The Heil Pro Set 3 Headphones have about the most robust mechanical design of any headphones that I am aware of. With some modifications they can be made to sound 'OK' but mechanically they are very 'old-school' ... with metal (steel) parts for the headband assembly. If headphone manufacturers would stop trying to make their headphones look 'cool' .. and quit using plastic ... going to all-metal would eliminate most mechanical problems.
I agree. also those heils look very cool.
Morgan - Enjoyed watching you perform surgery on the Austrian Audio headphones. For several years I bought used headphones off eBay so I could find out how they sounded and also to examine their mechanical design. The problem with plastic parts under too much stress is one that I have seen in several headsets (mostly Sony if I remember correctly). My Austrian Audio Hi-X65 Headphones have not cracked yet and I am hoping that a 'de-stressing' process that I applied to the headband will make that less likely (I applied a counter-force to the center portion of the headband to flatten-out the bend a little bit so that the headphones 'naturally' apply less pressure to the headband when the headphones are on my head). - Paul
i was wowed when u said u found these more comfort than dt990 , is it regarding clamping force , great review
it's been a while but I think the cushions just squish a little better, the dt770 ones are pretty rigid. make sure you test for yourself, I'm just a dog man.
I'm not sure what issues you're hitting here, but it works perfectly for me on Arch with latest kernel/mesa. Games, AI, video encode, all of it works correctly.
not sure, then... I'm certainly going to keep at it, of course.
I wonder if A580 is any better ...
in terms of those drivers, I would doubt it. can't say for sure tho
I was like, what a useless review...like.
Have you ever "like" ...
THANK YOU for the demonstration. The spring loading is a GREAT design as it allows for a much wider gap for installing and inserting the inner ring that holds the pad onto the frame. Most have very narrow gaps which make it much more difficult to stretch and insert the holding ring into the gap. (this is proving a little difficult to put into words ...) - Contrast this with other cans, like AudioTechnica M50x - this is way easier to install replacement cushions. Much appreciated as this saves me from guessing, or getting it wrong - especially as it does not appear the higher end AA cans work this way. Whew ... better to know ahead of time. Thanks for the uptake helping me avoid damage to my set. TT
Appreciate the greese board expination, thank you for posting.
Thanks for that 👍
bought these in late Sept 2024 @ $125 and in my email to the company, it stated they are using the SR125 drivers (now?) but I know the older ones were either the SR60 or SR80 with an option to upgrade to their plus model which used the SR125 - so far I like them
So cute ❤
👍
I still use mine, they are excellent comms headphones, not so great for music, but they do work. Theyre only 40+ yrs old. Some people have too high expectations from $10 headphones when new in the 80's.
That knob is an industry standard mounting point for a boom mic. Koss still makes electrostatic phones.
I often forget electrostatics have existed for as long as they have, let alone that Koss was making them this far back. So strange.
This HD600 vs Hi-X65?
if you're asking preference, HD600 by a huge margin. it sounds better and there are replacement parts.
@@morgaboy01189 Oh, srry xD I mean, which one is better in sound and technicalities? Already have the HD600 og, sounds very good but I want another open back… like Hi-X65
@@bernaquinonezreveles2952 HD600 is also better there. It's a really good headphone.
Which one have more bass, the 60 or 55?
I don't remember, as both of my units are broken. I think 60.
@@morgaboy01189 😿😭😭 So sad :C I want a pair of Austrian audio headphones Thanks buddy Maybe is more bassy cuz al the tubes holes, i mean, the driver can move more air for better bass. Maybe that’s why the Hi-X65 is more warn
@@bernaquinonezreveles2952 Maybe, but it's all relative. None of the AA headphones are very bassy or warm in general, and they're all very close in sound profile.
@@morgaboy01189so sad :< What happened?
@@bernaquinonezreveles2952 they had a design fault, and I couldn't get replacement parts.
Wonder how it squigs.
I cannot be certain
had no idea there were types of drivers that I was unaware of the existence of still, this whole thing is so strange, wtf is up with the proportion of those ear cups?
I'm pretty sure this was just... an early enough design that people didn't know what they ere doing yet. Science had only been invented the previous year.
in all seriousness though, I'm wondering if this unit was meant to be compact for easy storage or something. not portable per se, as nothing was portable back then.
