I've bought the full VDL about a month before this came out, I wish the Muse Group would hint a little as they were updating that VDL would come to Musescore 😭
if i've bought the full tapspace vdl, do i still have to buy the muse vdl?
Unfortunately yes, they are two separate products that are not compatible with each other.
Wow it must be my birthday, this is amazing! What a fantastic deal, I’m getting it right away 😎
Thank you for this! The dynamic is issue is pretty bad, I think it's the same for muse sounds instruments imo, I wish there was an easy way to fix that part but loving everything else about Musescore 4
yeah playback completely cuts out at mp and below haha. still works better in Muse than in Dorico
For the love of god please do not get the presonus studiolive for marching band
Two question: 1. If my sustain pedal is built in with my keyboard I still follow the same process? 2. Is there a way to make a pedal that can start and stop the metronome?
1. It should still work, just double check if the pedal sending MIDI CC 64 that’s the message for sustaining 2. Yes, it is listed under the actions when mapping the pedal.
thank you for your time and effort - very helpful - bless
I need an audio mixer for a musical at my school to use for exactly what you were saying about metronome in one ear, and instrument sounds for the audience. Do you know of any other mixers that have the 1-2, 3-4 option that are a little more budget friendly?
The Focusrite 4i4 is a great option. It’s $180 brand new off of sweetwater. You could also look at the Behringer U-phoria UMC404HD which is $109 brand new off of sweetwater.
@@CatherallAudiothank you! Does the Volt 2 work for this?
I don’t think it will, it only has 2 outputs.
The biggest gripe I have had with musescore as a whole is importing scores or parts from a sibelius exported xml (compressed or uncompressed), and even sending a musescore file to someone else and them importing parts, bass drum parts sometimes just get put on one line... I really like MDL, especially for writing tuplets and the accessibility, but the importing is brutal. I honestly think its a thing sibelius bakes in somewhere to make life harder for non-sibelius users. Different software architectures are going to have issues, but how the XML format is supposed to be the universal language between programs but it just doesnt translate correctly sucks.
Can you review the VDL sounds for musescore 🙏 Awesome review
Great review dude!! #1 fail on their end, dirty drumline playback makes it 100% non-usable. No one needs their kids to hear a dirty battery on the show mp3. I’ll take old VDL’s sound quality trade off for playing perfectly in time - You can change and alter EQ and all that, but you can’t fix bad sample editing. I heard this in their first demo they posted too, and hearing it’s just baked in, rough. They’d have to re-edit the entire sample collection and also remove the round robin as an option. If it can’t play basic street beat stuff clean, it’s going to be a complete disaster for anything even remotely challenging or dense. Maybe there’s plans for that and they just launched it early, but this is a long way from being a daily workhorse.
I definitely agree, it’s got some work to go before it could justify any mainstream usage. I’m interested in checking out the VDL offering on MuseScore!
At the very least, you can set the snare and quad playback to be "solo" using the sound flags. It won't sound as thick and full as a whole battery playing, but at least playback for them won't be dirty. The bass unisons, however... Yikes. Nothing you can do there.
I’ve been using it for the last few weeks, it’s not bad at all! My only gripes are only 5 basses, no options for 6 or more basses, and the sticking still isn’t figured out yet.
I continually watch these videos. Thanks for putting it out there for the world.
My sampler is not playing when I click the key (with mouse) trigger/hear the sound when I upload. Is there a setting that I have to change in order to do this?
You may need to check that the sample is set to 1-shot. You could also double check that you placed the samples on the intended octave that you wanted to trigger.
No you do not have stem splitter in logic pro 11 if your mac has intel chips!!!!!!!!!! Stem splitter is greyed out and disabled so you will need another option than Logic Pro 11 or include buying a new Mac with apple chips then you will have Stem Splitter for the additional $200 far from free. I am here for the options because I cannot buy a new Mac just to use stem splitter (Yes I do have logic pro 11 and Intel chips on my iMac, stem splitter is disabled)
Can it work without daw during live performance

So nice! Great walkthrough ❤️🎉
Hello friend! I downloaded the Backtrack Template, but it says the information is unreadable. Can you tell me if everything is ok with the file?
