I a homeowner (with a kinda messy garage) on a DIY journey keeping up our cars and the house. I thought people might find it useful to learn the lessons I've learned (good and bad!). I've acquired a fair number of tools over the last few years, so I'll be starting with a lot of those :), but please feel free to suggest topics that interest you!

Icon Drop Point Knife The Meme Knife PN 70613
Should I buy a split beam or digital torque wrench? Which is more accurate and which has the least amount of maintenance, error and calibration issues? I want to be able to use this a few times a year and have it be dead accurate every single time. Im willing to pay more for better accuracy and reliability. What is the best torque wrench?
I'm a Snap-On salesman and Jesus, snap-on has got to have a challenger. Mac and matco just ain't got it. I'm hoping icon can grow enough to drive snap-on prices down. For instance, I'd sell alot more if a wrench didn't cost 75 frickin dollars
Why did you make this video titled "why not"? Im watching this thinking you're going to say something negative about it. Now I'm pissed because you just wasted my time with your long winded personal experience
The video is supposed to be about why I'm not on the hype train and buying one. The point is a lot of people wind up buying something because it's "NEW!" or "IMPROVED!" and not because they need it. The personal experience in the video was my journey down that exact road: everybody made so much about the big gun (2767 High Torque) and how it was the answer for almost everything. So I bought it. Ultimately the Mid Torque is better in every way for what I do. I didn't *need* the extra power of the High Torque, and I'm incredibly glad I don't have to deal with the weight of that tool. So this time around I thought sharing that most of DIY'er-world can live happily without the 2967 High Torque might help some save a few bucks and probably have a better tool (a Mid-torque that does all the jobs and is a smaller, more versatile and lighter package). Sorry the video didn't work for you. :(
You keep saying you got rid of the 2767, but you don't say what that one is?
It's pretty well-known as the Gen 2 Milwaukee FUEL High Torque, though I should have made that more explicitly clear.
Great video are you getting the 3/8 or 1/2” ?
I'm getting the 1/2". The early evals I've seen say the 3/8" has slightly more grump, but I want access to big sockets for things like hub huts, etc. without using an adapter.
@@themessygarage sounds good 👍
I agree. These aren't really competitor tools. I just ordered a set of the Snap-On 196ANCF which is the version of these that actually have a cutter on them. I've had the Twin Grips and am interested in getting another pair, but their real competitor from Snap-On is the HJ47ACF FlankJaw Talon Grip pliers. I just ordered those also and will compare them with my Knipex Cobras for now, but probably the best alternative to the Twin Grips is the Engineer (Vamplier if you like wasting money. They are the exact same model except for the color) PZ-59. At that point, you are choosing between a cutter and a Cobra-style grip. I think Snap-on actually offers slightly more with that HJ47ACF model with the cutter, FlankJaw, and Talon Grip plier head, but I wouldn't argue it's best for the money. It really depends on the line of work you do, but now that I've started HVAC, I think the Snap-On 196ANCF and the Knipex Raptor are probably the best combo pliers you can get for that job, and hopefully by next Friday, I can verify that. With the Klein auto-stripper and Klein 11-in-1 HVAC screwdriver, I think 80% of the hand tool job will be covered. I don't even think I'll need a pliers wrench unless the Raptors prove they can't handle nitrogen valves or gas valves.
I'm upgrading but keeping my Gen 1 3/8. The main reason is that the 10-pound Auto Stop makes doing valve cover jobs quick. The Gen 2 stops at 15 pounds, which is too much for that application, but it's beast mode for everything else. I almost bought the DCF921 1/2 a few days before the Gen 2 was announced, and I'm glad I didn't. BTW, I also have the same 1/2 Midtorque, but honestly, I hardly use it and my High Torque since the stubby is my workhorse. For new techs, I'd say get a Gen 2 3/8 stubby, skip the midtorque, and get the new High Torque. You'll be covered for pretty much everything that rolls in.
Thanks for a really interesting comment! I went 1/2" to give me a single set of impact sockets and to have the range go up to the size for wheel hubs/etc. The Stubby is so short that the additional length of the 1/2" sockets hasn't been a problem.
