмотров 1713 месяца назад
Mangosteen is one of the best tasting fruits on Earth so when I saw these mangosteen flavored pudding cups at the Asian grocery store I figured I had to try them. I couldn't have been more disappointed. Stick around because I bought another mangosteen product which was much better.
Transplanting my Jaboticaba Tree - Full Update!
Просмотров 2523 месяца назад
I recently included the jaboticaba on my list of fruit trees that I don't recommend growing in south Florida. While it's not the worst choice, it's still been giving me some trouble. I've now had it in a total of three different places in the ground and two different times in pots. I think the key is finding its sweet spot. I'm hoping this last move is going to be its sweet spot and will start ...

Flamingo Road Nursery - Davie, Florida - Full Tour
Its not a Alphonso my dear
Sorry but you're wrong. It is an alphonso.
Water or no?
Love the Jewish pride!!!!
I'm too afraid to eat it. I have seen a few other canned fish items that I have wondered about, but I know my tastes aren't mature enough to try. I still eat chicken nuggets 😂 I like seeing exotic things though. Things I have wanted to try, or will never try, or just curious about what it looks like and what someone thinks about it. I'm obsessed with plants and fruits, but I enjoy learning about other things too. 👍
Your mangos are looking great mate well done
I just received two trees from this website that are barely 12 inches and they sold them as Xtra Large trees. I paid $120 for each. Buyers beware
So happy to see your Pickering doing well! What an impressive group of trees!
Your Alphonso is so wild yo. Yard looks great!!!
I was thinking the same thing!
Put some salt on the star fruit! It takes them from okay to pretty good. I would love to get one of those banana pups if you still have some, where are you located?
I’m a new subscriber I enjoyed your videos, I’m also in south Florida my problem is with iguana. I’m on a lake big problems my fur buddy helps but still disgusting.
Amazing job Brah!!!
Great job Brah!!! Continue with the great work!!
Impressive growth in 2 years time!
Which carambola variety do you reccomend. I love some but others are too sour for me. I barely have room for another tree and want to plant a good one. Great vid. Thanks for posting.
I haven't tried enough varieties to give an answer. Mine is a kari which I've read great things about.
@ thanks for the reply. Ironically someone else commented on one of your post and recommended Arkin. I bought one yesterday. Also picked up a fig and passion fruit per your pinned vid. Keep growing.
I have fruit trees from Spilkes and am sorry to watch the grove slowly turn into townhouses.
Sad
😮😅😂😂
Do they eat the quat?
Why do I feel like I can't repeat the name of it without offending someone!😮😊😅😂
So you can spray sulfur on open flowers?
I do believe so
Loqat have issue drop alot and due to rain mess on the floor. Very limited life.
Too much moisture?😮😅
😂
Too much moisture?
You wasting space. Put a mango in there!
No! We're doing good right now, don8be cumquate!😮😊😅😂❤
😂
No mangoes! They overcome the quats!
Ya. The space needs clearance for other things!❤
Well, I suppose red-bellied woodpeckers gotta eat too!
How big is your property if u don't mind me asking??
I'll act the part of the snobby fig connoisseur and tell you this: Brown Turkey and even Black Mission are good, vigorous rootstocks lol. Try grafting or even rooting these figs: Texas BA-1 De La Roca Any of the Coll de Dame series (blanc, noise, roja, gegantina, citation, etc....) There's a whole lot more varieties than these, but these are great top-notch and should take the Florida weather better than most.
That White Sapote is bizarre! The only thing I can think is that the nursery it came from over-fertilized it and it flowering prematurely? I have a 3 year-old White Sapote that I have grown from seed; it's about 8 feet tall and it has never flowered yet!
Quite interesting! Will have to check this out!
Nice to see your sugar belle is growing good. keep it fertilized and it wont disappoint.
It is my first time on your channel and I have just subscribed. Thank you so much for sharing. Your back yard is beautiful. Keep up the good work. All the best on this journey
Thank you!
I'm getting something like this going down here in Southwest Ranches. Are you in Broward?
I'm in Boca Raton but close enough
I just subscribe to your channel.
Ben... please let us know what region of Florida you are in. As someone who has lived and gardened all over the state of Florida for the past 30 years, I can say with certainty that success for tropical and nontropical plants varies widely depending on the locale. Secondly, I have also discovered the hard way (😊), that a popular brand at the Florida nurseries misleads consumers regarding zone labeling. In other words, often a zone 9 plant should not be sold below the Georgia state line bc it won't survive. LOL. Thanks for your help!❤
@topaz3468 I'm in Boca Raton, which is pretty far south. I've had a weather station in my backyard for the last 4 years and have recorded a few nights a year in the 40s and two times in the last 4 years it hit the 30s. Regarding labeling, I wouldn't trust that at all. You should do your own research before deciding what to plant. I've made plenty of those mistakes before, I have a whole video about the many failures I've had.