I sincerely apologize about that. I have fixed it now, the download should work as intended.
@@CatherallAudio It's perfect!!! Thank you very much. Your videos have helped me a lot, my friend 🙌🏼
Awesome tutorial. Thanks for all the mainstage content!
I saw the Bluecoats audible flag feature first in ensemble rehearsal the night before their first public show. I had the same reaction I had 10 years earlier when seeing/hearing the pitch bend for the first time.... like, what just happened?!? 😮😊🍁💙
The whole blue coats show was insane this year audio and visual and if I'm honest all of DCI was insane this year compared to other years
very cool interview...Drum corps since 2004 has been trying to figure out how to be top notch and forward moving with audio and amplification. It's been a journey for sure over the last 20 years. Not all corps are there, but after seeing Bloo 4 times this year, I'd say the future of DCI is in good hands, and this is the corps that's leading the way in sound design. And can I just say I loved this year and all the cool sonic moments. I really appreciate the straightforward attention to music and sound vs. the over-the-topness (although good) furniture/storyline/narration. I love when corps leave it up to the audience for interpretation! Beautiful stuff!
Great interview! It was nice to meet you at some of the shows this summer
amazing interview here! also as a audio engineer in the house of worship side....putting thought into sound design and products is soooo important. good stuff! truly inspiring and makes me wanna go to my alma mater corps and help design.
Hi im using scarlett solo, and im using motif XF. It only has 1 instrument port. How to use a mono out to my FOH? Should i just use the Left output? Thanks
You know what would have made this a better video? More of the music and less of you talking.
dude just go watch the shows, you clicked on this video yourself
@@sake42 Right, not knowing what the content would be. It's not like it was advertised with "mostly talking and a little bit of show" lol
@@sportsguy23 it’s a commentary channel, reacting on audio content, any amount of media literacy would tell you that the show music isn’t the main reason someone would click, it’s for the commentary

Phantom had a great show but their trombone and euphonium moment is so cheesy
I saw something from a Bluecoats staffer stating that the material for the flags during that awesome flag feature was Mylar. The same material that’s used in camping blankets and some balloons.
great video, thanks! i do love when colorguard equipment sounds make it onto the mics, so cool
Bluecoats took it to a new level with the microphones, but Glassmen had used metallic flags for the sound effects in their 2011 show.
Carolina crowns snare vocoder trick should have made the cut!
Blue Knights did it about 8 years ago....not new
@@bg1036 yea it’s not new but it was a cool moment for 2924
The Bluecoats flag feature was one of the most effective moments in all of DCI this year. Such a creative idea that the members executed wonderfully
Hell yeah! Finally someone putting spotlight on audio with drum corps. We need better audio education for those in the marching arts because man are there many uneducated folks teaching groups haha Love it! Keep it up
Thank you for the kind words!
The Bluecoats flag feature is one of my favorite moments also. The colorguard is such and important aspect that many don't seem to repesct enough.
I'm glad someone finally did a video on the top audio moments from DCI 2024. I was really blown away by the special audio effects being used this year on the field, and finally we have someone here who has addressed the issue with this video. As others have said throughout this year's DCI Season, "this is NOT your parents drum corps!"
Thank God it's not our parents drum corps. Bluecoats show has such an aura that elevates their show to new heights.
Thanks for the shoutouts! Some great audio moments from all groups this year.
Thank you for everything you do! I can't wait to see what you guys create next summer!
The most annoying thing about this video is that you put 3 things that should not be in drum corps it just bothers me you put in a trombone, a turn table, and a GUITAR!!!! And you put the only good solo that wasn’t based on a guitar or something electronical last
I disagree. Activities are meant to evolve. You could say that these do not belong in 1980s drum corps or 1990s drum corps. I would agree with that statement.
