[Extra] Prehistorik 2 (DOS) (Expert) - Minimum% + Zero Score Challenge
This is another extra video of Prehistorik 2 about zero score and minimum% challenge. In this game you gain scores by collecting foods and defeating enemies, and it is also important to gain many scores in this game since you get an extra life every 250000 score. But is it possible to beat it without getting a single score at all? The definition of zero score is avoid collecting food and hitting enemies (can be technically considered as pacifist challenge save for the need to defeat bosses to make progress) as much as possible, with exceptions for items that do not contribute to score and percentage (especially weapons since some bosses are impossible to be defeated without collecting wea...

Most of the time the clip will cause the character to die from touching the spike due to how the hitbox wo...

My game when my mother PC still used dos/WS ... lol
Thank you very much for sharing your efforts in this walk-through, I was very impressed watching each trick you did, including the final dances! Haha. I met this game in 2005, the hybrid version to be more specific, and never could play the expert mode, nor pass of the ice storm level, not even reach to 100% in any level! But now I could know how my favorite game is, in all it's splendor. All thanks to you 😊 Only thing I'm curious about... what would do that assembly code when you compile or run it wherever it must? Have you tried it?
You're welcome, thanks for the nice comment, I really appreciate it. For the assembly code at the end of credits, I never tried it myself, but I heard that it has something to do with resetting or restarting your computer when it is run but I'm not too sure about it. The assembly code is compiled here and can be obtained from this website if you want to try it, but I would be caution a bit just in case it causes issues to computer: sfprod.shikadi.net/games/pre2.htm
ZOMG!!!!! I never knew 'bout the hangglider bouncy bonus! Awesome!!! 😮😮😮😮😮
The jumping sequence was insane, I remember it playing as a kid. And I never knew it had such good sounds and music, because we had only PC speaker. I loved the pig levels 😀
I prefer the first one, but this is also a cool game.

I always wondered if I manged to get everything in this game way back in the day when there was 0 guides for this stuff at least not at my disposal anyway. Turns out I did get everything. Also, while I know about the difference of Stage 3's color thing with cracked or non cracked, I actually like the Pink one more as it added some unique variety... Made me think maybe the sun was too hot or something lmao That... and I also disliked Stage 3 because of the split exits not allowing me to get both... Making me choose instead. After having gotten all stuff, I simply began breaking the Enemy Ai boundaries like getting the Gorilla Boss out of bounds to areas it should not be among other comedic things lmao
Can't you get around 150% in Level 7 (Penguins)? Correct me if I'm wrong. Good job though.
Thanks! The percentage is correctly displayed as 100% if you get everything in Level 7 in non-cracked version, 155% is the maximum if you played in cracked version by Hybrid most likely due to corruption which also causes Level 3 to become pink. This version is unfortunately very widespread in internet for a long time before the non-courrpted version is restored recently.
@@VidGamGoodGame Thanks for such a quick answer. But where can I get the non-cracked version?
You can get it here: gamesnostalgia.com/game/prehistorik-2

1:08:10 Ohhh my god, that's genius! ... I really struggled finding a way to access all (countable) items without ever having to die, I only thought of that jump using the annoying bat, but this spider trick is amazing.
52:03 Ahh so you can actually make those jumps easier without getting blown by the wind, I couldn't do them consistently enough and said screw those items, out of frustration heh.
In level 3 there appears to be an unreachable bomb somewhere in the sky, according to the maps you can find online. I suppose it really is 100% impossible to get, like unless you give yourself a glider but there's no such cheat code for that.
Wow, I actually didn't notice the grenade floating in the map of level 3 until you pointed it out. Well, I guess that's probably the only item we can't legitimately obtain without hacks, since the level does not have a glider or even a flying bee or bat enemy...
26:11 Interesting, that part is very unstable with the bee because you might still kill it by accident or dude may touch the spikes due to finicky collision, I'm sure you already know and hence why you went with a dinosaur instead, that's so much more clever. I remember feeling proud of myself for finding these several secrets on my own heh.
Yeah, I like how the gap there is made very subtle so that you can lead the dinosaur to there, its a very clever hidden trick by the developers.
8:58 Huh???? I never knew of that shortcut, all this time I thought 98% was max without having to respawn to grab the candle, and I tried many things, like using a spider to jump back to the checkpoint, but without success. Although I cannot reproduce your fall on my end, cause dude keeps touching the spikes. Is it like one-pixel precise close to the platform you have to drop off?
Yeah, the "shortcut" is a bit of sequence break that i accidentally discovered when doing speedrunning. You have to immediately press left after falling to keep hugging the wall, and even then it doesn't always work and need to hope that you are lucky enough to not touch the spike collision when falling. Video here for the trick: m.ruclips.net/video/R5axDcewqX8/видео.html

Excellent work, m'man, I _knew_ y'had it in you! Wheh, I bet you COULD finish the game again usin' the joystick only wit' your teeth!
For some reason, the snowy levels are the most atmospheric amongst all. When y'climb up to the very top to the bonus area, and y'see those snow-peaked summits all around...it was simply enthralling ☺😊
I never collect the hidden weapons from that niche because why...next level y'll lose the axe anyways (unless you deliberately skip two BONUS letters and a hidden large food).

