Putting a Heathkit SB-101 Parts Rig Back on the Air
This Heathkit SB-101 transceiver came into my clutches as a woebegone parts rig. And you know, there’s something sad about a parts rig - cannibalized for more worthy radios - that made me want to bring this one back to its former glory. This video documents the process from initial unboxing, through various troubleshooting steps and finally to full operation.

Neutralizing Finals on the Heathkit Transceivers
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 месяца назад
Neutralizing the finals is an important final step in any transceiver restoration. AB2RA explains it better than I can: wireless-girl.com/Projects/AMTransmitters/Neutralization.html The manual shows you one way to do it, but if you've got an RF probe and a VTVM, this is the more accurate way to go. Here's a link to the instructions in the Heath Service Bulletin: drive.google.com/file/d/1K4H9xnO...

Heathkit Tube Socket Replacement
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
Now and then you need to replace a worn tube socket on an old SB/HW-100/101. And per Murphy's Law, it's usually located on the RF board, requiring surgical intervention to get to the pins underneath. Here's how I do it. I'm using a desoldering wick, but there are of course other ways of going about it. Follow for more exciting how-to videos on my N5OLA Restorations channel. I rarely check the c...
Restoring a Heathkit HW-22 Single Bander
Просмотров 8 тыс.3 месяца назад
If you were a ham in the late 60s you might have had one of these babies bolted under the steel dashboard of your 1965 Ford Falcon. These are marvels of compactness, putting out a solid 100W while weighing hardly anything. Heath brought out three models: 80m, 40m and 20m. In this video, I'm restoring the 40m version, the HW-22. This rig did not pose too many challenges, apart from a filament sh...

Heathkit HW-16 Teardown and Rebuild

The Heathkit HW-16 transceiver (1967-1976) makes a great restoration project. It's not a complicated rig, the PC board is simple and nicely organized, and the chassis can really sparkle when stripped and treated. Most of these rigs are in woeful condition, spending years (decades) in barns, sheds and closets. Given the relative simplicity of the circuit, troubleshooting is fairly straightforwar...

Picked up this 1960s-era vacuum tube voltmeter from Goodwill online. What a mess! A battery had been leaking for 30 years, leaving the components covered in acid residue. The cabinet was beyond redemption, or so it seemed. This video follows the steps I took in bringing it back to life, including component testing/replacement, cabinet treating, decal application to the front panel, etc. I have ...
Bringing a Heathkit SP-600 Back from the Grave
Просмотров 93110 месяцев назад
This quick video covers the steps I used in restoring a SP-600 that I picked up at an estate sale. These were designed with the speaker mounted to plywood, which has a tendency to degrade over time. Many are stored in garages and other non-temperature-controlled environments where they rot away. I'll go through the steps involved in restoring the cabinet as well as replacing the plywood bezel.

