Is it worth it raising the cockels for meat?
❤❤❤❤❤👍🏻🙏🏻
I have a male and 1 female barred rock , then I have 1 male and 5 female Rhodes island reds. Both breeds I can tell you the rooster are peaceful , but because I only have a few hens , they want to butt heads. So I ll get more hens in the spring. Only difference between a male barred rock and female, the male will be lighter, more smoke grey , and white, feet will be full yellow, and of course bigger, the tail and the bright red thing on his head and chin a lot bigger. Cool thing about the breed, at 2 or 3 days you can tell there sex just by color lighter color are males. Once in a while might not work that way , but has for me. I pick my rooster of the Rhode Island Red breed, by the tail and wing feathers. Research how to doing it before I picked. Both breeds are hearty birds, I have 6 dogs and they can free range and dogs don’t bother them and dog won’t let nothing bother them. Even have a black Swedish duck, that like to get out to avoid my male ducks, I can find her with my Australia shepherd, they like buddies.
Hey Raven. Where ya been?
Thank you!
How is that supposed to help reduce ice buildup?
@@StrappedSnowMexican it gets tipped out when it's frozen. The bowl doesn't freeze to it
Do they not jump up on the board? I feel like mine would be using it like a seesaw. 😂
@@leahharris3323 they stand on it when they drink but u use a shortish one to avoid the see saw. Also without the board they stand and poop in it.
Why don’t you just buy a 6 gallon waterer like I have and put a heater in it? Ice problem solved.
@@Mainelyfowl not everyone has power at their coop
@@raven8472Chickens yeah having power definitely helps
Dont they get way bigger than that? I have three brahmas, one light brahma, and two buff brahmas
What if I didn't know that till they were a couple months old? How do I tell then? Is there a difference between the mostly black and the one's that have more gold on them?
Good layers of nice sized brown eggs, great meat birds, and at times the hens go broody, are great setters and mothers ensuring you free new generation of chickens for their lifetime. I love Barred Plymouth Rocks. Yes, the roosters are mellow as well.
I have one that is so huge I keep worrying that it's a rooster
Hi did you find out yet what your Brahma is?! 2 of my 11 week olds have a lot of suspicious red on their faces already and I thought I got all pullets =(
@@maryxoxo9 Turned out to be a rooster, but he's awesome and I love him
Thanks for the great info. I got 4 in a mixed bantam sale at TSC and it took me a couple days to figure out what they were.
And not breathing
I'm pretty sure the whole time he was plotting revenge for being embarrassed in front of his ladies.
I have sapphire olive eggers then got sapphire gems. These girls started laying a lil before their 4 month bday. They seem to have adjusted to the older hens and prefer fresh scraps vs feed. They look larger than the olive eggers and their brown egg yolks are darker yellow then the olive eggers. One has red feathers by the neck and they are darker feather colored then the olive eggers. Got them cause i was happy with the sapphire olive egger personality. Good temp.
I need ur help brother
what is going on? how can i be of assistance?
I added a ISA brown and a light brahma to a flock of 4 grown huff orpingtons and they are still young. Recently they been chasing the brahma and ISA around and I saw the brahmas foot bleeding. Not sure if it is natural since they have feathers growing on their legs or if mites got on their legs to attract the orpingtons to peck at it or if the orpingtons just pecked at it because feathers on the legs are apparently something attractive to peck at. Is there a way to create a bond between them or mutual relationship to prevent any bullying? I know orpingtons are considerably nice but they are also very extroverted and outward and go crazy over many snacks but the other two we just got are very docile and kind. I tried telling the owner i stay with that it might not be a good idea but she still got them. Is there a way to cure this headache of bleeding leg and chasing around?
So due to them having booted feet just normal scraps and bumps can turn into broken feathers. Not much u can do but keep an eye when they do hurt their feet feathers. Clean em up and observe. As far as the behavior. Chickens have a pecking order. Let it run its coarse. As long as your birds have appropriate space and more than 1 source of food and water bullying can just be kept an eye on.
One of my hens chases cats ,I have very old cat ,she is nearly 19,she doesn’t chase her ,but any other cat and she gets an angry look and goes gunning for the stranger cat The ones she chases are not convinced that is not a cat eater, and yeet themselves over an 8 ft fence to avoid being eaten by this dangerous looking bird She has been nicknamed thunder thighs ,she really runs at cats ,little legs going like pistols ,she really motors at them😂😂
Ive heard bantams are good at hatching out eggs cause they get really broody. Not sure how true that is but I find it interesting for sure. Im kind of thinking of adding 2 bantams next year.. but im not sure yet haha.