3:45 there is an unreachable platform on the right. Did you miss something there?
Nope, its actually the same platforms that have the giant banana and grape which can be reached using teleport. Here's the picture of entire level layout which should give a clearer understanding of the location of platforms: pre2.mine.nu/levels/level1.png
What the video creator said. Fun fact: if you fall down you actually die, even though it's not a bottomless pit but the rest of the level below. How nice...

I'm not even sure if anyone actually watch the whole credits part, but I'm happy to know people enjoyed my dancing at the end haha XD
cool video!
Amazing video, also I have a question if I may. Recently been trying to speedrun this game again after a long hiatus but I seem to just not make the jump-of-penguin shortcut at the start of snow level, I literally spent 30 minutes straight trying to jump+ neutral attack + down button from this guy and haven't succeeded even once. Am I forgetting something? Do I need to wield the hammer weapon, right?
Thanks. The shortcut for the snow level is extremely difficult and precise to attempt. In my speedruns I didn't use the trick because I do not have the time to practice perfecting the controls for the trick. Here's my video recorded from long time ago on the successful jump which I only managed to get once. I think you can try to slowdown the video to figure out the precise moment the keys needed to be pressed at the bottom left corner of the video, but basically I think after initially jumping upwards from the penguin, you need to let go the up key after few frames and press left, attack and down button simultaneously, because the teleport hitbox is slightly further to the left, so you need to hit the hammer while going towards left to reach the teleport hitbox. There could be other ways of doing the jump, but this is the only attempt that I can succeed so far: ruclips.net/video/ZuE0YHjY7mo/видео.html For speedrun resources I recommend checking out Prehistorik 2 on speedrun.com. The site also has a discussion and video attempt made by artwasamistake on the shortcut jump: www.speedrun.com/pre2/thread/0z6cb
Hm. How many points it requires to grab an extra life? I noticed that one 100.000 fridge is not enough alone, but two are.
Every 250000 gives an extra life. Actually it needs at least 3 fridges to get a life if the score is zero, but in this case since there are some points gained before getting fridges so it only needs another 2 fridges to cross the threshold. Interestingly there is official Pre2 manual that gives a lot of trivia for this game, from 250000 per life to hang-glider diving bonus. Here's the text version: pcoldgames.tripod.com/images/prehistorik2_manual.txt There is also a more complete version in scanned pdf with pictures and more details on retrogames.cz, but sadly RUclips comment breaks the hyperlink because it thinks the double hyphen in the link is strikethrough, google "prehistorik 2 manual pdf retrogames" and you should be able to find it in the first result.
@@VidGamGoodGame Thanks :) BTW, grabbing the double-headed axe on level 4 is absolutely useless and worthless. You HAVE to lose it on level 5 if you wanna grab all the goodies, and pick up the light axe instead.
Yeah, the axe in Level 5 is placed there on purpose to force people to collect it while getting big foods. That being said, the hitbox of axe is marginally small enough that it is actually possible to avoid the axe while collecting the food, but its very precise and does not leave a lot of room for error, and its also risky and can easily fall into death if the movement is not prefect, so I always just grab the axe in normal playthrough without trying to avoid it. Video on avoiding axe while collecting food in level 5: ruclips.net/video/TNQbsTgehxg/видео.html
The spoon-fork-knife "foods" won't count your grand total, at least I don't see them at the endlevel bonus. Also I'm not sure about the YEAH-bomb's bonus items...do they count? Because in most cases you can't collect them all.
The dining set foods are transformed from enemies, so it doesn't really count as food collection, more like temporary invincibility for the player to defeat them by "collecting" enemies. Bomb's food acts the same way as the foods coming out from hidden spot, but they are considered extra bonus to award players extra points and if bring to end of level without dying the bomb's food will also fall into pot and counting the score again - but in terms of percentage the game officially do not count them in at the end of level. You can check out my 100% speedrun of this game or the world record 100% speedrun by speedylff on RUclips regarding what counts to 100% by the game's definition - though level 4 100% definition seems buggy even on non-cracked version because it only considers food in pig section for 100% and ignoring main level. The main level if finished all percentages without pig section will be 50%. Hence by decision the main level percentages are also considered for 100% speedrun, so the speedruns are more relying on official definition of percentages. There are more details for the 100% definition in my speedrun video description. This video is more for entertainment purpose by trying to collect most possible stuffs without dying once which then the foods will fall into pot at end of level increasing the score further which is really difficult for real life runs. Also in my opinion the reason food drops from enemies and hidden spot are not counted into 100% is very likely to avoid frustrating players if the food drop goes out of bounds or disappear and become unobtainable, or it could also be technical limitations in programming 100%.
I usually grab the 1Ups first in the corners. This way if I DO die wit' the glider, I won't lose to food bonus at the end.
