Playing In The Sunderland Mud Because Of A Vision
Today you join me on this vlog style shoot as we ventured down into the river bed to attempt to capture a scene I have been thinking about for quite some time now, I just waited until I had the ideal conditions and when I was feeling up to it as I have been having some struggles recently physically. I did make some mistakes in my video, I felt a bit rusty. Sadly theres a big part of the video footage I didn't capture, some of the time I don't check if the camera is recording when I am getting my footage I just wait for a audible noise but that's hard to hear.

      I moved back to England because after 24 years of living in Australia it never felt like home and I was depressed, I felt so out of place as well. I wanted to go to places that just didn't exist in Australia, since being back I have been able to tick so many things off already and theres so much more to see and do. I also wanted to be closer to my remaining family members. The weather over here has actually been pretty darn good.

    I find your move interesting ,like how you pursue your ideals and enjoy following the adventure which is a little left of field as i have herd Britain has been economically challenging place and for that reason people are moving out from years of economic Austerity, but i know not every things about economics ,but do you mind me asking , how do you fund it. Because you have almost been 4mths in motel's at I am guessing 500 pounds a week 700aud ,$2000 in moving costs ,plane tickets, car purchase $7000 pounds and extra expenses a really expensive place to drive ,in comparison to Australia which i think is much cheaper to own and run a car by the sounds, food ect with no employment for mths on end . Do you have inheritance, investments,past business cash ,pay out from your injury🤔. Britain isnt Bali its known to be tough economically and expensive,plus business start up costs, and upfront rent ,i mean you're talking well over 100000aud i just don't know how you find the cash, i mean people generally go to developing country's Asia ect so if they dont work the cheaper cost of living takes the pressure off ,but you have basically gone from out of the frying pan into the fire . I know its not my business but just feel people might be interested in how you fund such a trip ,i appreciate you're grit ,just feels a bit vague on whats required to achieve such a move, sorry if it feels like a rant ,my curiosity has just got better of me as watched your move

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto

      Thanks for your questions Hamish, I will go over this in a future video once I am all setup as currently it is still on going. Work wise I plan on working globally so just having an income in England won't be the main thing of course this comes with another level of challenges. How I am about to fund my venture is using savings, I wish I got a payout when I had my fall 8 years ago. The time I moved I wasn't in the position I wanted to be in with work, I wanted to be earning money first from my work and support myself when on the road. Family caused me to make the move sooner, this has now put me in a very challenging position but theres many ways I can earn money once I get a place. It is also good to be curious and investigate by asking questions, I don't see it as a rant in any form :) Money is certainly going out very quickly! Hotels per week is roughly £800-900 per week or $1600-1800AU due to the current exchange rate, eating I try to budget a small amount each day but once every 2 days I have a meal somewhere, theres only so many hours you can deal with hunger pain. I could keep going but I will go over this in a future video. I have taken a screenshot of your comment for me to bring up in that video as it is a very good one!

    I know that things seem tough right now. But a few years from now, when you are established with a home and car, you will look back on these trials and laugh - those were the days. The entire four months will be looked upon as a valuable learning experience - proving to yourself that in challenging times, you can lean on yourself and pull through. I think a lot of people get scared when alone and start panicking. It really is important to know that during challenging times, a person can be their own most valuable companion - you must have trust in yourself. A person who requires companionship from someone else, in order to succeed, should probably not take up the challenge in the first place. Cheers

      Thanks Mike 🤠 You're certainly not wrong about the last four months, I have learn't a lot and it has tested me in ways I never thought it would. I also got over my fear of flying, I thought I was going to be a nervous wreck on that but I done a much better job. Everything that I have been dealing with I have just broken down into smaller tasks which has helped massively, I have also started going more with the flow and this has reduced the amount of panic attacks I would have.

    Simon please get everything in writing (landlords aren’t always honest) and be sure that the condition of the property is up to a proper standard of living before you hand over your cash. I hope this helps and the property will work out for you. It’ll be nice to see you settled and happy in a house. I know youve got this sorted. Best of luck. Follow your gut, the best option is out there for you:-)

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto 5 дней назад

      Well everything as it stands it has all been in writing and theres a paper trail, I did say to the agents about drawing up a contract for the works but they said that isn't needed as the works will get done. The place is in a liveable standard and theres no mould to worry about that will cause breathing problems. My main concern is the windows planes falling out as some are loose but if that happens I know how to seal up the openings until new glass is fitted. If I need to I'm sure I have connections that will help me out. I think the landlord is in America, I do wonder if I know them or if they know me, I am sure as time passes we will connect.

    • @melscreativelens

      @simonphillipsphoto You’ve got this:-) You are on the right track, and you’re skilled at fixing things.

