    Hi Gary, are you able to provide battery repair to the public. I have a Peugeot Ion for which the range has suddenly deteriorated by half, and even when fully charged goes into turtle mode within a couple of miles driving (and the battery SoC meter is showing nearly full). I suspect (but currently cant prove as i havent yet got the canion app) some cells have either failed or dramatically gone out of balance. The car only has 11k but has only covered a few hundred miles over the last few years, so i suspect sitting unused and not cycling the battery has done some damage. Do you have a website so i could communicate with you directly. Ive also spoken to the service desk at cleevely ev and beyond the diagnostic they indicated it wasnt something theyd be able to repair (if it was due to bad cells etc).Cheers Chris.

    The importance of balancing can't be stress enough. I have a 2014 Leaf with 240.000km and 70% SOH. Always charged, 99% of times with the EVSE so very low power. In the first years I always charged it to 100% once a week. Nowadays I charged it almost every day to 100%.

      @@decimal1815 I prefer to charge it to 100%, as anyway it only sits at that level for a couple of hours. So that in the end of the day it still keeps more than 20% of SOC. I'm confident, it will be better for the battery in the long run.

    Each end of a 'normal' cable has a resistor to tell both the car and the charger the maximum charge rate (220 ohm for 32A, 680 ohm for 16A), so if it were possible to extend two differently rated 'normal' cables, the car would charge at the lowest rate. Unlike a 'normal' cable, this extension connects PP down the cable, so it reports whatever is plugged into it. I have modified the plug on my tethered cable with a switch to provide 3 different resistances to allow the car to charge at 13A, 20A or 32A, which is very useful for maximising solar power to the car. The car tells the charger (via CP) the maximum rate it can handle.

    • @garyc4450
      @garyc4450 4 дня назад

      Hi as the resistor is between pp and earth if you were able to daisy chain cables successfully wouldn’t those resistors end up in parallel resulting in a lower overall resistance?

    • @andyfraser5876
      @andyfraser5876 4 дня назад

      @@garyc4450 No, because on a 'normal' cable, the resistor is only in the plug, and does not connect to the other end.

    • @garyc4450
      @garyc4450 4 дня назад

      Yes the resistor is in the plug, but it’s connected between pp and earth so whether it’s in one end or the other doesn’t matter, there is 220ohm let’s say between pp and earth, that’s detectable at each end of the cable. If you could daisy chain another cable which has 220ohm between pp and earth you’d then have 110ohm between pp and earth surely?

    • @andyfraser5876
      @andyfraser5876 4 дня назад

      @@garyc4450 PP does NOT connect down the cable. so the resistor is the only connection to PP on the plug at one end and there's another resistor to PP at the other end.

    • @andyfraser5876
      @andyfraser5876 4 дня назад

      You can prove this by connecting a multimeter to measure resistance between PP at each end of the cable; there is no connection. Actually you'll measure both resistors in series, via PE, so expect to see 440 ohm on a 32A cable and 1360 ohm on a 16A cable.

  • @MarkIrving
    @MarkIrving 4 дня назад

    You tested slowly pulling apart the cable-to-cable connection under load. Another test for quickly pulling the plug and socket apart, as if someone tripped over a cable or caught it in some sort of machinery, perhaps? That would give the car's on-board charger much less time to shut down before the current-carrying pins disconnect.

  • @litteulfaith
    @litteulfaith 4 дня назад

    HI Gary. Yeah that's definitely my noise. I'm wondering what are the risks of ignoring this problem? I mean, considering that the only solution seems to replace the motor. Will something break eventually?

    • @garyc4450
      @garyc4450 4 дня назад

      Hi, it’s not best to ignore it. While it’s noisy the bearings can be replaced in the motor, once it breaks down that means it’s very unlikely you can replace the bearings, only option is to replace the motor. When the bearings get hot they eventually lock up and the outer race rotates and grinds the hole out so the new bearing doesn’t sit properly or it can overheat and damage the motor windings. Cheers.

    • @litteulfaith
      @litteulfaith 4 дня назад

      @garyc4450 4 дня назад

      Hi I don’t do “how to” info as tbh I’m not insured for that and I don’t know the skills/capabilities of the people involved. It’s not diy it’s high voltage and there aren’t any breakers to keep you safe like at home, just a massive fuse so if you aren’t trained to make sure the vehicle is safe it might end badly. Thanks.

