Do u all think the Sapphire Gem is all its cracked up to be? This popular chicken had swept the floor in attention this last year, What do u think?
I think they are Fantastic
@@raven8472Chickens I agree!
Wonderful birds, some of the best.
Sapphire Gem: I raised two. (minimal study) One was a roo; showed his stripes VERY EARLY. The other a beautiful hen....with a seriously bad attitude. She wanted NOTHING to do with being held, petted, or interacting with people. Both placed to a farm that wanted to start producing them. Good luck, here ya go. As we were SPECIFICALLY looking for a CUDDLY chicken, they were both immediately out of the race. The farmer who accepted the two chickens says he is very happy with them. Outdoor chickens, little human contact...AND they have Rangers...
I bought 4. I loved their temperment and color. They all had problems with eggs breaking internally. Only one survived. Mated with a Blue Ameracuana and produced beautiful silver and gray offspring.
Two sapphire gems and two prairie bluebells. NO EARTHLY idea, as they are both new breeds to ME. They are beginning to look different; as the bluebells have neat little pea combs and the gems seem to have a single row. I THINK I have all girls, but you know how chickens are! Wing and vent checked at hatch; then watching eagerly for signs of puberty. We have four because we wanted one, but needed to ensure that at least one was a girl. (Yes, we checked and have a place to rehome them already) We are aiming for a docile, hand fed and raised, spoilt lump of a chicken. We need one to accessorize our couch, catch errant indoor insects and bread crumbs, and offer itself as a warm compress against the slings and arrows of life. A holding chicken, as granma Clampett would call it. It's great if she lays a few eggs. That's just gravy, and it's more than our dog gives us.
Just bought 4 they are a little over a week old they are so cute they are very active and talkative for little ones I have them in with 4leghorns we will see when they get older if they can live together
Mine wondered off, i assume nested somewhere in the woods, and i never found her spot. I did find my jersey giants spot though. lol. Beautiful birds.
Just got two sapphire gem chicks this week.. Only planned on one but then saw a very light, cream colored one in the bin (the only light one) and decided to get that one too. Best decision. They already have so much personality. So funny
Aww, mine is definitely a nice addition to the flock. Wait till tours get bigger and prettier!!! I'm excited for you.
I am very impressed with my Sapphire gem chickens. I have three that are going to be one year old this spring and they are phenomenal.
They sound great!!! Give them meal worms for me!!
Pretty bird
Ty, I'll let Crystal known u said so. :D
Have 4 love them
Mine looks pretty, doesn't bother the other ones. and she is a treat. But i feel like she looks like trouble sometimes lol. beautiful Pat all 4 of yours for me!!!
@@raven8472Chickens yeah mine just follow me around like lil dogs, anything I touch in the yard they have to touch, neighbors didn't even know I have them
Mine are only good for looks... I guess mine were born from the depths of hell. Not sure I'll try them again. 3 out of the 4 of mine turned out to be psycho bullies and torture my easter eggers (one bully left and I've had to permanently separate her until she becomes dinner). Only one has a good disposition with other birds. All of them lay fairy eggs - smaller than a small egg from the store. I think the line was crossed with bantams at one point in their line. The do lay almost every day (when they lay at all) but when 5 eggs = 3 from the store are you really getting much more than from a Buff, Australorp or easter egger?
mine's egg size is finally adequate , but i'm sorry u had such rough ones!!!
I am just beginning my chicken owner journey. Thank you for the video. These were the first chickens I looked at. I am definitely getting them. I love in Ohio and winter can be very cold. That's my only concern.
You'll probably be just fine inOhio!!! Nice and balmy down there lol. Pat your new chickens for me!!
hey jim here, I live in Minnesota and my sapphire gem chicken named Cloudy by my grandson is very calm and will stay around the yard, I live in town as long as you are out there. very personable. my rode island reds are JERKS to her so they are separate from her and my duck. so if she can stand below 0 degrees and more at times I think OHIO will be just fine for yours. mine are fine with no heat. all winter. GOD BLESS
I have 9 girls and a rooster. Mine lay large to extra large brown eggs. Almost all year long. They are sweet & docile. The rooster is a dark almost black with green sheen. He is not the friendlist but protects my hens. I have a young one coming up to replace him and he is a sweetheart.
They sound super lovely. Pat them for me in the am!!
I have 3 in my flock. Very docile temperament and good egg producers.
Pat them for me and tell them they are great chickens!!!
My 2 sapphires are super sweet girls.
Give em pats for me!!!!
Excellent 👍
Ty :D
I have two Sapphire Gem hens for egg production. They are OK chickens. They are sort of friendly, and they lay about three eggs each , a week, over the last year. light brown medium size eggs. However, you can do better with several "cross" chicken breeds that are even friendlier and that lay more eggs, and are widely available. They go under numerous names: Amberlink, Goldsexlink, Blacksexlink, Redsexlink, Bluesexlink, Golden Comet, Cinnamon Queens, ISA Brown. Each of these should give you in excess of 240 eggs a year. And each of these are friendly and of medium size.
I have had a back yard flock with many kinds of chicken s over 30 years.
Yeah I find my barred rocks sweeter. :D
I have had Barred Rocks, they are ok. For sure sweetness, the Buff Orpington, American style is the best of the many breeds I have had, many will say the same.
