MM3 CVT-coupled-flywheel drivetrain speed regulator design proposal
This video is the videographic counterpart to the design proposal in discord.com/channels/649165975647682560/649172304823058443/1288715761875025971 which features a fully mechanical marble machine drivetrain speed regulator that allows the musician to pedal in phase with the music while dynamically storing instead of dissipating excess energy in order to maintain speed during energy deficits.

    The only thing I don't like about this machine is that the place the typewheel strikes is buried way down in the machine. Can you see what is being typed as you type it?

      You would need to know a bit about how typewriters work in order to identify the component that needs to be pushed away. You need to find the bar that each key presses on in order to actuate the ribbon lift and advance mechanism as that is the primary source of resistance in the mechanism. This can be held in a position such that the ribbon is kept lifted and slightly covering the text (hence why it isn't practical) while allowing enough remaining movement of the ribbon actuation bar so as to allow the ribbon to advance slowly and prevent wearing a hole through it. If you don't want to do any modding, then I would recommend experiencing the Hermes Ambassador or one of the Hermes 8 or 9 which should be similar.

    How would you describe the action, sound and feel of the Ambassador versus the 3000? Thanks for your thoughts.

    • @haelscheirs_haven
      @haelscheirs_haven Месяц назад

      With a hard platen, the Ambassador is certainly louder. Otherwise, I find the touch lighter and smoother on the Ambassador since the Hermes 3000 has more resistance from actuating the ribbon mechanisms. The Ambassador's typing feel is simply excellent and primarily inertial with low friction. The Hermes 8 or 9 should be similar.

    • @MikeRandolph-kt2fr
      @MikeRandolph-kt2fr Месяц назад

      @@haelscheirs_haven Thanks! Does the Ambassador have any equivalents or competitors in the soft, easy-touch category? Other than the 8 or 9, of course.

    • @haelscheirs_haven
      @haelscheirs_haven Месяц назад

      @@MikeRandolph-kt2fr The Ambassador is probably the lightest-feeling standard typewriter I know. Others tend to have more force or inertia concentrated at the start or middle of the press (pre-war Underwood standards and similar, Triumph, Siemag Standard, Voss), or they increase progressively but in a somewhat mushy manner (post-war Smith Corona), else are heavy and consistent in variation (Olympia SG-1, Facit T2, post-war Underwood, Rheinmetall, Remington, Royal, Groma), or full or "lush" if not a bit mushy (Remington/Underwood Noiseless Standard, Consul/Commodore Standard, post-war Adler, Olivetti). The Ambassador maintains a lightness while also allowing you to release the key sooner so that the typebar can continue under its own momentum. Post-war Olympias portables starting with the SM-4 or later SM-3s can be quite light, but to the point that you will feel the keys bottoming out. For a fast touch that is a bit heavy and consistent but allows quick release of the keys, I would recommend Facit portables. Some machines like the Alpina SK 24 require adjustment or unhooking of a spring to get them to type very pleasantly light, whereas the Ambassador was this wonderful from the start.

    Excellent video! 07:20 Looking at the owner's guide, I believe that short stud helps provide a tactile (and visual) indication as to which face is pointing forward. Normal is straight back. Mimeograph is that bit on the right side (as seen from the back) and the carbon face is when it is on the left side. 01:10:00 The long S appears in English prominently up until the 19th century. (Look at a repro of the Geneva Bible and you'll see it all over the place once you recognize it for what it is.) It had a slightly different sound than the short S. It normally appeared at the beginning of words but not always. In Germanic script, this (I believe) became the Sharfe "S" (The "B" like thing) which, thanks to computer keyboards, is most commonly being replaced by "ss" at this point, and in English, I'm guessing it became the doubled "s" as we've always known it.

    The progression from cast/milled parts to stamped parts is typical in the progression of mechanical designs. The milled parts are more precise and more robust but the stamped parts are cheaper, lighter, and easier to assemble even if they aren't quite as robust. That doesn't mean they aren't adequate for the job, though. You notice how overbuilt that earlier machine is. Classic example. These changes also typically make them easier to service as well.

    The stylus and the fact that you're basically "swiping" like on a modern cellphone is really interesting to me. It is actually far simpler and lighter than a comparable "standard typewriter" of the time, and likewise probably lighter than some portable typewriters. One must not forget the effect of multiplying all the parts for conveying motion from a single key to a typebar by up to 44 times, and all the cast and machined framework needed to keep all those parts rigidly constrained and working in concert.

    Too bad about cracking that lever, but I've had two (or is it three) Hammonds with one of those levers broken. I think the breakage happens when the shuttle becomes bound or sluggish and the typist pushes hard on the key to get it to move. The key levers have enough mechanical advantage to break the lever, which seems to be a casting. The takeaway for anyone who has gotten this far is not to force the keys when something binds. I haven't watched your next videos, hopefully you found an effective repair. Or is the JBWeld actually holding? That would be fantastic.

    • @haelscheirs_haven

    • @haelscheirs_haven
      @haelscheirs_haven 8 месяцев назад

      I think that should be an expected safety feature as you wouldn't want to press a key or engage the escapement in the middle of the carriage moving during tabulation. Do the spacebar and keys remain blocked after releasing the tabulator? Does the tabulator mechanism disengage after hitting a tab stop or the right margin, whereby you can then do a carriage return and have the escapement reengage to block the carriage from moving to the left?

