Tamiya Grasshopper Upgrades including Oil Shocks
Great video. Are those bars home made or a mod kit from somewhere? I can't even find 5mm square aluminium bar! Appreciate any links
You can get it on eBay. There is a guy who is making and selling them on Facebook. If you check out my Lunchbox video 19 Hop Ups I included his details there. Hope that helps.
Got an original better bearings in, different motor controller, better motor. 7 cell batteries i think, oil shocks. Haven't touched it in years, it used to rip it up.
Sounds like a good idea to get it out again and have some fun 👍🏻
Best thing about the Wild One is it's looks. Really just like a full size dune buggy at the time! But, heh, I bought one as my first ever RC "buggy" before I visited the nearby RC Off Road Racing Club. Needless to say I broke my Wild One pretty quickly, and moved on to Kyosho Optimas etc. And I carried on racing for the next8 to 9 years. But you never forget your first RC car.
Did you pick up any of the Legendary series?
@@DustyFingersRC Sorry I don't know what that means, though I can kind of guess. Thing is, I got fully into racing at the end of the '80s. So I was buying buggies that could keep up with the other guys at the clubs, and Tamiya were never kept up there with cars like the Shumacher Cat or Kyosho Optima Mid, or Associated or Yokomo and a few others like X-Ray (seriously expensive). Heh, bought stuff raced and broke 'em. But No, not any Tamiya at that time. I did quit for a few years (wife etc). Had another go in the 2Ks, paused again and am now into Rc crawlers etc. I have approx 37 Rc cars in all right now, including an original Associated RC10. Oh and I do have a Sand Scorcher waiting in it's box for the last 2 years, and a Unimog. Hopefully they'll keep me occupied when I retire in about 4 years! Great fun!
@wordreet They re released the Optimas etc and called it the legendary series. Slightly modernised too for modern day electronics. I enjoyed reading your background in the hobby. I have never done racing other than in a home made track with some kids from school and that was Hornets, Hoppers etc. I have the Turbo Optima and Turbo Scorpion re releases. They are my first venture outside of Tamiya's. Great buggies. I live somewhere very flat with no rocks so crawling isn't much fun but I have found the mini crawlers to be fun. Trying to get my hands on some rocks to make a course. Well, I have made one course but it is small but still fun. I like the build so might do a ground up build next with so many after market parts it is cheaper that getting a SCX24 and upgrading it.
Great video, nice and smoooth driving, I like the C24! 👍
It's a good looking truck 👍🏻
@@DustyFingersRC Yes it is, liked and subscribed 👍
@KPtain_RC Appreciated. I am trying to get a build finished off currently so hope you like it. 👍🏻
@@DustyFingersRC I'm looking forward to, my friend! 😊
Nice video! Another great upgrade if you can find it is .the oring set for the shocks. It turns the stock shocks into oil dampers. Made a huge difference
Thank for watching 👊🏻These are oil shocks on this kit, I ended up putting some thicker oil in the rear which seemed to help a bit. 👍🏻
Sorry i got this confused with the older model of the sandmaster. Yes this one has oil shocks. @DustyFingersRC
RC RUN SO COOL 🤩
In your CVAs, what oil viscosity are you running? I’ve got 85 mm Fastrax on all four corners, but they’re still pretty stiff (and a bit of stiction even after a complete rebuild). I’m on the cusp of switching over to CVAs if I can’t tune these Fastrax soon. Cheers!
You can buy the optional spring set for the Fastrax shocks in case you didn't know. I use them on my son's LB and I am really happy with those shocks. I put the CVA's on this as I had a spare set. I can't be 100% sure but I think I used my go to 400cst from Core-RC. You have piston options with the CVA's which is a bonus but from memory I can't remember what I used unless it is in the build video but I suspect it was 2 hole front and 3 hole rear.
@@DustyFingersRC Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately, being in the States I don't have easy access to the optional Fastrax springs. Ebay hasn't been fruitful and Fastrax doesn't ship across the pond. I may just go with the CVAs as I already have them on hand and parts are readily available for upkeep and adjustment. It's a shame as I like the aluminum build of the Fastrax.