Thank you for this nice video.I am also heathkit minded,i got a several heathkit sb's too.sb 100 sb 101 sb 110 sb 301 sb 303 and more.Thank you.
Really dig your channel, Will! Your shack is like the Mayo Clinic for those lovable green boxes from Benton Harbor. ;-) Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the community. Having just adopted a HW-16, your tip about removing the red wire from the power level pot versus the tube base makes the neutralization process much easier. Look forward to more videos and hope to QSO some day soon. Best 73s de Mark - N9AK (dit dit).
Beautiful restoration, though I would use a style of potentiometer as close to the original as possible. The Bourns pot will work very well though.
I am halfway through doing mine. It’s one I built in 1968 for my HW-22A. After 56 years I figure it was past time to replace the capacitors. When I first turned it on in 1968 at least one of the electrolytic capacitors blew their guts out! Heathkit sent me new ones and that was the last time I had any trouble with that power supply. I worked a few stations with my HW-22A recently and decided I was pushing my luck too much, so I bought the kit like you have.
Sorry for the silly question, but do you leave it at 170F for 20 minutes on Bake or Broil setting? Just curious.
Hi Will, great videos. Have a HW-101 & a SP-600 coming to me that I’m going to restore. What brand/color black do you recommend for the transformer? Flat or matte? Thanks!
Nice job Will! I have an SB 600 and got as far as cutting the new piece of plywood but the speaker is non-working so I’m looking for a replacement. I don’t care if the actual speaker is original since you can’t see it. By chance do you have a recommendation? 73! Thanks for doing the video.
Thanks!
I tried rebuilding my Heathkit SB-220 in really bad shape and did the same cleaning technique. Broiling for 30 minutes at 350 didn’t do well. It was definitely no longer dry though. Now all the parts fit in one Zip-Lock bag. Probably should have tried “Bake” instead.
I remember when my fathers kit came out of the box. Can not remember how long it took, but we'd dispensary into the basement every night after super and worked on putting it together. Still remember after we got it done and built an antenna for it his first contact was into Japan. He was some exited. I still had it about 20ish years ago and it still worked. But we got broken into one weekend while we were away and they stole it. Never got it back.
TNX for the video. For easy probing of the RF signal at the output of any HF TRx you can use a PL259 (Male) to dual SO-239 (Female) "T" adapter/connector. Insert it between the TRX output SO239 connector and the coaxial cable which goes to the dummy load, then the remained free SO239 port of the T adapter can be used for probing. GL & 73!
"Parts Rig" ? what does that even mean?
I know it's an accepted cleaning but I can't get over the trauma when soapy water is sprayed on electronics. Thanks.
Szép munka volt!
I know that a good bath is typical clean-up for old gear but I'll never get over the tremors I feel when they're flooded with soap and water. Great detail. Thanks. K4XBC
Very interesting videos, Will. Heathkit radios are rare in this area. I enjoy watching your painstaking work
That yellow gleam on the knobs is nicotine stain. Those old rigs are typically dripping with nicotine. They bespeak of an era of widespread nicotine addiction.
You mention using a freq counter to calibrate the dial. Are you measuring the CW output?
Great video Will! The "clicker" on the band switch is called a de-tent. Dee Tent. :) W7RY
I used to directly ship custom research equipment I designed and built myself all over the world. None were ever damaged since I took a lot of extra care in packing. There's little excuse for a shipment to arrive like that.
My father (WB4BNF) had a SB-101. Rest in peace dad.
Great restoration. I have found that if I spray some of my contact cleaner into an empty needle tip bottle I can precisely apply contact cleaner into switch and control cavities instead of using the spray straw that blows some of the contact cleaner everywhere. It's a more controlled application of the contact cleaner and conserves some of it that would be otherwise wasted. Of course the spray straw is still useful for spraying larger surfaces that need it.
Just a couple of points: First, I think you have a Kenmore oven, and if like mine, they overshoot, and I have melted/warped certain plastics even at 170F. I use Naphtha for most of my cleaning, as I have never had any problem with plastics or paint and yes I have used water but so many things deteriorate if really doused. I too hate those mechanisms for the main tuning, finding I have to completely take everything apart to guarantee a permanent fix on my SB-300. Have had some problems with solder-joint on the tube sockets and some Heathkits used terrible resistors! Anyway, nice job!
Fantastic video, I like your work!
That was a beautiful resurrection of a historical rig!! Thanks and 73 de Karl, VE3GUN (FN04)
Fantastic job, once again Heathkit delivered a product that competed with the big dogs !
Curious.....How many manhours do you think you invested in that one. Looks and sounds great!
Always interesting Will! Great vid as usual. Everytime I see the rub and scrub it just makes me laugh😅 can't help it.
Just found your channel recently--subscribed immediately since I have a flea market HW-101 that seems in decent shape. Will pay attention to your channel while I return it to service.
Great video as usual. Parts rig to on the air .
Thanks for the video Will.....I checked QRZ, and sure enough, there it is for sale.....Beautiful!!!
NICE WORK, was fun to watch, way to much work for me but you did a nice job, W4GSM
Hi will, many thanks for your explanations regarding the restoration of the HW 101. I followed your description to restore my old SB 101. Just finished and everything works fine including the restoration of my PS 23. 73 from Bruno - F5LBA
How many do ytou have???
Good work. when I saw You fiddling with the pcb, the many holes, i thought, man, if You accept the challenge, put on a pcb a vintage clock chip IC KR145iK1901 (in a spider shaped package) made in the USSR. I did it a few times, seating took me from 20 minutes to an hour. These IC have very flimsy thin legs. You can bend the legs by blowing the smallest amount of air toward them. Have fun.
There is W5RKL page about Heathkit 101 restoration. Is that you? The reason i ask is that, on the W5RKL page i were a bit impressed by how the grounding was arranged. It looked like a number of PCB:s, which had ground planes around the periphery, bolted directly to the metal chassis via a large number of screws. I.e. all PCBs appeared to be grounded through the screws around the periphery. That looks like a very good way to do it. On old tubed Audio equipment (like e.g. the fabolous Marangtz 7), they use ground busbars (and long ground wires), which may have been OK in the 60:s. But today with all the HF noise everywhere, that kind of grounding is not immune enough & those amps are often described as "grey," or "brown" sounding... Today you do need, something like a star ground per stage, and i guess that is how it it is arranged in the heathkit? Old radios & i suppose old ham equipment seem to have been grounded in a better way. Becsuse they had too....
Will, I see a DX-100 on your desk! I have one also. It worked in 2019 when I bought it and hopefully I can get it up and running next year. Perhaps I can ask you a few questions on this when I get started? Thanks for the Video
Hello,I have a Heathkit, that I buy in a hamfest, and I looking for,a technician to fixed, for me,cut you,fix that radio for me?
What's in the home made RF probe? I'll guess a diode and a capacitor.
Great, TNX Will
Thank you for your video.
Will what can I say but you're the best ham friend a ham could have showing this effective simple way far better than the manual. REALLY APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DO. best 73s. Love you videos keep making more as so much fun and useful info to watch. 73s wb7qxu