But if I don’t put a tab stop on using the + key and just press the large tab key it appears to just lock everything. As you say this is probably user error on my part. • @haelscheirs_haven
      @haelscheirs_haven 8 месяцев назад

      @@Lexikins1978 If I remember correctly, the big tabulator button is supposed to be able to be pressed and quickly released, its keeping the tabulator mechanism latched until it hits a tab stop or the right margin. When you press the tab key and release it, does the carriage move toward the left on its own? If you press the tab "+" key at a point on the line then do a carriage return, pressing the tab key should cause the carriage to move to and stop at that position. Then if you are at that position, pressing the tab "-" key will clear that tab such that it won't be stopped at again.

And today I picked up a Remington Travel-Riter from July of 1954, made in Holland, that is actually a Torpedo 20, it is said! So, do I need a Torpedo 18, when I have 2-300 typewriters already…… I’m not actually asking you… just wondering…. But feel free to comment, if you wish. The fact that Remington purchased Torpedo, to me, diminishes the appeal of owning real German typewriters…. But maybe a Royal FP, now that I think of it… but only in a grey color.., not a pink or chartreuse one, it was silver or grey with a fairly flat front panel… thanks for the memory jogger! I’ll ponder it….. let me look at my FP again! What ever it was, it was the one I liked to use most… I wasn’t then, that excited about the look of the Smith Corona…, I like it now though!

    You mentioned Pierson Airport, so I assume … Toronto, ON. I’ll be there in May, for my brothers wedding. Staying on the West side. Any chance of meeting at a Cafe or coffee house to chat typewriters?! Thanks for your thorough and indepth reviews!

    I found an advertisement from an unknown date (1950?) that showed three Juwel models of typewriters by price. The top one was the “Blitz” at 350 Deutsche Marks, or 1,155.16€ today. Noting: “Juwel Blitz” “Die Kleine Fur Das Buro Oder Anspruchvolte” - “the small one for the office or demanding work” Next was the Juwel Fix, at 297.50 DM, and the Juwel Filius at 242.50 DM.

    I just received a Juwel Blitz from the Czech Republic, that is supposed to be a Juwel Rapid… but seems to be model unique to itself. There seems to be no serial #, so cannot check production dates. It has chrome & glass keys, unlike the Rapid models I have seen. Has a pre, or just postwar feel, but the TWDB, lists Blitz’s as a 50’s model, so …… Anyway, I really like it, and once the segment is cleaned, it should be a snappy typewriter! Always love watching your indepth reviews and analysis! Thanks

    Where did you get a ribbon? I have that model and need ribbons for it.

      In this case the ribbon that was already in the machine was still usable. Otherwise, you can check out Ribbons Unlimited.

    Thanks a lot for uploading this video! I got my hands on one of these machines after like a year of searching, and your videos are helping me bring it back to its former glory 🫡. Thanks again!

    *Correction*: 56:18 Equalizer APO uses _IIR_ filters for its graphic and parametric EQs which I believe is inherently minimum-phase in this application, its separately supporting "convolution" filters which are synonymous with FIR. As far as I know, IIR more readily allows manipulations in the frequency domain while FIR takes in a .WAV file of the time domain impulse response and would thus require Fourier transforms to translate frequency domain changes into the impulse response that is being convolved with the audio signal. Likewise, FIR will only cause pre-ringing when you perform _non-minimum-phase_ manipulations (e.g. linear phase EQ) to the impulse response. Else, FIR can perfectly emulate minimum-phase IIR filters, and for a sufficient window length can capture the reflection properties of speaker responses in a room (showing up as delayed spikes within the impulse response, those spikes encoding the spectral balance and timing of those reflections), but necessarily incurring more latency and processing overhead proportional to the FIR filter's window length (.WAV file impulse response window). Those reflection spikes in the frequency domain show up in the sharp comb filtering among other jagged artefacts. The close relationship of the time and frequency domains is quite fascinating. Also, the Meze cables were later found to indeed be much closer than frequency response than as seen in this video, the variations having been due to movements in the headphone pads or in-ear mics. The Meze Elite "V3.1 PEQ" being so flat for my blocked canal in-ear measurements was due to the original Harman EQ based on the headphones.com measurements being similarly flat overall, but being rather wavy due to incorrect adjustments made by ear using sine sweeps and because EQ based on a test rig is not guaranteed to match your own ears. This flatness also lined up with the HiFiMan's expected deviations from neutral. As for the in-ear speaker responses, I later conducted a "threshold of hearing EQ" and determined that due to my in-ear measurements excluding the ear canal, there was actually a major mismatch between the actual at-eardrum response from measuring the speaker response with blocked canal in-ear mics and EQing the headphone measurement to show the same, whereby said threshold of hearing EQ ends up flattening things down closer to the V3.1 PEQ and HiFiMan tonalities but with the "HiFiMan dip" rather occurring around 1 kHz. See www.head-fi.org/threads/recording-impulse-responses-for-speaker-virtualization.890719/page-121#post-18027627 (post #1,812) for more details.

    I spotted an SG-1 in perfect condition for a reasonable price, but the carriage HUGE! It stuck out like an extra foot, and would have taken up more space on my desk than I was willing to give. I passed on it. I wonder if I should have brought it anyway and tried to trade carriages with someone?