I am always frustrated that I can't get many parts only available in the states so didn't expect to hear these are hard for you to get hold of. Good luck with finding the sweet spot 👍🏻
Body looks Sandscorcher based but this is lexan right? What body is this?
Yeah, lexan body from Kamtech 👍🏻
I cracked at least 5 chassis on that orig front servo mount back in the day😢
This mod makes it tougher but I guess anything can be broken. Bet you had fun doing it though?
Hi ive done pretty much all the upgrades you've done, i uave the exact same shock set up, what height do you set your shocks to when screwing up and down as your lunchbox seems to handle great.
If you are on Facebook I am easy to find and I can send a pic of where the shocks are set. Great to hear you are happy with performance since upgrading. Did you get the optional springs?
Sorry I'm not on Facebook only Instagram, I did get the optional springs and did exactly the same set up as yourself
@Lets_go_RC_UK I am on Instagram too 👍🏻
Wow awesome video my friend,, and cool rc car 👍👍💯
Thanks 🙏🏻
Great! I'm considering painting mine light blue as yours, which color code did you use? thanks :-)
It was so long ago now I can't remember. I think it was a paint by Hycote but can't remember the exact blue. Sorry.
I found the can I used!! It was,Hycote Double Acrylic Rover Pegeant Blue 👍🏻
@@DustyFingersRC Hi OK thank you! I took a Tamiya blue color quite similar to yours (I hope) ;-)
Great tips, love the video, l am going to do exactly as you suggested, love the battery box fix, brilliantly simple.....
Thanks, I appreciate your comment. Yeah, the battery door and the space saving servo is a real benefit.
Ha ha love it!
😀 How's the hobby shed?
@@DustyFingersRC a mess at the moment been doing a camper build vw t4 plus have our first family puppy last week hit the big 50 time has flown by
All sounds positive. Good times ahead and putting work in, staying busy and productive is a win. Must get some footage of your RC's one of these days. 👍🏻
Great to see another video on the kyosho sandmaster 2.0 Damien, it’s a cheap buggy relatively speaking by kyosho especially , if you compare it to their legendary series and competition buggy’s , the spur gear is pretty shocking though. I think we forget sometimes that kyosho released stuff that was just as bad/ inferior as some of Tamiya’s offerings at times , kyosho raider (I love raider) or the Pegasus/Cosmo for example cool but not very good buggy’s. Anyway great content as ever :)
Thanks Andy, wish I could afford more of the legendary series but I have too many other priorities. I hope you and your family are doing well. Your hard work is incredible!
Another very nicely put together video, Damian! This is top info for anyone with, or thinking of buying, one of these buggies! :D
Thanks Mark. Appreciate you always. 🙏🏻
Nice bit of air there buddy !
Yes i build one to and goes fast good to handle made a very nice video driving it 😊
Have you shimmed the gearbox?
รถสวยอยากเล่นมาก สุดยอด 👍👍👍
Thank you always 🙏🏻
Spot on with the weak points on the Sand Master 2.0. 👍 Sorting out the awful pinion/spur setup was the first thing I did. I also packed the gearbox with grease and it made the whole thing a lot quieter. The " bead lock" wheels look good but I've had the tire come off twice now. The tire decals looked good too, for about 10 minutes. 🤣 The only other issue is the battery door, mine keeps getting jammed with grit. Other than those minor issues, it's a real good buggy for the money. 👍
It wasn't 'till I published the video that I found replacement wheels actually come glued so it seems that they know it is a must. Whilst you are here, great to see you have continued racing and been doing well 👍🏻
@@DustyFingersRC Thanks!
What is the opinion in spur teeth?
?
@@DustyFingersRC What is the size of the spur? And what is the size of the pinion?
91T Spur and for the pinion you have options .@@bradkalman2353
Cool video buddy! Nice run spot matey!