that challenge completed is beyond unbelievable
over 7 million score whaaaat
8.2 mill bro dyum
Score is kinda pointless in this game, because enemies spawn all time at certain place, someone can just squeeze attack button, and return after several hours and have higher score with very little effort. The way to fix it would be to remove points gain for respawnable enemies
Hm. How many extra lives does that mean altogether? I think 200.000 points gives you an extra life, but I could never keep track of this...
1:40 and 4:30 badass .......
I accidentally found out that almost every level of this game has a secret order of eating which will earn you more points and may give you different bonuses. Check 7M score run by Retro Gaming - he got more points than you usually get. Ready for a new challange? 7.5 or even 8M score in one run :)
I've seen that video also, but I feel like there is too much rng to study and find a specific way to gain maximum bonuses - which means requiring brute force to collect food in order. Though from what I observe playing this game, it surely does nearly always providing same set of food if eaten in certain order. So, it might be true in theory that the rng is same for the food at least if same action is performed every time the game is resetted. But currently we don't have a lot of resource to scientifically study the rng so it will involve a lot of trial and error and very frustrating. Besides, there are also many alternative ways to gain more score and even overflow the score within single run such as beating the snakes in hallway in Level 9 which endlessly spawns after collecting every food without dying, which though time consuming is still way faster than trying to find out order of food. :P
@@VidGamGoodGame Do you know any food order pattern just for an example? I can't think of any. How does this actually work?
I've only learned of one example from level 1, where there are 2 different sets of food provided each time the game is resetted and started from level 1. I don't remember all the details, but for the normal set (since it happens regularly I assume it is the normal set) an example is in the cave in level 1, a pacman-like food will come out of the hidden secret. But very rarely on different runs, a special set of food will be provided in Level 1, which changes the order of food, for example in the cave the pacman-like food is replaced by cake in the hidden secret containing 3 items. I just remembered another example in Level 1, in normal set the first item come out of the hidden secret at the higher platform above the bridge at the very beginning of section just before the cave it is a cheese-like food, whereas for special set the first food is not cheese. Unfortunately even with this example, I believe I did the same action in order, which even I cannot find a way to explain why and how the set of food is determined for first level. Maybe the action is very precise, maybe there is specific rng for first level? I have no idea also actually. Everything that I mentioned here is what I observed and mere sepculation, and I might also be providing wrong info as well. I think, for now, the food rng is impossible to be determined by using normal gameplay unless we can find a way to decipher the code and brute forcing the ideal path. EDIT: Ok, I've checked back the videos, and in No Death Guide video the first item is not cheese while other videos do have cheese, but the cave is still providing pacman-like food, so I think either my memory is fuzzy or the food order has random rng for those that are hidden in secrets. That means the normal-specific set theory might be no longer correct, so the food rng still remains a mystery. But since I've seen the same sets of food as far as I observed, I can only speculate the rng with a few specific food pattern is assigned to each hidden secret that needs hitting to spawn the food. I might also be wrong, so I think its best not to worry too much about it until there is a tool to decipher the coding of food rng.
@@VidGamGoodGame As far as I understood, Retro Gaming says below his video something like there are different routes that give different food or even if you have like one death, it will change something. But he never explained in details.
I think it is most likely pseudo-rng which is commonly used in most games to simulate randomness. It changes food spawning based on the hero's movement, but in theory if the game is resetted and the movement is replayed perfectly, the food generated will be the same as previous playthrough for this game, but in real life it is impossible to replicate previous movement perfectly so the food becomes different upon replaying, or another set of food is generated for said movement path, like e.g. path A gives ice cream, path B gives burger, and then there are millions of path that give different combinations of food, so maybe this is how it works.
This game is so fun and has so many hidden techniques. I wish someone would release an opensource engine for that game so that it plays smoothly than via DosBox and fans can release their own levels for it like we have for Mario World or at least like custom levels for Titus the Fox.
OpenTitus is a project aiming on rewrite the old PC game classic Titus The Fox into a portable opensource game
@@OCTAGRAM That's nice to hear. I hope that engine will support Prehistorik 2 eventually. Btw, I think Lagaf Les Aventures is a way better than Fox, I hope they'll support it as well. Edit: checked their repository, it's too old and looks abandoned.
@@j.h.6672 Developers are having fun with Prehistorik 3 aka Prehistorik Man on Nintendo consoles. First SNES and latest on 3DS. Considering obtaining 3DS XL. I guess, SNES emulation is more smooth, and there are save states