  • @Mike_in_Louisiana
    @Mike_in_Louisiana 6 дней назад

    Just thinking to myself. Maybe you could offer to the landlord that if they purchase the materials for the proposed upgrades, you could supply the labor of installation for a reduction in lease - say about £900/month. You would have to agree on a time-line for the installation service. Can you install windows and floor tiles? Maybe even lease at £800/month with your labor. Just an idea. Cheers

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto 5 дней назад

      Hey Mike I have actually thought of doing this leading forward, it would be nice to make improvements to the place either myself or with hired in labor. I am sure the landlord would like that so long as they are kept updated in detail on what is happening. But what I could do is when I start earning really good money, I could offer to buy the place and use the bad points as a way to negotiate a price. I could spend £5k on the place but that could push the value up. I can certainly do a lot myself, I know how to build a house and fit it out. I know how to make windows, doors, cabinets and so much more, all learn't from jobs I have done over the years and training in different fields.

    • @Mike_in_Louisiana
      @Mike_in_Louisiana 5 дней назад

      I think that it would be imperative that you clarify the time-line for your repairs. If you made a landlord very happy with your completed work, you have a very good reference for future potential jobs. Everyone contracting out work asks for references from prior projects. If you made several renters very happy, then you're golden - it's incredibly hard to find honest contractors - we are all searching for one - we ask our friends for leads in finding one! You seem to be a dedicated person who can be a bit demanding for quality - just the type of person everyone is trying to locate for projects. You could earn money for your personal qualities - honesty, eye for details, and hard working. Cheers, my friend.

    With the issue of putting the film in backwards, the only hope would be to wind it all the way on, put it in a dark bag and re-roll it back onto the original spool. This is the process I use for rolling film from a 120 spool to a 620 spool for my box brownie.

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto 5 дней назад

      I did think of doing this but where I was I didn't have a dark bag, I also exposed a few sections of film to the light when trying to work things out then I realised I messed up. I hadn't seen a negative in a while so I forgot what it looked like. I will certainly do this in the future, I have a dark bag now :)

      Thanks for the suggestion. I have just had a look into the app on the App Store and it seems very similar to the app I use called Viewfinder, it works a treat the only time I got it wrong is when I forgot to change my settings on my camera or in the app. I would like to get a light meter that you'd use in a studio you know with the white dome, I had one on my Leica R4 and that was always accurate.

    Good luck. We have never in UK history had so many people moving here (or returning here) - now second only to the USA on the whole planet. We have 900,000 a year coming. I suppose it is nice we are so popular. I come from NE England although my siblings and I all moved away to London/SE etc as more work there. Good luck with finding a property to rent and work. My son just bought a new car (second hand) and the insurance was nothing like as high as quoted on this video although he does have a no claims discount and track record but the car is not very powerful which is probably a reason he is also seen as a good risk and it is cheaper. It can be a good idea to compare different cars online as to insurance costs. He lets out a property and lives at home and we have never ever had so many people wanting to let - 12 couples all trying to say why they are the best over one weekend last time - all largely due to the huge numbers coming to the UK and also the fact the state chose to make letting property not so profitable so people stopped letting it to some extent. My other son has never had any trouble finding full time work as a postman in the UK - there are definitely some jobs where you can get work if money is an issue. Also try apps for part time and casual work although they tend to be in areas where the local people have a lot of spare money so might want the services.

      Hi Jane thank you for long and detailed comment sharing your experiences. There certainly is a lot of people living here, as an outsider to the country who hasn't lived here for a long time I haven't been able to see the changes. In the north it is certainly busy but once you get out of the cities and towns it is peaceful. I will see if I can bring over my no claims from Australia to England as I haven't made a claim in years and I have done advanced driver training over the years. A income shouldn't be an issue for me once I get some of my plans in motion, to cover my rent, bills and expenses I need a really good income specially since I am single.

    Haven't watched your channel for a while, I'm in the process of packing everything up in Florida for my move back to the uk in January, I fully understand about the income I'm in exactly the same boat. Best of luck to you mate, I've been looking at cars myself as I'm sure you are aware by now , I'm looking at 1.5 L diesel engine cars , nothing with GT , COOPER, SPORT , ST , or anything else like that in the title, basically just a basic pos runabout, when no money is incoming it goes out extremely fast 😢

      A bit has changed on this channel in this past year, crazy how things have gone in a good way. That is wicked you're moving back to the UK, where about are you looking to live? Having no income is certainly scary but it is only short term but still scary when you see money leave your account and nothing coming back in. With the car don't get a diesel these will be more expensive to keep on the road with the taxes, you're better off getting a petrol with a better mpg rating which is what I will do. I was looking at the Mini Cooper Works but they are expensive and are costly to maintain. I think now I am looking at a standard one with a great mpg rating but has at least a 1.6L engine so it will use less revs when on the motorways and a but more go. Do you have family over in England?