It is pretty much the main place I go to and it is a massive woods. Monster trucks love it in the woods, buggies need less sticks on the floor.
Great video Damian. I cannot believe they lable such a bad gear Kyosho. I fear this is the next company loosing it's customers for bad and cheap quality and claiming high prices for a former well sounding name.
I can't comment on anything else they have released for entry level tbh but the spur gear was pretty bad. 👍🏻
Cool video buddy, I think these buggy’s look good, and far better with the upgrades!
I think so too ;) The kids love driving it which is a good sign.
I got 2 of these but no radio gear cos no rc shop (thanks eastbourne)
Can you get radio gear online?
That’s a cool Lunchbox and it’s well set up too. Love the de-chrome look and bonnet protector 👌
Thanks, I appreciate it. Dead easy to do with some foam oven cleaner 👍🏻
@@DustyFingersRC Cheers for the tip I’m gonna try that 👍
I detailed it in another video but all you do is key the chrome with some sand paper (speeds up the process), place in a bag. Spray the foam oven cleaner in and leave for half an hour or maybe a bit more. Can leave it overnight if you prefer, sometimes it works quickly and sometimes you need more time.
@@DustyFingersRC Thanks so much for the info. I found your hop-up video and found it really inspiring. It’s given me some great ideas for my son’s new Lunchbox. It’s lovely to see so much love for it after all these years. Keep up the good work with the videos! 👍
@chrisgocher575 Thank you for watching and engaging. I hope you and your son have loads of fun with the Lunchie 👍🏻
great tip with the O ring
Appreciate you, thanks 👍🏻
Gmade make a really nice shock, I plan on fitting mine with some Tamiya Big Bore shocks
That's a great choice 👍🏻 Hope you enjoy the build 😀
Great video! Cool to see my LB in another YT video 👍. Good information!
It's a looker 👊🏻
Awesome, love the camera work
I appreciate it, thanks 👍🏻
what do you mean should they pop out😄 Great idea, I will have to try that
Thanks for the comment, love it 👍🏻
Siiiiick!

Bravo !
Quick test run, suspension has been sorted now. Thanks for commenting 👍🏻
The US Air Force decided to send me to Germany in 1986. I had somehow come across a Tower Hobbies catalog a few months before I left. I decided to take on a new hobby to keep me busy during my tour of duty, so I ordered a Turbo Optima and radio. Halfway through my tour (of 3 years) I found out US radios used an illegal frequency in Europe. I put my Optima away until I transferred back to the States. Fast forward to 2024 (I'm 62 years old now). I just ordered a Turbo Optima, a Kyosho 240S brushless motor and 240S ESC. Can't wait to put it all together and relive a bit of my youth. Peace out.
Thanks for sharing your amazing back story. I really enjoyed reading that and hope you have loads of fun building and driving this buggy. 👍🏻
the green is outstanding. Original owner of a 1987 Turbo Optima, here. This motivates me to purchase a shell and decals and create a new look for it with my son, who will take it over.
Now that sounds like a good plan 👍🏻 Thanks for leaving such a great comment 😀
You did not
😆
Thank you for not adding music while you were talking hopefully you did the same with the run video
Hi, I understand regards music. YT has been a big learning curve and I have tried different methods but I know what you mean about being able to watch something without music. I personally don't like heavy rock music which many RC channels blast but we are all different. Sorry to say, my running videos don't often have a voice over and do have some music and I try to edit to the music but see what you think. I suppose you can always drop the volume if needed. Thanks for watching.👍🏻
Un KYOSHO MAD VAN serait il pas mieux que tous cette argent et temps passer pour améliorer ce modèle considéré comme un jouet.
The Mad Van has its issues, in fact many people have the Mad Van just sat there broken. A friend of mine has been working on using other parts to fix the front wishbones. I get your point though as I had hoped it would be great and it has a cool vintage look but people buy the Lunchbox based on nostalgia and enjoy its driving characteristic.
