The Rock Island Argus, Moline, Illinois, Tuesday, June 26, 1990; Cycle Destroyed Roy’s Reconciliation With His Wife--Rock N' roller Roy Orbison’s divorce from his wife Claudette left him shattered but their reconciliation set the stage for an even greater tragedy This is part three of a five-part excerpt firm the book "Dark Star The Roy Orbison Story” by Ellis Amburn--Roy Orbison was as far away from his broken home as he could get. Touring Australia with the Rolling Stones, Rolf Harris and Dionne Warwick, he accepted second billing to the Stones since there was no longer any question about English supremacy on the rock scene. The British Invasion was crushing everything in its path. But the Australian tour was a triumph for Roy, paving the way for a No. 1 hit, “Penny Arcade”, which Americans ignored on its release in the US four years later. At the conclusion of the tour, Roy returned to his lonely home in Hendersonville, TN, but the memory of Claudette was too painful. He leased the house and took an apartment in Nashville. Now over his initial bitterness and resentment, Roy realized he was still in love with Claudette. In Jacinto City in 1965, Claudette Orbison gave birth to their third son, Wesley Kelton. Roy came to see his children and these visits upset both Claudette and him. Divorce hadn’t changed the fact that their lives remained profoundly unsettled. Though Roy pretended not to care for Claudette anymore, it worried him to see her at loose ends. He began to return more often and occasionally it was like old times. Reunited in London on February 13, 1966, was a joyous day for Roy and the entire Frady family, Claudette’s kin. They came to hear him sing at the big Fifth Annual Go Texas Hootenanny at Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston. The hootenanny went on all through the day and into the night and during the break between shows Roy took his band and the Frady clan to dinner at Nifa’s Restaurant. Roy said he was going to buy brand-new motorcycles for everybody in the family who wanted one. The next day, Claudette, Chester Orba, and Sammy, Roy’s brother, accompanied him to a two-story Houston showroom where Roy turned them loose to pick out their dream machines. Claudette and Roy chose new BMWs, the Rolls-Royces of 1960s motorcycles. Shortly afterwards, while Roy was on a tour in England, he had a serious motorcycle accident and broke his ankle. It marked the beginning of a tragic chain of events that would alter his life forever. Claudette now began to fear that Roy could permanently damage his ankle by continuing to perform while it was mending. She decided to fly to London, and she caught up with the tour in Chester. Roy was on crutches and severely drugged and Claudette was tired and haggard, but they flew into each other’s arms. Roy told the London Daily Express, “We both suddenly realized we didn’t want to be apart - and that was it. It was wonderful to see Claudette again.” They celebrated Roy’s 30th birthday in a restaurant in London’s Soho district and they decided to remarry. Roy told The Daily Sketch, “It was a hush-hush affair. Only the essential witnesses were there.” Addicted to danger, at last Roy had his family back around him and life seemed secure again. He was only 30 years old and had already known the extremes of poverty and great wealth, loneliness and the companionship of family, and now his life seemed to be on an even keel. Roy even managed to forgive Braxton Dixon, whose affair with Claudette had contributed to their divorce. According to Dixon’s wife, Anna, “Roy told me, ‘Anna, you love him, and I love her, and they done wrong, but if you’re willing to forgive, so will I.' ” But Anna had not forgotten what she and her family had been put through and when she saw Claudette shopping in a store one afternoon, she confronted her. Anna remembered saying, “Claudette, I’m 17 years older than you and I loved you like a sister. You’ve been cruel. The Lord will take care of you.” Anna’s grim prophecy was soon realized. Claudette’s time was quickly running out because of the dangerous toys she and Roy played with. Roy was addicted to fast cars, powerful motorcycles, and danger, and Claudette always went along for the ride. Roy was a show-off and perhaps a little dangerous with cars but the deadliest vehicle on his property would prove to be the motorcycle he’d bought for Claudette. She took it out on June 6, 1966, when they rode in tandem to the National Drag Races in Bristol, TN, some 200 miles away. After the races, they started back home and by dusk, they were roaring through the countryside. A few miles from home, at a Gallatin intersection, Roy told Claudette he was going to show her a shortcut and pulled ahead of her. Roy took off so fast that he was already out of sight when Claudette pulled into the intersection and was struck by a pickup truck. Claudette was thrown in the air, came down on the hood, and finally was caught under the truck. She lay on the pavement in front of York’s Grocery. A man ran into the street, knelt beside her, and tried to find her pulse. Someone called an ambulance and almost immediately, the siren could be heard approaching. A Gallatin woman named Aline Hampton stopped her car and got out to see if she could help. Claudette’s white pants suit was ripped open and Ms Hampton placed her sweater over Claudette’s exposed body. “She was blue,” Ms Hampton said, “like a bad bruise, solid blue all over. I thought she was already dead.” Roy had gone only a few blocks when he heard the siren and sped back to the intersection, arriving at the same time as the ambulance. Remaining on his motorcycle, he looked at Claudette’s inert body lying on the highway. Claudette could not be moved, he was told, and he finally dismounted and went inside York’s Grocery. Someone brought his motorcycle over to the store. “He sat there paralyzed,” Ms Hampton said, “and laid his head down.” When he was informed that Claudette could at last be moved, Roy went outside and crawled into the ambulance after her. They rushed her to Sumner Memorial Hospital on Hartsville Pike. Doctors worked on her for an hour, but her liver was badly damaged, and it was hopeless. Claudette Orbison was dead at 25. “And then it was left to me to tell our three boys,” Roy said to a London Daily Sketch reporter 15 years later. “I explained to Roy DeWayne, and he seemed to understand.” According to Anna Dixon, it was exactly six weeks since she’d told Claudette, “The Lord will take care of you.” “When my brother heard she’d died in a motorcycle accident,” Anna recalled, “he said ‘Anna don’t predict anything about me’.”