The most annoying thing is people wanting to double down on old ways and let the activity die due to some random high horse. If you are a fan of Drum Corps you'd know that DCI has been about change and evolution since 1972.
Some critics in 1971 said that drum corps was no more because two prominent corps -- the Cavaliers and the Madison Scouts -- incorporated stage costumes and story elements into their shows. Were those people right to say that?
the musical changes are something negotiable. The dancing around or laying on the ground and PUTTING AN INSTRUMENT ON THE GROUND AT ANY POINT is unforgivable, and one point I will never give way on.
This is NOT your Grandpa's Drum Corps. Deal with it! Kudos to DCI for bringing marching music to the next level. And thank you for acknowledging the great staff in this video's.👍👍
What were your favorite audio moments from the 2024 DCI season?
@@CatherallAudio when phantom first unleashed its power on its first show it was amazing
Nice work!
Awesome vid. I use both Mainstage on my Macbook Pro & sometimes Ableton Live on my Windows Laptop for my live Keys Rig....two great gig interfaces that are fantastic for live performance.....thay never let me down.
As a brass player and longtime DCI fan (2010 ageout) this was a fascinating listen. I have a lot of respect for the knowledge and expertise that goes into audio engineering. What I find frustrating, especially when I go to a live show, is how easily the audio mix can make or break musical moments. When a ballad soloist's beautiful tone is way too hot in the mix during a quiet moment, or the synth bass vibrates my chest and dominates the sound when the brass are already playing at full volume, it pulls me out of those moments that I come to drum corps for. And it's extra frustrating knowing that it is out of the performers' control. And I often wonder if the audio team or corps staff don't even hear some of those balance issues, or they DO hear it and it's actually the sound they want? Maybe that is the "loudness war" that they're referring to.
Thank you so much for the interesting video. I ask you if you could also illustrate in detail how to connect the whole setup including mainstage? For example if I have a mac that I use with MAschine 2 and different libraries, maschine plus, komplete kontrol, a Kurzweil Workstation and an expander, how do I connect them in sequence to be able to drive them all with mainstage? Thank you so much and if you can help me. Luigi
hello; great video! I use a MPK mini. Assigning a pad to play the sample plays a piano note along Any idea why ?
Make sure in your layout screen the keyboard is assigned to “Channel 1” and the drum pads are assigned to “Channel 10”. If they are set to “Channel 1-16” they will trigger all instruments associated with the MPK.
You know what, Sunday Sounds' Sunday Keys App already done it. And there's no issue at all. It also support 3rd party plugin. Also new ipad doesn't heat much at all (when I'm using sunday keys app along with 3rd party plugin). IT'S A POWERFUL APP! I mean, all your concerns have been addressed with these guys in sunday sounds and they've been successful since day 1. Do some research. I don't think apple can't do it. They even implement ipad version for Final Cut. So why?
I have a problem I can't figure out. I'm trying to make the sampler use only ONE of the zones from the different zones assigned to the same key on a Latin Percussion kit. I've tried everything I could to make it play only one of the zones but it keeps cycling through the different zones automatically and I can't figure out how to stop/modify this. It's the Stomps in the kit and I only like Stomp Copy 7 but every time I hit the key, it cycles to the different zones of the audio file. How can I modify this to only play Stomp Copy 7 zone? EDIT: Knowing this information will also help me know how to setup up the automatic cycling in case I also want to create a sampler instrument where one key triggers several different zones of an audio file.
they changed the number, but in reality, there is nothing really new, apart from a distorter and other useless plugins, it's been years, that we hope for a search for plugins, a decent browser manager, more responsive audio editing, it seems that Apple is only investing in iPad devices and not in your computers.
I have an Akai MPK88 midi controller running into my Mac mini and GarageBand. Is this a good buy for sound packs?