    Challenging times indeed for the cost of living is madness in the UK. Everyone is being squeezed from every direction unfortunately. Well done for being honest and open with your emotions, mistakes and positivity. Hopefully you can some luck with the accommodation soon. It really is crazy but no where near as bad as Australia it is on a whole other level over there, property prices are predicted to go up a further 20% for Perth, WA which is insane. I felt I have to be honest for things to also make sense, theres some things I forgot to mention but I will go over those at some point in the new year. I was looking at smaller properties but they just wouldn't work for me, what I am looking to pay isn't actually that bad. Staying in hotel rooms that are small i am looking forward to having space afterwards. I try and keep as focused as possible, I certainly feel this experience has changed me in a good way. I really can't wait to get out and take photos again and meet up with people and connect with companies and businesses.

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto 27 дней назад

      They are great cameras! I didn't know about not being able to update the firmware yourself that is an odd one, I guess because it is classified as a cinema camera they are being extra careful with it. Mine still has the 1.3.9 version. I can't fault the camera though, it would be nice to have a touch screen like my other cameras haha. I am surprised the RJ45 port doesn't seem to want to work, I take it you need it for high volume work? I wonder if it is a driver issue with your computer since the camera is more than 10 years old now and certain tech doesn't work like it used to.

    Offhand - make sure you're looking at those hotel rooms incognito or even ring and ask for deals on a months rent. The reality is even locals are having to think of what "home" looks like through a creative lens. If you have troubles make sure you get in touch with tenants unions in your local area. There are definitely some sharks out there. Actually I think there are some big perks for landlords with empty properties with the tax system, I think more so for some offshore investors. Your real estate friend will know more. Would you consider house sitting?...some are lomger term. There are some great websites that help keep it formal.

    Sometimes it seems like there is no rhyme or reason with applying for rentals. You can have all your ducks in a row and be a perfect candidate yet still be declined. There are just SO many people applying for any avialable property out there. When an agent is involved youre just taking their word they've forwarded your application, too. It's a disheartening process on the hope rollercoaster so look after yourself and don't let the small knockbacks eat away at your time here.

      It really is crazy! Gosh, what was wrong with that owner?? The rental market is horrid in the UK, and it's not easy finding the right place. I would also add, that improving a property would be a no no for me, if I am going to live there it has to be right, and the most I'd be willing to do would just be internal decoration.

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto 27 дней назад

      I have no idea what was wrong with them and even the agents were shocked by it. I hear you now about not doing up a place, since releasing and making this video I have changed my outlook and I would rather get a place that I don't need to do anything to plus it is not my responsibility to do so and a waste of money. I wouldn't mind painting a wall of a few but completely redoing a house is out of the question now for me to do.

    I moved from Sydney to Perth and lived in Perth for 12 years, 1988 - 2000. Although there were things I liked about Perth I too never felt at home, never felt welcomed and always felt isolated and this was me with wife and two children born in Perth. Here's the thing, I love Australia, I was born here, father's side is multi generations born here, mother was born in UK, yet I always felt there was something missing, I never fit in 100% here. On top of that feeling as beautiful as Australia is, the lack of cultural depth within the people and the lack of visible history reminding me where I came from is palpable. Immigrants form their own enclave suburbs and live within themselves to preserve their culture and change the suburb into mini versions of their own countries. Yet being of Anglo-Saxon descent immediately means I am not allowed the same privilege, suburb and street names have to now be changed to reflect other cultures, I must assimilate into other cultures, yet they do not have to assimilate into mine and so on..... In the end I feel connected to the UK, to the history, to the countryside, to the people. I myself would have loved to return to the UK but what I see now will illegal immigrants, the poverty on the streets of many towns, death of the High Street, homelessness, two tier policing and horrible governance by those in charge, make the decision to go live there a big no. I will always feel an outsider in my own country, Australia, but in my older years now I see the beauty it has to offer, the relative freedom, the weather, the beaches and our 19th century architecture, what's left of it, as all positives. I will focus on these things we have and will avoid dwelling on societal short comings and lack of culture. I am my people in the end, I have my family, they are my people as well, I am content in my decision and I understand yours, totally.

    • @SimonPhillipsPhoto
      @SimonPhillipsPhoto 27 дней назад

      You're so right there but I think as well as you got toward the end you have been hearing some lies. I thought it would be like this with all the immigrants and England would be loosing itself but I can tell you this much England is still England. Those coming over from other countries for the most part start to get engrossed in the English ways I see it daily when I go out. The north is just stunning and the people are super friendly and I can connect really well with them where in Australia I felt like an outsider because I was different. As I site here in my hotel room on this cold wet afternoon as the sun has set not to long along, theres so much to do in such a small area. I can walk down the one of many high streets, theres even a big shopping centre. You don't have to travel as far and it is so dense with different cultures and history which I love, it is really comforting hearing others open up and share their stories and accept you. Certainly don't give England the big Red Cross to not go over to visit and explore, I think it is the best place to live personally because of what there is and easy access to other countries. I will be back to Australia for trips and adventures in the future as it is an incredible place but I wouldn't look to live there again.
