Rude and insulting was Ros's questions to Cook. I'm so glad Ross came gropper with Brand over Manuelgate scandal.

It's interesting what ends up being more timeless than other comedy. I often go back to the semi-improvised Pete & Dud sketches, and the other Cook & Moore sketches (not the Derek & Clive because that was more an exercise in being outrageous and isn't that funny), far more than I ever go back to the Monty Python sketches, for example. Python was always clever, but not always funny. The relatively few Cook & Moore sketches remain just as funny as they ever did.

All the better when you realise Clive only had a brief outline of who the character was so he could prompt if needed, and it was all pure improv by Peter. A true genius at work. Impressive when you realise how Ill Peter was. I saw it on transmission, easily the best thing on tv that night by a mile and still hilarious 30 years later.

So many styles of humour fade over the years but Pete & Dud never do. I remember this when it was first broadcast. Clever, intelligent humour. Also, most of the audience would have known the references in this. Nowadays few would. We have become a thick uncultured nation.

“Funny that.” And that’s all it takes for spontaneous laughter - despite the audience having heard it before hundreds of times. Extremely rare and devastating cue.

The genius of these peerless comedians is that they often could barely constrain their mirth knowing what was coming up - having scripted the uproariously witty dialogue themselves. On top of that, is that could ad lib extra in as well