    Hi Gary sir! I’m having that exact same noise as in this video ruclips.net/video/mGQ3EagPQao/видео.html on a 2017 R90 41kwh Zoe. I believe this has to do with failing bearings. • @garyc4450
      @garyc4450 5 дней назад

    It's a Renault...the only car brand with a jack as their logo....😅 Had also a Zoe and sold it because of charging issues and a dealership that refused to investigate the issue (that might have been caused by them)...

    Just used it, brilliant! I used the super charger en-route to Devon. The 7kw would be great when visiting an event, leave the car whilst you are in the NEC. Coffee while you wait but the Starbucks staff were all a bit bored :)

  • @BF1GUN
    @BF1GUN 11 дней назад

    7kWh is fine if you are staying overnight, but why didn't they make them all fast charger? Thousands of people visit the NEC on event days, and that is not going to be sufficient to charge a car in a few hours.

    • @garyc4450
      @garyc4450 11 дней назад

      On the flip side if you plug into a rapid you’d need to move aside in 30-60 minutes so someone else could charge. If you’re there all day then 7kw is sufficient, 5 hours is 35kwh which is over 100 miles gained. Cheers

      @Rhodgie 11 дней назад

      🤦‍♂️ because it's so you can get some charge for the 4, 6 or maybe even 8 hours you're at an event... not to fully charge everyone to 100%, it is the same as the 7kW chargers at a supermarket or a P&R

      @@garyc4450 It was a bit tongue in cheek 😀 I took my EV on a long trip a couple of weeks back, and I stopped at Gridserve on the M5 J30. Luckily I got a charger, but many others had to wait. There needs to a queuing system put in place as it seems to be a bit of a free for all.

    I've done 2 of these repairs, now, but used the £0.06 2 x 1MR resistor method instead. Both cars still running fine. It'll be interesting to see how long they continue to. I also read recently that someone has done this repair without removing the inverter from the car (I assume they had to disconnect the cooling pipes at least) just undoing the main 4 (?) bolts to release the box from the sub frame, flip it over, remove the bottom (now top) cover and solder in-situ... Sounds doable but a bit awkward for such a fiddly job whilst leaning into the boot...

    • @garyc4450
      @garyc4450 12 дней назад

      It is really not recommended to use the resistor bodge. That method skews the reading upwards and usually too high, this may mean the car has an insulation fault where hv is connected to the car’s body and the precharge fails due to the hv drain but the car thinks precharge is successful and as well as arcing the contactors could cause a dangerous situation. I’m not sure if you’re a diyer or EV mechanic but my liability insurance (and conscience) certainly wouldn’t be happy with that method. Cheers

      59p/kWh which I thought was quite reasonable. There’s no evening events at the nec at the moment just smaller daytime events so it’s empty overnight. My event was in a hotel nearby. Cheers.

    • @michaelgoode9555
      @michaelgoode9555 13 дней назад

      59p on 7kw isn't reasonable imo. I understand why people who travel to the NEC would plug in and top up if their journey requires them to for the return but I would feel fleeced at that rate. They should call themselves DT, not BP. Dick Turpin!

    • @decimal1815
      @decimal1815 12 дней назад

      Govt needs to regulate charging costs. 25p/kWh is more reasonable for 7kW on this scale.. unless you roll the parking fees into the charging costs

    Its not that we wanted AC charging to win, we just at the time literally did not know what the infrastructure would look like. We were allowed to get such rapid AC charging because we used the actual motor windors as the induction for the circuit! Amazing weight saving. Downaides wa this required a full earth loop impedance test when you okugged in, this presumably cause alot of charger rcd trips and also very noticible whine as the widings arw deisgned for traction not as a charge inductor!

      I think it's sad that the way it is implemented is incompatible with a significant fraction of the Norwegian grid, and the dealers offered option for either portable adapter, or home adapter. The Zoe seems like a fantastic option at that size, but driving one in Norway, you have to be aware of the potential incompatibility at random stations. If a public charger is 11-22-43 kW, you know it's 400 V TN-grid 3-phase, and no problem. If it's a single phase station, it might be 230 V IT/TT-grid, or 400 V TN-grid, there's no way to tell without trying if it works or not. Signta fraction of older grid is 230 V IT-grid, and some is TT-grid, while new grid in general is 400 V TN-grid.

    As I've always said, like anything it's no doubt theoretically possible but even on the ZE50 by the time you've paid out for the parts and labour it's probably cheaper to just trade it in for one that already has it :). Definitely for the 22 and 40. I insisted on it this time. To be fair at the moment I've still not needed to rapid charge. 200 miles covers a lot of weekend eventualities. Winter might be another story.
