Budget Turbo BMW E28 V2 Build Overview
Another great how-to as usual. I appreciate all the valuable knowledge. Your videos have helped immensely throughout all the different renditions of my build. If by chance you are taking requests, a video on putting the oil pump shaft/gear assembly back in would be even more appreciated lol.
I will give it a go !
Can I use one of these on my GC8 rebuild?
Have you used those rods before…..maxspeeding?
My first build with these. So far they measure up great
All of your videos are very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
@@TurbineResearch Hi i wanted to ask if why my tunerstudio dont have an option to smooth cells? Even interpolate horizontal and vertical. I really need help in checking my tune file for my sr20det megasquirt2. Would you pls help me? Thank you!
if i wanted to make a fender cf with like 4 layer for strenght, do i use the oem part for the mold and use a product that will let me remove it off the fender ?? ive seen ppl use foam cad and laser , but us normal folks dont have that and im sure iyll be more expensive tobhave someone to make u a foam cad mold and u diy the rest
so what do you do for the lower boost levels to know it is safe? say i am running 20psi and 14 degrees is the max at 20 psi. but the track will only take 15psi? how do i know where to put the timing at 15 psi?
You just set the advance for the maximum boost that you will run then interpolate (taper) the advance from highest boost to lowest boost
One thing I don’t understand. So the uaEFI is in parallel with the stock ECU and its driving ignition and fueling. But the stock ECU still sees the factory upstream O2 sensor. So if you’re targeting a richer AFR during closed loop boost (part throttle, but in boost), isn’t the stock ECU going to freak out? Because the upstream O2 sensor is detecting the richer condition, it’s going to try and trim it back to 14.7, but because stock ECU no longer has fuel control, the negative fuel trims will have no affect. Thus the stock ECU will keep trying to trim it lean more and more until it throws a CEL. How does one get around this?
In my testing if you have most of the idle and part throttle (normal out of boost parts of the map) targeting stoich or near stoich you won’t get a check engine light. The ecu expects the conditions to be rich under wot so it doesn’t seem to cause too many issues. You just need to tune the parallel ecu to mimic the stock ecu in all areas other than boost. But if you do get a check engine light it doesn’t matter being that the parallel ecu is in full control (other than the lights on the dash being on) hope that helps it’s not a big problem in my experience
@@TurbineResearch are you in the Turbo 5vz Facebook group?
quick question, I always see the videos of making the pieces but what about the piece that you are separating the carbon fiber from along with the setup you got going on there. looking at making some fenders for a project car (also the weave of the CF you are using).
Check out the easy composites ltd RUclips channel. That’s where I learned how to make molds
Would you ever sell this as a full setup?
No plans to make any but i gave all the info to show others how to make them
👍💪
Completely blown away just subscribed and turned on the notification for future videos! Thanks again
Thanks for watching!
Love your 5vzfe videos keep them coming. Thank you!
Thank you 🙏 I’m glad there are lots of cool projects going on for the 5vz community
I appreciate you making these videos and supporting the 5VZFE platform.
Thanks so much for supporting the channel! 🙏🙏🙏
The Ruse controls the idle or the oem ecu? I believe that the IAC is PWM?
Using the rusefi parallel to the stock ecu you can just let the stock ecu run the idle control
I learned a lot from this video! Makes me want to try it vs keeping my fuel tech ft450 on my 4runner. I don’t know how to tune and I have this random miss which is making me lose hope with my turbo runner. I also can’t idle it around 750rpm because I don’t have enough outputs to control my stock IAC valve. Would using this parallel help me utilize the stock iac valve?
Yes you can use the stock computer to control all the idle and warmup circuit for idle control
I’m going MS3 Pro, I was wondering how would I wiring up the D585 LS coils to my stand alone ecu? Also if I would need like a separate module like a Quadspark from AMP EFI?
The d585 coils are “smart” coils meaning they have an igniter built in so you can just wire them directly to the ms3 pro without any additional hardware
Would I just put coil #1 (closest to the radiator) to ignition A from the back plate of MS3 Pro?
@@TurbineResearch and so forth?
@@cristianavila5091 every ms product has an installation guide. They usually have really good diagrams
Absolutely love your work. I also have a 5VZ-FE, 2001 4Runner Supercharged. Can you post some videos of the new ECU running/with the tuning software and your take on it? Does the new one account for knock sensors?
Absolutely! I will be showing the process the entire way in future videos
Did you share the IGF signal from the igniter with both ecu’s? If you were to switch to smart coils what would you do about the IGF signal so that the factory ecu wouldn’t freak out?
I am just using the factory coils and the igf is only connected to the stock ecu. Seems to be working well that way
@@TurbineResearch I figured that’s what you were doing. I plan on running MaxxEcu in parallel with a factory RC200T ecu so the factory ecu can control the factory CANBUS system while the MaxxEcu controls the 2J and 8HP70 that I’ll be swapping in. Unfortunately MaxxEcu doesn’t support the RC platform yet so parallel or custom CAN protocol is the only choice for me.
@ sounds like a cool project
I am about to run a maxecu sport on my turbo 5vz fe, was wondering what kind of issues has your friend with the turbo 5vz fe run into when making a base map, looking for some ball park number for the ignition timing just to get started. Thanks for the project updates too
I have a video where I go over all the base settings on the Maxxecu Mini you can take a look at for reference. We didn’t have any major issues other than running out of fuel injector at around 8psi of boost and the 5vz seems to be pretty knock sensitive and doesn’t want a lot of ignition advance under 2500rpm and lower boost on pump gas. The base map had 21 or 22 degrees of advance at 100kpa and 14deg at 200kpa as a safe start
Thanks for the info, gives me a good reference point.@TurbineResearch
I hope you do a speeduino vs rusefi comparison, since they both use tuner studio. would be nice to see the pros and cons of each.
rusefi is way ahead. megasquirt, vems, etc, etc use tuner studio.
