Stained Glass Cuts

Добавлен 15 ноя 2020
What makes this channel unique is the new perspective it provides to Stained Glass. Most people do not think of glass in motion, it's stationary and fixed. What we will explore through tutorial videos is how to make glass become a three dimensional object with motion from taking a flat sheet of glass and transforming it into a thing of motion and beauty.

Kelpieone from Stained Glass Cuts shows you how to fuse a pattern that appears woven but has no overlapping pieces of different colored glass. Because there are no overlapping pieces, this technique allows the use of transparent glass without the risk of undesirable color blending that can occur with traditional glass weaving techniques. Designs made in this new way make great sun catchers. Mor...

Would love to see a video featuring your studio, and your favorite tools for fusing. Love your channel! Learning lots, thank you!
I like your idea of showing my studio. I’ve just moved out most of the finished hanging pieces into a gallery, “Arts Off Center” in Superior, CO. so my studio is not as colorful as usual. It might be interesting to do just for the layout and tools. Thanks!
Great video! Thank you for covering what happens with 2 long straight edges when fused in a single layer-it was the answer I was looking for!
Thanks. The single layer experimentation led me to creating the “Twice Cooked” technique. Cheers!
WASTE NOT WANTNOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, the 1576 expression from Richard Edwardes. I guess I do not fear falling into poverty by the trashing of this glass.😁
THEY CAN ALKWAYS BE CUT UP AND BE REUSED.
I agree with your statement. You can be very creative reusing, but I believe those leftovers can limit your creative
options.
LOVE YOUR IDEAS. BUT HY DO YOU CALL IT STAINED GLASS WHEN IT IS FUSABE GLASS?
Thanks for watching! If you search the internet for the definition of stained glass the results will be similar to this definition : “stained glass, in the arts, the coloured glass used for making decorative windows and other objects through which light passes. Strictly speaking, all coloured glass is “stained,” or coloured by the addition of various metallic oxides while it is in a molten state.” Hope this clarifies. Cheers! KELPIEONE
Hanging on to tests/failures has always been a struggle of my own. Thanks for the reminder that it’s not always necessary and can sometimes be a source of stagnancy.
Bentley- Thanks for watching! May all your ideas flourish.
It could be interesting to sprinkle them onto an opaque bit of white glass and create a terrazzo look
I like that thought! Thanks!

Can you share what the connector on the end of your chain is ?

OK, you're really good at this.
And lucky. :) Thanks for watching Steevie! Cheers!
Love it. Thanks for sharing the process and your thoughts ❤❤
Debbie- Thanks for watching! I enjoy sharing my discoveries Cheers!
Thanks for this video. I managed to cut ordinary plain window glass well without having to grind any one of my 67 pieces, that was until I started cutting textured glass. So I’ve gone from thinking ‘ yes I can do this’!! To ‘0h my hat, I’m so out of my depth here! 😳 so your advice & tips really come in handy!
Debbie- Thanks for watching. I know what you're saying about textured glass. When I'm cutting I'll even look at "flat" glass to see which side is smoother. You can often feel the slight variations with your fingers. Cheers!
Love this tutorial! It so interesting to know ‘why’ stuff happens. You really make it easy to understand! Thanks and cheers as always☺️
Thanks Caroline. Just back from vacation with some new design ideas.
awesome video! i know nothing about stained glass-making, but this video is making me want to try it :-)
Thanks so much! Cheers!
So blessed to have stumbled across this channel. You are so kind for offering all of this information to the world!!! I love the primary colors in your pieces as well. They evoke a childlike whimsy in me ❤️💛💙
Milo - Thanks for watching! Nurture that inner child. Cheers! 😊
Oh, all the ideas!!!!!
Thanks Judy!
I am concerned that you are instructing people to fuse together glasses of unknown compatibility of COE, coefficient of expansion. These incompatible created pieces can break apart suddenly at any time. If you mentioned anything about COE, I missed it.
Karen- Thanks for watching. I usually mention in my videos that I'm using only tested compatible COE 96 glass but I missed it in this video. I have taken to always mention it in the description too, which I did with this video. Good catch.
Thanks!
A piece of chalk would make a lovely hole too. What fuse were you doing for twice cooked? Full, contour? Thanks for the new video I was excited to see it pop up. I love people who are like yourself a combination of scientist, explorer and artist😊
This is a beautiful video, but you have neglected critically important safety information for new people, and wrongly refer to the materials as "stained glass" (not formulated for fusing nor tested to be compatible" rather than "compatible fused glass". An easy fix would be a voice-over or character-generated clarification of this issue. All teaching artists should be responsible for passing off the best information.
@kareykaram4243 You're living up to your name. Ultimately, people are responsible for their own choices, even if they are uninformed choices based on poor information. Stop haranguing this man for a simple mistake that was not included in other videos, and frankly, one that you should already know if you are using glass castoffs to make scrap trinkets. Most of the people watching this video are not trying to learn how to make these things, they are watching creative people do creative things that they will never undertake themselves.
Fun stuff! Did you ever do a video for your fab design/cutting thingy. I’m not sure what you called it. The one that makes wonderful shapes like stars and polyhedrons. .?
Yes I have. There are 2 videos: Part 1 and 2. "Stained Glass Polygon Cutter - How To Make One" Thanks for watching!

@@stainedglasscuts2360 you as well! I have my second firing going right now! I can’t wait to try more advanced projects. I want to make a sun-catcher/ dream-catcher. My husband and children and grand child are Native American. Do be surprised when I call upon you for ideas 😃
Elizabeth- I think this technique could make a great dreamcatcher. Especially if made with rings. I've overlapped 3 rings before. You can see the result on Instagram "StainedGlassCuts". But adding more rings in a weave would be cool. Always happy to help. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
@@stainedglasscuts2360 thanks. I’ll keep that idea brewing…I don’t have any cold working tools yet. I don’t have a circle cutter, I have a kiln. And ideas, I have lots of ideas, lol. Thanks for the help!

