    May I ask you for an advice? I am practicing vibrato for a few month now. I watched your video and several others to learn it properly. And as long as I practice seperately everything is fine - my violin teacher says, the motion is right. But as soon as I try to integrate it in practicing a piece it seems as my Fingers forget about the motion and my whole left hand gets stiff. Especially in 1st position (third feels better). My teacher (he is russian and we have some understanding Problems because he doesn't speak german very well) thinks it is a problem of left hand and bow hand not working properly together, but why does it feel like my left hand forgets about the motion and falls in some kind of fear stiffness? I would be so thankful for some advice from you. Kind regards from Germany, Sabrina

      Definitely. 👍 I’m playing the Suzuki rep in the way that I like to teach them at this level, which doesn’t include using limited vibrato as an ornamentation. I start talking about that usually starting in the Handel sonatas. 👍

    Hy ,may I please ask ,how long will getting a hang of vibrato be

    • @priceviolinacademy
      @priceviolinacademy 10 дней назад

      Good question without a clear answer. Many techniques can we learned in a week or two with very concerted effort. Vibrato…… is not really one of those. I personally had an unlock moment maybe a year into having a regular vibrato exercise as part of my routine. Just throw a little thoughtful time at it daily and it will unlock gradually. Definitely possible to develop a pleasant vibrato in under a year if you’re focused.

    You will get pulled if you are playing this as Suzuki, and trying to influence Suzuki. SAA does not want people doing this on YT and they will get it kicked.

    • @priceviolinacademy

      I thought so too actually before looking into it. Turns out the SAA does allow the posting of recordings, but not the monetization of them. So any video with songs that they have the rights to I don’t make anything from ad revenue. 👍

    Can you explain why you usually start from half position? I really like your exercises but wonder if it is somehow less good to start from 1st position? Especially when going to 3rd?

    • @priceviolinacademy
      @priceviolinacademy 26 дней назад

      Hey John! Good question. It's one I haven't thought that critically about till now. It's just the way the exercises are written in the Suzuki books. On thinking about it though I do have some thoughts: 1. I don't think of the exercise as starting in half position. Rather I just think of the first note as a low 1 in 1st position. I only really think of being in half position if many of my finger placements are below their usual position. 2. I think the low 1 is chosen perhaps because it makes the shifts easier to hear. I think the priority is arriving at the new position at a note that is scalar in relationship to the note in 1st position. 3. At the end of the day, it probably doesn't matter much where you start from as long as you are ingraining the correct fundamentals of shifting. Feel free to adapt it and start from a neutral 1 and it will work just as well. 👍

    Really like your videos- I learned a lot about the actual motion of the hand. I think I understand the placement of the fingers on the string toward the inside tip (a close-up of your fingers in the video would be helpful). I also really appreciated your comment about violin set-up- it's not a simple thing and it does change a little over time. I'll watch out for that video as well as anything related to identifying/ eliminating tension. Also, I'm curious if you have a link for your shoulder rest- looks pretty hefty, I'd like to check it out. Many thanks.

    • @priceviolinacademy
      @priceviolinacademy 26 дней назад

      Hey Pat! Thanks for the comment! I'm getting antsy to get a violin set-up video out as I've received a few comments about it and I really want to have the information on the channel. It should be one of the next ones I work on. The 'shoulder rest' I use right now is more of a glorified foam pad. I like it compared to others because it doesn't slip around once attached. It's called AcoustaGrip. I also recommend the Mach One as a more traditional shoulder rest option for a lot of my students.👍

    Great video! Hey, what does the thumb do? Does it move or stay still? I can't make my thumb stationary on a fixed point. I can't see you thumb, so I'm assuming it doesn't move. I know you said to make it counter the pressure of the fingers, but it seems physically impossible, lol.

    • @priceviolinacademy
      @priceviolinacademy 26 дней назад

      Hi Simon! The thumb should apply a very slight amount of counter-pressure and should stay pretty much still. If you're finding it difficult to keep the thumb stationary, I'm assuming there is some tension in the way you are supporting the instrument-- potentially gripping the neck with the thumb and base of the index finger. Keep an eye out for my violin setup video, which I'm working on now.

    I try to praise my young musician for all the hard work she puts in. Talented or not, that's not something she had any control over. But she does have the choice to keep practicing till she gets it right, push patiently through frustrating passages, play instead of watching tv, and keep trying even when it's not coming out the way she would like. I agree many talented young people expect it to always come easily, and give up as soon as their gift runs them into their first real challenges. Dedication is a choice.

    You might have mentioned somewhere but is there a reason you do thirds from the lower number of the finger? I have been playing from the lower note which seems to be normal practice and we get told that the lower note gets more emphasis generally. Thanks

    • @priceviolinacademy
      @priceviolinacademy 26 дней назад

      Good question. I've actually gone back and forth on this one. You're right that the lower note should get more emphasis and generally it's also the more difficult one to hear clearly. If you choose to do the lower note first, I think it makes it a little easier to hear and also a little easier to reach back for larger intervals. In general I adopt the rule of thumb to set almost all chords with the lower number finger first. I do this because it is easier to adjust higher number fingers once lower number fingers are down rather than vice versa. Give it a try and I think you'll feel what I'm talking about. This is the order of operations I generally default to in pieces generally and especially in Bach fugues. With thirds specifically I actually think it's useful to practice them both ways, but I tend to start with lower finger first unless the student has very small hands. Hope that helps.

    Very useful exercises indeed - many thanks :-) Judging from what is visible in the video, it looks as if, on the downward shift, that you use the curve at the end of the neck to identify where you position your thumb - would I be right in thinking this?

    • @priceviolinacademy
      @priceviolinacademy 26 дней назад

      Not a bad thought. I would say that I don't actually use it to feel 1st position and I would recommend not doing so. Reason being that I think that the thumb would be too far back if you had it actually get all the way to the curve at he end of the neck. It is close though. Happy practicing!
