Time Commanders: Battle of Qadesh 1/5
What an awesome history teacher!
The surprised look on Eddie Mair's face when that kid was about to drop an 'F' bomb pre-watershed on BBC 2. Priceless.
Interesting the kids had the right plan but instead went with the plan of their teacher which was wrong.
Sega/Creative Assembly, please put those Time Commanders exclusive factions and units into the game as well as the units from the other tv show that featured Rome Total War gameplay.
Rome Total War came out in 2004, I think they may have stopped supporting it.
1:40 never expect what your enemy is gonna do he will always surprise you
The worst guy you had to choose was the arrogant boy as a general
I don't think they change history that's a dpangerious thing
It's the guy before he had a sex change . I'm not against him her . Quite a knolageable person no doubt about that
who
?
Oh Lynette Nusbacher just looked it up
I do wish fleeing, routed troops would be shown dropping weapons, especially their pikes and long spears. This is a general thing with the Time Commanders series.
The problem frankly was their infantry was garbage. Those axemen walked through the front of a wall of spears and cut an infantry force twice their size apart. The lack of intervention from the chariots prove decisive, but the problem seemed to be that the infantry were about as effective as a bunch of men with pitchforks.
Wow, THIS is evil! Why the heck did the second Egyptian army come up from their rear? They are on the right side of the river, all of Ramesses forces should be on the left side. The position of the Hittites and Ra division as the the marching columns they had to smash in were historically accurate so far. But if the reinforcement troop was Ramesses' own Amun division it should have come from their encampment in the north of the battlefield. If it had been the Amurru mercenaries they should have come from the north-west. If it had been Ptah division (which historically arrived at the very end of the battle and didn't see much of the fighting) it should have come from the south-west. So why the heck are Egyptian troops coming from the East? This is Hittite core territory! Moving the direction of the enemy reinforcements just to sandwich the team is a really dark move! With all the Egyptions to the west, it would have been difficult enough already. I'm also a little bit irritated why they didn't throw them the boon of Ra division's chariots falling into their trap. They gave the morons of Tigranocerta the boon of successfully 'startling' the Roman army by letting them run circles just because they were attacked by two archer units. And this is Ra division, which historically wasn't commanded by Ramesses and whose officers abandoned it the moment the Hittite chariots began their surprise attack. Without any command structure left it would have been entirely possible for some overeager charioteers to fall for the trick thinking that they're chasing off the Hittites. This is a good team, even though the pupils lack confidence. By all means, they shouldn't have made the battle more difficult than it already was historically.
I'm confused. I've always understood that the P-tah division did indeed catch the Hittite chariots in the rear, whilst the Seti division arrived from the coast to the west. This is broadly accurate. That said, maybe it's the layout of this map and the fact that here the Hittites do have infantry (unlike on the real battlefield) that confuses things.
Yes they did, but at that point the battle was fought at an entirely different place. This is the picture I've got from the sources: 1. The Hittite chariot force sets over the river and completely obliterates Ra division in a surprise attack. 2. Without waiting for the infantry support to set over they chased down the fleeing survivors northwards towards the camp of Amun division which is commanded by Ramesses himself. 3. Ramesses forms a shield wall around his camp, but it gets smashed in and chaos breaks out. In the confusion Ramesses regroups Amun division's chariots and survivors of Ra division and counter-attacks when the Hittites started looting the camp, effectively driving them back out into the plains. 4. At that point Ptah division arrives from the south. The Hittites are then surrounded by Ramesses and Amun division from the north-west and Ptah division from the south-west, with the river to the east. Under hard pressure and conditions very unsuitable for chariot fighting, the Hittites abandon their vehicles and try their luck swimming across the river. 5. During this entire engagement, the Hittite infantry force was sitting east of the river without seeing any battle whatsoever. Ramesses realizes that he can't siege the city with the devastating losses to Amun and Ra division and retreats, having technically won the battle, but lost any hope to further hold the position against the remaining Hittite forces. That's why I say it is absurd that Egyptian reinforcements came form the EAST of all things. The layout of the battlefield with its starting positions were fine as it is to portray the attack on Ra division.
Camon kick some ass wild you at control. Lol lol lol
Here's a simple battle effective plan. 1. Send everything across the Ford to break up the Egyptian columns. If this is done properly it's game over for the gypos. 2. If the gypos fomed a line, ram the chariots through the line, followed up closely by the boys on foot, Game over Ramses! 3. Put the Spearman in the ford in phalanx formation to face the gypo reinforcement. skewer them with arrows and slaughter them!
didn't Hittites have iron?