The silkies seem to be fairly happy to do it. Not sure about the duccles, as none of my female ones have survived free ranging as of yet. My roos do well enough. The millfluers get picked up before the porcelain though. Makes me sad. But Austin is king Austin cus he ain't been eaten lol
I've had mixed results with my bantams. My frizzled cochin is a super good mum, I ended up taking her inside in an enclosure with 22 chicks that she is taking care of only 2 are hers the rest she has adopted because most of my other bantams will take real good care of one or 2 chicks and abandon or even kill the rest. They're still young and it's the first lot of babies but yeah. One of the girls is the best parent ever the others are either OK or shit lol.
He's so gentle handling the hens. I love how the light brahma looked at him when he said "there's meat on that bird" Like she's saying "How dare you, sir!" 😂
Thank you for making me laugh first thing this morning. Love my chickens. Been away from them for work.
We have brahmas and we love them to death, they are sweethearts and really good layers. We have a Brahma rooster as well and a downside to him is he is so massive and his feet are so big that his favorite hens lose feathers on their back from breeding all the time. I do not quite know what to do about that, he has made them bleed a couple times too and I feel so bad for them although they seem to enjoy themselves 😂
Well they make a saddle for the ladies. Or he might need more ladies to spread out how often he's on each one
@@raven8472Chickens a saddle ? We got some younger ones that will be ready for him soon, hopefully that will help.
@@BearValleyPyro yeah the saddle wears on the hens back under their wings and protects them somewhat from voracious roosters
@@raven8472Chickens oh shoot, I have never heard of those. I'll have to look for some. Thank you 👍

I have Sapphire Sky chickens. They are weeks away from laying but they are gentle, beautiful birds.
Yes they are!
I have two sapphire gem chicks and I can't tell if the yellow dot on their heads means they're boys, or if the gray/goldish neck lining means they're girls.
How can you tell a hen from a roster when they’re young?
Females have a much smaller tidier white spot on their heads while males have larger less organized one
Thanks for all the good information
You bet
I bought 4. I loved their temperment and color. They all had problems with eggs breaking internally. Only one survived. Mated with a Blue Ameracuana and produced beautiful silver and gray offspring.
Nice!
bought three porcelains from tractor supply from the mixed bantam bin. they were all on sale and id never raised bantams before so ive been winging it!! lovely little birds. hoping to get more soon
If handled regularly they are super lovely birds
I heard the egg song.
Just bought some. Thank you! We are excited
They are great
I have several D'uccle birds.
I miss mine. Been away for work. They are great birds
Soo howww to so many people keep the 2 species together in the same brooder then??? Feed all birds 26% protein??
I'd put both foods in their own feeder. Easiest to separate during brooder age and go to mix feed as adults.
Two sapphire gems and two prairie bluebells. NO EARTHLY idea, as they are both new breeds to ME. They are beginning to look different; as the bluebells have neat little pea combs and the gems seem to have a single row. I THINK I have all girls, but you know how chickens are! Wing and vent checked at hatch; then watching eagerly for signs of puberty. We have four because we wanted one, but needed to ensure that at least one was a girl. (Yes, we checked and have a place to rehome them already) We are aiming for a docile, hand fed and raised, spoilt lump of a chicken. We need one to accessorize our couch, catch errant indoor insects and bread crumbs, and offer itself as a warm compress against the slings and arrows of life. A holding chicken, as granma Clampett would call it. It's great if she lays a few eggs. That's just gravy, and it's more than our dog gives us.
It has been my experience that if a rooster decides that YOU are not the boss, then he will assume that HE is the boss. You need to show him who is in charge. I'm not advocating for bird abuse here, but if he attacks you, he needs to lose this fight in no uncertain terms. A Buff Orpington rooster tore my elderly mom up one day and it would have been worse if the dog hadn't come to the rescue.
I had 4 sapphire hens and my main rooster was a blue birchin maran but my 2 of my hens were really broody and were constantly hatching out chicks.
Very helpful video - Thank you for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice job!
Thank you for sharing! I really enjoy watching your videos!
Glad you like them!
I had to get rid of my BR roo because he was always trying to stalk me when I went to feed and would go into full strength psycho attack mode with anyone else. He was a beautiful bird but super mean! Will never get another one. If I do he will get an early reservation to freezer camp!!
I find a varied rate in roos of the same species a few years in. Barred rock roosters for the first year so they are still young. But in say my porcelain duccles, some are over aggressive some aren't. Juat gotta see how they turn out.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I have 2 chicks❤love them❤
Your Chik is very beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You are so kind
Amrocklar ile arasındaki fark nedir?
Lol speaking from personal experience, my barred rock rooster is straight from hell lol hes so mean bit Def does a great job protecting the girls.
Mashallah
I just got 2…. That’s a small one? Lol I thought that was gonna be a big one. 🤣
They are fantastic birds. Love watching mine beeline to me. Lol. There little waddle they do.
I picked up 6 today. Just hatched from a local hatchery.
im so excited for you!
