you mean the notation software? Finale 2012 in this video… but since a few weeks I use Sibelius ultimate
Awesome content; unrelated but, I like the layout of your sheets; what software did you use ?

@@en-blanc-et-noir Nice, thanks.
When I saw your CHOPÍN waltz variation video, I was looking up which CHOPÍN waltz you were playing towards end of video and I couldn’t find it, but I KNEW I recognized it… then finally I found it and realized it was your own WaltZ variation to Chopins mazurka in C# minor❕ hah…. @@en-blanc-et-noir do the organ and partimento match?
Filtsch was truly amazing. Liszt is quoted having said that "once this kid starts touring, I can close up shop" - and then Filtsch started touring and TB entered the chat... Apparently, in his lessons to Filtsch, Chopin (who actually hated teaching) used to often show his own pieces to the then 13yo Carl, tasking him with "re-composing" it at home - meaning to keep the structure and the harmonic develompent, but create his own themes and motives on it. This is a fantstic exercise in improvisation and composition! I have had the honour of receiving lessons from Rudolf Lutz (one of my role models in my musical life) and he employed this a few times in our sessions - in my case, it was with Brahms' 1st piano sonata. That was... rather challenging 😅

My ending of this new Chopin waltz. Does it fit? ruclips.net/video/-2HrOnN_ADA/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Another fascinating presentation. Thanks. Great insights on a great performance. I remain unconvinced that such pieces can't be written out by hand completely, though.
Thx Timothy! You mean like writing a thing like that, perform it and tag it as "improv"? Lol I doubt it... What I was trying to show is that an improv can as well be based on a battle plan... as well as the improvisatory nature ("abrasive textures")... I'd argue that drawing from a certain template is actually quite a necessity, there is no such thing as "pure" or "uncondictional" improv, at least not in my understanding. Timothy, as a regular hangaround on this channel you know that, dontya? I don't know much about Weimanns background though...
@@en-blanc-et-noir I can't imagine successful improvisations without "battle plans," as you put it. For me such forethought is essential to writing or -- not that I do/did much of it really (call me crazy, but I personally enjoy the adventure of writing stuff down entails) -- improvising .
The pivot chords for modulation at the beginning of the video is Aug 6th, is it?
pivot chords?
@en-blanc-et-noir What is a pivot chord? A: Pivot chords (also known as “common” chords) are used when music modulates from one key to the next. The pivot chord will be a chord that both keys share. For example, let's say we're modulating from C Major to G Major. We can see that these keys share a few of the same chords. I just looked at it up on google. The chord that can be modulated to other tonalities
@@carolintjoa2487 I don't know what example ("modulation at the beginning") you're referring to... when modulating per sequence you don't need pivot chords. IMO this concept is an overstretched hallucination of 19th/20th century music theory, like a misguided route that emerged from the desire to systematize key relations. Especially between closely related keys it is a superfluous conception that is simply dispensable. Actually the only scenario where this concept makes sense is when it's about chords that truly allow multiple interpretations related to several keys, e.g. the diminished 7th chord. Even with the Aug6 chord I'd say that it usually goes one direction: D7 (of the one key) becomes Aug6 (of the other) and just in verrrry rare cases it's the other way around, so I would just teach in the way as it usually occurs...(so this is not a pivot route in both directions!) When I was a student I had to learn and memorize a chart (!) of pivot chords that tried to cover ALL possible relations. Now that I'm a teacher myself with several years of experience under the belt see this concept as a total failure and decided for myself that I don't wanna teach like this anymore. Actually a shame that it is still common sense and probably still a standard subject in many classrooms. #nohate that's not against you, I just had to deliver my rant :DDD
First of all, you are a great teacher, man. I absolutely never ever think that you are against my commentary. I am very happy and grateful to be taught. It's my mistakes here, because I thought pivot chords are the dim7th dom7th aug6th which has a resolution to a key or other key. Besides I just found out that pivot chords are actually the definition of chord degrees where 2 tonalities have in it. I mean the opening which you played Bach like , it's actually dim 7 from G and dim7 from C. I thought it was Aug 6th. It is probably my mistakes which are actually not being careful enough. I would very appreciate if you can do Aug6th modulation explanation for your next content, would very much looking forward to it. Thanks again , I really appreciate it. Wish you all the best !
@@en-blanc-et-noir my god , I just realized you do made a video about Aug 6th , and just checked it out , sorry my bad,😅
Genius
1:42 ;those are some nice suspensions with coloration. interesting progression, I’ve never heard it before, I - V6 - IV6 - iii6?! Is this to be seen as just a falling fauxbourdon?
lol yeah, I'd call this a Fauxbourdon - with 7-6-suspensions applied. And I'd stay away with the Roman numerals from that thang! I mean: what's the point in tagging it with those? How does it illuminate the progression when it''s actually just a parallel shift of 6th chords that descends by step and that is already the entire mechanism behind it (and it actually hasn't any functional logic)... You haven't heard it before? I don't believe you :DDD Thanks for asking!
@@en-blanc-et-noir why give something a label, because it helps us humans to order our thoughts. In retrospect, the first chord in the sequence is actually an a minor 6 chord, so yeah, falling fauxbourdon that doesnt „need“ labeling, other than to analyze something for yourself - and being able to look over your thoughts again.