Love it, great invention 😊. I can’t figure out why everyone who watches your videos doesn’t give it a like. You are brilliant
Debbie- Thanks! I got tired of cutting pentagons to make dodecahedrons for terrariums by hand. Came up with the cutter. The stars were kind of a bonus. Hope you checked out my videos on how to make the cutter. Cheers!
Thank you, I am off to practice. Clear directions and materials list are greatly appreciated ❤🎉😊

I really enjoy your presentation style and you have a very soothing voice
Nina- Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!
wish I could start experimenting with fusing but with the price of electricity in the UK these days, I'd be bankrupt pretty soon.
Sorry.
Came for the beautiful designs and carefully and thoughtfully documented process - stayed for the bad puns. (:
LOL! You know you loved the pun. Thanks!
Enjoyed your video, I'm now a fused glass person but I also do lapindary work so this is so great! I think you should also include somewhere how circular saws cut more on the bottom side than the top so newbies aren't suprised by this. work so this
Thanks for watching! That is a great point. I was having a problem in my cuts, not knowing exactly when to stop without cutting into the ring. I've come up with a solution to that which I'll be showing in my next video. I take a 3mm diamond burr and make paired holes opposite each other just shy of the the edge of the inside of the ring. I then saw across the center joining the holes. The center pieces just fall out now, and I don't have to worry about accidentally cutting into the ring. This whole process is kind of like blasting a tunnel in a mine, which is actually how I came up with this idea. You need to have somewhere for the tightly packed glass to go. The kerf of the saw provides that space. Cheers! from a Stained Glass Rockhound.
Brilliant!
Sharon - Thanks for watching. The brass stands up well to being outside. Cheers!
Happy New Year from Sarnia, Ontario Canada! Best wishes for a wonderful 2024!
Same to you! I hope you have a great year! Cheers!🎆🍷
There’s another easier way....take a diamond head drill bit. Say 5mm diameter, sometimes used for drilling a hole in a ceramic tile. Drill 4 holes on the inner ring, being careful that the hole doesn’t overlap the scored line. Then score a cross between the holes so you have 4 quarters & carefully break. Good luck!!
Thanks for watching Keith! I like your idea. I've found that on larger circles, with my method, the glass sometimes didn't necessarily release the inner arc. So now, great minds think alike, I've been taking my 3mm diamond bur and drilling holes along the arc, usually 6 or 8 depending upon the size of ring I want. I drill them right next to the arc. Then I saw across joining them. The pieces just drop out. I'm going to try your method, scoring rather than sawing. I won't get as wet, for sure. 😊 Cheers!
Keith - I have a question. I tried your technique. It works and I stayed nice and dry. I did have a bit of trouble getting the glass to release. I ended up hitting the middle repeatedly with the ball on my glass cutter until I was able to shatter out one piece. After that everything came out easily. Was this the proper approach? Thanks!
Buenísimo!!
Gracias por ver! ¡Salud!
Fantastico !!!
Gracias. Eres muy amable.
Maravilloso!
I love all your videos so far. I can’t wait to get in my studio today and cut some donuts. I still only have microwave kilns but it was nice to see you started that way as well. Thanks for taking the time to teach!
Pamela - Thanks for watching. The microwave kilns are a great way to find out if you like glass fusing with very little investment. If you do like it, you'll love moving up to a "real" kiln. So much more room and control. Keep at it! Cheers!
Very, very useful. I LOVE the use of "what ever is handy" as a running tool! 😂
Thanks for watching Bob. My next video is all about "scraps". Cheers!
@@stainedglasscuts2360 Scraps are currently on my "How the heck do I manage these?" list. Do I invest the effort in categorizing and identifying the scraps based on their original purchase (e.g. color code, striker, reactive, etc.) or just have a scrap pile of random COE 90 (or separately, COE 96, since I seem to be incapable of sticking with just one brand)? I look forward to your thoughts and experiences. :)
Outstanding! The small irregular hexagonal holes in the middle are amazing. I genuinely love when shapes like that emerge. The kiln is somehow adjacent to one of my favorite features of generative art where the overall form (in this case fused internal rings) and the small details (emergent irregular hexagons) are decided simultaneously by the process. Big smile!
Thanks!
Commenting before I see the results: 94% chance of success!
LOL! Thanks for the vote of confidence.
"Intriguing".... Indeed..! Me : I gotta try this... Wife : No way you're buying a lapidary saw ! 😢

BRILLIANT
Christina - Thanks for watching! I used to make a lot of dodecahedron terrariums and needed to cut a lot of pentagons.
cool
Mickey - Thanks for watching! Cheers!
I don't understand why you need to remove 13 links, then put them back together. What's the difference?
Patti- Thanks for watching! I remove the links so I can add the O-ring to the top of the chain. When the piece is hung the O-ring orients the glass to say a window or a wall. Hope this helps. Cheers!
I'm sure if I was looking at the links in person it would have been obvious. I appreciate you discussing the need to correctly mount the chain connectors so the mosaic hangs properly. I would have missed that.@@stainedglasscuts2360
Man, I need to find a kiln and give this a try! :D
Kert - Thanks for watching. Cheers!
Nice video! Thanks! I guess you could use a ring saw with a separating blade for the inner circle, but that would take much longer than the lapidary blade.
Richard - Thanks for watching! I had thought about a ring saw. Didn't know you could get one with a separating blade. I would have tried it for sure. I agree, probably would have taken longer.