+Wall Mall Not to much at that time, and the Iron Working was not good enough to produce high quality product. In less then a century The Sea People most of which had blacksmiths with better skills, armed their armies with better quality iron weapons and that gave them advantage, so their invasion was the end of the Hittites.
Posh twats.
Well, I guess Ramesses' BS propaganda was right after all, he did win Qadesh. lol
Their only hope was to disrupt the unprepared Egyptian with their chariots closely supported by all their infantry. Crush one army, then turn and deal with the other.
They should have kept reserves behind, Their reserve only on had James light infantry, Hittite army was larger
Even though Time Commanders aired first...
Is it even possible to have a battle without strategy? If you don't have tactics, NOTHING happens. Because attacking/defending are tactics in themselves.
Time commanders? This show is just ripping off decisive battles?
the thing that annoyed me the most about this series was that the experts didn't chew them out for all their mistakes, they would just let some slide and make it sound like the team didn't mess up in a HUGE way that cost them the battle right from the word go
"They are stopping. What a dirty trick!" By God, seems like that Rameses II., one of the greatest pharaohs of all time is not a complete moron! XD
Ramses was grossly overrated. (I know I'm replying to a 5 year old comment.)
the battle of qadesh is one of the oldest recorded battles in the world. it has long been seen as the first real battle with tactics in it. 1274 b.c!
so qadesh is in syria?
yes
Because this is the firat season. They changed things alittle in the second.
well shouldn't that be a lesson learned ? nothing in the world's fair especially in love and war
and also @timonsolus, well isn't that a philosophical but sad truth how the way the world works sometimes :\
and seeing that your post is a year old, probably 22 now ! :D
lol don't mind him. but i think what he's trying to say is that while you are correct, this battle takes place way before Alexander conquered Egypt, meaning it hasn't yet been Hellenised, and so the representation here is accurate. Rather, the representation in RTW isn't the authentic one. I gather the developers did that in order to boost profits (e.g. people like to see stereotypical depictions of ancient Egyptians rather than the real thing)
hmm why is the format a little different (in the beginning) ? and also why isn't richard hammond the host
historically egyptians won.but rameses the second lost enough men that he couldnt take qadesh and siege it
The team didn't know the Egyptian reinforcements were going to arrive in their rear (that's not the way it happened historically.) Also the Hittite pikemen had long spears, but no shields and poor armour, making them very vulnerable to the Egyptian archers. A lot of the pikemen got shot down by archers in this battle while they were advancing. So using them to hold the river crossing might only result in the Egyptians massing archers on the opposite bank and shooting them across the river.
I think a defensive strategy would have worked better, after they lost initiative, since they had phalanx units who would have been able to defend the narrow crossing…and when the small second army arrived, they should have attacked it and killed it first, while holding the main army at the crossing with some phalanx units
Its the fualt of them both...the girl could not think for herself becuse of what you say,but she also refused to act even when she was told what to do,because she let her self be panic striken
@deathpunish2 They never conquered it. They were seen as liberators by the inhabitants against the Persian Empire.
I thought spearmen were supposed to be able to pin cqb infantry back unscathed - instead they got raped. Makes no sense. Wtf.
Lol :P this is my school :P
In real, quarter of the Hatti forces were in Kadeş forth and third-quarter was out. The Egyptians were coming to invade the forth and city.
@professorhalloween just the wrong plan in the end.
Its disappointing that their communication and organization broke down, I think they still could have pulled it out if the flanking maneuver had come sooner.
Team seems organized and decently knowledgeable. Better than others I've seen.
The weirdo in purple is disturbingly ugly. Nusbacher brings all the charisma and wit.
their infantry is superior to the egyptians since they can get in phalanx. plus the eqyptians have very light armoured infantry an only 1 elite guard unit
this was pretty good i thought they were going to win for a while but there infantry dident seem to be very good
i have not watch this video yet, n yet i get the feeling its already going to go downhill
those scouts look suspiciously like brutii equites ....
@deathpunish2 Only by about 900 years or so. . . .
@deathpunish2 hence the chariots, desert axemen, lack of hellenistic phallangites and hoplitae
@0xXkojiroXx0 Creepy, dude. Creepy.
The ginger chick is terrifying