Amazing piece of history thx
Hi. These are old-school, high-impedance, "moving iron" headphones. Audio is run through the electromagnet in the middle of the headphone, and this creates a magnetic field that modulates the field from the permanent magnet behind the coil. This increases and decreases the pull on the thin steel diaphragm, causing it to flex from its own springiness, and thus produce sound. They do sound terrible, but they're very sensitive when driven by high-impedance sources, like crystal radios or low-powered tube radios. The pair you have are of better than average quality. The cheap ones were made from black bakelite (plastic), and were bulkier, heavier, and they were easily broken if dropped. The ones you have were likely made in the early to mid 1950's.
Nice! Thank you!
I was wondering about the age, the seller didn't specify. that timeframe makes sense.
It looks like an old phone, Do you think it's for listening to music? Connect it to a dial phone
I'm reasonably sure it was for radio or something like that, intended for just voice.
These are even better with Yaxi's, tones the insane treble down a bit, improves the comfort a lot and adds a wee bit more soundstage. One of my favourite headphones I've ever had regardless of price, but I tend to really enjoy bright, sparkly shit anyway.
Awesome find! 😃
I had these at one point, maybe the worst headphones I have ever owned, even sony's own ZX-310, which are considerably cheaper, sound way more balanced and tolerable. So weird that these are still being sold.
I want a some headphone from Austria n audio. Which is the best? Which have more sub bass?
If I remember correctly, the HI-X60 is probably what you're after. DEFINITELY try a demo unit first, they all have very unusual tunings.
@@morgaboy01189 Where I live, doesn’t exist a shop headphone shop :C Okies dokies! So, the HI-60 have the better Sub-bass, nice
Hey, I got my first Sennheisers HD560s and while I was admiring those I "accidentally" touched and pushed *lightly* with index finger on middle of that round plastic part over diaphgram, Im asking that is that hole big enough that finger actually reach diaphgram and damage it? Can't tell obviously is there anything wrong since did that first day.. damn :D
that's not a model I have so I can't say with certainty. HOWEVER my HD600 and my old HD450BT both had similar versions of that little circular guard feature over the diaphragm and both had enough of a gap that you couldn't really do any damage to the diaphragm without damaging that guard noticeably first. I would bet that yours are fine, especially if that side doesn't sound different or anything. I m not a doctor though.
@@morgaboy01189 Yeah, HD560 structure is almost like HD600. I might be neurotic, but can you actually hit/touch diaphragm thru that circular guard on a finger, not nail ofc? Great video by the way, there is actually time to see things and in different angles too + got some perspective how big things are. My OCD sure got some gas and it was hard to find pictures/video that show that gap between guard and diaphragm. HD560s disassembly seems to be harder than HD600/6XX and reassembly can be difficult.
@@Tomijee the guard looks like it's specifically designed to keep human fingers out. I wouldn't worry too much unless you got a tool after it. thanks, I'm doing my best to show the anatomy of these devices as best I can. your statement bout the 560S has me considering getting ahold of one and doing an episode for the science.
@@morgaboy01189 Go for it, HD560s are amazing! Ty for taking time to answer, im goig nuts sometimes with my "ocd"
That would be a "moving iron" driver, common in older (pre-WWII) radio headsets, low cost general purpose headsets, and older pre-1970s telephone handsets. Still in use in some very specialized instances today. Those Telex 610s were a common sight in school classrooms for many years, and are still available through certain channels as the Califone 610, albeit now with more modern transducers. If you're interested in messing about with moving iron drivers, pick up a Superex Sensiphone headset. They're all over eBay and a lot easier to disassemble and mod than the Telex sets.
nice! thanks.
You can buy new film for the bigshot at one instant but it’s expensive
you're right on both counts, thank you.
I've always wondered about koss's lesser known offerings, kinda makes sense that these ones aren't good considering how stupid cheap they are.
I was hopeful, but... yeah no...
why it using pcb? To connect 2 drivers in one cable? I mean direct connecting from driver to minijack can be better from audiophile points. Maybe its crossover?
nah, there aren't any components on it. I think it's just for manufacturing purposes, it looks like it's easier to mass-produce with the connections done like that.
@@morgaboy01189 So as i expected this pcb is only to connect 2 drivers of speakers easier and put them in one cable instead of 2 for more comfort use for many customers.
