Rebuilt the 390 and was getting 6 to 7. Replaced the 500 cfm eldecrap with 570 holley street aveneger and after getting it working correctly it is very noticably better gas milage. Growing up, my dad had quite a few torinos/fairlanes which is how I got into those cars in the first place. One of em was a 70 fastback w/429 TJ that he had done a mild build up on. The car really flew and with highway gears wasn’t too bad on fuel if you stayed out of the accelerator pedal ;).

    I went back and forth with a Holley and a Edelbrock carburetor on my V8 Maverick. Modestly modified. My experience was that the Edelbrock was much more reliable, and stayed tuned. The Holley did have a bigger kick WHEN it kicked. I never could get the Holley's to idle right or not change tune with the weather. I prefer the Edelbrock for a daily driver. The Edelbrock is much easier to tune. I did notice that the Holley was a little better on gas.

      interesting, does your mav have a 302 in it? When i was testing the holley out on this F250, at certain speeds the holley was a little more responsive- punchier.

    • @Stucifer
      @Stucifer Месяц назад

      @@mattsboatyard6891 I haven't had the car in years, but it was a 302. An out of the box universal carb (Holley #1850) is a cheap carb. I'm not condemning the Holley. I just say that if you don't really know how to tear one down and tune it, it doesn't slap on and work as well as the Edelbrock. I think part of the problem was the throttle cable to pedal was made for a 2V carb. The 2V cable might not have been long enough to open the secondaries. I think the geometry of the Edelbrock was more forgiving. The secondaries always opened on the Edelbrock

    • @mattsboatyard6891
      @mattsboatyard6891 Месяц назад

      I'm not sure if there are any differences between throttle cable lengths on 2v vs 4v cars- not an issue i have encountered to this point. On your experience with the holley- thats similar to what i experienced with the 390 on the F250. out of the box, the eddy worked just a bit better. All that said, my other old cars have holleys on em and run well. Both designs have their pros and cons

    I know this is old and you may not see it but I’ll ask anyway. Did the driveshaft angle change with the shorter driveshaft? And if so how did you adjust it back into correct geometry? Thanks

    • @mattsboatyard6891
      @mattsboatyard6891 Месяц назад

      It did change the angle very slightly but it actually made the angle even more neutral than it was before. Thats a nice thing about installing one of these in a car with just one single driveshaft. If you install a Gear Vendors into a truck, driveshaft angle issues are more likely, especially if there are multiple driveshafts in the driveline to begin with.

    • @mattsboatyard6891
      @mattsboatyard6891 Месяц назад

      I can see the merits in both designs. Personally, I'm more in the holley camp too- all my other old cars/trucks have had Holleys(and the occasional Autolite). This F250 was my first time using an Edelbrock and I was impressed with how it performed on this truck- the factory calibration really seems to agree with this 390. After filming the video- I had bought a calibration kit for the Eddy and after some experimentation i ended up just setting it back to how it was from the start. It runs nice.

    A friend of mine has a Nissan Titan and he gets 13 mpg. So 11 mpg is not bad at all for a 390 FE

    Replacement parts for these old Honda outboards are virtually non existent. I can't tell you how many guys pull these out of storage, get all excited because they're cosmetically excellent, but can't get them running because no one makes carb kits or ignition coils or water pump kits for them.

      I’m not sure about the availability of new replacement ignition components but carb kits and water pump kits are readily available for these old hondas. Check out eBay and boats.net. You’ll find what you need

    Direct comparison can only occur to start with constant steady throttle 1800rpm then 2200 rpm then 2500rpm with both the c/cheater on then off . Then u can do testing with light , moderate and heavy throttle between specified rpm . It has also a data log ability .

    Nice running outfit! When I was a young teenager, had an old 11.9' blue Sea King, with a 1966 9.8hp Merc on it. A really light boat, and when running Amsoil 2 cycle oil, that boat would literally fly, with just myself in it! With a little yhtottle control, I used to use other boat wakes to get it airborne!! Still alive to tell about it! It stands to reason why Dads worry about their own Sons!!

      That sounds like a great rig too! Those 1960s 9.8's are nice running motors

      @mattsboatyard6891 If I'm correct, 1966 was the first year they had the black cover and the newer ignition. Picked it up used, inthe mid 70's. It was used occasionally as auxiliary on a sailboat, so it had plenty of life in it!

      I need 10 seconds to tell you something Good! I care about you as a person, and tell you that The scriptures tell us that Jesus Christ died for people's sins! Whoever will have their faith in Him, that through Him, they'll be pardoned from the Judgement of their Sins by God, will be pardoned, and will be saved! Amen and good day 😊

    Matt. One thing you may want to look into if doing comparison testing is a tool called a DRAGGY. it is a gps tool that will record your 0-60, 1/8th, 1/4 mile times. accurate speed with different gears, tire sizes. and lots more stuff. i bought one for my brother and it is very neat. Definably worth the money. A few questions. are both carbs vacuum secondaries? if so the holly may be a little tighter on the secondary blades opening allowing it to stay on the primaries longer and providing a bit more milage. also, if the Holley is one with Annular boosters it will atomize the mixture a bit better than the Edelbrock carb. Thanks for spending the time to test, record, and share your results.

      Hey, thanks for the tip on the draggy! Looks like a very useful device and worth investing in for future videos. On the carbs, the Holley has vac secondaries but the Eddy's are mechanical. While driving the Holley, it felt like the secondaries were slow to open and that for acceleration performance this combination would benefit from a lighter secondary spring. On the other hand, I think that calibration was helping the MPG side, like you had suggested. Also, the Holley in this video has straight boosters.