Good evening! For a +50 year old HAM-radio, it is looking more than good! This is nearly a perfect restauration! Nothing else to say more! This is more than a perfect work! I can see the love, you took into the old rigs, ... ! I enjoyed to see, the radio comming to work again, ... after a long period of standing still! What a loveley and rewarding craftman-ship, you put in the rig. Absolutly stunning work and efforts, you placed inside that old radio! - I raised my hat to the master! - And this is not a 'phrase' that I used often, ... you could beleave in me, ... ! Love this/your videos! If I made any mistakes in my writing or spelling, please be aware, that English is not my native tounge. Please apologies my faults. Take care of you and good luck for the future! Go on, with this special kind of 'labour-work', for the old, but very beautiful radios! (Hi Hi ! ! !) - It reminds me, building my very first 'tube-radio' in 1974, as an 12 year old boy, only having a 'copy of an shematic', of a 'good- known working 0-V-2',(developed for a 'self- study- course', of a German non- profit- amateur-radio society.) equiped with two ECC81 (12AX25 ; I think this may be the US-name, for the tubes that I used!) made on a 'self-etched printed circuit' board. What a luxury 'gem' ! It was a real cool and very good working regenerative tube radio, with only a small number of parts, going from long wave, over medium wave, up to 10m HAM- band. It could 'demodulate' AM and also SSB/CW, with only the regenerative circuit inside! It was a 'hot' receiver, with a good selectivity, ... only using the feedback- knob, the volume and the tuning- dial, as 'adjustable and playable parts', onto this small radio. It used plug-in coils, for each HAM-radio or BC-band, ... ! But it works like a charme, I never see during my 'whole electronic carriere', any more. This '0V2- receiver' still exist, and is in a very good and working condition, even today! I often listen to '80m- rounds' in the late evening, and often enjoyed, 'band- openings' to the to the 'west- side of the USA', in the 'breaking morning'- time! (Grayline-DX! So sad that it is only a 'receiver', not a transceiver, ... ! Hi Hi ! ! ! ) - 1989, I made my amateur-radio license (db9pz) and never give up, that hobby, until now, ... ! Maybe, we can meet on the QRG, sometimes! 73 de Markus - db9pz - LOC: JN39fq - 5km/3miles east of LX !