What you want to do with the atemoya, is what I do with mine. When pretty much all the leaves are gone sometimes next month, cut those two branches by half...this will push more branches which you want for more fruit production in the future. And it will look better than having it look scrawny. In regards to the White Sapote (typical Lara super small super expensive 😂) I would not have put it the ground yet. Any plant at that size will struggle and take much longer to get to andecent size. You want to keep those in half shade or mostly shade until they are ready to be moved from like a 3-7 gallon. You are going to have more success keeping all small plants in pots for couple of years, mostly shade...
@@AmelEAV thanks for the tips!
I agree I have my Campbell white sapote in a 7 gal. It’s too small and skinny to go in the ground. I want it to grow more length and width in the pot before I put it in the ground.
Is it the real Alphonso or the zill Alphonso?
@SeraphimCherubim I believe it's a real alphonso as I recall the tag only saying "alphonso" and the fruit have all the characteristics of a real alphonso. Unfortunately when I got it 6.5 years ago right after moving to Florida, I had no idea about all the different varieties so I didn't know to look into the different varieties. All I knew at the time was alphonso was considered the king of mangoes.
Alphonso is one the best tasting variety of mangoes just love it man and tree ripen fruit tastes heavenly 🤤🤤🤩
@@Megatron_20 exactly, and the ones my tree produces live up to that
In that nice yard I’d have at least 60 trees and 40 of them would be mangos and avocados
@@Randomguyonyoutube89 lol I'm not really interested in avocados as I actually prefer the store bought Mexican Hass over any Florida varieties. And I have two little kids and want to keep the middle yard for them. If it weren't for the kids I'd have the entire yard filled with trees
Your Younghans Gold white sapote is too small and skinny to hold fruit. My Campbell white sapote is the same size.
Yeah that's pretty obvious. I'm just not sure what to do with all those buds it's producing. Pick them off or just let them be?
Try it in the Mexican fruit punch that’s usually made during Christmas and it’s a delicacy 🤤🤤🤤
Amazing Brah!!!
Nice tree, Ive had good success planting them in ground in full sun. I amend the native soil with about 20 cubic feet of peat moss. They will go chlorotic in sandy alkaline soil, so best to mix in peat prior to planting
In Mexico we use them mostly in a punch for Christmass, more than eating them alone. When eaten alone, the best ones are when they are fully ripe; they are also eaten in a solution of water and sugar (almíbar).
@@trinolopez7809 interesting!
Did they have coconut palms? And if they did how big were they?
@maddoxgardening I showed everything they had that day but I have seen coconut Palms before, not much bigger than a sprouted coconut. FYI coconuts sprout extremely easily so it's not even worth buying a plant, just throw a coconut on the ground and wait til it sprouts. That's what I did
Intriguing
Problems exist in South Florida growing fruit trees, but the more you do, the more experienced you get. My advice - join some fruit club and you will learn a lot as I did when I moved to FL from VA and basically didn’t know anything about growing fruit trees. I learned a lot. In what area of South Florida do you live. I can recommend you some clubs...
Noni has to be one of my least favorite fruit for sure. It is awful. It h health benefits. Let me know if you wanna be brave enough to try one. Lolol
@@snailsgarden3055 good to know!
Yoo no way I gotta give you a nice black sapote to try for sure. Didn't know you never tried it
@@snailsgarden3055 for sure!
Thanks for showing this park. This will be on my bucket list.
Rinse , water , salt, boil 😢 you ate it straight from the can 😬😬
That is an awesome place. I like seeing how large the trees and plants get there. I can't wait until my loquats start making fruit. I love them. They have them planted around at a few parks and in some of the wooded, wild areas around me. I have no shame and sit under them at the park and eat the fruit while everyone watches me.
Haha nice!
I just bought one this morning in Ft Pierce Fla at Weatherbee Nursery, three Gallon size for 44 bucks. Its about three and a half feet tall now. Ill add it to my collection of 38 other varieties. I hope it does good!
That poor tree. Just no good spot for it.
@@littlegreen5845 it's doing much better now in it's new home on the side of my house!
Hey how has it worked out here in Florida?