Nice review! Found it after buying the new Refine variant. If these sound as good as i suspect and are as comfortable as I hope, they'll be a great all arounder for general desktop use.
its fun tinkering with stuff
I tabbed through the whole video and still couldnt tell you why its not working. you never showed the monitor if it would POST or not or any lights on the mobo. I've worked on the same mobo by msi and it may need a BIOS update. other than that you can try reseating the ram with 2 fingers(thumb and index) one on each end of the ram and get it to click in place at the same time. Check the cpu for bent pins under magnifying glass(usually desktop one not handheld but either work). Also interesting way to apply thermal paste!
3:04 man i was sitting here like "oh no, not my archnemesis, finger oils!"
yep, oops...
WTF what a Amateur really dude ???? think you need to watch a bit of linus tech tips or something something so painful to watch
bro i skipped through this, dude do you have non conductive standoffs to attach the mobo to the case, if not it's gonna short the whole thing out
Yeah... I have a anxiety watching this o.O
Understood
I think I've got it covered. we'll find out, I guess.
@@morgaboy01189 you can use a layer of clear acrylic spray paint to try to create a non conductive surface for the mobo to sit on, or glue a piece of balsa or something jesus
@@TfearWasHere to be blunt, I already have most of the filming done on the next episode. unless something changes, I already know whether the brass standoffs work or not. no spoilers though.
oh my god i just about had a stroke watching this wtf
Yeah when he dropped that CPU lock thingy lol😂
You also dont need to worry about using only 1 of the 2 cables for motherboard. i built a pc 5 days ago and it only needs 8. The other 8 u plug in if u are planning on extreme overclocking. My pcu also only had one cable so got sad untill i reached out to the facebook pc building group that told me that usualy motherboard have 2 but only need 1. 2 is for overclocking most of the time. worst that can happen if u try is that the pc dies of to low power... so its worth trying.
Your ram should be in slot 2 and 4 not 1 and 3 :D easy fix :D good job man!
One 8 pin EPS (CPU) connector pushes 192 watts give or take. 7900x has a max tdp of 175 watts, and it will reach that. Even just enabling XMP will push it even a little past that. Unless that PSU is at least 80+ Gold, i think you're making the right call to wait and use 2.
Compatibility compatibility research research are the main components of the build saves money and time 😮 .
true that
inb4 a 5" grinder is pulled out 😂
the old PSU (that are cheap mustard and ketchup like you have) usually have 1 8pin and 1 4pin, the 4 pin fits in the eight, so you need to use both or a MODERN PSU PCI4(i believe its called)
Interesting, not tested myself with newer one, but seems they maybe cut cost and made the grilles thinner for newer models? I've had the original marble HD600 for 14 years of daily use, never had a dent in the metal, also have sanded lightly a handful of times to remove rust and still no issues with strength. There is no give to the metal when I press on mine with decent force.
they must have made it thinner then, not that I can blame them... little cheaper, little lighter, it's not a structural bit so... fair enough, to me.
22:25 - That is a PCI-e 6+2 pin, please do not try to use this in the 8 pin CPU power connector, however the board /should/ be fine with only one of the 8 pin CPU power connectors plugged in
Yeah any way I looked at it, it didn't look like it would work. I figured it had to be something else. I did actually consider trying to get it to go with only one of the connectors, but the manual for the board seems to say to use both. new power supply is arriving today anyway, so... we'll see what happens
@@morgaboy01189 Yeah if the new PSU has two EPS connectors (the 8 pin CPU power connectors) it's for sure not a bad idea to have them both plugged in to be on the safe side. I've never seen a single CPU system which actually needed two EPS connectors unless it was an extreme overclocking rig but some of the Ryzen 9's can be very power hungry so if you have two might as well plug them both in
I hate how they are still using those plastic parts when they advertise "metal where it's needed" This was an issue with the x55 from day one. Hell. When those exact designers came from AKG, they had the exact same weak spot on models such as the AKG K550 which was the sound signature and headphone the Austrian Audio-line was based off. I am not sure why they thought it would be a good idea to continue with poor design. Love the sound but those two plastic bits won't last. Not in my experience.
Yeah, they really played up the metal in the advertising blurbs, and they even got me- that section LOOKS like it's metal, they really matched the surface finish rather well, and who would expect the most structural part to be plastic when it's surrounded by metal?.
great video, quick question, there is any mod do you suggest to improve the sound?
I'm not specifically aware of any on this design. the most likely candidate would probably be aftermarket ear cushions, there may or may not be others.
@@morgaboy01189 thanks for your response