Great content 👍
I'm impressed that you can play so many different styles. 👏
Thanks man! appreciated!
Wow!!
Is P.T Arnold's book a good choice for realizing these freer works? I've seen, for example, some chains of 6/4/2 or 6/4/3 chords on Vivaldi's slower movements(eg. Autumn, mov.2), but haven't seen explanations on these on partimento guides. Is there any treatises you might recommend, specially on the baroque style, for more info on these resolutions?
yo, never heard of PT Arnold. Those chords are pretty common… the chains however as seen in those Partimenti are not really a baroque type of thing but rather become hip around 1800 - as they are chromatic or so called ‚real‘ sequences (in opposition to diatonic sequences which is the baroque standard type). These sequence though has a baroque ancestor: the 4/2-6-chain, which deffo is explained in every Partimento source that features ‚the rules‘. I spoke about this family of sequences several times on the channel, on the baroque type here: ruclips.net/video/GuDqqHaKaGE/видео.html
Right, the resolutions of these chords are mostly modeled on the ROTO, but when solving more extreme cases, like in Vivaldi or fugal Bach, the preparations and flow of the bass are harder to track. I'll start on Arnold's this December, some said that this book, with Heinichen's, should have plenty of additional resolutions besides the standard set, I've finished Christensen's book and found it enlightening, but Arnold's are two 600 page books each filled with rules, so it's kind of daunting. I'm preparing to write a baroque suite for my uni next year😁
Excellent video. I always wanted to be able to improvise on classical musicians as I do in Jazz. I would never have thought that you can just learn licks in a few cadences and already get a lot like that.
Can you do a video on the French Augmented sixth chord? Im currently obsessed with it so im curious how you will use it:)
oh really? dunno if this really lends itself for a whole video…check Prokofiev 1st Sonata, final cadence 😂 if you wanna see a boss example
@@en-blanc-et-noir Oh really hahah will check it out!:)
Why do the Haendel examples make me think of Bach pieces? They bear a lot of similarities. It is known that Bach adored Haendel, while Haendel knew barely anything about Bach.
Content King!
Prelude 4 sounds like something that deserves to be on the well tempered clavier. At 15:57 I see a chord of D F A C Eb, some people say it's very important to Bach's style! Maybe it's wrong to think like that, that it should just be seen as voices not as chords but still
let him koch ...
It’s amazing how you bring together the partimento and the romantic aesthetic! Well done! I absolutely loved it!
Good idea using a Baroque practice and upgrading it into a more modern, Romantic setting.
I have. play the guitar for many years, but I am a complete beginner on the keyboard. I am interested in learning improvisation in Baroque and classical style. Do you have a list of your lessons arranged in order of difficulty from beginner to advanced?
What fantastic lessoe !!!!!!! Tank you !!!
If I wanted to find a textbook on all of this, what topic area would I search for?
The only one that I can sincerely recommend is unfortunately in German: "Compendium Improvisation" by Schwenkreis et al.

It's wonderful that in the 21st century there's someone who has taken up the work of the great Romantic composers by creating new works, I've been hoping for this for a long time, and classical music hadn't died with its original composers. Thanks for this wonderful work, Michael!