Ray Whitehead, all of the oned you mentioned are short lived and end out with alot of production issues, organ failure water belly etc etc
I had 4 sapphire hens and my main rooster was a blue birchin maran but my 2 of my hens were really broody and were constantly hatching out chicks.
I have two sapphire gem chicks and I can't tell if the yellow dot on their heads means they're boys, or if the gray/goldish neck lining means they're girls.
hmm. just a regular chicken.
I have three, they will be 1 this April. They are good layers average 3-5 eggs each per week. They are tall with long legs and can see higher than the others. Each one is different. One is very independent even likes to sleep by herself but is not low on the pecking order. One is very docile and easy going, and the other one is a bit shy and timid. They look just like yours, very pretty. Also I feel like they are a bit smarter then the average chic. Overall, they are very easy to please and just easy going. Also pretty quiet compared to my other chatty girls. Thanks for video!
Mine is quieter than my other hens to. Which is strange to me since they are part barred rock. and my barred and her late sister are just chatty Cathey's lol. Give your girls a pat from me!
i have two sapphire gem chicks right now and can’t wait until they grow up into Crystals!
Lol crystal was a beauty. Unfortunately after her leg started getting better and I returned her to the flock she randomly decided to hide outside at night for a week... she'd be outside every morning waiting to lay an egg. And now... no more crystal. I miss her sassy self.
I have Sapphire Sky chickens. They are weeks away from laying but they are gentle, beautiful birds.
Yes they are!
I have sapphire olive eggers then got sapphire gems. These girls started laying a lil before their 4 month bday. They seem to have adjusted to the older hens and prefer fresh scraps vs feed. They look larger than the olive eggers and their brown egg yolks are darker yellow then the olive eggers. One has red feathers by the neck and they are darker feather colored then the olive eggers. Got them cause i was happy with the sapphire olive egger personality. Good temp.
We have 7 Sapphire Gem hens. We love them. They lay really well for us. They are our only hens now that we rehomed our one Salmon Faverolle. We get 5-7 eggs daily from our 7 hens. They're active, very inquisitive, very friendly. Several are very talkative and jump up on us to spend time with us for a short time each day. Hoover's Hatchery supposedly has a trademark on its name. They are a cross between an Andalusian hen and a Barred rock roo. If you breed those together and see barring in the chick the chick is a cockerel.
isnt it all such fun? Genetics in birds to me are wild.
I have 5 of them. Pullets, 10 weeks old. They are very friendly, curious, and I can pick them up and pet them.
They don't seem to be as great in foraging as my Welsummers, Buff Orpingtons, or the Prairie Bluebell Eggers.
I tried to give one of the Sapphire gems worms, but she didn't know what to do with it lol. The others saw it, cam running and were like "give me that" and gobbled it up.😂
Mine stays with her other 1 year old lady friends. they all seem to forage about the same in the spring fall and summer. I would say my light brahmas are more fierce for getting the worms and moving stuff, I think the other ladies just let them do the heavy lifting lol.
Interesting. I just got one sapphire gem along with 3 Novagen and of the 4 chicks she’s the one that’s the absolute pig when I bring them worms.

Hi! Happy New Year! What a beautiful chicken! You do a great job of describing your chickens! I am wishing I had a place to raise and keep chickens. Oh! Wait! I have a good friend who has alot of chickens. He keeps some and sells some. Sooooo... I a going to have a conversation with him to see if I can keep 3 or 4 chickens of my very own at his place...all things are possible, right!
Aww thats a great idea, and since your friend has chickens you'll have access to expert help with all your needs while your learning!!! glad to have you here.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I have two of these girls, suki and azul! They both walk right up to you looking for treats! Suki i consider one of our smartest birds. Neither of them like being picked up though, azul even making a sort of hissing noise, almost. They are both amazing egg producers, they lay an egg almost every day!
Aww. Give en some treats from me!!
I have 2 left out of 3 and they are great birds, maybe not as predator aware as some of my other birds. The best personality. I have mine for eggs, I have a mixed flock.
They sound lovely
Heather, where do you think the Gems are in pecking order in your flock? Also, which breed has been the best "predator aware" egg layer for your flock? We are adding some hens this spring and predators are an issue. Thanks!
@pamanderson1417 I would say that one is my main roosters favorite and is at the top of the hens pecking order. The other is at the bottom of the pecking order. My most predator aware is my Swedish flower hens, the next I would say is my Austrolops. My roosters are my Swedish Flower Hens and they are the most predator aware and alert the hens. My main rooster will even be he designated decoy if necessary ( but besides losing feathers, no significant injuries).
@@heatherhollander664 thank you! I may consider getting some gems but also look up info and availability of Swedish flower.
Purchased a straight run of Sapphire Gems from Hoover's through Rural King. The hens are the beautiful grey with the darker head, but the males are barred which surprised me because the pictures I saw before purchasing didn't show the males as being barred. My hens are sweet, my males are protective, yet personable to an extent. They do pester the hens constantly though now that they're at the egg laying stage.
Aww lol. Sounds fun.
Great video, thanks! Just got 4, we are first-time chicken parents, but they do seem to be very docile. And for little chicks, they really put away the Org Starter feed!
Oh yes chicks are hungry hungry. I'm excited for u and your chicks!
Your videos are simple and very nice.
Thanks a lot 😊
I have 5. They vary in color for sure.
They are quiet pretty!!!!!!
