The owner of this channel is stating a fact. This woman was not a victim and must take part of the blame in this situation. I know this because I saw it happen with a female friend of mine, long ago. So very many similar details with the way the adultery progressed. Much older man with a significant age gap between the two. A man who was an academic and a bi-vocational pastor. I knew the man, too. After she graduated from college, things spiralled out of control. I can also tell you that Jennifer likely toyed with the idea of enticing an older man as far back as high school. My friend had a steady boyfriend in high school and college, but exhibited questionable behavior around male teachers. In fact, if you pressed Jennifer in a counseling session, she might have to admit this as well, even if it took months of seeing a Christian counselor who could hopefully get to the root of the emotional dysfunction. Eventually, I reluctantly concluded that my friend liked the challenge of the "power imbalance." These type of women get off on it, even luxuriate in pushing every boundary. They really like the fact that they are being lavished with expensive jewelry and trips. Naturally, they aren't going to bother with men who have no money. My friend did well with her career, enjoyed her freedom, but there's that wanting to feel like a woman, to have a man take care of you. And in the rare post-college visits we had, my friend threw out plenty of hints about her situation. I have no idea how Steve Lawson got tangled up in this mess. It seems for years, he did not scruple to protect his reputation, and therefore did not feel he had to follow the standard any accountability partner would have advised for his ministries, had he asked. I wonder if Steve saw himself above all of this, like thinking that being proactive was for losers, not for celebrity preachers of his notoriety and influence. I am not sure that Steve will be able to hide forever. I hope he repents. I hope his former mistress will take advantage of competent biblical counseling.

There is nothing wrong with traveling preachers. The Apostle Paul traveled a bit without falling into sin. What Lawson did was not “falling,” into sin. It was living in sin for years while standing in the pulpit. That takes a level cynicism that is hard to grasp.

How long did this affair go on? I think that’s an important part of the information that needs to be known. It’s one thing to fall into sin; it’s another thing to live in sin for years while standing in the pulpit and preaching as if you were walking with Christ. The former can happen to any Christian. The latter happens to those who have no conscience before God.

Here’s what has been happening. Joel Webbon has annoyed so many people since becoming “popular” amongst reformed evangelicals. He seems disingenuous and self serving. He has done all he could to try to be a big name, starting when he couldn’t make in the charismatic vineyard movement so we went to the non-denom and finally found traction in the reformed camp. His rise was going well but he was exposed for the self serving hireling he is when he took a JMac sermon clip out of text and tried his effort at being controversial by calling MacArthur’s eschatology “loser theology” and ruffled some feathers. This has led to where we are now where people are looking for something to jump on that could lead to Webbon going back to the silent corner.