@@kaplis117 they are both budget, but what makes it so far ahead?
@@turboimport95 hardware and software is better, functionality also a lot better. Built in wbo, etb, flex fuel, egt, etc. You can download tuner studio and go through config options on both ecus.
My experience tuning speeduino has been been mostly negative but I know people out there are having good luck with them. I would like to try a drop bear but at the time I don’t have any plans to run them
@@TurbineResearch I looked into the rusefi and it seems more refined/polished. The speeduino looks more rough around the edges etc.
Love both, Especially maxxecu since it's from my country. As you say the only drawback against the uaEFI is I/O You would really need go with a maxxecu sport to get somewhat even in I/O. But then the uaEFI is something amazing for the kind of money. You need somewhat more knowledge to work it but hey under 200$ you cant ask for much more than what you get. Love them both Looking forward seeing you uaEFI videos.
Thanks for watching! The maxxecu has been awesome 👏
Very good clear for the money
I have an evo n in the jap scene people are paying 5 or £6,000 for an ecu! Some at about £2,000 could the speeduino be good enough for the evo with a few mods?
Super interested in the plastigauge vs actual tools discrepancies
Just made a video of trying a comparison I will release later. The plastigauge is not bad actually
I was wondering what rod and piston you are using because it's hard to find good combos for the m20 with that stroke. I currently have an m20b28 with 130mm rods and n55 pistons running 2.2 boost (3mm mls) and I have run up to 2.8 and bent a rod and changed them with the piston. I wanna order some forged internals and thinking of going the 3.0 route so that's why I'm asking
I have maxpeedingrods and CP pistons. There are lots of good options for rods and pistons. Eagle rods, pure tech Sweden, k1 …. All kinds
Thank you so much for the content! As a former owner of an ‘87 325iS, the M20 holds a special place in my heart. Great motor.
Stay tuned there is more on the way !
Put a pulsar on it
Send me one !
@TurbineResearch nice try lol. I have a g30-770 and my car made 672 whp and this is season #2
Any more updates on your uaefi progress? I have one that i am wiring to a honda obd1 breakout board similar to the one you showed in your other video.
Updates are coming this week ! Stay tuned
Hi Is that a turbo engine? If it is than what turbo piston are you using?
Cp Carrillo pistons from VAC Motorsports
Ok.If you don't mind can you send me a picture of the piston spec sheet? I'm from South Africa and I'm also building a 3.0l m20 turbo build.
These tips helped my startup a lot. However, how would i address a high idle? After startup it bounces between 2500 and 3k which is a lot for my little Miata engine to run on until warmup. Do you have a video on that topic? Thanks!
Thank you for these videos. I was looking forward to these updates on the your M20 31L build.
Thanks for watching!

Awesome! They had some awesome deals going 🙌
Thanks for sharing, much appreciated!
Absolutely! Enjoy!
Great vid mate
Thanks for watching!
Do you know Metric Mechanic M20 booklet, google it. They are using custom pistons and other modifications.
If you look into the Mahle online piston catalog you can get the correct information that would have given you what you just measured.
I’m trying to show a practical example of how this actually fits in the engine being that the information on this combination is non existent and non standard
What are your opinions on AMC heads? Better than stock after porting? prone to the usual cracking? What will you be using?
I haven’t used an amc head but I would definitely try one. Having a brand new cylinder head for a 35 year old engine is awesome imo. This car has an 885 head
Finally, solid info on this funky combo that isn’t just hearsay!
Literally the exact reason I made this 🤘
Hey, when i decel rpm to target they dip to 500 then back to 900 which is target, any tip on this? Very thanks! AWESOME CHANNEL!
Interesting, was wondering if i could get a turbo cam cuz i wanna turbo eventually but don't have the money for the whole package
That’s what I did
I've got MsUltra and don't have the extra tabs that you have including the Canbus tab. Any idea?
Did you need to tune at all? Or you just used e85 corrections and the ecu adapted automatically? How did you tune the engine for the new fuel?
As long as your base fuel table is tuned correctly the multiplier for ethanol based on the sensor output is generally pretty close to
Dude I’m loving the build!! I think I want to replicate this for my E30 and I’d love to pick your brain
Question, I'm getting ready to start my car with a maxxecu race version. I see that most of the outputs are ground controlled by the ECU. I have everything wired up and I used the fusebox from the maxxecu website. my fuel pump and engine fan are not coming on when I go key on, engine off. Do I need to turn these on through the mtune software?
Yes you need to setup all additional inputs and outputs in mtune under their respective sections
@@TurbineResearch thank you
Is that for the Supra look familiar 😮 l. What epoxy do i need for a carbon repair
There are hundreds of kinds of resin for various kinds of processes and degrees of quality. It's an extensive question. But you can make basic carbon fiber parts with a general room temp cure clear laminating resin.
@ yea I’ve learned a lot since this found out for what I’m repairing they used polyester resin and a gel coat on top.
Would you happen to know how it is applied to non-linear tables (Turbo, Alpha-N ITB)? I tried it with my ITB setup but it will mess up tight spots way down in the load range.
i use feeler gauges, but this might be little more accurate
Just run a bigger ring gap and add a moroso crankcase vacuum pump.
🤙🤘🤘
Mosley Motors makes a sweet bolt on kit using the Sniper and they package it with the HEI distributor and even an adapter to use the original air cleaner.
We are using the redline kit that does similar. Stay tuned for videos on it