Turning off the light in the game is some kind of penalty? Why everybody so care to turn it back on in the game?
If you mean the part at Level 3, actually the strategy here in the speedrun is obsoleted in newer WR record run where it is not necessarily needed to suicide to turn back the light on as it actually takes more time to do. Back then, when I use this strategy, it is just a coincidence because the warp is placed in convenient position, it allows me to use suicide in order to reduce the food count at the end of level to save time while turning the light back on to be able to see clearly while collecting food using hangglider with minimal impact on time during 100% speedrun. In short turning light off is a minor penalty which makes it harder to see the surroundings and collect food efficiently during hangglider part, but an expert 100% speedrunner won't be affected by it much, using warp suicide to turn on light and reduce food count is a strategy suitable for beginners.
OMG, that ending with credits...! I did not expect that it is possible to collect everything there. Amazing run! Could you tell me, what Prehistorik 2 version you use? Your version has correct colors and music without artifacts on level 3.
Thanks! The version I used is from this website, but it does not have the intro telling game still works this year: gamesnostalgia.com/game/prehistorik-2 Or you can get collection of Titus games including good version of Pre2 with correct graphics and intro of game working this year, but this version's music seems fuzzier than the standalone version: www.oldgames.sk/en/game/fox-collection/discuss/
@@VidGamGoodGame Thank you so much. I have the GOG release and they seem to rip this game from some Titus Game Pack CD. While it is the original with the correct colors on level 3, it suffers from the bugged music on level3,4,5. As I heard this bug was also present on that Titus Game Pack CD while playing the game from CD. There is actually some vague discussion on a prehistorik2 fan site regarding that issue. I also tried to mount the original game release image but never managed to get it to work. The version you suggested is superior in every way besides some very minor issues like the absence of the very first useless screen with yellow letters, and the presence of some artifacts before entering cheat codes. (I investigated - this visual artifact before entering a cheat code is actually a slight misconfiguration of the dosbox.conf file; I would also add "exit" at the end of the dosbox_single.conf file to avoid the black screen during exiting the game). BTW, the FOX Collection refuses to run on my PC - I can only see a Fox spinning logo. P.S. RUclips tends to delete links, I was lucky enough to copy them down :)
Hmm for the FOX Collection I think you have to press any key after the spinning logo to proceed, but I'm also not too sure. Sometimes it also stuck at there so the software might also be buggy sometimes. But it also has the same music issue like you describe in level 3, 4, 5 and also level 9 music having echo instead of silence after music finish playing and before looping, so they're probably the same version as GOG as well. But yeah, its not easy to find the perfect version of Pre2 without bugs, and the original version with correct level 3 colours is also lost for a long time before it is finally restored with these CD packs...
@@VidGamGoodGame Btw, I am also wondering why did they make the forest red in the Dos version? Is it some sort of a glitch that was left in the game? I can nowhere find this info. If you check the level preview before each level start, the forest is green in the panorama. Amstad CPC+ version of the game also has the green forest, but the forest turnes red just for a moment when you kill the tree boss there. Just curious.
Hmm I can only speculate, but I think the DOS version is supposingly the superior standard version of Pre2 in which other versions such as Amstard CPC+ version are considered as ports because the PC/DOS has more powerful graphic processor. The red forest theme is supposingly based on the autumn theme - this game has a theme of four seasons where spring is level 1-2, summer 3-4, autumn 5-6, winter 7-8 and then finally castle 9-10 unrelated to season theme. Also, if you look closely at the graphics each level has a different colour theme, even within the same season. You can easily see the difference by comparing the colour of status bar/level completed cooker between each levels. For example, level 7 cooker is purple-light green and level 8 cooker is blue-light green. This is also probably why the corrupted level 3 graphics in cracked version causes a majority of the sprites to be pink - the specific summer colour theme for level 3 is supposingly light brown that reflects human/animal skin or tree branches and also pale blue colour that reflects the hot summer theme, but the cracked version may have messed up the coding causing light brown to shift to pink in level 3. The level preview is the standard sprite colour without any themes applied to them - I believe they are the same as the spritesheet provided by pre2.mine.nu if not mistaken, and upon entering a level certain sprite colours change accordingly to the theme.