@@themessygarage I have both sets of impacts, but the 3/8 gets into some tighter spots especially while using wobble sockets. The 1/2 sockets and extentions are just too bulky at times to use in those pesky transverse engine bays. I do use the 3/8 to 1/2 adapter at times which does give the 3/8 more beans. I'm getting both the 3/8 and 1/2 stubby's this time. You just can't beat the versatility of the stubby's torpedo style 🔋 breakdown to get into some crazy places 👍🏻
@@johnny4713ify There are so many low-profile options for impacts that along with the shortness of the Stubby I just can't see two sets. But if you have the room and the tools, it's all good...
@@themessygarage Maybe for a DIYer, a 3/8 or 1/2 inch Stubby would serve them well. As for myself, I find that I need every bit of clearance possible, so having both options is a must. For example, I was working on a 1996 OBS F150 that needed the water pump and fan clutch removed. I used several fan clutch wrenches to remove the fastener, but no dice. It was so seized that I was literally stripping the fastener. I ended up cutting off the fan clutch and just leaving behind the fastener for easier access to remove. I tried using my 3/8 stubby, but the additional adapter length, while using the larger socket, prevented me from zipping it off. If I had the 1/2 version, I would have had just enough clearance to at least bust it loose. Whoever replaced it in the past used a crazy amount of Loctite, so a long breaker bar and a bit of heat popped it loose. And yes, I do own low-profile Astros and Capri sockets in both 3/8 and 1/2, but in that application, it wouldn't matter because they don't make them that large unless custom-ordered. For me, the 3/8 version has served me well, but having a 1/2 in the mix is well worth the investment.
New subscriber, just bought my first Koken ratchet & sockets.
You'll like 'em - they make great stuff!
I sold mine to a lube tech, in fact I used the money and pre order the new one and I can’t wait
I just bought my second one today. I had a coupon too. Great knife for the money. I still would like to see some knurling on the flipper tab. Cheers!
Can't do Harbor freight 90 warranties.
Then add the longer warranty. Their logic is that if something is wrong from the factory it will show up quickly, and they can save money by only covering that by default. If you want longer, their warranty isn't crazy money.
The regular kokens are identical to the tone, and the tone is cheaper. They look to be the same socket with a different name, honestly.
Do you know where I could find some carbon brushes and what size ?
I don't - mine came with some extras, so I'd guess they're in HF's parts catalog. Go to the bottom of their website and you'll see a parts list PDF to download and a number to call (1-800-444-335). A quick search shows part number 602590 as a carbon brush set, but I'd confirm when you call.
I’ve had mine for over a month. It’s a great knife. Well worth the money. Knife snobs will find fault with everything. Shame on them. I highly recommend this knife. Cheers!
how tall are these compared to the escos shorties?
your comparing apples with oranges.
You're not wrong. That's kinda the point of the video.
I have the Z-series in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 - Top quality sockets to work in tight spaces. I wish the markings on them were bigger/wider - Stay Safe
Raise the volume
These are $45 on Amazon right now👍
I would not try and remove a bolt with LN47's , that's better for electrical, copper, literally ANYTHING but, Knipex is an extractor tool and not great for much else. Totally different tools
What Mazda can’t that go under? It looks pretty low. Interesting the green is lighter than the all aluminum one
Believe it or not just a regular Mazda3. I'm talking about getting to the center spot so I can get both wheels in the air at the same time. I do have aftermarket shocks in the car, so maybe it sits a little more on the springs and is a bit lower? In any case, I'm very happy to have it. The funniest part is how much less noisy and rattly it is than any of my jacks.
How do you turn up the volume or it doesn’t have a speaker
I legit haven't even thought about it. I'm packing to move, so won't be able to check for a while, but my guess would be it's in the settings gear that's on pretty much every screen (if there is a speaker).
What light is that on the hutch door?
If you mean the overhead light, it's the Icon light bar. I made a video about my install of it: ruclips.net/video/qd82p5Yp4BY/видео.html
2 totally different tools
Well... yeah... ;)
I have one… Totally enjoy it. People will always complain about something.
$479 on sale
What is the difference between mk900 and maxsys 906bt
I have to admit: There's currently a pile in the hutch... :( (but I have sorta-good excuses)
If anyone wants this set, there's currently an amazon seller with them listed for $46. Where everyone else is around $80. I ordered today
That's an awesome deal on these!