A Very entertaining video, as it makes me want to start a new hobby... Keep up the good work!
this is an excellent video and the mfdoom body is fantastic. I have, I mean my son has a 2005 lunchbox and im going to do a stack of these mods for me i mean him to tune it up
Love it, and thanks for the feedback cause it takes a long time doing a video like this one. Glad you and your son are having fun, hopefully if the rain stops this morning I will be out with my boy for some RC action 👍🏻
I bought my first LB in 1988 when I was a kid. I ordered my second LB just now! Your upgrade videos have been super informative and provided me a nice template for mods. So, thanks for that! I do have a question though. What 2S LiPo battery are you using? I'm considering units around 4000-5000 mAh and 35C-50C discharge. My concern is if I'll damage my ESC (HW 1080 G2 and 1060) and/or motor if the discharge (current) is too great.
I haven't moved over to Lipo yet. The comparison between 2S and NiMH is very little imo. I feel safer with NiMH and easier to store. I get loads of run time with 4500Mah batteries, easily enough for a long session. I also only run brushed motors so I am stuck in the good old days lol
@@DustyFingersRC I went with Tamiya's Sport Tuned motor for this iteration. I figured I'd bypass the NiMH batteries for the newest tech...no more resistor speed controllers and soldering individual cells for battery packs :)
If you are on Facebook there are a couple of great Lunchbox pages and everyone seems cool in the group. Loads of suggestions and ideas for lipo batteries in case that helps.
@@DustyFingersRC already joined per your recommendation :)
@jxmcfarland Great, I know you will have a blast with the Lunchy. Appreciate the comments to, nice to share a fun hobby with good people 👍🏻
Really good video 👏 I like the idea of the pen for the detailing. Question, is this an empty Montana can pen filled with some paint? What colour did you use ? Was it Tamiya paint ? Many thanks
Hi, yes. You buy it empty and then get the colour of paint you want to fill it. You can buy paint pens in colours you want too. There is a brand I bought a red pen of but forgot the name. I can check when I get home and message you back.
@@DustyFingersRC legend. I’ve got some really good tips from this video. I’m about to start my lunch box build and they will come in very handy 👏👏
Gana Market Paint Pen. I bought a red one which seems good. I think there are many available now and this particular one only has a round tip so may not be ideal for detailing. I like the chisel tip ones myself. Montana paint is used for graffiti so pretty good stuff which is why I went that route.
' i have one R/C tamiya frog car and use traxxas parts / rims wheels / shocks... another R/C tamtrax car is a half tamiya frog chassic and half traxxas stampede chassic... very cooool
😎👍🏻
This is excellent. And the paint scheme looks awesome too. Great hop up modifications too. I agree both the Hornet and Grasshopper steering arms are really flimsy almost a thin piece of wire and they are also difficult to fit a battery into. So your space saver servi is a great idea filing the suspension arms to get rid of the binding problem is a very clever fix too. Great work here mate Top marks👌👍
Thanks for leaving such a great comment. Glad you liked the video and it has made me want to take it out again 👍🏻
Thanks bro
IMO the least frustrating path to converting Tamiyas to brushless power is a 3000kv F540 - aka 2838-size motor in a 540-size can. The motors tend to be about $15 and any cheap 35a ESC will be fine, and you don't need to buy anything else for a drop-in replacement that gives you a big power boost and better battery life. Lunch Box/Grasshopper type gearboxes can handle the increased power without any problem but as you know, the higher speeds means more broken parts when you crash.
Thanks for leaving this comment 👍🏻
Another great video! Thanks :)
Appreciate it, thanks 👍🏻
IS THERE AN AFTERMARKET DIFF. FOR THE LUNCHBOX (MIP?) LIKE THEY MAKE FOR THE BLACKFOOT?
Not for this no. You can lock the diff but that's all. Few methods to that including a 3D printed option.
Looks great👍🏼 I’m keen to get one now !”
Thanks 😁 Got to say it is really good to drive and great fun.