Got these from amazon for $64. These are top notch extensions, well made
Howdy. Do you think its possible for two, people to leverage the pallet from the bed of a Honda ridgeline? (Same 56" series 3 box) Thanks!
It would be...sketchy. The thing is legit heavy and tall enough that I'd worry about tipping. The way it's packaged wouldn't love steep angles, either. I've seen some folks do some things on RUclips, but a truck with a ramp is really the way to go, or a really low trailer. And still have a buddy to help... ;) My $0.02. Good luck!
These koken sockets look to be the real deal. You've made me want to try them out! Looking forward to your next video.
I've really enjoyed using them!
Yes the self tapers were a poor choice. I assembled this inside the drawer to minimize scratches. Still somehow got a scratch but not losing sleep. This thing feels kinda cheap. After i got installed no regrets on the purchase. These are starting to come back in stock in my area.. just a heads up to those waiting
Assembling in the drawer is a great idea...
Having the lock on trigger is a must for me on a rat tail grinder. It enables you to either be able to choke up on the grinder for occasional finer control, or one handed operation. Also a must for longer grinding/cutting jobs, otherwise you get additional hand fatigue having to constantly keep the trigger depressed.
What socket holders are those? Thanks
They're made by Ares - nice stuff!
Middle bar, thank you
My upper handle cam is making contact with the moving jaw surface.
Suspension work ? . Wow ... must be good . I heard that was made in Taiwan . I need those . /.
Upper control arms on some cars (like my Mini) can be really tightly-tucked in the body, so they've come in VERY handy for that. Similar story for motor mounts, where you're often stuck reaching and need some angle too. Not everyday use, but life-saving when you need them. My $0.02.
@@themessygarage Thanks ! ✌️
How do you like it? im thinking about getting it because the warranty!
I'll find out this weekend when I do the brakes on the family Honda! ;) But honestly there's nearly-zero risk of it being a bad kit. I'd want the biggest coupon possible due to it's cost, but everything looks very-nicely made. FWIW, I've never broken a tool doing brakes - there's nothing going on there that should break anything in this kit.
Just get one and see, if they have it in stock that is???
Didn’t think I’d need a tutorial on how to install this. But after scratching up the front and back of the drawer due to the 2 screw at the top, I finally got it in thanks to you.
I'm glad it was useful. I'm not happy it has to be - lol. Now that I'm fully using the box, I'm thrilled with the power drawer.
Ucan get this wrench set on offer up for 100$ I'm recommend the Craftsman made in China double box end wrenches the resale is 300 and the made in USA are going for 500 online and I think they are going to get higher
I haven't seen the Craftsman, but I'm guessing they aren't reversible at the head, which would make them a non-starter for me...
For reference this is the same exact knife they sell on BLADEHQ for about 70-80 bucks.....same...exact knife.....same factory is listed and everything. Half price, same knife, no brainer
Can you post the name and model? I spent a few minutes scanning the site, and I don't see the identical knife.
Just skip to 3:35 if you don’t want to listen to all the yapping. Came for a tool unboxing, not a story about your reasoning for your tool selection.
LoL - fair.
I wish knipex made a slip joint needle nose. The TwinGrips are good but the end is too big for some jobs. I have regular knipex need noses and they're great but they could be taken to the next level with a slip joint! The snapons are really the only snapon tool i've seriously considered purchasing ... but at 3x the price of even Knipex it's a hard sell for a home garage
The HF model is just fine. For those that appreciate a slightly better tool, then go Knipex. HF did a good enough job for me, I'm just a DIY type.
Any chance you compared this to the z series extension?
Now I only wish I could find one. I've been waiting since the first of the year for it to come back in stock. The ship from China must have broke down. Can I get a volunteer to go look for it 😡
I drive 45 min away to get mine. I kinda combined the trip with something else I'd been meaning to do, but now I'm really glad I did. Odd thing to run short of, but guessing most folks who get one of the bigger USG carts gets one.
For sale online now
Hey man, dig the channel. Keep at it. Lou
Thanks!!
Tiered of seeing this knife. Bought one. Go to my store two three days a week, looking for another, caint her one.
